  • Welcome back to the channel!
Today were back in the shed for a quick lesson on how to rust proof your bolts, washers and indeed most outdoor fixings.
The bolts shown in todays video are from the gsx600f as they are exposed to the elements all the time are susceptible to rusting this will be a good test of the process and long term weather proofing effects.

I’d like to warn everyone that many bolts are heat treated and this will affect its physical properties and strength profile. Great content though

Thanks for your comment and I'm glad you liked the video. I've seen various ways of heating bolts. Some use ovens others use a torch. The basic principle is the same. The bolts must be heated so they change colour. Steel to blue then back to steel at this point you dunk the bolt head into your oil.
This process does not change the physical properties of the bolt if done correctly.
These bolts were not used structurally.
I hope this clears up any confusion 👍

@@SurreyRider right! My one concern is that being in the metal industry, we are aware that as soon as a steel exceeds temperatures of as little as a couples hundred degrees, it will change the temperament. As soon as metal changes color (just under 400 degrees), you can be certain that you have changed its physical properties which could be a major issue if the specific qualities of the bolt are required, for example in the case of an automotive bolt

@@kaisunra9676 I agree these bolts perhaps should not be used for things such as engine mounts and frames. In most cases I use bolts treated in this manner to mount fairing panels, battery terminals and similar. These are bolts ive treated to mount in this case a custom made speedo mount. Ive used this method many times and have not had any issues.

That is exactly what I suggest in the video, clean off the rust as I have shown or with a mild acid (vinegar) its better to watch the whole video than skip bits or you can sometimes miss valuable information.

have you gotten beat up in the comments about altering the metal properties yet and making these bolts brittle and reducing their tensile strength, I'm not trying to be a jerk, I just seen that always being the case, so I use this process only for ornamental hardware and not for anything structural, maybe a metallurgist can comment on this for us
please watch this clip at this part ruclips.net/video/CTMUEmQbniM/видео.html

Hi Good enough garage, thanks for the extra reading. As a rule I tend not to use treated bolts structurally. Instead I as in this case these held on the headlight and seat. I used them like this with no issues. Thanks for your comment.

Will this work on screws as well...

Hi, first I'd suggest checking to see if they are steel, this process only work on steel.

Is it dangerous to breathe in the smoke? Should you wear a paint fume mask? Should this be done outside?

Hi there Meserbee I have seen this done with and without masks. Personally if its done with plenty of ventilation I can see no reason why it can't be done outside in a shed or similar.

Only dip the bolt enough to submerge it enough.. push to far down and you'll melt the bottom of the plastic container and oil will spill all over your worktop.

That was not the correct way of bluing steel. Your screws became too brittle. Red hot steel (over 800 deg.Celsius) is used during hardening steel. Bluing temperature is max 300 deg.Celsius. A blue oxidation appears on a steel. That's why it's called bluing.
