Casting a Winter Ant Colony with Molten Zinc (Cast

  • In this video I cast a winter ant colony with molten zinc. Winter Ants (Prenolepis imparis species) are very active in the winter and usually have a single colony entrance with a long thin tunnel leading to pad like chambers fairly deep in the ground. I was not aware of this type of ant until I started this project and they first caught my attention last winter, being the only ants that were actually active at near freezing temperatures. These are also known as false honey ants.
    The tunnels are very narrow, being only around 3/16" in diameter on average. I used zinc on this cast because it tends to stay in a liquid state for longer than aluminum, so it can really flow deep through the deep and narrow tunnels.
    The final cast is 40" (3'-4") deep, which is by far the deepest colony that I have cast so far. The chambers are fairly small being only around 3.5" at their widest. The final cast is mounted on an oak board with supports for the cast at various places along the cast. The narrow tunnels broke in several places when I was digging it up, so I had to mount it in a way that pieced it together and used glue at several places.
    See detailed pictures of the resulting display at www.anthillart....

    People here are complaining about the ants dying, when they are only five northern white rhinos left in the world. Compared to the ant population of 800,000,000,000,000. There are other animals that need our help and ants are not one of them

      Actually, what Wernbread said is not true. Winter ants dig deep tunnels because they live in extremely cold climates. They also make many "outposts" or mini-nests near the main nest (so the main one is quite small). So when a worker is foraging for food, it is at risk of hypothermia but then can pop into one of the outposts to warm up and then keep searching.

And they made the path thin so that the cold air will barely get through their chambers!! Amazing!! And yess I was really surprised when I saw this cast. It was damn deep!! So simplistic and different compared to the colonies of other ants. And they work work work in the cold so that they wouldn't freeze and would keep in heat!!

    ok alot of people are commenting saying 'poor ants" or "thats so cruel" or "inhumane." Did you guys ever stop and think that maybe he was some type of teacher who uses these ant colony sculptures for education? Is it bad for him to WANT to further his and other people's education? Now I do respect people's opinion. But here's a scenario for you: what if you had infestation of ants what would you do? You would call an exterminator. And what do exterminators do? They KILL them. Of course i know you wouldn't sit there with an infestation of ants and your house and go "awwww they're making my house their house" Ants are common everywhere. This is not inhumane, this is not cruel, this is human this is what people do. Now imagine that same scenario yet with mosquitos. I bet you would lose ur damn mind and you would call an exterminator to EXTERMINATE them. Lots of people in this world EAT ants. Are they cruel people to because they're eating ants? are they inhumane now? Lots of people eat ant larvae raw or cooked. That's not inhumane that's life. Some of you are sitting here making it seem like he abused an animal or something. And no im not saying he abused insects. Now again I do respect everyone's opinion on this but some of you really need to get over yourselves

The common joke is that the soil is 50% rocks, and the sad part is that is most likely a understatement. To dig here (by hand) you are required to have a shovel, and a iron skewers.

    casting ant colonies really gives u a perspective on how they build their homes. fire ants have multiple alcoves and make sharp geometric angles while they dig, making their colonies compact and complex, like a house with too many doors. carpenter ants on the other hand prefer long and thick colonies. they have about two branches off the main entrance but that's it, they are simple and easy to navigate. and with the winter ants they prefer to go deep underground before making small alcoves in their colony. this is rly interesting omg

      classicsonic77 Last time I checked zinc doesn't float. I don't think you understand what I'm saying. Imagine the main anthole tunnel going straight down. Now Imagine at the bottom, another tunnel comes out and curves upward to make a U-bend. That second tunnel may not be filled in completely with zinc if it goes high enough, because no zinc will travel down it, and no zinc will defy gravity to move up it.

    • @todd1896
      @todd1896 10 лет назад +32

      ***** Now that I think about it you are right, the mass of the zinc would force it up the other tunnels. But really, why did you have to include that last sentence? Is this really a topic worth getting hostile about? I don't think I said anything remotely deserving of that kind of rude response.

This is an interesting video that puts into thought: why and how do the ants make what they make? Why did this colony make a long pillar extending deep into the ground? This way we can see the shape of an ant burrow without the need for a glass ant farm with limited space. Who knows, it may help.

      I have some questions! How long does it take to cool the metal before you can dig it out, and how brittle is it as you're digging. I do know my way with very high temperature materials, but I've never done anything like this! It's really interesting, and I don't think enough people realize what a genuine menace ants can be when left unchecked.

      In any case, ants are a hazardous nuisance. Would killing them with pesticides be any less cruel to them? Not really. But its us or them, so we might as well make some cool art out of their homes before we exterminate them.

  • @igyan5
    @igyan5 9 лет назад +11

    I've watched a lot of these videos and I see the same comments all the time. Now I am not one to tell anyone that their opinion is wrong, but I say this to all the humans, note the specificity, who are commenting on these videos. Consider this: In the grand scope of the world, nature, the underwater crevices, the underground tunnels, the volcanic chasms, and the verdant forests teeming with bacteria and other complex organisms, where exactly does your morality fit in? We as humans tend to comment on things like this, through a moral lens in which we judge each other's actions towards other animals. But in the savannah where the cheetah kills the gazelle, who or what exactly is judging whether or not that is wrong? I say: nobody. I think that we humans need to realize that the only reason that this is even a dilemma is because we are of a high enough intellect to possess such a thing as morality and we must learn to distance our minds from the moral bubble humanity has created for itself. This is wrong? This is right? Why because we humans deem it as such? We are simply just another species of animal living on this planet, debating about organisms that are not and will not ever be aware of our presence until the moments before one of us decides to help or kill them. Just like the gazelle doesn't know the cheetah is there until it kills it. We say that we expect better of our species but this is one truth, no other species on EARTH expects better of us except for us. Think about this the next time you kill a fly, hug a puppy, or eat a burger.

    Just for the curiosity. Do ants feel pain, fear of death?

    • @Tracequaza
      @Tracequaza 9 лет назад +11

      Pretty sure all sentient creatures do. When you get hurt, it triggers your nerves and those send messages to your brain to invoke the feeling of pain. These messages are sent to help stop the action because it is damaging the body in some way. The fear of death must be present in all creatures because without it there would be no reason to live. The fear of death is in the brain to help the organism live long enough to reproduce. And pain is needed to prevent death, which is a main goal of living creatures in general.

    • @walruskimjungun957
      @walruskimjungun957 9 лет назад +3

      Except ants cannot feel pain because they have such a tiny brain.

    • @Tracequaza
      @Tracequaza 9 лет назад +8

      WalrusKimJungUn No, even if they have a tiny brain they still need to be informed if cells are dying. Ants need to reproduce like all animals, and so need to be informed if something is damaging them.

      If an ant colony with a vertical tunnel reaching over 3' the ground isn't interesting to you and a few dollars worth of zinc is, then you're missing the point here and are definitely in the wrong place. Not many people have seen more colony casts in person than I have and this is one of only two casts that I have actually kept for my self and would not sell it at any price. It's on my wall right now and looks amazing to me.

Bulldog ants will swarm anything in their path and devour it in no time. Don't act like humans are the only terrifying force in the world.
