Rick and the old man always have problems with no REAL authentication. They know it's going to be a tough sell unless the buyer want to self investigate like that magician.
"It's in rough shape and needs repairs" 100% correct since that is one of the reasons that this jacket is so special and deserving of way more than what rick offered.
Anyone else so happy that the guy chose to walk away? Got the official authentication on Pawn Stars and then walks away to sell it for a higher price. GOT EM
Damien Airalay yep! Rick just wanted something of such authenticity on the cheap, turn it around and sell it for 3-4 times the amount. The guy was very wise to keep it. He could easily get at least $50k for it.
Rick: goes to mcdonalds reception: that'll be 2$ for the burger Rick: best I can do is 1.25$ reception: sorry man it's 2$ Rick: you know man, let me call in my buddy in, he knows a lot about burgers.
I hate the low ball offers . I realize they have to make money but they go so low in valuable items it’s rediculos . I enjoy watching people walk away then as they walk he throws an offer close to what they want … and they still keep walking away.
Seller: “Hello, I’d like to sell my Pawn Shop.” Rick: “I don’t know anything about pawn shops, I have a buddy that works right down the hall in the other room that knows all about pawn shops though.”
diamonds really don't hold their value out of the store you purchased them at, you buy them at an exorbitant markup, so that's actually a realistic price once you factor in the fact that once they buy it, they then need to sell it at a higher cost in order to make any money
Kidnapper: I have your son and I’m holding him for ransom, I want 25k. Rick: I can do 20 and I’m taking a big risk here Kidnapper: But it’s your son?!? Rick: the first rule of negotiating is learn to walk away if the price isn’t right.
Rick...you had a deal at $30,000....We can't believe you didn't budge on YOUR PRICE! This was Harry Houdini! You could have sold it to any major magician, the magic castle or a museum....Money was there to be made!
I was thinking the exact same thing. They are in Vegas. You probably could've called up all the top magicians in the area and someone would jump on that in a heartbeat. So for him to pass on buying it at $30k, seemed crazy.
Exactly the guy said he seen those jackets go for 30-40k but never one like that matched to that picture even the expert was amazed it care off Houdini back and was from that picture
Do you know what a pawn shop is? They arent ever going to pay the retail price. Pawn shops buy and sell items. If you arent making a profit on your items, you arent going to stay open. You clearly must be 11 years old.
Rick claimed the guy wouldn't budge on his price, but he did. He went from $100,000 asking price all the way down to $30,000. Rick was the one that wouldn't budge once he hit 25K. I think this one was Rick's loss. An original Houdini straight jacket would be like a holy grail to a Houdini collector. To the right collector or museum, I think it could be worth alot more than that 34 to 42 K estimate. I was amazed that Rick let this one walk out of his shop.
RJ Walker it was a borderline decision and they both made the right decision. We now know it sold for $47,000 but you don’t run a business with time machines. I’d say Rick was about 45% right and the seller was 55% in the right. In the end Rick screwed up but also didn’t lose either. He’ll keep making money with chopped up gold sold at 5pts under market to him and reselling when the market swings and gives him another point or two.
Guy tries to sell the actual key that benjamin franklin had attached to the kite that founded electricity sells for about $15 mil Pawn stars: ehh idk looks like it would sell for around 2,500 Guy trying to sell it: idk I mean this is a major artifact of history I need at least 2 mil Pawn stars: I tell you what, 50,000 no more than that Guy trying to sell: you know what, I think I’ll hold on to it. Pawn stars: Man I really would’ve loved to have that.
Love how Rick was basically like "I could give you chewed gum some pocket lint and a dirty nickel" for an *authenticated Harry Houdini straight jacket*
"It's in really rough shape"... Cause it needs to look brand new for something that's almost 100 years old and has been used as a stage prop? Of course it's going to be in rough shape, that's what makes it authentic.

Nah. not really Jim. What the article doesn't mention is how big of a cut Christie's auction takes. They are known for taking out HUGE cuts. sometimes as high as 30%. So after all is said and done, the guy probably ended up pocketing around the same money that Rick offered him. Had he just took the money and went about his day, he also would've saved himself all the headache of dealing with a live auction.
Rick: “How much are one of theses worth?” Like there’s hundreds of theses straight jackets (the thing that made Houdini famous) out there. Blows my mind... that’s a one of a kind piece.
themonkeyhand yup for sure. Penn & Teller would give Rick $35,000 tomorrow and David Copperfield has an absolutely massive Houdini collection and owns a God-Damned island he would seriously consider the asking price of $100,000 if he doesn’t already own a jacket but I imagine would cover Rick’s expenses and throw in another $10,000 as a finders fee.
Nah. The guy actually put the straight jacket on Ebay twice after this show. He listed it for around $129k. Nobody was even remotely interested in that price range. He then ended up listing it an a high end auction (Christy's) and it sold for $47k.. After all the auction fees, processing fees, listing fees, and Christy taking a cut.. he probably got about the same amount of money that Rick offered him.
M - he did try selling it on Ebay. Twice actually. nobody bought. He then tried selling it at a high end physical auction. It sold for $47k. After all the fees and charges. He probably got the same (if not less) amount of money that Rick offered him.

Rick: *lowballs guy*
