I am assuming you are talking about the opening and closing of the regulator during the runround... Well, opening and closing the regualtor a few times is enough to keep the loco moving as apposed to keeping the regulator open and using more steam...
I remember reading about her when she was built in the 50s..was she perhaps a one off with maybe Caprotti valves or something experimental ? please explain great vid thanks!!
Yes, 'LEANDER' was looking smart as ever, But so where all the other stars of the ELR's spring steam gala. From the mighty 9F to the spritely Jinty. PRINCESS ELIZABETH, SHERWOOD FORRESTER, and the jolly green giant 'LORD NELSON'. So much steam, enthusiasts didn't know where to turn.
No, as I found to my cost, last weekend Tim. Lost about half an hour of good video when rain affected my camera, whilst filming the ELR War Weekend. But take a look at my Lancaster Bomber clip. That made up for any losses. Hugh. Er, By the way Tim did you get to see the 'DUKE' on its recent tours down your way?
No negative comments please. I suffered shovel rash on my ankles, shovel handle rash on my ribs and coal cob rash on my toes so please dont knock it, It was still LOL. Negative comments will be deleted.
Yes, we wonder why Mick, this particular driver, works or jerks the regulator like this. He's the only one I've seen who does. Having CAPPROTTI valve gear the DUKE does require a modified technique because the valves are closed by steam pressure on initial movement. I dont think being a convict bars you from getting your hands dirty 3NUNS! LoL
Note how the driver jerks the regulator on and off at the beginning to get the train going in ordered fashion When elderly retired drivers get an occasional 'go' they tend to yank hard on the regulalor and put the engine wheels spinning without traction. Nice video, but.
This is a fantastic video. Thank you very much for showing it.
Worked with this driver on the ELR (Mick) i hold him in the highest regard as a true professional steam man,,, and a good friend.
Very good, and nice to see Bolton Street station (my spiritual home) and Leander also.
Is it a gift, being ambidextrous bilbib?
Bacon & eggs, cooked on the shovel! priceless.

Congrats. From Australia, I have to fork out an airfare plus do 40 hours of engine cleaning 'cos I'm a convict.
Steady on, thats How James watt discovered the power of steam. He spilled his tea pot in his lap!!!!

I would love to do this! What is the red bar being pulled at 1.15?

Nice video, is your camera water proof?

I have to admit, its the privilige of rank. I have to do 20 hours of cleaning and polishing the DUKE for one short cab ride. but jesus, its worth it.

Effectively, the accelerator!
Interesting video; now we all know how to drive a steam engine!

The red bar is the regulator,
