- King Malachi Street - more commonly known as Mel Street left us on Oct 21, 1978. His 43rd birthday. Mel only did 2 appearances on national televsion. This performance from THAT GOOD OLE NASHVILLE MUSIC from 1977 is classic. You'll see the now well known Nashville musicians, Mike Johnson on steel, and Lester Earl Singer on guitar behind Mel. NO OWNERSHIP IS IMPLIED.
From what I understand Mel was just perfectly fine and happy when he was touring and performing and away from home. Someone close to him said the problem was when he went home. Now you can pretty much get the picture from there. I am not going to go any further on that because I wasn't there but I can just imagine. Lord how we love us some Mel Street. RUclips is such a blessing to keep real Country Music alive. Folks a person is never really gone as long as someone remembers them. Mel Street lives again on RUclips.

MEL WAS SO WRAPPED UP IN THE CHEATING THEME THAT HE EVEN NAMED HIS BAND "THE BORROWED ANGELS" IN HONOR OF HIS BIG HIT OF THAT TITLE, WHICH WAS VERY AWKWARD AND WEIRD TO HAVE DONE SINCE ALL OF THE BAND MEMBERS ARE MALE, AND THE "ANGEL" IN THE RECORDING WAS A FEMALE HE WAS STEALING FROM ANOTHER MAN, NOT BORROWING, AN ACT THAT IS DONE WITH THE APPROVAL OF THE BORROWEE.

George Jones liked Mel Street a lot. Mel is gone but not forgotten. He had incredible voice and great songs. Much better than what we hear today.
george appeared and sang amazing grace at my fathers funeral, george was in trouble with the law at that time and drinking a lot , so he was in and out without speaking to the family

I recently saw a Statler Brothers Tribute group in Sevierville, TN called American Pride Country. They did a tribute to Mel Street. You dont hear that stuff anymore. Man was it good!!
i dont know this guy, never heard of him before but truth be spoken. The moment he opened up his mouth the moment ve liked him. This is now what i call country music.

What a talent he was. Voice was flawless.
Mel never got the recognition he deserved on radio, but we played the hell out of him on juke boxes in Arkansas and Texas.

I grew up right next to him. I honestly never knew him , but later on when I heard his music, I was so impressed. Shame he had to take his own life. He needed a friend.
He grew up on the road my Daddy lived on, Rosen Camp road. But Dad married and moved to Northern Va in 1938, when Mel was a baby, so i don't know if they ever even met. Unless later on, on some of our many trips back to visit relatives on Garden Creek.
I'm not sure words can adequately describe that voice. Real, heartfelt, and like his hero George Jones, has depth and incredible musical nuance. This is country music, folks.

This was when country music was still country and Mel was one of the best. "Borrowed Angel" is still one of my favorite all time country songs.
The man gave me goosebumps when he sang. He should be in CMHOF.

Mel was ahead of his time. His songs are just are fresh today as when they first got played.
Up in the steep hills of extreme north Missouri, just below the Iowa line, we had crops in the fertile hollows along the creeks. The fields were small and couldn't accommodate large tractors, so as a teenager I did a lot of the fieldwork on a '54 widefront SuperMTA. I'd cultivate weeds in these numerous little 1-2 acre plots all morning long during the summer, then stop and eat a packed lunch in my '67 Ford pickup parked in the shade of a huge cottonwood tree. Turn on KWMT out of Fort Dodge, IA and hear the news, the weather, and the livestock market report. Take a short snooze on the bench seat with my DeKalb gimme cap pulled down over my eyes and wake up to... this song when it was a brand new hit for Mel Street. Talk about a golden summer. Best. One. Ever. This is the life that Mel Street's priceless and timeless music speaks of, to, and for.
Heck yeah, I know all about lunch under a shade tree after a morning on a tractor with AM country music on the transistor radio...
Man what a great and wasted talent. Sure do love the classic real life story tellers like Mel. Real life is what country music use to be. Now we have a phony matrix of percieved reality and a phony commercialized matrix in the songs they call country music today. Can you imagine the great Mel Street and the great George Jones together. Wow !

One of the best song ever Mel was one of the greats and this song realy brings back some good memories for a 50 yr old that loves country music,,,i think they should put this kind of country back on radio
I'm 80 years old and have been country since I was a little boy I cried the day Hank Williams Senior died that's how far back I go in country music Mel Street would have been as famous as Hank today had he lived RIP Mel

I grew up in Bluefield, WV.......well, actually a little community near Bluefield called Brushfork. Mel Street lived no more than150 yards from me for what seems like a couple of years. I also worked with one of his brothers (Harry) at Appalachian Power Co. I will never forget Mel and his time on WHIS TV as he did Country Showcase. Ronnie Cochrane was part of the show along with a few other musicians. May Mel Street rest in peace. David Francisco

Mel is from the area I grew in. In SW VA. I truly like his music. It's sad that he had to leave us so early in life. I miss him.

Back then depression was not understood as an illness like it is now.
I’ve said for a long time the old country stars who drank themselves so hard were undiagnosed major depressive at least. Hank Sr, George Jones, just to list the most well known.
The saddest song writers often drank the most, I believe.
I didn't live too far from Mel in Southwest Virginia back in 1975. First time I heard him sing I said, "This guy is going to be a big star."
It's sad to think this real country music is gone, probably never come back.

My dad grew up on that road, but he was born in 1916, married and moved away in 1938. Of course he always called it Garden Creek, so all of my family seems all my relatives still call it Garden creek.
I didn't even know it was Rowe Va til i was 16, mid 70's. Lol
Mel was one of my favorite classic singers..Good to see Les Singer on lead guitar and Mike Johnson on steel.Two great classic musicians for sure.See these guys on The Country Family Reunion Shows weekly on RFD TV with host Bill Anderson.And let's don't forget keyboard player Dirk Johnson..What a band,the best in Nashville.

The music business is rough. If you don't chart in the top 10.......your really nothing. And this happens with alot of great talent. Also music styles change so quickly. All this can gobble up a person trying so hard in the business. Mel Street should still be alive today.

I went to visit Mel Street's grave in Nashville a couple of weeks ago. It took me two weekend visits to find the grave. I also visited George Jones, & Marty Robbins graves.

I have been really been researching Mel's life,, Carol, in my researching as to just what happened, there wasn't a woman involved at all.This is what I have learned His manager @ the time, stated his sudden fame & being away from his wife & family(he had 4 kids, two of each) overwhelmed to the point that he felt that he couldn't handle it any further. His manager said that he didn't have to die, he could have taken time off, taken a breather from the road & gone on. & The rest is history.....It has taken me forever digging to find this out.

Margie have you read Mel's Biography "Mel Street A Country Legend Gone But Nor Forgotten" by Dennie Schuler Sr. and Larry J. Delp? It is a great source of information on Mel Street.
I googled Mel, so many times, I that they were getting irritated with me. I found his Manager at the time, Jim Prater, his Obituary for the 21st. of October, 1978, there are 2 different links, I have NOT been to his grave site,I want to visit it when I can soon. I joined find a grave, he was very helpful for me. I just received the book in the mail. Carol what got me started on him was seeing the picture of his empty vase, it made me cry. I called the Mortuary,for information regarding if any family members had visited. his grave. Because of the privacy laws, they could not tell me. anything. It has taken me 2 months of digging to find out this much. His manager Jim Prater said he didn't have to die. He did have a brother, & 4 children Jenni, Sherry, David,& Chester ,his wife Betty, whom he married when she was 14, & he 16. I found that a Betty Street, in Grundy, Va, passed away in 2014.
His parents,Alden Edward Street (1914 - 1958) ,Mother Osmond Newton Glenn (1916 - 1995).
I have Mel Street's CD of Greatest Hits and I love it! I play it all the time in the car and when I'm on the computer. He is my favorite. A wonderful voice and gone way too soon.

SO MANY MEMORIES OF MELS MUSIC. IN THE 60''S HE SANG AT THE BLUEFIELD AUDITORIUM ON SATURDAY NITES. EV1 KNEW HE HAD A GREAT COUNTRY VOICE. AND WERE ALL THRILLED FOR HIM WHEN HE RECORDED SOME MAJOR HITS. HAPPY THAT HE SAW HIS DREAM COME TRUE OF SINGING ON THE STAGE OF THE OPRY. NO REAL CLUE ABOUT HIS DEMISE, JUST GREAT MEMORIES OF HIS MUSIC.

Very great artist I always liked country songs that had a bit of the talking mixed in with this singing & another all time classic of his called "Even if I have still your heart" sadly to think how many country artists had died so young he would have had many more hits through the years if he had lived longer.

my father, Mel Street was incredibly talented singer and extremely handsome. a horde of beautiful women were waiting when the bus pulled in at knoxville collesium, i think it was 1975, anyway my dad stood outside and greeted every fan for over two hours, and again after the show . he was very much like Elvis always pursued by women, they often showed up at the house to meet my father , yes mom was extremely jealous during this time and still exihibits some bitterness to this day

The book I have says he was very depressed and sometimes had them stop the bus just so he could go out and walk around by himself. His had a family history of depression. I listened to his CD of Greatest Hits today in my SUV.
