I had the same problem for a long while. What helped most was learning the position and behaviour of both the external abdominal oblique and the inguinal ligament, and then I could abstract them both below the ribcage and going into the groin.
Yeah, I physically cringed at that for a moment. But at the same time, what if the character had another set of arms for whatever reason? Wouldn't the torso _have_ to be longer to accomodate that so it's not squished?
I think that, the amount of people commenting on how bad the first drawing looks AFTER the video loops, is a good testament to how more artists *should* tweak their proportions little by little and compare with what they had beforehand. Perspective is quite a neat thing, and we can get caught up in our own perceptions of what something looks like that we think it *initially* looks fine, until we actually test how it would look in another way.
@@bocahdongo7769 Bro....make the ribcage 1 & 1/2 head tall and the length of upperbody from opening of ribcage to pubic bone is 2 & 1/2 heads tall or 3 heads( if your character is tall ). Also the greater trocanther lines up with the pubic bone. So from ASIS to the line of greater trocanther the gesture of glutes medius will come inward then curve outward once it crosses it depending on how thicc u want your female character to be.
Hm, I think the reason this one doesn’t look that bad (at least at first) is that you could realistically be drawing a character that tall? It’s just that proportions would mean the ribcage should be taking on some of that height as well?
I was wondering when this mistake would've joined the common mistake series. This is a mistake I have been doing often since I started drawing full bodies just recently I am figuring out how to avoid it. This trick will help me solve the problem without overthinking, thanks!
You know what, I'll say it, I'm glad I got to see this. I spite my inability to regulate my torso size so much, I can't help, but notice that I stretch up a character like taffy when drawing them. It frustrates me so much, thank you for elaborating on this difficulty, I've been looking for a proper fix to practice and I'll be trying this out. I look forward to more tips.
Watching your videos since years and every video i ask my self what another wrong thing he will talk about, you always have a new advice.keep going so much love❤
I've been waiting so long for this one. I didn't think to divide it in halves, I always thought in thirds but with the middle third being much shorter.
The length of the clavicle to the tenth rib cage bone being about the size of the bottom half of the torso is also a guideline of how tall the clavicle to the top of the head should be, too. This creates thirds, which also very conveniently tend to make up roughly half the body, meaning you can use that same length measurements to space out the legs, too. Legs can still be varied lengths if you know how, but it's still a good standardization of the rules.
I think this problem occurs also when people don't tilt the simplified form of pelvis properly wrt to ribcage. That leads to placing the forms of external obliques, erectus abs, serratus & gluteus medius all wrong. Also this proportion issue in perspective gets solved practicing/observing numerous poses daily that builds up that intuitive guess & decision making ability.
This doesn't account for stylization, but the most important thing to remember when drawing no matter the style is the ratio of each part to each other. As long as it's believable and can make sense, "I like the way this looks" is a good enough reason for making a stylistic design choice.
Thank you! I've been needing help with this for so long! 🙏 My only question now is where should we place the tip of the sternum? Like would it go 2/3 or 3/4 of the ribcage?
actually you have really good content about many common mistakes artists make but this is also a problem for some people who try or start drawing, sometimes people can be perfectionist when viewing your video content because of correction of common mistakes in artists, this perfectionism is very dangerous. Perfectionism can trigger deep frustration so that the person no longer wants to try this drawing. is the main and common enemy that beginners get when drawing I tried to start drawing by drawing random objects that I found on Pinterest to improve my observation skills. At first I was happy because I didn't think about the final result and didn't act as a perfectionista nd that's what made me a little addicted to drawing and that's good. When I saw your video I just asked myself "can I do it like this? in this video?"
Can you talk about purposeful distortion of this stuff? I have a character who’s disproportionate in the legs, they’re super long, but there’s an actual reason- he’s meant to be a little off if you look closely. Like, his eyes look ever so slightly too large, his arms are a bit too thin and long, and his legs are longer than they should be.
I HAVE A QUESTION You always say that the horizon line, and vanishing points are on the height of the viewer's eyes Soooo how do I know where the third vanishing point is? How far should it be from the viewer?
Ngl usually I’m like “oh this isn’t bad” then he’s just like “nah this is done completely wrong, let me explain why” then I look at the before and after and I’m either like “eh, makes sense.” Or “hmmm, they both look kinda good.”
The difficult part is mostly everything soft between the ribcage and hips, determining that and how it behaves is difficult for me.
Same for me too, somtimes It's too rigid, sometimes its too soft

Only problem with that is if you don’t have a tablet and have to work with pen and paper
Could you do one on the general size of the ribcage ? I always make it too big and don't understand how it attaches to the soft part of the torso
I'll keep it in mind

I've been waiting so long for this one. I didn't think to divide it in halves, I always thought in thirds but with the middle third being much shorter.
These videos are helping me out a lot
bro shattered my entire world perception with that loop

The crazy part about this video is I’m literally learning how to draw the torso rn and the timing couldn’t be any better 😭
Something i tend to do is making the torso short instead of long.
I felt my spine shatter watching that loop
Thank you excal finally a tip I feel is going to help me. Have been making long torsos. Long bois
Yeah, I tend to have that problem as well as making the head too big sometimes lol

I used to make this mistake. If you made this video back in late 2023/Early 2024, I would've gladly watched it ciuntless times until i fixed it
i knew what i was doing was correct! I hate how i was fighting myself of if i was getting better or worse the whole of last week
Its probably a good thing that the first image didn't look right to me.
The way I fix this mistake is push up the bottom half and look at whether it looks good or not. Repeat until done.
i usually see the torso subdivided into 3 sections and that's been confusing me on the total length
I have a bad Habit of doing the opposite where the torso is far too short
Thank you! I've been needing help with this for so long! 🙏
My only question now is where should we place the tip of the sternum? Like would it go 2/3 or 3/4 of the ribcage?
I was guilty of this my entire first year of drawing 😭
Also, your perspective plays an important role in determining the size of each proportion...
I'm not torso shaming her. She was born this way.

Do you have a short on how to draw tentacles/appendages so that they have depth and don't feel flat or disproportionate?

I couldn't wait for you to come and clear the cupboard...
can you make a tips about drawing head, sometimes when i draw the head too big than the body
It didn't look wrong at first, but after a second look, it does look a little too long.
I’m struggling with just the outline of the pose cause sometimes I make them to small and sometimes to long i can’t find a good measurement
I always draw it too short on accident, then I don't realise until I've drawn the legs 😭😭
Unlike some people, i saw the weirdly long torso instantly and saw it doesnt look good.
The hard part is the inbetween. I’d like to know what the max and min height that the thinnest part of the waist can occur at.
Proportions go out the window when you include outliers like Manute Bol.
I am definitely very guilty of this particular one.
My problem is that I tend to make it too short
Then there are people who draw the torso too short 😶
