A contemporary review stated that Talvela "sings like the ocean roars." Indeed.
Talvela is incomparable in this recording. The flatness at the start of his low F only adds to the atmospheric color of his brilliant performance of this scene. His voice was probably the richest bass voice ever recorded!
Love the nasty contrabassoon lines at the close of this duet!
Sounds grand. I play this Rigoletto often. But I do like trying to picture a man of Talvela's stature skulking in an alley.

Actually the low F isn't the tough note. You simply don't get cast if you can't manage the F. The soft top E is harder. Talvela and Milnes sing the whole thing softly and mysteriously. Very well done indeed.

Il massimo punto lirico di riferimento. Qui c'è tutto, in perfezione: dall'orchestra agli interpreti. Quanto all'edizione, la migliore per me in assoluto. Tuttavia confesso che il mio Duca di elezione è Alfredo Kraus...mi perdoni il grandissimo Pavarotti.
Talvela began his professional career in Vienna as a 1st bass in the choir. It gave him the routine of producing softer tones in the high range. The problem with this low F is the one octave fall and the mental preparation needed to relax the vocal chords from middle to low range, especially after having sung the high e. Sparafucile´s part is as cruel as the character; one needs a high f# in the finale.
Talvela was first class i his fach.
I thought he was just keep oscillating between the E and the F like the background instrument.
