  • Customer's 1972 D-28. I talk a lot about the order things have to be done and what happens when one of the steps goes wrong and it throws all the other steps off.
Waverly tuners, respaced nut, new frets, bridge scoot, bridge with 2 1/4" spacing and long vintage saddle, scalloped, K&K pickup, Antique Acoustics pins.

Great to hear a really relaxed, honest discussion of things that might go wrong and how to fix them in a professional way.

I worked my whole life as a machinist, welder and fabricator, I had an old boss that use to always tell me he knew who were the good fabricators because they could repair their mistakes and knew how to overcome their mistakes and still make the finished piece look very good. You sir are the man, you are a true artist! I have a D28 and love it, I have a D41 which sounds good but my D28 rings and sustains very nicely!

Clean and organized shop is a good indication of the workmanship before the breakdown started. Great video!

I'm really tight on space so I HAVE to keep it organized, best as I can. :) My hair... not so much.

Excellent, honest, knowledgeable, informative video. Perfect for us acoustic guitar addicts. I have a Martin HD28 which I purchased new 23 years ago and which has developed wonderfully over the years and has to be heard to be believed.

Thanks, Bryan - another great video. Love your honesty about the screw up and taking the time to make it right! (That's why I still want to send you my guitar - maybe a few of my guitars - some day!)

72 is my favorite year for the 70's Martins. They always seem to have a little something extra to offer in sound & character for some reason. 71 is also a really good year for stock 28s. I usually prefer them scalloped or trimmed, but there are always exceptions.

Bryan: Big respect for talking about this guitar: triumphs AND mistakes. (We all make them ;-) what are you using for a mic when you are doing your videos? Thanks: Karl from Cape Cod.

What would you say, in general, about 1972 D-28s? Pros and cons? And how much would you pay for one in ok condition? thanks?

Well, in general, I like 70's a lot because they have such potential. I don't really care about condition...I prefer one that's NOT in great condition so that a) I can get it for less money, b) I won't feel bad about modifying it. I'd pay $1800 or so for one, knowing it's gonna need $500-1000 worth of work.

Is there a sound peculiar to the early 70's D28? Like a solid punchy warm bold bass. Or is it my imagination.

Well, I'm scalloping for a certain unique sound that you can't get in a new Martin. Otherwise you could just go buy that guitar ya know?

I'm not longer working on guitars on a reliable and steady basis. Sorry. See my latest videos "Bryan Answers Questions" for why.
