Hey thanks for all your videos. They are great! I'm a 37yo beach lifeguard in San Diego, with a business college degree (I quit my desk job to do something I like more) and waiting for MEPS/Asvab date. I have a wife and 9 month old daughter. Life is good! But my job is summers only, so I want to join USCG reserves as a BM (going on AD periods when possible) to learn all about seamanship and for the benefits. I'm torn between sticking to my current plan, or pressing the reset button and going Active Duty and having the full experience, full benefits, and forgetting about juggling jobs and looking for jobs every lifeguarding off season.
This issue about advancement potential comes up a lot in discussions about the Coast Guard. Because it's such a small service there is very little opportunity for advancement at the higher ranks. You generally have to wait for a senior person to retire before an opening becomes available, regardless of your abilities. In the larger services with hundreds of thousands of personnel there are vastly more opportunities for promotions at the higher ranks. Unfortunately, I think the Coast Guard loses a LOT of excellent leaders due to these staffing and financial constraints.
Hello. Thank you for your input. Personally, I have seen members move up the ranks quicker than AD. It of course depends on the rate you choose and the members’s motivation. Recruiters are actually enlisting members now at advanced pay grades as a lateral entry. I recently enlisted a new enlistee as an ME1. It is all subjective to how quickly you work on those sign offs and sit for the advancement test. It is possible!
You have been such an inspiration to me. I've been watching your videos for a year, off and on. I am enrolled in my local community college this fall semester, and my date for MEPS was the 16th of September. I want my rate to be an MK, and I hope they will need help in that department. I only scored a 70 on the ASVAB, so I may have to retake the test in a month. I planned to attend Basic in mid-January because school gets out in mid-December. I want to go to college and get my education and experience there. A-School could be via the RK Split program right after or during the summer. Thinking of 4 years Reserve and 2 years active contract. I could potentially go the Officer Route if I get my degree after transferring to a university. I’m currently a freshman, and I’m 19 years old! Knowing you were in the same spot as a Reversist and in College gives me hope and encouragement! Do you have any thoughts or more encouraging words? :)

Very true and good points! I definitely ran into a lot of “needing people to retire” as I moved up in ranks.

@Coastie2RN are you a recruiter? I'd love to have you on the channel sometime to answer questions if you're interested.

Any interested reserve applicants here in the Florida/ Georgia area?
You wish you were taken by Bid Daddy Navy, but you'll only ever be a Puddle Pirate! You guys do great work.
I’m a concrete finisher with a CDL interested in the Coast Guard reserves. Is there a job in the reserves that would use my experience?
You would actually be better off with the Army Reserves.
