“Shum” ( “Forest” or "Forest spirit" in an old Ukrainian tradition) became an official Eurovision 2021 entry by Go_A band. Originally an old ceremonial Ukrainian folk song it is dedicated to the rebirth of nature after a winter sleep and arrival of Spring. According to the band members “Shum” also symbolizes their hopes for return to a normal life after a global anabasis caused by the pandemic.

Go_A - ""Shum" (English translation):
[Verse 1]
"Spring song oh Spring song, where have you spent your Winter?
In the garden, sitting on a maple tree, I been spinning a shirt
There on the edge of a forest an owl is blowing into the water
I'll sing a song - let her hear it
[Chorus]
Shum, get twined with periwinkle
I'm singing the spring song to you
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing hemp plants
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing green ones
[Verse 2]
Come Spring, come, don't wait around
We'll go outside to love each other
Oh Spring, our miss, look in our window
We had sang our song and the sun shined on
[Chorus]
Come on, come on, let's twine the Shum
Twinе the Shum, dance it around
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing hemp plants
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing green onеs
Shum, get twined, get twined!
Shum, get spread with periwinkle
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing hemp plants
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing green ones
[Bridge]
Oh Spring song, Spring song, where have you spent your Winter?
In the garden, sitting on a maple tree, you've been spinning a shirt
There on the edge of a forest an owl is blowing into the water
I'll sing a song - let her hear it
[Chorus]
Shum, get twined with periwinkle
I'm singing the spring song to you
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing hemp plants
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing green ones
Come on, come on, we've made some noise
Made some noise and awoke the Spring
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing hemp plants
Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing green ones

I can relate!
I will tell you exactly how I felt when I first heard the track. Shock, awe, joy, dark anticipation, energy, inspiration and at the end exhaustion. I have never in my 50 years been hit by any track as much as I have by this. Every version, every video, every visualisation, Every design concept, the entire production is perfection from start to finish and complements exquisite vocals , that would not have worked in anything other that the mother tongue. The message is of the moment. I watch the reaction videos to see a reflection of my own reactions. I can't stop watching the videos and performance because I am entranced. And literally every single time I watch the song, no matter the version, I get wave after wave of goosebumps all over my body. This track is stunning. I can only hope the world makes SHUM and Go A receive the global success they deserve.
This is just fantastic experience I am glad you got to enjoy Ukrainian cultural product, it means a lot to us knowing that our culture is appreciated abroad as well. You are absolutely right, they are a fresh breath for the entire mainstream music world and their performance was really well thought of and artistically directed. For us the victory is less important compared to the level of exposure they got and potential for growth and sharing our culture. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and thoughts, it is much appreciated! 💙💛

Solovey is pure masterpiece. I love Shum but Solovey is still my favorite song by this amazing band. Ukraine also has Kazka, Onuka, MamaRika, Yuko and my favorite artist ILLARIA - they all use ethnic motives and mix them with other genres. Go_A does it specially well. Luckily we have this recorded by STB TV. Thank you for sharing your favourite bands I know most of them, they are amazing and people should check them out. Go_A was among the first bands 8 years ago in Ukraine to mix ethno-folk with electro music. I think Katya mention this in some of her interviews. I’m Ukrainian and my first reaction to Go_A and their first Eurovision song was kinda “well... it’s weird”. Not good, not bad but weird. It wasn’t similar to anything I’ve heard before, so I didn't know how to react. But I decided to give “Solovey” one more try and I liked it!
The thing is that you have to listen to Go_A at least two-three times to catch the vibe. Their music is too different from what we are used to, so many people don’t understand them from the first listening. They are just not used to such a specific singing manner like Katya’s and the genre overall. That’s why the band also has many haters who don’t see their uniqueness. People tend to hate what they don't understand.
Interesting observation, thank you for sharing it. Go_A incorporates folklore music and singing style, so for those people unfamiliar with Ukrainian folklore culture it might seem hard to understand. he best way to tackle this is to get educated on Ukrainian cultural heritage and history. I could recommend watching ""Тіні Забутих Предків" (С. Параджанова), for starters. It is even recommended by Harward University to all the graduate students.
i agree, you have to learn to like solovey. but Katharina has a way of singing that is unique and special and of a high quality .. so it will stay in your head and heart
@@MichaelSpengler Authentic Ukrainian folklore vocals is a special type of music. Happy that Ukraine was able to present it to the international audience. We have lots of things international community can enjoy and learn about Ukraine. Go_A is a great gateway! Regards to Ukraine! :)

0:05 The irony is the Ukrainian and Belarusian are the only Slavic languages I know that have the different words for "language" and "tongue": "mova" ("speeking") and "yazyk" ("tongue"). In Polish, Slovak, Russian etc. the word "jazyk/język/yazyk" is the same for both "language" and "tongue".
Another fun fact - Ukrainian is the only language I know were the word "human" is feminine ("lyudyna"). To give you an idea - it's singular from people ("lyudy"), so in English it would sound like "peopa" or something. :)

I really sad because I can't undersand all in the interviews and social networks, also sad because they didn't win this year.... such a good music and style combinations 😥❤ If they in the future decide to expand their music with international things (english lyrics for example), I predict that they will could become world popular, because I've been heard somewhere that Kate definitely sing on english and in other styles very well except folk, (maybe writing text could be a little problem)...but hey, for the begining, it is important that people recognize them and their style...
As she told at the end of documentary, if they doesn't win, she might have to do maybe metal haha 😂😂 (just a joke)...
All in all, here in Serbia we love their music, because we have a similar traditional opus, style, lyrics and folklore... (slavic people hehe 😅)
We would definitely like to see them at our most popular festival - "EXIT" in Novi Sad... 😁😃
They are always welcome in Serbia and all Ukrainian people also !!! ❤❤❤

Much love to our brothers and sisters in Serbia❤️ it might be a bit complex to sing Ukrainian folk songs in English, that would be a real experiement, but guys are quite creative, so you never know 😎👌🏻 Partially because there is not much info about the band in English, I decided to make this short introduction of the band video and hopefully help more people to understand their background. Go_a unique by the nature of their material and actual ethnographic expertise. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and experience, much appreciated ❤️☺️
I don't know, maybe she could do metal! (Taras mentioned somewhere that she also has the vocal technique to 'scream', and they were all in rock bands before) I was thinking that there should be some kind of an international Go-a website, that collects translations of the song lyrics and interviews.. and maybe bits and pieces of Ukrainian culture too!
@@juuliq6 Kuulusta hyvältä, Juuli, se on hienoa idea! They all have background in rock music, and it also shows in their music arrangements. This has been super useful, thank you so much! Go_A really did a wonderful impression here in Italy, I voted for them and Finland!
My top three were Måneskin, Go_A and Blind Channel, that’s what I appreciate the most, personality, attitude, uniqueness, loved them over all 🇮🇹🇺🇦🇫🇮

COOL!
Thank you!
Thank you for this amazing introduction. Her performance really impressed me and made me proud. I didn't know we had one more talented band here in Ukraine until I saw an article about Eurovision 2021 in my news feed. Before that, my favorite one was 'Odyn v kanoe'. I noticed that Ukrainian music has certain authenticity and charm that touches the very strings of my soul.
This is wonderful , I am glad to hear you rediscovered your interest towards Ukrainian music in this way. There are so many talented artists and musicians out there, it's just sometimes they lack proper marketing. Go_a made a really great job in attracting attention of international but also Ukrainian audience to the authentic musical culture. Big shout out to them and thank you for taking the time to share your story, appreciate it! P. S. "Один в каноє" is also one of the favorite bands of Kateryna Pavlenko.

@@ALMStudios You are welcome! ..however, the first time I heard Shum and Kateryna's voice I was mesmerized, you could hear all the Ukrainian culture in this incredible techno / folk song, not for nothing I, like thousands of Italians, have given 12 points to televoting,I think we all had the same emotions inside!❤️
@@RedTrance This is very nice to hear, glad that you were able to connect with the authentic Ukrainian music. Hitting hearts is what it is about and there is no larger victory for musicians than this❤️

I fell sooooooo in love with Go_A 😍❤️
Happy to hear! They are easy to fall in love with❤️
Not only has their music been an amazing discovery since last year, their dedication to sharing their culture on all their social media accounts has felt like an amazing gift for all of us, whether it’s a post about gorgeous embroidered shirts or visiting choral groups or instrument makers in their own towns. They really represent everything eurovision is supposed to be in bringing us all closer together, and reminding us that there is a brighter way ahead for everyone. Ukraine has always shared great songs with us at the contest, but with Go_A more than anyone else it felt like we’ve been invited to visit and share in the joys of those cultural elements that feel so deeply rooted any yet resonate across borders, and I‘m so grateful for it 💙💛
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and your kind words. It is indeed inspiring to see how much positive attention and interest Go_a has received from the international audience. When artists are true it really shows. Appreciate your kind words. Much love from Ukraine 🇺🇦❤️

You prepared well to the subject. Great video!
Greetings from Ukraine....стоп побачив відповіді на коментарі, то ти і так з України?)) Класна англійська вимова, хоча саме класна вимова українських слів і викликала сумнів, шо щось тут не чисто. 😅
Дякую на доброму слові 🙂🇺🇦❤️
2:50 Shum doesnt mean forest, but noise/sound/ruckus.
Tahank you for the comment! "Shuma" in the Ukrainian etimological dictionary is seen in association with forest as of "Shum" (noise) is what you hear when green leaves are shaken by the wind. In day to day modern language it does refer to "noise", indeed, but in the original historical context in which original folklore song "Shum" was established it had connection to the forest and its spiritual WORLD. Appreciate Attention to this detail 🇺🇦🙂👌🏻
@@ALMStudios Yeah, but "narobyli shuma" doenst mean "made a forest" but "made noise". So even in this context its rather noise than forest ;)
@@Schmuni you are right, great observation, indeed 👌🏻🙂 the band also refers to Shum as a forest spirit in their lyrics, so "shum" has multiple meanings throughout the whole song.
@@ALMStudios Somehow you seem to be doubling down. It still doesnt mean forest, even if it is associated with it. It means rustle/noise in every one of the songs instances. But i'll leave you be now.
