  • FM20’s mysterious journey into the hidden world of player traits. It took me years to get up the confidence and energy to really learn how to use them, train them, and build them into my tactic, so this video’s goal is to give you everything you need at a whirlwind pace.
    I cover every single player trait in the game: what attributes are required, what roles they fit, and what to expect from training them onto players. Football Manager has so many facets I always believe giving yourself the edge in each one is the key to winning. This player traits guide, the one I never had, can hopefully make that difference for you.

    Another useful tip for player traits, especially for younger players, is to have them mentored by players who already have the trait. In my experiences, mentoring accelerates the process of learning new traits. However, be mindful that the mentors may also pass on traits that you may not want on a young player.
    There's no way to be selective about which traits are passed on through mentoring, but if your young player is also training to learn the trait, then they'll be more inclined to learn the trait you want from their mentor.

    In my Levante save, one of my team leaders had "tries tricks," and he passed it to the entire mentor group. (Rochina, I believe, had it.)
    Basically it shows up as players "ghosting" defenders when they dribble more often. You don't see any fancy Ronaldo step-overs. But they do seem more likely to either beat defenders clean, or draw rash challenges. It's not a trait I would actively train. But if you have someone in your squad who does this, it seems easier than one would think to get it in mentoring.

      I know this is super old, but I had one player with this trait (he also had obviously high dribbling but also very high flair). He was really good at one on ones but more important he was responsible for sending off players because of red cards like non stop, lmao.

    Try to go around keeper in one on one, tries long range free kicks and tries to play one-twos are my favorite traits in this version of FM. Trying to round keeper improves goalscoring in Advanced Forwards by a lot, long range free kicks are a thing of beauty if you have the right player and one-twos are very good with more attacking midfield roles like Mezzala-A.

    Bro, easy 'American' explanation for the 1-2... which I didn't know until you tried to explain it. Basketball is now a pretty universal sport... so a 1-2 is the concept of the Give and Go.
    I pass to you (I give), I break to the goal (I go), you pass it back to me.
    And for Euro, where Big Men are astoundingly good passes, this concept travels well. Because Europeans have been keen on Give and Go since Vlade Divac days.

    What happens when a trait is in conflict with a condition of a role? Examples: My CM has a trait of gets forward when possible but I want to play him as a DLP which has holds position. Also a STC has a trait of plays with back to goal but I wish to play him as an AF which has gets forward. In both cases, the DLP and AF are their best and preferred position. Does the trait override the role’s condition? Or vice versa?

    Fine vid, but i felt like it was mostly just explaining what a trait does.. but what about the more advanced stuff? Like how does it function vs a player role and player instructions?
    Take long passes.. Seems like its way more flexible to have no traits on any player and control how long/direct their passes are via the shot/direct passing wheel on the player instructions. Why would i ever want a static trait when i can configure it flexibly via tactics?

    I always thought that sliding into tackles suits players who DON'T have good strength. I mean, if you're doing a challenge standing up, you need strength to bump the player off the ball, but if you make a slide tackle, you don't need strength, just good timing (tackling, anticipation, bravery). When I used to play football IRL I did a ton of slide tackles and I was and still am far from a big or a powerful guy.

    I've always been wondering what exactly "current ability" is.
    I mean, beside the stars I remember checking the exact value on tools like FM Scout. What I've never understood is what that value actually represents since it could be edited independently from the others.
    A player with 20 dribbling, composure and finishing but low CA is still going to be good at dribbling and scoring?

    • @kiweping5
      @kiweping5 3 года назад

      Yes, current ability is pretty much the summary of all stats combined (unless I’m much mistaken) if he has high stats in dribbling, composure and finishing but low CA it’s because he has weak other stats.

      Traits DO add to the Current Ability (CA) value (as do positions a player can play in f.e.), but they don't lessen the Potential Ability (PA) value (injury prone players might have their PA reduced over time and many injuries, but I'm not 100% sure about that).
      So especially in lower leagues be careful with traits (and additional positions).
      Ever wondered why your 5* potential player with multiple traits and multiple positions playable has much worse attributes than your 3* one-trick-pony? That's why.

  • @TheSilentScreamX
    @TheSilentScreamX 4 года назад +1

    I almost never bother with traits, because it seems like the tactic you're playing takes care of the same things. Like if I'm playing an inside forward, he's going to cut inside whether he has the trait for it or not, so what's the point of the trait? Same with wingers, they always hug the touchline and run with the ball. The only thing traits do in my experience is mess up tactics when a player has a contradictory trait to what the tactic is telling him to do.

    For "Dives into Tackles" the player needs to read the game well. But it checks the Teamwork skill. Am I wrong or is this stupid?

    • @lzl4226
      @lzl4226 3 года назад

      Mostly tacking and decision making, no teamwork needed. If an opposition player is fast and is about to dribble past you, you can counter that by slide tackling. You obviously don't want to be the last man because if you miss it'll be one on one, and I don't think the game counts how may team mates are behind you, they'll just do it if they think they can succeed. You also don't want to get carded or give away a penalty. So giving it to a defender is definitely risky, plus they already do it anyway when they see fit, so just leave it to them. Midfielders and attackers will usually just let the player through if they can't keep up, so giving it to them increases your defensive aggression higher up, but then again beware of cards. Also I've seen midfielders plenty of times being the last man and have dive into tackles, because I tell them to stay back during free kicks, so they will happily tackle.... and miss.... sometimes, it's actually a little annoying but they do succeed a lot too. My full backs are too slow so I still use it.
