    whilst that's a lot of fish, there are far worse methods out there. They guys are not trawling the bottom, they are not destroying the seabed with giant chains, theres no innocent bycatch, no dolphins, sharks or other endangered species trapped in nets, they're simply raking in the mackerel, which are in abundance.

    I could have done with a set up like that when I used to go fishing for them on hand-lines with my father in Scotland. Removing fish by hand from 15 hooks really eats up the time when you hit a run of them.

    Well done guys! Land people don't realize that fishing with line and hooks you catch only the 10% of the fish. And the half of the days year around you don't fish at all becuse of the weather conditions. :)

    • @gianttunafisher
      @gianttunafisher  7 лет назад +3

      yes...they have no idea what they are talking about.....this is the best way to fish mackerel....no by catch...no destroying the bottom.....and yes..like you said...this is a rare day...cold temps...no need for ice...half hr from shore....

  • @gianttunafisher

    @wishmaster200...you could do that ....but you don't get the same feel for the fish in my opinion....plus one line is over opposite side of the boat with 2 lines over other side.....when one side is being reeled in...the other is being let out....always a line in the water that way to keep the fish around the boat.

    Nice rig 5400lb or so that day? We use the pipes but not the reels.
    As far as the "raping the ocean" people you should do a bit of research before you make such ridiculous comments. If you really care, try to stop large corporations and countries from dragging and using drift nets. Those types of fishing kill everything including the spawning beds(in the case of dragging) and some drift nets used are MILES long and kill everything that gets tangled in them. This is a target specific way of fishing with very little by-catch and about as environmentally friendly as you can get. These fellows probably only get 25-35 cents a pound and that was a GOOD day, you don't see the days they spend driving around looking for fish and only catching a few hundred pound or nothing at all. Ask your government why they have systematically shut down most inshore fisheries in favour of larger, more destructive offshore fisheries if you really care about the planet. Small owner operated vessels using in-shore methods are the least destructive and most in touch with the ecosystem fishery possible and should be celebrated.

    it's fully sustainable, the hook size limits the capture of immature fish and allows them to grow up to spawn at least once and the market isn't large enough to destroy the fishery, if there aren't enough left, they'll stop fishing since there won't be any money in it. that's sustainable fishing, let the fishermen dictate when it's fished out, not the government.
