David Malouf is a favourite author of mine and Remembering Babylon was the first of his novels that I read - after that I read everything by him! So you can probably guess that he got my vote in 93 and he won the Dublin award that year. The lack of women on the shortlists of the early 90s is what kick started the Orange Prize in 96, now known as the Women’s Prize. So that might be viewed as a silver lining.
Yes! I’m intrigued to read more of his- Remembering Babylon felt like such an interesting approach to narrative. And yes! Definitely a good silver lining!
I have 3 on my shelves, Roddy Doyle's, Carol Shield's and David Malouf's. I started Malouf's a while ago but was distracted must get back to them. I think all 3 are on the 1001 list to read b4 you die, another list I occasionally follow. No surprise that there are a lot of Booker books on the 1001 list. Found it really interesting listening to your thoughts on all the books. Thanks for taking us along on your project.
Ooh nice! And yes! I keep on being tempted to do the 1001 but I might have a break for a bit after the Booker! (Although yes, luckily a lot of Booker ones are on that list!)
What a fascinating Booker year! Loved this video and thank you for reminding me to get to The Stone Diaries and Scar Tissue, both on my shelf. Merry Christmas Bob!
The Stone Diaries is a book I read and didn't particularly love when I was about 20. I'm eager to reread it because I'm pretty sure I would appreciate it a lot more now. I hadn't realized it was a Booker finalist, which is very funny because it won the Pulitzer--and in a time when it wasn't supposed to be possible to do both!
Oh yes! I wonder when we’ll get a book finally doing the double! And I think it’s a book that might improve a bit with age, just because of its slightly wistful tone.
I’m looking forward to reading The Stone Diaries in the future. I thought it was a treasure noe after hearing you talk about it I’m sure it will be. Her short stories are good as well.
Roddy Doyle is a favourite writer of mine. Have you read the Barrytown triology? The Snapper/ The Commitments/The Van? All adapted into film. The Woman Who Walked Into Doors/ Paula…adapted for television. I’m still reading The Stone Diaries. I will eventually finish the book. Pity there isn’t audio option.
Ah lovely! I’m so keen to read more of his! I’ve not read the Barrytown trilogy but it sounds great! (The Van was shortlisted, so I’m definitely reading that, but I’m intrigued by the idea of reading the entire trilogy. And yes- I know, I feel like I’d have liked the audio of The Stone Diaries but it’s a powerful book regardless, I think!
@@BobTheBookerer The Barrytown Trilogy was one of my earliest forays into grown-up literary fiction. I picked up a one-volume hardback in some long forgotten shop on Camden High Street in the early 90s. Properly funny and beautifully observed. Doyle earned years of goodwill from those books and Paddy Clarke.
Taking a moment to digest the fact that 1993 was 30 years ago 😅 I guess I feel like it's 2013 now rather than 2023, because what even are the past ten years 😵💫We've had enough upheaval that I'm not sure I can tackle this shortlist. Have to say, Stone Diaries is the only one I've heard of besides the winner, so a bit of vindication there for the lone woman on the list. (Or goes to show what it took for a woman to be shortlisted. Yeah, not keen to revisit the 90s 😂). Love these videos though, hope you keep them up next year. I'm especially looking forward to 1984.
Oh gosh, tell me about it 😂 And yes, Stone Diaries was a beautiful read and she feels like an author who I will eventually read all of! I think I did 1984 a couple of years ago- my first few years of videos were a bit more random on Booker years!
@@BobTheBookerer I have scrolled forever trying to find that 1984 video now ( *slumping dramatically over keyboard* ) You've made a lot of videos! I'd like to encourage you to organise them into playlists, or at least a Booker list vs other content. 😆
We do, we definitely do like these videos!! Please keep them coming! 😆
Ahh, thank you so much! They’re really fun for me, and I’m still surprised such a niche is enjoyed like this! I feel very lucky! :)

Love the concept of going back in time with the Booker prizes and great commentary / reviews on the shortlist books. Bravo
Thank you so much! It’s really fun for me too (for the most part!)

It’s quite the year! And I hope you enjoy them! Merry Christmas!
I really like these videos. So many interesting books, so many forgotten ones too, rightfully so or not.
Thank you so much! I have a lot of fun doing them!
Thanks Bob!
Thank you!

Ooh, enjoy! And I hadn’t realised she did short stories too! I feel like she’d be fantastic at those!
I always find your Booker videos really interesting! (My whole book club DNF'd The Stone Diaries but I think that says more about us than the book 😂)
Thank you! Aha, totally fair- it’s quite a slow starter, I think, so I totally get that! Her book ‘Unless’ is especially good, I think.
@@BobTheBookerer thanks for the recommendation!

@@TheLeniverse Oh sorry! I made a Booker playlist, but I need to spend some time reorganizing it into proper order! Sorry about that!
@@BobTheBookerer I actually just realised that you do have a 1980s Booker playlist too, containing that one video 😂 Too many playlists confused me.
