So.... after watching your shows for the better part of a couple years, I finally bit the bullet and bought the handheld polarity tester (the red light green light one). Lo and behold, my home speakers were out of phase! Thank you for the great videos!! Keep em coming blokes.
I had install diaries playing whilst I was folding laundry and this one motivated me to go to the garage and use speaker pop whereupon I found one tweeter out of phase. I am thankful that my crossovers are easily accessible. I'm all phased up now. Thanks guys keep up the good work
That is to cool
When he says “phase”, he actually means polarity.
An opposition of polarity between two speakers will cause a “phase effect”; its like the sound cancels itself out.
Phase is when two speakers play the same sound and one of the speakers sound is delayed causing the sounds to be “out-of-sync” with each other
Exactly, he should probably educate himself before confusing people trying to learn
Once again, thank you! For a once in a blue moon speaker install I got a polarity checker app and first tested it on the home stereo and it works great or at least gets the job done. I bluetoothed the pulse tone to the stereo unit. I am from the UK and am looking to install Vibe Slick 6" speakers. The component variant up front and the two way variant in the rear doors. I have had good experiences with Vibe Audio equipment in my previous vehicles. Keep producing great stuff, as I think you are educating people in more than car audio but also the basic electronic elements too. 👍
Thanks! Love the Speaker Pop App. Really helped validate proper polarity quickly. Great video as well thank you. :)
Fantastic Video. Thanks for making this. This is great!
Great informative video guys!
Thank you so much!
Great video! Thank you 👍
you guys are the best . simple clean installs . I would like to see more info on paa3 set up and cabel you use .
pissed off thank you, yes we are planning some.
You have inspired me to try new things now thanks .I have a paia3 have no idia how to use it .
Was a video ever made on how to use the speaker pop app?
Very helpful do more videos like this. Great job.
That is what we are hoping to do, thanks
Question : i bought a pair of CT 6.5 component set when i go to wire the tweeter to the passive Xover the cover shows + - the circuit board shows - + do i go by the circuit board or the xover cover ??
I have learned a lot from your video but can't not figure out what would be the right size wire for the door speaker
This is really good to know, thanks Dean!!
El_Skippy you bet, thank you
Thanks for the head's up about those apps. I finally got my car wired correctly!
Radio Citrus Podcast sweet
GREAT VIDEO... WILL DEFINITELY BE CHECKING ALL OF MY SPEAKERS...
WHY ARE YOU YELLING AT ME
@@bobbob123ful
LOL...
Question I bought 3 way front door speakers for my 2019 dodge charger for better treble but all I get is bass does that mean my polarity is switched???
What type of tools you are using like small torch. Pliers , wire cutters .
Thank you
What is the right size wire for your door speakers
Lets remember that phase and polarity are NOT the same thing. take sine wave A, reverse the polarity and now wave B is a 180 degree reversal of wave A. Do the same thing with phase and you are playing with time, phase gradually shifts, which can still result in a 180 degree flip. Time alignment changes relative phase between speakers place in different locations.
Any idea how to wire in EQ-693 speakers?
Have you ever had a test where it show in polarity at first but would show out of polarity back and forth in and out of polarity as your testing with a polarity tester?? Just my back door speakers will do that while the front speakers are in polarity all the time! 🆘 Thxs for the videos!
I’m also wondering this
If speaker are fitted under dash and we dont want to uninstall, we only have wires out side , so how we detect polarity of speaker wire. May be by multimeter or other way plz guide me !
okay.......... so what causes it to be out of phase so I can avoid doing it? And if it's not in phase do I jsut swap the negative and positive? You ansered no questions
Thanks for recommending speaker pop. Found my mistake in seconds!
+Todd Wood very cool
Nice video, i have a FH168 but not cd or any device to generate "tones" for the test. Where i download o generate?
Reinhard Tejada go to www.studiosixdigiral.com in the down load section. They have a speaker pop signal down load.
@@FiveStarCarStereoInc bruh what link is that?
Thanks
so if the factory dash tweeters are out of phase would you change the wiring or leave it. it sounds fine. 2011 Dodge NITRO with ddx9903s.
+Ethan Harrison thanks for asking this question on the live show. I hope the answer made sense
Yes it did. I also read some where that if there's an in line capacitor it might show negative phase due to the charge on it. I just wanted your opinion. Thanks again.
So this is just to check if your speaker wires are hooked up backwards???
does it also work for tweeters?
tony49492 Yes all speakers work on the same principle.
When I tested this with the app it reads all 4 speakers with a -, so are they in phase with each other or all out of phase?
i need to know about phase all speakers should in +phase or -phase
Just so they are all moving the same, it is good. Sometimes if a tweeter is on the dash,it will be out of phase with the door speakers for imaging. It is not always that way and it is something to play with.
Why does when ever I pan the balance to either side especially the passenger side the bass is really good, but when I center the balance the bass doesn't seem as present because the difference is huge to my ears. I drive a regular cab GMC sierra
That is exactly what happens when one of the speakers are wired backwards. Did u even watch the video
@@devnull182 actually I did and my speakers are in phase. Thanks for replying to a 3yr old comment
Suh Duh did you ever get it fixed? If so, what was the solution?
So if I wire my speaker wrong it will be playing inwards?
if ALL your speakers play "inwards" you are in phase. if ALL your speakers play "outwards", you are in phase. if ONE of those speakers is going in, while the others are going out, you are OUT of phase. this is audible too; if you have almost no bass response, there could be a speaker out of phase. you should be compressing the air inside the vehicle, but speakers out of phase just move the air around.
Zack Ryan and
It will only sound bad if some speakers are in phase and some are out of phase. If all of the speakers are out of phase, the speakers will sound good to my understandings.
I think the problem is people are not understanding what phase means regarding speakers. All phase means is the speakers are moving in unison in the same direction (either in or out) at the same time. So, if both speakers are connected "backwards" they are in phase. Remember, audio signals are alternating current (AC.)
Can you check it via multimeter?
Only if your meter can measure negative and positive ohms.
Will the app work with the phones Bluetooth instead of the aux cord
Yes
OisinClarkeMusic have you done a video using the app Bluetooth
@@Oisin.Clarke I was going to ask the same..I do have an aux but its behind the radio.
Why do my door speakers pop red no matter which way it is wired?
6:21 Joss Stone?
Where's Fernando?
Seriously I found this video informative. Now what if someone has removed all speakers and one is left with wires hanging. Can you tell without hooking up a speaker using one of these devices or do you use a multimeter?
Fernando was out having a Baby boy last week. Yes the PT-9A will do it all.
I bought the Amazon one but it didn't come with a CD. Where can I find the pop sound needed to check the phase? Thanks for your help!
Go here you can down load a test track
www.studiosixdigital.com/support/downloads-2/
+Five Star Car Stereo cool! thank you very much!
+Five Star Car Stereo thanks again! I did find that one of my front speakers was out of phase. also my subs were out of phase? could the subs being out of phase cause them to blow? Or just not sound as good as they should?
+rog3775 mainly just sound bad. If you turned the gain up to compensate for sounding bad, maybe.
Can use a 9 volt battery
Ya but, phase is not equal to polarity. FR and FL could both have proper polarity, and individual speakers could still be out of phase. It's easy to check polarity. Phase requires microphone, DSP, etc. to actually check the phase and then adjust it ... presuming a DSP was installed.
From what I know, well designed passive crossovers are designed to account for phase and are automobile specific, as in not for a house/concert hall/whatever.
So that's why, for one reason, people who go all active can lead to a system that sounds like crap.
Speakers do not have electrical "polarity." If you have two speakers with unmarked speaker terminals, connect a 9v battery to the speaker and observe the direction the speaker cone travels (either in or out.) Look where the positive terminal of the battery is connected and mark that terminal (pen, scratch, tape or nail polish etc.)
Next, connect the battery to the other speaker (or multiple speakers) and do the same thing.
Make sure the speaker cone is moving in the same direction as the first speaker you marked. If the speaker is moving in the opposite direction, reverse the battery polarity and it will now move in the same direction as the other speaker. Now, look where the positive terminal of the battery is connected and mark that terminal (pen, scratch, tape or nail polish etc.)
Next, connect the (+) of the amplifier output to the speaker terminal you marked and do the same on the other speaker. Your speakers will be in phase and will sound great!
I think the problem is, people are not understanding what phase means regarding speakers. All phase means is the speakers are moving in unison in the same direction (either in or out) at the same time. So, if both speakers are connected "backwards" they are in phase. Remember, audio signals are alternating current (AC.) A phase problem only occurs if one speaker is moving out while the other speaker is moving in. In this case, pick one speaker and reverse the wires and you'll be in phase.
The good news is, if you don't know any of this stuff, you'll have a 50/50 chance of getting it correct.
All true. But this is still super useful information when neither the terminal nor the wires are correctly marked as positive or negative and you're really flying blind.
This guy’s voice reminds me of an actor but I can’t remember who?
If you can't hear when a speaker is out of phase, maybe it's time to read an article rather than go shopping....geezzzz,
Mike Walker not everyone knows you can connect a speaker backwards or that speakers have a polarity. When you have only one speaker how can you tell that it is moving wrong?
