Especially your teardowns and comments on design philosophies about products.. That stuff never taught to me man. And I think my professors spend decades on academic papers but never actually designed a product from top to bottom.. Have no idea about it anyway. That is the gap I see in today’s education system… Most professors are not engineers. That’s why, I want to stress again, your work becomes invaluable.

Yeah.. and good on yuh, great work.... for an Aussie.... (i'm a kiwi). I say one thing though... you've pulled electronics up by it's balls and made it way more accessible (often understandable) for everyone from the hobbyist, the HAM Radio guys 'n gals to the maker and to the designer and that can only be good in my book. Keep it all coming please Dave... (even though you're a bloody Aussie Mate)...

It is due to your enthusiasm and "assurance" that I have developed my own PCBs using EagleCad and Seeed Fusion, and learned to approach troubleshooting as a fun problem to solve instead of a sad failure:) Congratulations on your 1000th video! p.s.- your OpAmp video is invaluable - a perfect example of a proper tutorial!

Yeah. Isn't 125 dB SPL or thereabouts enough to cause permanent damage? The power transmitter outputs 100 to 1000 times that pressure, so I doubt that ultrasonic instead of sonic is going to save your ears. Not because I know much about this, but because 100 to a 1000 times more pressure variation is a LOT.

Single take must be very hard, and the video would have been as good if each segment had been done separately, but I think the format is excellent for the viewer. Without being too rude, it helps keep you brief. Not suitable for all topics obviously, where you need multiple shots and microscopes etc, but pretty good for many of them.

The scopes usually construct sine wave, when you click SINGLE SHOOT, it uses the data from all SINGLE SHOOTs with the same vertical/horizontal scaling, so if you would click SINGLE SHOT more times the sine wave should be less noisy as the wave is constructed.
Now different scopes do different construction so you cannot know for sure, how they are implementing the wave construction.
I do not know how you would measure the noise level of AD, but I know some words you can lookup:
    ENOB, SINAD, SNR
At our university we have made a program for measuring Arduino's ADC ENOB, but we have not learned a lot, because we only rewrote the equations as it was too advanced for our level.

Absolutely fantastic take. Thank you for putting so much effort and passion into EEVblog. It is one of the best online electronic resources and a neat peek into Australia! @SE45CX 7 лет назад

That two npn clamp circuit is a nice one. I've got it to work in LTSpice as well. I've also used the 2n2222. The emitter-base voltage is defined in the BVbe parameter of the transistor model. So I had to set this manually. Actually you need to test for values between 6 and 10V. Because you never know what you gonna get.

The 'Vebo zener' is the reason many experimenters complain that the classic multivibrator doesn't work properly.
If its supply is more than 6v (and it usually is) then the e-b zener effect will short-circuit discharge each capacitor down to 5v or so as the opposite transistor turns on, after which it will discharge more slowly via the base resistor.
Consequences are unstable operating frequency, or when large timing caps are used, intermittent blowing of transistors since on each half-cycle one transistor of the pair gets whacked with a s/c current rammed backwards up its base. (If you'll excuse my attempt at Ozzie terminology)
The solution is to either use a lower supply voltage, or else to add base protection diodes.

Congrats on the 1000. The TV transmitter tour and teardown videos are great. If anyone even dabbles in RF they should definitely spend the time to watch the tour video. It's an awesome display of power. I know the teardowns are a ton of work (and we appreciate them a lot), but would you consider powering on the NEC TR PA?

That transistor/diode clamp circuit - I'm pretty sure I've also seem them used in audio circuits as distortion and/or compression. I'd have to trawl through the collection of stomp box circuits to be positive, but I'm fairly certain .Congrats on 1000 episodes!

Would be interesting to see a reference for that. I've seen transistor BE junctions used as diodes in such circuit, but not avalanche

Just had a bit of scan through some old circuits and couldn't find anything this extreme (doesn't mean it hasn't)! I did find some some back to back transistor/fet configs for distortion and octave circuits and back to back feeding +/- signals into the bases. Might have a play around with it on an opamp feedback circuits and output and hear how it sounds!. A lot of audio circuits use transistors as diodes for clipping signals.

Really good video Dave, congrats on making 1000. That's a lot of work, a lot of commitment. can't believe you didn't choose the Batterizer as the debunk of the century though...I figured you muttered Batterizer in your sleep lol

Congratulations mate! Wanna go for another thousand?
Btw, I believe keithley used transistor clamping in their 236 Source measure unit. (and the 237)

Dave mate, well done on 1000 videos. Your videos have been incredibly helpful to me and have taught me a hell of a lot. The EEVBlog Forum is one hell of an achievement too - bringing people together to help each other learn.
Keep it up man, you're a top bloke.

    Interesting clamp thanks Dave!
There's another clamp that I saw on the forum that I'm using in some production designs now, uses a shunt voltage reference to set the base voltage of a PNP, then if the emitter voltage goes 0.6V about the ref the transistor starts conducting to GND - quickly! ;)

60 khz sound wave based charging? I see they're keen to piss off every cat, dog and other animal capable of hearing into the ultrasonic range no end...
Just imagine what that's like - a really loud high-pitched whine... That's bound to drive anything that can hear it completely nuts...
And for all that, my phone can wirelessly charge at 1.5 watts. Yay!
