You hit the nail on the head, Jason! I've been spending far too much time trying to make my builds perfect, to the point that it's taking the enjoyment of the hobby out of it for me. I have too many unfinished kits sitting on the shelf of doom as a result.

My worst built kit is still better than the kits I have not built. So much fear of not getting things to a degree of perfection inspired by observing techniques of master modellers led me for so long to not start at all. Fear of failure. Fear of a bad result. So no more weathering, no more photo etch. Nomore after market. Building something, anything, is better than not modelling at all. I wish I had written the Beatles worst ever song, or painted Picasso’s most embarrassing work.

I love your work Jason, and I hope that you continue to post many videos.
I am pushing 70y.o. and took up armour modelling fairly recently. Like a lot of people, I used to build models in my youth and gave it up in my late teens (when I discovered girls I think), but I began watching a few modelling channels on YT, and thought I would build something with my young grandson. After initial interest, he went off to do something with his mates, and I finished a fairly cheap to buy Tamiya Bulldog on my own. Of course I caught the bug, and I have been building armour models ever since.
I watch a lot of modelling channels, and I am continually amazed at the skill and dedication of the some of the best modellers that I have ever seen.
I will never reach that level of skill, but I build to my own skills and enjoy every hour I spend putting something together that will give me pleasure in job as well done as I can manage.
Let’s face it, for most of us it is just an enjoyable hobby; and it should be enjoyable, not a completion. My models satisfy me, and for me, that is the main reason I build models in the first place.
My point is - you make a lot of sense with your comments.
Cheers from an old, but happy modeller.

I've noticed this year I've become less of a modeler of model kits and more of just a collector of kits.

My modeling life has almost come full circle. Started with basic OOB builds/paint jobs in the 70's and finished about one kit per week. Became increasingly obsessed with detailing and accuracy over the next 35 years, to the point that the stash grew larger while nothing got done, and I seriously questioned my sanity. Have stopped striving for perfection and now build what I want, when I want...much more relaxing.

I;ve re entered modelling after decades plus , who still has the modelling style in my head from literally as a kid in early 60,s , so it,s a massive learning curve , new ideas , new little spray gun , little belief in my self , struggling with source material ....this where I'll be for a long time to come.

I have just stumbled on your channel. Have no real interest in building kits but find the whole process fascinating and love the way you present it.
It's a wonderful insight into a fascinating world that I don't have room for

I watched most of your videos and I can honestly say you were one of the people that inspired me to get back into modelling, after a 40 year break. I like your common sense approach and like you say sometimes we have to remind ourselves it's a hobby and to keep things in perspective.
I'm doing my first tank ever, the infamous Tamiya Leopard 1, but its good for practising techniques.
I have a few other older kids lined up to do next and just bought the 2021 Tamiya Panzerkampfwagen IV. The level of detail is astounding compared to the old kits... although you still only get a piece of string for a tow cable.
    Best of luck 👍

Some great points you mentioned here, everyone will be different, but its good to stop and ask yourself why am i doing this as its easy to lose sight of the simple pleasure of building a kit. Keep up the great work, love the content....cheers 👍

Many things well said, Jason.....totally agree with your sentiments re modelling....it is a hobby and should be fun and not beholding to the whims of others and their points of view. The work you share with us is what keeps us coming back and that's the most important thing regardless of how often. Looks like a lot of great stuff in the offing so will be looking forward to that notification in the future.

Did airfix just put old academy kits out without checking that details were correct , I was hoping they do a cromwell with a driver's hatch same as the machine gunner side , I,m building up courage to scratch build it on the tamiya kit changing the drivers hatch, glad i didn't waste money on airfix cheers

Great to see a video from you. Looks like you got a bit too much sun this week! I didn't know that could happen to Brits! 😉😀😁😂
That's a great selection of kits! Of course, I will have to watch your build of the ME 109 G, etc while constantly reminding myself that I have only just begun to re-establish my skills in armour modelling! lol. 😂
Also, IMHO & FWIW, I don't think you should ever feel that you have to explain, or apologize for, your love of Luftwaffe planes, or for pointing out ridiculous errors made by manufacturers of models. Regarding the latter, it totally blows my mind that a company that sells a product that appeals to the consumer because it's historically-based & technologically-significant would tolerate such glaring errors. And this is not a problem limited to Airfix...even Dragon, Tamiya, and other popular kitmakers have a lengthy list of embarrassing errors, and it makes me wonder who works for these companies & whether or not any of their employees have any interest in current & past AFVs, softskin vehicles, planes, and so on. Do they not send out test samples to experienced builders & experts before going into mass production? Evidently not! 🙄🙄🙄 (rant over...lol 😁 )
Finally, I can't resist suggesting that if your sweetheart watched your video, her first thought likely was, "Yes indeed, 'girlfriend' is getting old....how about 'WIFE'?". 😉😀😁😂
Take care & stay healthy! 😊

I totally feel the same about perfection in modeling. I have actually stopped looking a lot of channels because they are just insane and make me feel inferior.
I like channels by more "average" modellers who just bang out models with a bit of of weathering or one or two resin details.

Insightful stuff JC and if I agree totally. I too started off with the mantra of no rivet counting but like yourself I found myself measuring my own skill set against my online heroes - end result is you feel that need to match their output and produce competition material instead of relaxing and obtaining that skill set at your own pace. In short I've found myself not enjoying the process (yet remaining obsessed and purchasing at a rate of knots), getting so far and then inevitably losing the desire to complete a kit because it was'nt 'up to scratch' (pun intended). The good news is that this vlog has helped me reasses the situation so thank you for provoking positive action today. I started a new armour kit this afternoon and I'm sticking to what's in the box for this one - here's to a new beginning eh 👍 Brilliant stuff Jason.

I got into armour modelling during lockdown to do something that wasn’t staring at a screen, I happened upon your channel when looking to get into it and came upon your Beginner’s Guide playlist. Been building along since and am absolutely loving it. Shame to hear the series won’t continue but it’s certainly given me what feels like a very good basis to carry on and get deeper into the hobby. Thanks for the effort that went into them!

I definitely get you about watching channels for hobbies you don't pursue. I have several wood turners in my sub list, and no plans to get a lathe. Same with blacksmithing, though I'm a smidgen more likely to try that.
I think there's definitely a place for videos about building a kit to a more common standard. Still very interesting, and educational for a relative noob like myself.

i have a collector mentality. buy much more than have time to build. not so bad i guess. since 20 years after they are worth selling if i don't want to build. do anything from enjoyment. it is not a job

  • @allanrichards6448

A hobby, to me, is done for enjoyment. If you set yourself too many goals or deadlines in your hobby then it can become a chore and the enjoyment will decline. I do believe though that pushing oneself to do your hobby to a higher level is also rewarding. Failures are all part of the learning curve and I have chucked stuff in the bin but when you exceed your expectations it is just so rewarding.
I guess Airfix subbed out the design and build of that Cromwell but why they accepted the kit with such a major error is a bit beyond belief. it will be ok for beginner modelers who are not into scale but anyone who has developed a bit will have to correct those defects or not buy the kit, so they have likely lost half the market for it. £15 extra for wheels is a lot compared to the price of the kit. I am sure you can buy plastic rivet heads and bolt heads.

Airfix are living in the past. They think its ok to send kits out full of defects. 20 - 30 yrs ago there was little choice so you had to buy AF but thats not the case and AF kits are not cheap now. Every new AF kit that as been well designed with good detail suffers from moulding issues and horrendous QC. i will not buy ANY of their kits the new stuff OR the terrible old kits with poor detail AND ALSO SUFFER from moulding issues. They spend peanuts on the moulding side, cheap plastic and shite factories or machines.
