    I am over 50, and I still get choked up every time I listen to this song. I love Charlie Brown. It's still so hard to believe that it's been 16 years since Charles Schulz passed away. Feb. 12, 2000.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    *****UPDATE*****
    This is something I wrote in 2020, for the 20th anniversary of Charles Schulz's passing. A small story in his memory is all I wanted to write. This is what came out.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    WE LOVE YOU, CHARLIE BROWN
    Story by Nacho-Mamma
    Characters created by Charles Schulz
    Charlie Brown laid in bed talking with his faithful pal Snoopy, as his friends quietly entered his room. Wiping the tears from his eyes, he smiled and greeted the gang he had known for as long as he could remember. They gathered around his bed, and asked him how he was doing. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. They listened in silence as he told them everything.
    He opened his eyes, wiped another tear away and looked around at the old gang and smiled the best he could. With their heads down, they slowly walked out of the room when Charlie asked Linus to close the door and stay for a minute more. Linus pulled a chair over and sat beside the bed so they could talk.
    "Why didn’t you tell me before, Charlie Brown?”, Linus asked. “I don’t understand. We talk about everything.”
    Charlie said, “I know. But, there just didn’t seem to be a good time. It’s not everyday you have to tell a friend you've got cancer. I’m sorry. Besides, I didn’t want anyone treating me any different than they always have.”
    Linus said, “I get it, Charlie Brown. So, what are you going to do now?"
    "Well Linus, there's nothing they can do now. So, I need to ask you a favor. I know how much your little brother has wanted a dog of his own, and how much he loves to play with Snoopy.”
    “He sure does love that dog of yours, Charlie Brown.”
    "So, would you take care of Snoopy for me? I know he will be loved.”
    “You know you don’t have to ask me that, Charlie Brown. Besides, for as long as we’ve been friends, somethings are just a given. I will have to ask my parents, but I’m sure they will understand and say, “Yes.””
    “Can I ask one more favor?”
    “Sure you can. What is it?"
    “Would you just sit with me for a little while?”
    “Sure I will, Charlie. I’ll be right here.”
    "Thank you Linus. You’re my best friend.”
    “You know, of all the Charlie Browns in the world, you’re the greatest of them all!”
    Linus sat holding Charlie’s hand. Charlie closed his eyes, took a deep breath and quietly exhaled for the last time.
    “Charlie…Charlie Brown?” Linus whispered, choking back tears.
    Snoopy slowly crawled up beside Charlie Brown, laid his head on his chest, and let out a small wimper. Linus gently stroked Snoopy and assured him, ‘I’m sorry old boy. I’ll miss him too!”
    Sobbing, Linus turned and walked out of the room where the rest of the gang waited. They gathered in the door holding hands, and cried for their friend.
    As they left, one by one, Lucy walked over to Charlie Brown’s bed, gently held his hand and whispered, “We love you, Charlie Brown.”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    As with pretty much everything I write, I only write for myself. So, I've never allowed anymore to read this before, until now.
      Just now finding this gem after it has always been in my mind (the 40-something club). The resonance on the vocals and orchestral passages are gripping. Every character in the Peanuts series lets us know it's ok to be vulnerable. (2:29 and 3:29). Using boofdfast's previous comments below:
      boofdfast4 months agoLike he said...We're all a boy named Charlie Brown. Charlie never harmed a soul or never intentionally tried to. He tries and persists, but sometimes, he just can't seem to win or get it right. We've ALL been there... It doesn't matter who you are. Lovely tune.
    Charlie was the piece of humanity in his world, he was a good person. All the other characters were mean and cruel (except Linus) He wasn't bright, tall, athletic, popular, or anything. He was the kid next door, but doesn't that make him the perfect protagonist. Maybe he should have given up, but he kept trying no matter what. I always felt like Charlie because I never was good at anything. Charlie did have at least one good day, and that makes life worth living. Maybe we all are really Charlie Brown deep down.
      Im Charlie Brown still. You should never feel for him. He as you said is someone who never gives up and in the end things sometimes do work. When they do fail he moves on and tries something else. That's why I love him. Also more than one person like him. He just isn't the most popular.
    When I hear this song, so many things about Charlie Brown pass through my head. The way he & Linus lean on the brick wall near the pond and talk about life, the way he sits in his chair and reads a book, and of course the way he never stops trying to kick that football. If there was such thing as a "I tip my hat to you" emoji, I would plant them the amount of times I'd wanted to like this video. Thank you, Charlie Brown for a wonderful childhood and NEVER giving up. 👍
    Charlie Brown is a character that we can all relate with. He's not just a bland, fill-in , everyman because he has a personality and goals. It's just that those goals resonate with all of us, the wish to succeed.
    Charlie goes into every situation with a smile on his face and despite the outcome always being failing to fly a kite or kicking the football; he never gives up and tries again with determination. He never wins, but that's okay with him.
    He's able to say that he did try and in the light of his biggest failure (the Spelling Bee) Linus has to remind him that this stuff keeps going, so why quit now? Why stop when you'll never know the outcome? Why give up when you can try?
    Charlie Brown embodies all of us. We start out as small with endeavors and we all work towards our goals despite failure because.. well.. why not?
    Like the shadows of the morning,
    Climb up to the August afternoon.
    Charlie has a way,
    Of picking up the day,
    Just by walking slowly in a room.
    Maybe it’s a kind of magic
    That only little boys can do.
    But seeing Charlie smile,
    Can make you stop awhile,
    And get you feelin' glad you’re you.
    He’s only a boy named Charlie,
    A Boy Named Charlie Brown.
    He’s just the kid next door,
    Perhaps a little more,
    He’s every kid in every town.
    Well the world is full of lots of people,
    Here and there and all around.
    But people after all,
    Start out as being small,
    We’re all A Boy Named Charlie Brown.
    Now the shadows of the morning
    Have gone beyond the August afternoon,
    And Charlie's had his day,
    His very special day,
    His Morning and his Evening and his Noon.
    The World is full of lots of people,
    Here and there and all around,
    But people after all,
    Start out as being small,
    I had to listen to this song today upon hearing of Peter Robbins’ death. The poor guy struggled with so much, but he gave voice to one of the greatest characters of all time.
    Linus says in the film “you notice something, Charlie Brown?…the world didn’t come to an end.” He’s right, but I’m glad to see that it paused long enough to remember a good man, a boy named Peter Robbins who gave voice to a boy named Charlie Brown.
      My mother, loved Rod McKuen, bought concert tickets around 1970 for the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Just her and me. After the concert we went around the back of the venue. There was the stage door. The kind guard let us in, backstage. I looked and found Rod's dressing room. He was talking with friends. I got my mother, took her back there. Rod was so gracious to my dear mother. Long since gone, I think of my mom tonight.
    Growing up, I WAS Charlie Brown. I was that kid that only had one or two real friends and the rest of the kids I knew merely tolerated me. Not because of anything I did, but because that's just how it happened. This song, and indeed the whole movie, has always resonated with me deeply because I knew what it felt like to be that guy. Funny story, after seeing this movie for the first time as a kid, I entered the school spelling bee and in true Charlie Brown fashion, fell flat on my face and got wiped out in the first round.
    I'm hoping to make animated films myself, and if I can make something that's half as good as this, I'll consider it a success.
    I first listened to this song after rewatching A Boy Named Charlie Brown during my freshman year of college. I was alone, and I didn’t know anyone there. Despite making friends with a group that made fun of me, ignored me, and rejected me a lot, reading Peanuts strips and watching the specials and films made me feel better. When I got home during a break, I realized that I still had my real friends at home, which made me happy. I was driving back to my house after seeing them, and this song came on. I just started crying. I think it’s because I knew that I wasn’t going to be friends with my college group for long; I knew I didn’t really fit in with the environment of the group, and really, the whole party-life of college. Sure enough, a bit over a year, my college friends falsely accused me of things I didn’t do, which forced me to experience the rest of college without a friend group. I’ve got a year left, and I’m now joined by my brother and some new friends I hang out with occasionally. I still feel alone a lot, but I only have a year left. And hey, it could always be worse. I look back to this song with gratitude and smiles, reminding me that life can be hard for everyone, but the grass truly is greener on the other side. Sometimes life gives you a sad ending to a chapter, but it’s not the ending to the book. Never give up. Just like Good ol’ Charlie Brown.
    I was in my car waiting for the light to change and I saw a young boy crossing the street coming home from school. He looked to be about 10 or 11 and wore black rimmed glasses. I could see that the lens were very thick even from a distance. He was stocky and had on big clunky brown shoes, you just know his mom promised he would grow into soon. He had a heavy backpack, probably filled with books and such. Just an ordinary kid, Right? I also saw two other boys crossing in the other direction. They were cool kids and they were really enjoying themselves talking and laughing in a very animated fashion. They passed the first boy as if he weren't there at all.
    The young boy with the glasses looked at them though. He looked and saw them heading somewhere he wouldn't be invited. He saw a camaraderie he might never experience or a friendship he could not form. It showed all over his face. And then he looked down at the ground and trudged on.
    I didn't really think of it again until I got home. I came to RUclips and sought out this song. I remember being a young boy and feeling that I didn't fit in. I listened to the song and it is a beautiful performance by Rod McKuen and it has always resonated with me.
    I wish I could play it for that young boy I saw today. 50 years have gone by since I first heard it and it always brings back the memories of those times and without waxing over the pain a young person can feel, it still somehow manages to sooth at the same time.
    I've been a fan of the Peanuts comic strip since the age of eight. I'm 52 now, and I can still identify with these wonderful characters. I have cerebral palsy. I could definitely relate to Charlie Brown"s self-esteem issues, and having few friends. I love. A Boy Named Charlie Brown to this day. Not only for this tune, but also Vince Guraldi"s great jazz scores. My favorite part is near the end of the film, when Linus tells him that even though he didn't win the spelling bee, the world didn't come to an end. He'll have more opportunities to try. So many people focus on his bad traits, they forget the hopeful, optimistic side of his personality.
    My mother, loved Rod McKuen, bought concert tickets around 1970 for the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Just her and me. After the concert we went around the back of the venue. There was the stage door. The kind guard let us in, backstage. I looked and found Rod's dressing room. He was talking with friends. I got my mother, took her back there. Rod was so gracious to my dear mother. Long since gone, I think of my mom tonight.
    It takes a big heart to be a Charlie Brown. Charlie had lots of strong reasons to give up and not try. And more times than not, he failed at what he did. Be he always did it with a good heart and the fact that even when he fell he stood right back up knowing he would fall again makes him a very special boy. A boy named Charlie Brown.
      For me that time was in 1964 when I was a senior in high school. It seemed like such a time of innocence compared to today. Yes, the threat of nuclear annihilation hung over our heads, but we young people didn't focus on that. We were preparing to go out and make our mark upon the world; and we cherished our friendships, some that have lasted through the years. The church camping trips, school dances, our clumsy shyness on dates, trips to the beach and peeling our sunburned shoulders, taking Driver's Education and then buying my first car that burned a quart of oil every two days, outings to Dairy Queen for chocolate sundaes, tossing around a football in the back yard, swatting mosquitoes at the drive-in theater. "Those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end. We'd sing and dance forever and a day."
I didn't know who Rod McKuen was back then, but all these years later I discovered McKuen's artistry and have become a huge fan of McKuen and own several of his books of poetry.     This guys voice is just beautiful. This song, this movie, and this whole franchise in general always cheers me up when I’m feeling insecure, overwhelmed, or worried. I was the Charlie Brown in my school-always picked on for not fitting “the standards.” I was nerdy, talked a lot, missed the memo often, had trouble doing certain things (which made me a huge target for the know-it-all kids), and was just generally “different.” After a few years of being antagonized, I realized; why should THEY have a say in how YOU are? Why should THEY judge YOU!? And ever since that metaphorical lightbulb popped over my head, life’s been a lot better. Sure, I still have my sad moments, and I still have a lot of problems to fix, but I’m doing a lot better than I was in middle school. I’m still Charlie Brown, but I’m okay with that.
    A Boy Named Charlie Brown is more than just a kids film. It’s a film that tells people to realize that when you feel worthless, when you feel like you let everyone down, it's gonna be ok. It's ok to feel bad. It's ok to feel sad. It's ok to feel depressed. It's ok to have negative feelings but “it’s not okay to give up. *it never is or was.*”Feel what you feel but just remember for the love of God DO NOT EVER GIVE UP!
    This was my idea of the "sad" version of a animated film as a child. Disney and Warner Brothers made happy or wacky movies. This was my first example of a sad one, and this song really set the tone for it. I felt very morose listening to it. I look forward to Blue Sky's movie, but I doubt it will capture the depressing feeling that this movie had.
    • @Klee15
      @Klee15 9 лет назад +20
      andrewkful I don't know if "sad" is the right word. It is certainly realistic about disappointment, in a harmless kind of way. But I liked the ending. Movies where the main character achieves their goals are inspiring. But I think it's just as inspiring to see a character fail and still have the fortitude to dust themselves off and try again.
      It's not so much a sad movie as it is a serious one. I deveinatly tear up watching it. I get why some of CBs movies don't end happy. We're supposed to learn the harsh realities and keep trying. This ending tho is one of 2 exceptions (the other being Red Truck). I really think had one friend told him they were proud of him, he could have lost and still ended on a good note. I know the idea is to keep going but I just don't get over Charlie Brown losing and being disowned by his friends. In spite of this, I don't call it a bad ending. I call it an important one. We're all going to have bad in our life but eventually we will get over it. I'm glad a cartoon ends like that
    I have failed at almost everything, if there was a character I relate to the most it’s Charlie Brown, he and I are alike.
    I recently had another failure I was laid off from my job, but just like Charlie Brown I have never given up, because people after all really start off small and we are all a boy named Charlie Brown.
    I’ve never given up just like Charlie, and I’ve never stopped trying to do my best like Charlie Brown.
    I think Charlie Brown reflects on us on who we are we people we all start off small somewhere in life, maybe perhaps we all are a Charlie Brown.
