EUGENIO DERBEZ: BREAKING THROUGH MACHISMO TO BECOME YOUR TRUE SELF
    The Man Enough Podcast
    Launch Partner: P&G
HOSTS: Justin Baldoni, Liz Plank, and Jamey Heath
    About the Episode:
How can we begin to shift the universal and cultural messages of masculinity in a way that allows us and the next generations to realize our potential as humans? The hilarious, kind, and personable Eugenio Derbez talks openly about the role the “macho man” messages have played in his life. As a Mexican actor, comedian, filmmaker and global superstar, Eugenio shares what he’s learned about true success, the power of presence, and the need for representation. With disarming humor, he invites us to imagine a world where instead of striving to be macho men, we strive to be balanced human beings.

I've seen a couple comments about Liz and her feministic point of views. I personally really enjoy listening to her POV. I feel that she opens the conversation with Justin & Jamey more. Liz gets me thinking and realizing things about myself, love that she's a part of the conversations. Looking forward to more episodes :)

This podcast is so good. These machismo issues are so true. Being a hispanic woman I understood when Eugenio talked about not being able to say anything when other men are saying something unacceptable. I do believe men having the courage to say something is definitely a start. But I also think woman that are mothers also have the responsibility to break the circle and not raise boy with those machismo ideas. I am very passionate about woman rights and equality. But with rights come responsabilities. And as woman we are also part of this machismo circle. We need to change as well.

I grew up in a Mexican household. Dad had this saying “a woman always looses “. It set the tone for many things. The thing is that I don’t blame him and I don’t blame many men. I think as women we also are participant . I would find myself saying similar things growing up. It’s a mutual effort ladies and gents . ♥️

Man, I have been binge watching these so much lately. They have honesty, just been healing my soul. I have been faced with not only being homeless and forced to choose my sanity over toxic family relationships. Where I have found myself choosing one of the worst partners, I can imagine. Who sometimes, I feel in more intune with his physical needs being met, than paying attention to how his actions make me feel.
I feel like I have been kicked so many times in my face from all different aspects, whether it be from my adoptive family. Who honestly, made me feel like all my mistakes were ways to jab or hold against me for the rest of my life.
It wasn't until I turned 27, that I can finally relate to her, and see just how strong she was. Though, then now, I am also reminded, just how important having faith and spritual connection with my creator is.
It wasn't until, I found out, I was pregnant and had a miscarriage the same day, and how my sisters, reacted to the whole thing, that I truly felt alone.
It wasn't until I found out my boyfriend of two year allowed the area we lived in to make him feed, his lower nature. When is words, became like daggers. Well you aren't meeting my sexual needs, so I had to go find someone who could. The dude choose the lowest of lows, a prositute. He thinks it is okay.
So these videos, have really been like a breathe of fresh air. Cause I am trying, my best to work on myself. While still recover, the work on finding a safe place for my cats and I.
I know this journey will be hard but, The creator only throws things in our face that we can handle, right??

As a Latina I always grew up hearing " he's only a man if he has dirt under his finger nails" ... meaning it's not a man's job to look pretty. He's the provider, the hard worker, hes not afraid to get dirty & sweaty... that is what it means to be a true man. Which leads me to say ....
In Latin X culture, it's also presumed that if you have a feminine side or feminine mannerisms, which in actuality are not even feminine at all (like the examples you discuss-putting on makeup/ sun screen/ have a sense of style etc. ) you are gay, and sadly that culture still frowns upon and uses derogatory language to describe that lifestyle/ those who identify as a part of the LGBTQ+ community. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being gay, all humans should be celebrated, however in the Latin culture a lot of men fear being compared to that demographic. Hence why they embrace their macho persona/often describe as toxic masculinity. Just another thing we should discuss on this podcast!
Absolute love this podcast and all that you do! This is such an amazing conversation and I'm glad it's finally happening.

Love this podcast! As someone that grew up in the Latin machismo culture and has had to work hard to unlearn so many of those detrimental cultural messages, it was great to see this conversation. Especially with someone so renowned in latin culture like Eugenio. Big props to Jamey Heath for asking the tough questions and challenging Eugenio to go deep. It was great to Jamey open up about his personal challenges and then pave the way for Eugenio to confront those recurring patterns of infidelity and running away from the women in his life. We need more of that in our society. Like Justin put it, I would have maybe avoided so much debris in the rear view mirror if I had been able to experience conversations like that earlier in life. Also found Liz’s message about us helping our kids to learn these things without women being used as collateral damage to be so profound and important. Keep up the great work!

Ok but when they talked about women being a collateral damage in order to men become a better person, the first thing that came to my mind was olivia rodrigo "good 4 u". Because in the part of the song she says:
"I guess that therapist I found for you, she really helped
Now you can be a better man for your brand new girl"
Its like yeah i help you being healthier, but you left me sad and lonely because you found what you needed, took it and move on like if i was a part of a ladder only built to help you be better.

Definitely. Liz talks about that a lot and keeps us all accountable about the path to being better men and humans. I've caught a few of the beginning of some Man Enough Video's, but I can't watch them, I just hope you can shorten the intro's, because this one is good, but it really gets into the video and what it's about after 7 minutes. Can you try to get it down to 1 minute?? Love your Energy Justin......the world is lucky to have you. And your message is so amazing for the world right now, I'am thinking can someone do graphic intro's......as well......so the beginning doesn't take so long.

I love seeing our Hispanic community being represented here on this podcast. Typically when it comes to being part of a cultural/traditional/immigrant family household it’s common for us to experience these sort of things.
Not feeling as though you could share your feelings or experiences because you know you will receive judgment from them or from others. Or you’d probably feel like a fool for being “too vulnerable” “too emotional” “too much”. Etc..

Great work on this podcast. I say "work" because it's a work in progress and work that needs to be done by all men and I am glad you approach it in this way. One observation I have is that a lot of the "drive" and success that is talked about related to masculinity and what success looks like is also very rooted in capitalism, so it would be interesting to bring up the topic of how capitalism is also affecting all of us - men and women as well as societies focused on individual success vs collective growth. Just a thought. Thanks!

    • @WeAreManEnough
      @WeAreManEnough  2 года назад +1

Thank you so much for your support and feedback. We get into the effects of capitalism a bit more in some other episodes and it's top priority to keep exploring on the show. Success needs to be undefined as much as masculinity.

Thank you - so glad the show resonates with you. The short answer is no. Jamey approaches these conversations, and his life in a lot of ways, with a consciousness about the roles that often fall on us by default. He and Liz have communicated a lot, on camera and off, since this episode, about how to consistently support and elevate each other without taking away the other's autonomy in any way.

I don't know if you already did an episode on the topic, but I really think we need a discussion about beauty standards and a deconstruction of this Ideology, which in my opinion is reinforced by the star system and mass media. I think beauty is a social construct, I think it influences both genders in different ways, I think it deserves a conversation; we need to talk about this imense pressure we live with day by day, especially as women. I think it's unfair that we live in a world where some people - most of the people, 99% are living with the pervasive sentiment that they are not enough as bodies, that in some ways, they are wrong, that they are ugly... like Jamey said... What is beauty, anyways??
I think it is time to go deeper, go and see it as an Eugenistic practice, a harmful construct and of course a source of imense privilege for the few ones that can luckly be given exeple as "model" by the virtue of their genetics, their economic possibilities or some other times, those two combined. ///// And thank you for all the work you are doing! 💛

Thank you so much for your comment. This has certainly come up in a number of conversations, including this week's with Wisdom Kaye, who was named Vogue's most fashionable man on TikTok. There's a powerful moment when Wisdom talks about how he doesn't love his face or feel attractive and Jamey not only tells him he is beautiful, but speaks to the fact that media and society have consistently told us that features like his (i.e. traditionally "Black" features) are not attractive: ruclips.net/video/wWcISA0z9rc/видео.html
This has also come up with Alok, McConaughey, Shawn Mendes, Anthony Padilla and others.

It would be interesting to ask all of these successful men that you have in the show if they think if they were a woman would they have gotten to be as successful as they are now? And why

Wow, that's powerful. Thank you for sharing. Spot on - we have to teach boys to be different much more than we need to "protect" girls. Glennon Doyle speaks about that in her episode - the girls are fine; I'm focused on my boys. ruclips.net/video/Zc2nYtH-exM/видео.html

Thank you. I will watch. even here in Norway, where we are among the top of the most equal countries in the world, we still have to work. and with 3 boys we have to compete with tiktok, youtube and instagram. And realised fathers and men are so important in creating good values!

I enjoyed the podcast but dont know why the girl is talking about feminism when the topic is manhood. I think they should put someone else that doesn't have an agenda and will stay on topic. Pretty exhausting to hear her talk about her "isms" tbh.

Thank you for your perspective. These conversations are rooted in an evolved type of feminism that is not anti-men, rather pro-human. Both Justin and Jamey consider themselves feminists as well. We appreciate your feedback about how Liz affected you and we will share this with her. We believe it is very important to have a consistent female voice and guide, especially one that is so well-informed by data with immense love and compassion for men. Please stick with the show - you'll see an evolution and variance of how Liz, and all the hosts, come across as the episodes proceed.

I feel something similar. I’ve only listen to a few episodes and probably it’s addressed in the others episodes but I think there is 2 things that are causing friction with me ( and it’s probably coming from lack of information ) one of them is that I feel she talks in absolutes without room to argue. And the second point could also be rooted on the same idea, but I believe that since she is using the same language than the other feminists that would complain if you hold the door open for them, she could come across as the same as them when I can clearly see that she cares about men and about all humans in general. Maybe if I keep listening I’ll grow to understand more about this. Also, as a Latino, I could feel in my soul the struggle of trying to say something that goes against your group of male friends. Been playing one episode after the other one. Amazing work. Thank you all

I think the girl ruins the growth of conversation between men on the topic of men. She seems very biased and any chance she gets she tries to push her agenda veering off topic. There probably should have been another man instead. This is coming from a woman.
