- The abandoned village of Safira is located near Montemor-o-Novo, in the Alentejo. The village is composed of a few ruined houses, a church and, on the South bank of the Safira Creek, a cemetery.
The Church was built on the 15th century when Cardinal Prince D. Afonso was the bishop and it was enlarged in the 16th century. It was damaged by the 1755 earthquake and restored in 1874 and 1903. It brings tears to the eyes to see places as beautiful as these abandoned and nearly destroyed.
We spend here an entire afternoon just enjoying the nature on a perfect spring day and we cannot believe anyone would leave such a beautiful place. It was a very windy day so we tried our small kite and had a lot of fun with it, I think even more than our son.
Safira was once a thriving village that even got to be a parish but then people started to leave in the mid-1930's searching for better living conditions and now it's nothing more than an abandoned pile of rocks and debris. Many years after the last person left this place is a reminder that things are but a moment in time and everything eventually fades away, on the bright side it's also beautiful to look at nature taking over what was once ruled by man.
It's very hard to know exactly what happened to this place as there are not many documents about it but we do know that the church was built in the 15th century and that in the village there was a factory and two mines one of arsenic and one of copper.
To get there you should follow the EN4 sign to Safira between Montemor-o-Novo and Silveiras and continue on that road until it turns into a dirt road.
Or just follow this link for google maps:

You should film it in the summer peak...to show the difference...
I guess we have allot in common! We also love abandoned structures! What an amazing place and great video! It was funny to hear the little guy say "Mãe sai daí, está a começar a partir-se!"
This place is so worth a visit, we are waiting for the weather to improve and revisit, perfect for nature walks. Maybe we’ll leave a cache there for you guys to find
Beautiful video!! So breathtaking!! Nice 👍 history about the village...thanks for sharing!!!
Thanks, we were fascinated by the history and the location
What a beautiful place! Like escaping back to a moment frozen in time
it really is, there is a mystery in the air
What a great place to play. Beautiful video!
Lindo video
Muito obrigado 😊
I have only read the comments so far, but the fact that it was an arsenic mining area gives me pause. I live in Idaho and there are a lot of toxicity problems from old mines. Be careful to check this out if you are looking into this area. Poisoned water and land with arsenic could explain why people left (died?).
indeed there were two mines there one arsenic and one copper. Thats good information for anyone going there. I wonder if thats why it was abandoned...
@@Escapethecouch See my answer above. It was just people moving near work was. Not because of pollution.
Hello friends! Interesting video! Chic nature !!
We are super happy that you liked it
I would buy the church to live in
Wow Beautiful
we think so too. A top location for a small town or even a house.
0:40 if you listen to the background you can hear someone caling "mãe", mãe in inglish mean "Mother"
People are Given freedom in 1974, wishing more and went to France, England the World and just didn't came back Simple, wen you no't Happy you just need to find it, bat was all in there, it's life I now I leave 35 year's ago to see the World all the best for you all.
I have heard different things about this place, from the toxicity of the mines to people leaving to find a better life. Probably the truth is both, thanks for your comment and for watching
Eu sou português e adoro portugal 😁
Eu também :)
Beautiful place and very nicely filmed.
Some questions , I saw flowers on some of the Graves, do you think people are still visiting the cemetery?
Do you think anyone would mind if people would re-populate and rebuild the village?
We are looking for an abandoned place to create a self sufficient community.
It seems such a shame that village has no future other than falling apart.
I hope you will respond to my questions.
Have a lovely 2019.
Greetings, Mike
Hi Mike
I think there are people visiting the cemetery and on Facebook some people did comment that they had family that lived there. I think it would be great to rebuild the village and repopulate would love to visit it if you guys did it. I’m not sure who is the owner or owners but probably best to contact the local municipality
@@Escapethecouch Both my parents were baptised here. My grand mother lived here. The village was abandonned because inhabitants left to the village near the national called Silveiras. I think the last one left in the sixties.
You can visit the grave and ask the municipality the gate keys but you need to have relatives.
What is your accent. I love it. Can we move there & rebuild ?
What is the music you played. Thank you.
Hi, I guess the accent is a Baltic English as I'm Lithuanian :) I'm not sure if you can move there or if any property is for sale, some people here suggested that the mining may be too toxic. As for the music it's from epidemic. Thanks for watching
is the area prone to wildfires?
This area no, the center and north of Portugal are the most problematic areas with fires
