  • Dolforwyn Castle is a medieval fortress located in Powys, Wales. Constructed between 1273 and 1277 by Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the last sovereign Prince of Wales, it served as a strategic stronghold in the Welsh Marches. The castle's design reflects typical military architecture of the period, featuring a rectangular layout with robust defensive walls, round towers at the corners, and a central keep.
Dolforwyn's primary purpose was to assert Llywelyn's dominance in the region and to control the Severn Valley. However, it fell to English forces led by Roger Mortimer in 1277, just a few years after its completion. Subsequently, it was occupied and maintained by the English until it was abandoned in the early 14th century.
Today, Dolforwyn Castle is a scheduled monument, with significant portions of the original structure still visible. It offers insights into the turbulent history of Welsh-English conflicts and the architectural styles of the late 13th century. The site is managed by Cadw, the historic environment service of the Welsh Government, and is open to the public for exploration.
