- Today's video is about trying something new! I've been wondering lately whether Clairefontaine Pastelmat would be a suitable surface for my Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolor pencils, so what better way to find out than to experiment and do a test piece of this Elegant Parrot.

love this! I was wondering about using pastelmat for awhile. I never see many videos on watercolor pencils this was beautiful. I use watercolor pencils to do animal portraits as I love the type of blending and fur-like strokes I get with them as opposed to regular watercolor. I usually put pastel pencils on top too so I was having a hard time finding proper paper for my mixed techniques. I have had good results using strathmore mixed media heavyweight paper since it holds water well but I still get that vellum-tooth instead of watercolor paper tooth that I find makes some pencils look grainy. Might have to try pastelmat next!

I think these for the base layers, and Polychromos for details would be a lovely combo. I had no idea the watercolour pencils would work on Pastelmat, though, so that's good to know. Thanks for sharing the experiment!

It’s so hard to find videos on watercolor pencils! This video is fantastic! It is even better than you demo on pastel mat. I’ll have to try this! I’ve already watched several of your videos and subscribed! Consider doing some real time with comments that include why you choose certain colors. You have a nice teaching style!

I think I'll have to try this; the pastel mat looks to be a great surface for watercolour pencils. Gorgeous bird, I love drawing and painting them too. ❤️

I’m going to try this. It looks like fun. Can I use a hairdryer to speed up drying time?.
I'm sure you probably could, it wouldn't make it run since it speaks in well, just don't have the heat too high.
