Considering how small Natalie Portman's role was, her performance here was really gut-wrenching. I can't even imagine what that loneliness must have felt like in that time.
I'm a big fan of the book. As in most cases, the movie just doesn't measure up, but you're right. That scene takes the viewer to another place and time with a greater force than any other part of the movie. If the entire movie was such (I know of no such movie btw) than it might even be better than the book. Portman's acting in the scene is that compelling; I am at a loss to think of any better.
You should watch Closer (2004). Same cast in a great film [which also, unintentionally created the most annoying type of girl ever: Manic Pixy Daydream... blegh!]
This hits in the feels, I personally have had this happen except it went farther during grieving so I know the complexity of the emotions these actors are portraying intimately
I have said in other scenes of movies that I have never cried no matter how horrific or sad and others thought that odd. This scene didn't do it either but it did touch me in a way that others haven't. That degree of loneliness is truly sad in that she took such a risk not knowing him and her response was very convincing.
@@mr.champions.league No, I haven't watched it, but read great reviews about it, especially Natalie's acting. I will watch it soon though. Currently, in this covid period, I am exploring different genres, but mostly I watch feel good, inspiring or romantic ones. I felt their chemistry was good in the interviews they did, the one where it was clearly evident was the google searched queries interview. I definitely feel they have great comfort level and probably had a thing for each other during their prime. Respect/admiration/love can be seen when they talk to one another.
@the writer in me Oh god yes. School shooting in the beginning was used for shock value & then just horribleness followed by more horribleness. Natalie Portman's worst film in the last decade & that's saying something if you ever saw Lucy in the Sky.
Absolutely, I feel there is some inherent chemistry between them and I saw that even in couple of interviews. They definitely have a thing, during their prime they seemed like a perfect couple. Feel like they wasted an opportunity to be life partners.
Those who don’t understand this scene soon will in 2022. Soon WW3 with Russia and our own civil war… all the young men will be gone to fight. Many women won’t know what to do (not all, but many). Love the one you’re with.
I've wanted to watch this movie for quite some time. For one reason or another, it just didn't work out. Until I find myself in possession of this movie, thinking with my luck it's be scar arched and unwatchable, I tried it. Looking back (after watching it) it was a beautiful movie, to say that it was quality in every aspect (not like many movies nowadays). It's a story of love, torn apart by war, life and evil. Through it all, they fight to be with one another. Great characters (except the Joker-like Bosie). A few unnecessary scenes amd lines that take away from the story and potential of its greatness, but other than that it's almost perfection. A movie I'd definitely re-watch, but hesitate to keep. If you enjoy a struggling romance or sad films, this might be the watch for you. #MajestikReviews
Fletcher DeMaine The loniness of war Natlie Portman's character loved one is off fighting leaving her character to fend as best she for her and her baby
Her husband was killed in the American Civil War and she has a baby. This soldier was passing her cabin and needed a place to stay for the night. She invited him in from the corn crib. They're both emotionally hurting.

In the hardest of times... some just need to be held. This scene is very humbling.
If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with.
That could be a great song !
Not the prettiest saying, but certainly one that's true!!

Best part of the movie. True human needs.

This movie is a rare example of being better than the book, by some degree.@@treebeardtheent2200
I actually thought Jude and Natalie had better chemistry than Jude and Nicole.
Yeah, me too

Yup
I never really understood this scene until I got older.
Same here
Only a genius could create a scene like this one
War is hell. For more than just the people fighting it.
Oh how I understand her feeling of loneliness. Too well.
And how are you doing now?
Honestly, Judd Law's character probably would have just stayed there with Natalie Portman forever and raised the kid.
I was thinking the same thing. Weirdly, I thought he had better chemistry with her.
Too bad he decided to return to his lover. 🤔😢
Ada needs him too.
@@josephdockemeyer6782 He did. And Natalie is gorgeous. And obviously likes him. And they would have had sex that night.
Or she could have taken her baby and joined him and Ada on the farm with everyone else

Natalie isn't in this film long, but my god, does she shine.

Just saw Natalie in V for Vendetta; the greatest LOVE STORY I've ever seen. She is a stunning beauty.
What a kind moment. Beautiful
For her time in this film Natalie killed it.
Probably the only scene in the movie that outdid the book.
Thou just a movie, this scene could happen to any of us who loses their loved one😢😢
Natalie Portman is very beautiful 😘😘😘😘😘🌷🌷🌷
Jude Law is one stunning looking man. Just couldnt be anymore handsome than that scene in the movie. Laying in bed he is gorgeous
Best actors ever
Absolutely, their acting and chemistry is marvelous.

Wow! Im not even a fan, but Natalie is a great actress.

so powerful

THEY SHOULD WORK AGAIN TOGETHER
Well they've done three films in 17 years. Cold Mountain, Closer & the horrendous Vox Lux.

A heartbreaking scene.

If you think watching it again is worthwhile, you might try reading the book. You will not be disappointed.
