    Ragnar was baptised in Paris to achieve his goal of sacking the city. Bjorne was there why not now be baptised to stay alive.

      He did as a plan of invasion, not for survival, and the difference is that Ragnar didn't mean it nor follow the Christian traditions afterwards. Torvi and Ubbe fully converted

      Ragnar did it by choice, that Bjorn knew his baptism ultimately benefitted the Vikings. Who does Ubbe's baptism benefit? I think Bjorn rather saw it as a cost to pay for survival.

    Given that the historical Bjorn Ironside also converted to Christianity and tried to get an audience with the Pope (who paid him to go away) this show will end with all the heathens either converted or dead. Iceland was the last Viking country to officially become Christian in 1000 AD.

    • @Surtur99

      Wrong Sweden was the last to be converted.

    • @sarahgray430
      @sarahgray430 5 лет назад +19

      @@Surtur99 Sweden was officially Christianized before Iceland but they allowed the older traditions to persist largely unmolested for centuries (the neopagan idea of the "Burning Times" is a myth because the Protestant Church that took over in the 1500s never had an official organization devoted to stamping out "witches"). The only official campaign against older traditions was committed by the Swedish government in the 19th century against the Sami people, who are technically speaking NOT Swedes!

    • @DrEgonCholakian
      @DrEgonCholakian 5 лет назад

      Christianity never really converted Scandinavia really it synthesized with it more than anything and spawned something later popes would have considered a heresy but due to its relative isolation no one ever really cared enough to look into it

    • @sarahgray430
      @sarahgray430 5 лет назад +1

      @@DrEgonCholakian Ya got that right...remnants of earlier traditions persisted in some parts of Europe (particularly among the Sami people of the most northern parts of Norway, Sweden and Finland) They were not actively persecuted by the Protestant Church (the Inquisition that most neopagans claim was responsible for the "Burning Times" was of course a purely Catholic phenomenon and mostly persecuted Jews and heretics not "pagans") and the most active persecutions of the Sami were undertaken by the Swedish government in the 19th century and the Soviets and Nazis in the early 20th century. Not only that but the traditions of the Sami people are completely different from what the Asatru and other modern neopagan groups usually ascribe to prechristian Northern Europe...I keep telling people these things but they simply don't want to believe me!

      All that is true. Both Judith and Ecbert had hopes and dreams he would become king. It was something he was raised to believe in, Ecbert trained him, paid special attention to him. And yes, warned him about the reality, the burdens of ruling. Most of us will never understand, it is a double edged sword. In theory it is a wonderful thing, but living in it can be positively draining.

      If he is a Catholic he is praying to God and want's Ecbert who being saved though Christ and became a Saint so he can add The power of his prayer to his and make more likely that God grants his request. It is called intercession of the Saints and he isn't praying to Ecbert although in this show it is shown as he was speaking to him, simultaneously praying to subconsciously reinforce stereotype of idolatry
