The dub of satako does a really good and odd job of sounding like the sub voice on her inflection and especially laugh. Dubs are all around serviceable Mx don’t get the hate
I never really get tired of each side, I feel the VA teams for both 2006 and 2020 did great. While I feel like the 2006 edition was way more goofy and silly with animation, which just boosted the enjoyment of listening to the voice actors do their magic, I do enjoy Gou's attempt with it as well. While it's not nearly as silly and over the top with it's VAs like 2006, I feel they made a great attempt to capture the characters. But I'll be honest, Keiichi in the beginning for the 2020 version just sounded like he didn't care about anything most of the time lol.
I don't know why, but 2020's keiichi bothers me so much. he doesn't sound like he has any soul lol at least 2006 had spunk that matched the rest of the cast, and accented stuff like a normal person would. I guess it's just the nasal sound that everyone dislikes about 2006 him. Idk, everyone but satako sounds natural to me in 2006, while 2020 sounds like they're mimicking the original dub, but with less cheerfulness overall. I guess I don't mind 2020 rena, they got the cheery part right but the rest feels weird or off. the only part I liked about this whole showcase for 2020 was the conflict at the end, that sounded better than a grand majority of it. maybe they're more used to dubbing over action rather than slice of life?
2006: Keichi: his voice is really good and definitely sounds like a goofy teenager and it’s so cringe it makes me giggle but that’s what makes me like his voice even better and yea he do be sounding like sonic the hedgehog😂😂 Mion/shion: there voices are fucking perfect, sound like true beautiful teenagers😍😍 Rena: her old voice really sounds adorable and cheerful and I like the way she sounds badass when she talks like oyashiro😍😎 Satoko: I mean it was alright but the only thing that threw me off was the laugh like everytime she laugh she reminds of Nelson from the simpsons it’s so bad and yea her voice can sometimes be annoying but I got use to it tho👍👍 Rika: Well idk like everytime she talks all I hear is lelouch sister and it just really bugs me so sorry but her voice isn’t it for me👎👎 2020 Keichi: idk but he always sounds tired all the time and he really hasn’t been funny to me like the old version like he do sound older and not teenager type so that’s a no for me🥱🥱 Mion/shion: her voice doesn’t sound all teenager like the old version she sounds like a mother so I really haven’t been getting any enjoyment from her voice😭😭😭😭 Rena:tbh she actually was able to sound perfect to the Japanese version so I’ll give her that😍🥰 Satoko:well its not really bad and her laugh actually sounds perfect so she ok to me🤝🤝 Rika:mhm well her voice kinda isn’t high pitched enough but it’s alright but but the way she says mi and nippha are perfect😇😇 ONE MORE THING, why do they say Rena and Rika name so weird I never understood that it’s not that hard to say it????
Keiichi: 2006 is... cringey, to say the least. He sounds like Sonic 2006. I actually like his new voice actor a lot. He sounds like a 14 y/o trying to sound cool and kinda failing, which is exactly Keiichi’s vibe. Rena: I love Mela Lee, but her Rena is really not some of her better work. Though I love when her Rena gets crazy, but that’s not really featured in this particular video. I like how they interpreted her vocal tics in the 2020 version more than the 2006 version, which took it way too literally and made it awkward to hear in English. Mion: Megan Hollingshead is the only Mion/Shion for me. Her range from the confidence of Mion to the maniacal shrieks of Shion is amazing. 2020 Mion sounds way too old, kinda like a soccer mom. Satoko: 2006 Satoko is... not good. So when I found out her voice actress was Suki from ATLA, I was gagged to say the least. A good way to describe the 2006 dub in general is “cringe”. Her voice in 2020 is annoying in the best way possible. She sounds like such a brat, and has a lot of the same intonations that her Japanese seiyuu does, which is impressive. Rika: She’s a tough character to translate into English, considering her Japanese seiyuu has so much range for a woman in her 40s who’s known for her cutesy persona. For me, neither the 2006 or the 2020 versions of Rika in English are much good at all, but there’s very few English voice actresses I could imagine possibly doing a character like Rika justice anyway.
I think I agree with you almost completely. Rika especially is hard, because she's cute but has her moments when she _needs_ to sound like a dead-inside 40 y/o. Also that nipah is difficult to handle in dubs, it's a weird thing for English speakers to grasp. Gou handled it better I think, the 06 one sounded cringey...
I don’t get it, what stopped them from bringing back the original voices from the 2006 Dub? Hell, the 2006 Keiichi was played by Grant George (the voice of Yamcha from DBZ) and he’s a part of Funimation’s team, so it’s not like they have to go out of their way to find him!!
How you mention it if you take away the surfer voice I can hear the hint of it that actor's voice I also agreed that old dub was better in fact I think that they should make a last-ditch change in the next season and have the original actors voices back then if you do as far as when they make a DVD to the new one just have them read up your voices because it was bad
@@twinswords79dualblade84 That makes more sense. In fact, the Bang Zoom dub was the only thing that I could think of about Grant George voicing Yamcha.
Some time around 2011 or so Grant George just suddenly got way better as a VA than he was in the 00's. Khoi Dao's 2020 Keiichi is better than Grant George's 2006 but I'm really curious how good Grant George would be as Keiichi today.
For Keiichi, I prefer Grant George, but I'll admit that Khoi Dao got better after this first episode. For both Rena and Rika, it's a tie. Emi Lo and Apphia Yu are eerily good at channeling what Mela Lee and Rebecca Forstadt did with those characters in the 2006 dub. For Satoko, Brittany Lauda is hands down more fitting than Jennie Kwan was. With Kwan's Satoko, I could always tell it was an older girl trying to force a child voice, whereas Lauda delivers a more appropriate sounding voice and a stronger performance overall. For Mion, and Shion by extension, it's like the reverse of Satoko - Megan Hollingshead was hands down better than Michelle Rojas because I'm sorry, I do not buy Rojas as a girl Mion or Shion's age - her voice is naturally too deep and mature sounding. She doesn't do a bad performance and she's done these kinds of roles better elsewhere, but here she just doesn't live up to Hollingshead's take. I think the rest of the cast in the new dub - the VAs for Ooishi, Tomitake, Takano, Dr. Irie, Kimiyoshi, Okonogi, Rina, Teppei, etc. - are all improvements over the old dub (except no Barbara Goodson as Grandma Sonozaki anymore, booooo!), but only by a little bit, and that certainly doesn't make the old dub weaker. ruclips.net/video/akgzzlTP5-Y/видео.html This right here (specifically the 2:47 point onward) is what seals my preference for Grant George btw. Moves me to tears every. single. time.
I see maybe a small improvement for 2020. Satoko sounds like a chipmunk but some kids do sound a bit chipmunkish. Rena's is fine. I like the switch between cuteness and 'serious.' Keiichi sounds familiar to another anime protagonist but he's cool. Mion sounds a little too much older considering she's around 14 but it's not bothersome.
im so biased to the sub and VN performances but I think overall both dubs are a mixed bag. I think with a better direction and closer inflections toward the sub the 2020 dub would be very good! the voices themselves aren't too terrible. my only gripe with 2020 Mion, Keiichi and Rika. Mion sounds way too old, Keiichi is too deep and doesn't sound like a teen at all ( not as old as Mion sounds tho ) annnnnd Rika doesn't really seem to suit her. She sounds perfectly like a little girl, but I feel like if she had a higher voice ( maybe like Monica Rial? ) it would have sounded much more natural. Rena sounds so perfect in 2020 and I tbh enjoyed 2006's Keiichi's /acting/ a little more than 2020's. At first, I thought Keiichi was being voiced by Todd Haberkorn, and even tho it's not him doing that voice I can't help but wonder what a performance he'd do under Keiichi's character. *shrug*
I prefer the old dub mostly due to nostalgia but it varies with characters. My opinion of the 2020 dub is from the moment of hearing them now since I watched the sub. I like Mion's voice in the original, especially her laugh. She's my second favorite out of the cast and her Shion portrayal is cute. Rika's original voice is my favorite out of the whole cast. It felt off because she's a young kid with an older sounding voice, but it made sense for her character. Satoko is... the new one is cuter? I like that the laugh is close to the sub. Rena's feels too high either way but I like the 2020 one better. And Keiichi... ehh I could go either way. I totally forgot what he sounded like so I don't have a preference.
Just in case anyone doesn't know who the old and new voice actors are: 2006: •Keiichi - Grant George •Rika - Rebecca Forstadt •Rena - Mela Lee •Mion/Shion - Megan Hollingshead •Satoko - Jennie Kwan 2020: •Keiichi - Khoi Dao •Rika - Apphia Yu •Rena - Emi Lo •Mion/Shion - Michelle Rojas •Satoko - Brittany Lauda
Satoko's 2006 voice at 4:28 It wasn't so lousy but it didn't exactly sound like her original Japanese voice. Satoko's 2020 voice at 5:01 It sounds a lot cuter and accurate to her Japanese voice.
As a sub guy who watched this in dub in 2014 and today, the old dub is nostalgic, fun to listen to and look back on, but is it good? No. The new one isn't perfect by any means, but I think it is better than the old.
There's clearly a lot of nostalgia bias for the 2006 show in the community. Let's face it, that dub was awful. 2020 is better but only by a little bit. Keiichi's voice is significantly better and more fitting and so is Satoko's. The rest are... eh. Rika sucks in both. Rena is better in 2006. I kinda like Mion's voice in Gou but I can see it going either way.
Both have their ups and both have their downs. I like some of the older voices better, like Rena's, Mion's (I do like her 2020 voice, I just think the 2006 one suited her more), and a few instances of Keiichi's, but overall I think the new dub does a better job with Satoko, Rika, and Keiichi. I think it does some moments better than the original dub, like Satoko's trauma breakdown at lunch time. I would say that they're both a solid 6 or 7 out of 10. Not the greatest anime dubs in the world, but certainly not the worst either!
It may because I love the old dub because of nostalgia but I love the old dub better and not just the old dub but the old anime too. It just the new one looks too clean and I love how the old one could be passed on as a slice of life anime and then can get very traumatic and creepy, the new one doesn't really bring that honestly but that my opinion and if anybody want to object it please be nice. But I love the old dub honestly the voice for them very much fits them quite well.
I understand why people don't like how Khoi Dao's initial portrayal of Keiichi, I personally like it because his deadpan delivery of some lines are giving Shikamaru vibes.
I like New Rika VA as Rika but Apphia Yu can't pull off a 'Bernkastel', so she might not cut to be Bernkastel if Umineko having a adaptation. I'm quite a Biased here because Yu can pull off a great performance to other series like the Toaru Series
I found the 2020 version easier to listen to. The 2006 dub has a more a more campy cartoony feel that has a charm of its own though and reminds of how dubbing was back then.
No hate but I prefer the 2006 one better nostalgia reasons from my childhood. As for the dub in 2020-2021 can't say it's good I prefer sub the only voices that seem bareable to me is mion, shion and Sotakos voice only when she turns into a teenager though I don't find her voice very nice when she's a kid in the village sounds annoying af. Overall prefer sub.
I grew up on the og dub, but even I thought the Sub was better as a 10 year old who hated reading so many subtitles. Both dubs are awful but great in their own way's. Here's my opinion ig, lol. Og Dub: I love Keichi and Satakos voices in the original 2006 dub. They were done very very well. Mion and Shion were done exceptionally well, and even Rena sounded decent in some scene's. Rika was the only one who sounded awful in the og dub. It's like she had a frog stuck in her throat. 2020 Dub: Keichi sounds like a 20 year old man. Satakos voice is way too squeaky and it hurts my ears. Rikas voice is just personaly off too me. Mion sounds absolutely awful, I'm sorry. It's so deep and for what? I know women can have deep voices but she sounds like an adult not a teenager. And Rena sounds like a broken and croaky pinky pie. She's my favourite character and I absolutely despise her new dub voice. It's a shame they couldn't take the same care with the english dub voices as they do with the og Japanese dubs.
both aren't awful...I liked the og one so much, never watch any of when they cry subbed until I was forced too in the later seasons because there was no dub for those. This dub for the new one just sounds off, can't put my finger on it. Wish the would get the OG cast back.
im so sad bc idve loved to try to do rena's voice for an official dub. my biggest gripe is when you can tell the VA is trying way too hard to sound cutesy. english is naturally spoken in a deeper register / part of the voice. so trying hard to sound high pitched for english dubs is rly rly cringy. lean into the fact that english is normally spoken lower. the energy should go to the performance- not towards trying to sound cute / younger. easy fix: cast younger actors. or cast actors with a natural voice thats already higher pitched. the reason that dubs tend to suck is bc they only cast from a small pool of actors. unfortunately this dub was recorded remotely and had a newer director who also cast herself in two roles -- if you are newer to directing its best to put your energy into directing. esp. when everything is set up to make you fail (mic quality, lack of in person stuff, lack of a wide pool of actors to cast from.)
New dub gets a 0/10. There was no "Come to daddy beef patty" smh

Rena's feels too high either way but I like the 2020 one better.
And Keiichi... ehh I could go either way. I totally forgot what he sounded like so I don't have a preference.
keichi is kind of a giga chad with his own harem, the og voice was more fitting
Apphia Yu as Rika in the 2020 dub shines when Rika drops the cutesy little girl act. Unfortunately, moments like that are few and far in between.
3:40 - 3:41
IS THAT FUCKING SONIC?!
You're wrong keiichi is voiced by Grant George who also voice Gilgamesh from Fate Stay Night.
Anyone can have a picnic. Nipah!
Just in case anyone doesn't know who the old and new voice actors are:
2006:
•Keiichi - Grant George
•Rika - Rebecca Forstadt
•Rena - Mela Lee
•Mion/Shion - Megan Hollingshead
•Satoko - Jennie Kwan
2020:
•Keiichi - Khoi Dao
•Rika - Apphia Yu
•Rena - Emi Lo
•Mion/Shion - Michelle Rojas
•Satoko - Brittany Lauda
English dub 2020 Keiichi is Khoi Dao, All I hear is Albedo from Genshin Impact.
Keiichi and Rena in the 2020 dub almost sound like Natsu and Wendy. Or am I wrong?
While I don’t dislike the the 2020 dub, I definitely prefer 2006 (except for Rika; Rika’s 2020 VA is better imo)
4:01
Honestly.. Isn't リカ the sweetest?
(I did that meme cuz apparently Rika and Rena's names are pronounced with Japanese R's.)
I'm so glad Apphia Yu as Rikka.
Keichii's voice sounds really weird in the new version actually scrap that all of the cast in 2020 sounds weird no offense

Rena: Good morning, Keiichi
Subtitles: Good morning, Katie
Satoko's 2006 voice at 4:28
It wasn't so lousy but it didn't exactly sound like her original Japanese voice.
Satoko's 2020 voice at 5:01
It sounds a lot cuter and accurate to her Japanese voice.
5:24 - Satoko's VIBEZ Filter🌸💖🎀🌺😊
The old dub may not be the best dub by far but i still love it, the new dub just doesnt feel right
Dunno, for some reason they all seem okayish for me. Not perfect, but not bad.
but does Rika say the funny "nipah" lines
So cute Nipah ❤
As a sub guy who watched this in dub in 2014 and today, the old dub is nostalgic, fun to listen to and look back on, but is it good? No. The new one isn't perfect by any means, but I think it is better than the old.
This anime looks adorable. I think I’ll watch it to relax.
not sure if you're kidding, but don't be fooled lol. it's actually a pretty dark anime and is very bloody
I kinda like keichis 2020 dub voice
I really like Grant’s Keiichi, but even then that’s because I played DRV3 and he did a really good job as Shuichi Saihara
Oh i see, after V3's ending Shuichi reincarnated into Keiichi
There's clearly a lot of nostalgia bias for the 2006 show in the community. Let's face it, that dub was awful. 2020 is better but only by a little bit. Keiichi's voice is significantly better and more fitting and so is Satoko's. The rest are... eh. Rika sucks in both. Rena is better in 2006. I kinda like Mion's voice in Gou but I can see it going either way.
@Janeiro I preach, keichi 2006 voice is way better and funnier, Rena, satoko, mion/shion is perfect😂😂😂 and yes the funimation one is ass
I think it’s a 50/50 some good and bad in both versions
I love both
Both have their ups and both have their downs.
I think 2020 Keichi is more gentle than 2006 version depends on the animated expression.
I prefer the 2006 dub the 2020 dub is ok but im use to the 2006 dub and the voices fit bit better honestly
5:30 Satoko's Ohoho Of Eng Dub
I like them both no hate most definitely
I personally like English dubs, but I’d probably both dubs, or the sub.
1:32
SO CUTE!!
I like New Rika VA as Rika but Apphia Yu can't pull off a 'Bernkastel', so she might not cut to be Bernkastel if Umineko having a adaptation. I'm quite a Biased here because Yu can pull off a great performance to other series like the Toaru Series
Rena's mic quality in the 2020 version, oh god.
The 2006 one was better honestly and since they didnt hire the old dub voice actor i would rather watch in sub
Both are good but the 2006 dub is better
why is 2020 version saying the names weird?????????
Cuz they told them to say Rena and Rika's name in a Japanese accent.
All i hear is Ant-Man in the Keiichi 2006. ~_~
I always watch the Japanese dub because it just sounds more pleasing
The CGI waterwheel looks exactly the same lol
I wished bang zoom licensed this anime instead
2006 Rena always sounded like Elmo to me
I found the 2020 version easier to listen to. The 2006 dub has a more a more campy cartoony feel that has a charm of its own though and reminds of how dubbing was back then.
2006 Mion was great. As for 2020, I only loved Keiichi's.
Keiichi is shuchi in the English dub so that makes it better
Higurashi Gou in the mirror world
5:26
No it's not. We have them on our body.
Although... I see what you mean.
You mean elbowing people isn't allowed.
That difference tho!
I can't understand why they tried to make the new dub actors mimic the old dub actors when the old dub was hated lmao. They just sound worse now
I mean the old dub wasn’t that bad tbh
@Janeiro I I agree funimation fucked up the dubbing that’s why I watch sub
His new va reminds me of Izaya but he became a pedo 💀
Nah nah I love the new one, but at the same time the old one is also pretty darn good. Agh sorry I can’t pick.
Wait, this is all a hd remake ?
Love higus dubs
Old or new, dub sounds as good as screeching nails on a blackboard.
Everything js is innocent until you see satoko taking rika's organs out
No hate but I prefer the 2006 one better nostalgia reasons from my childhood. As for the dub in 2020-2021 can't say it's good I prefer sub the only voices that seem bareable to me is mion, shion and Sotakos voice only when she turns into a teenager though I don't find her voice very nice when she's a kid in the village sounds annoying af. Overall prefer sub.
Old keiichi VA it's sound's like Shuichi Saihara Lmao
its actually the same voice actor lol. he played Leon in the first game as well
ong WHY KEICHI SOUND LIKE SOMIC 💀💀😭😭
I grew up on the og dub, but even I thought the Sub was better as a 10 year old who hated reading so many subtitles.
Both dubs are awful but great in their own way's.
Here's my opinion ig, lol.
Og Dub:
I love Keichi and Satakos voices in the original 2006 dub. They were done very very well.
Mion and Shion were done exceptionally well, and even Rena sounded decent in some scene's.
Rika was the only one who sounded awful in the og dub.
It's like she had a frog stuck in her throat.
2020 Dub:
Keichi sounds like a 20 year old man.
20 years old isn't too far from a teenager, so I don't see why that's an issue
both aren't awful...I liked the og one so much, never watch any of when they cry subbed until I was forced too in the later seasons because there was no dub for those.
