I have delivered to rural areas at night & I absolutely 100% do not feel comfortable delivering to customers front doors if it’s too dark or I just plain feel uncomfortable. I didn’t know about the airplane mode, but I just delivered to wherever I felt most comfortable on their property and received a “not delivered to preferred location” from my metric score, but I literally do not care. They’re lucky I’m taking the time to do that, who knows what’s on the other side of that dark; furthermore the customers receive notifications prior to our arrival so if you’re home at least have the decency to turn on an outside light or something! It’s just crazy to me some of these homes & driveways and when we’re out after dark, it’s a whole other ballgame!
Exactly! None of them turned on the lights until I was sitting in the driveway for 30-60 seconds looking to see if it’s safe because it’s so damn dark and wooded in the area I was
My tip for someone who usually get rural areas. As soon as I pull into the driveway. Press (?) txt customer “I’ve arrived” it will prompt the customer to put the dogs inside and turn the lights on. This is only if the customer requests front door delivery. Other then that security gate “another safe location” (airplane mode Bluetooth on) It will circumvent the ping. If it doesn’t work (mobile data off WiFi on) which is basically airplane mode but another way. And always make sure you turn these off after you’ve delivered the package. Because it hides your location to where dispatch can’t see you on cortex so if you do wind up in trouble they won’t know exactly where you are. But always txt I’ve arrived. Country folks don’t like people on their property. This just lets them know who’s coming. They have guns and dogs so it’s best to let them know they’ll be expecting you. And always before you hop out of the van beat on the van door and shout “Amazon” if there are dogs it will get their attention and let you know not to leave the van. Then call the customer have them meet you at the van or mark “undeliverable” no safe place and move on
Literally, my first very rural area was last Saturday and it went pitch black from 6:45-7. I’d typically get done any other route around 5 but these houses were spread out and had land. I didn’t finish my last 15 stops because it was too dark and I didn’t feel safe being that it was the same area a coworker had run into a bear. Nah. God Bless all Amazon delivery drivers but this ain’t for me. I’m going back to IT
I don’t blame you brother-depending on a persons vision, it’s very difficult to see at night. I couldn’t imagine having a run in with a bear…I probably would collapse on sight😂
I've been getting alot of rural lately. I absolutely hate it. Not necessarily because of the dogs but because of the stops being so spaced out. Everyone has dogs at both rural and residential stops. If you stand your ground and don't panick most dogs won't attack. One of the worst things you can do is 🏃♂️. Now I know this is easier said than done but instead of running step back calmly while keeping eyes on the animal
Everyone hates rural areas. I finally finished my step van training. My dsp doesn’t send step vans up the road. I told my dispatch and boss I’ll do 200 stops a day if it means no more rural routes.
@@srm9167 I drive a step van everyday and still get rural routes. I didn't have any rural routes this summer but within the last month I get often. That is actually my biggest complaint with getting rural routes. That step van is so much harder to maneuver in rural areas
As a current Amazon Flex driver soon to be a regular delivery driver… Rural areas are my biggest fear when it comes to dogs! They seem to be at almost each stop and in multiples. I won’t even get off! I did ask at my interview if they provided mace like USPS to their drivers and they said they don’t want any drivers macing dogs 😳 Apparently there was an incident here on a delivery. The driver maced a dog and the owner ended up getting it on himself as well when trying to retrieve the dog. 🤦♀️ There is NO WAY you are going to get a dog to stop charging without mace! Now that an Amazon driver has been mauled I wonder how they’re gonna stand by that rule!?!?
I ran into dogs everywhere while doing amazon flex. I try to tell people as long as you remain calm when you encounter a dog they usually dont bother you. Me personally I like the rural routes because I finish early. If you are amazon flex spoiled like me don't join dsp they get ridiculed over everything
If you are going to buy mace buy one that is specifically for animals because if you buy the standard one you could blind a dog given that there are different chemicals in the standard ones
I buy bear mace. Sorry that sounds terrible I know! Bear mace sprays far and wide unlike the standard straight stream. You miss with that one in a serious situation and it’s a done deal. When I have had to use the bear mace the dogs have stopped dead in their tracks turned and just about said nope not going any closer 😉 I barely pump that trigger and they are out. My neighbor a Flex driver got charged by 3 dogs at once! You will be glad you have a mace that sprays wide if that happens.
I do rural routes almost every day. 99% of country dogs are nicer than suburban dogs. I don’t know if the airplane ✈️ mode will work on the rabbit or not, Juan is delivering for flex so he is using his own phone. I will try it on the next delivery I get with a closed gate. As far as night delivering goes, I am always sure to leave my van running with all the lights on and flasher on too. One of the drivers at our DSP (Deron) said he hits the (?) at the top and then texts the customers that he is arriving soon. That way they are at least aware that someone will be driving up their driveway in the dark.
Airplane mode Bluetooth on. That’s how it works. Or (mobile data off WiFi on) . Then mark “another safe location” But you have to turn the mobile data back on. Or the airplane mode off after you delivered the package otherwise if you get into trouble and need help dispatch won’t be able to see exactly where you are.
Invest in a led headlamp to wear on your head my dsp gives them out to their drivers around this time survey the area at nite before you enter the driveway because some of these people live on the side of cliffs requiring you to drive up steep curved driveways also check delivery notes most customers will tell you to leave the package at the mail box because they know their driveway is dangerous at night
I see alot videos of Amazon DSP drivers scanning packages inside the van I thought that would mess up the GEO track and packages should be scan at front door
In areas like this i do the airplane mode trick or I’ll back down driveways and I have my ccw so I also carry when I know ahead of time that I have a route like this an recently I was in a area with no street lights or anything completely pitch black but it’s sketchy af
Yes I was involved in a hit and run on a rural area and have had many days were the dogs are out and not tried up or having to make delivery down lane or long curvy roads or dangerous highway are dangerous
I’m sorry that you even had to experience any of this🤦🏾♀️ your best bet delivering in rural areas is to use this method that Juan described and leave it at the mailbox for your safety🙏🏾
I need your advice, I'm in tears can I get fired from having the van get stuck in soft soil. They had to call the tow to get my van out. I'm really worried about losing my job.
It happens! Trust me it’s ok and you’re good! Things like this happen all of the time. I’ve been stuck before in the mud AND in the winter. In fact, my tire blew out on the highway and dispatch had to come and change the tire. These vans don’t have the best traction…Just breathe!🙏🏾
Constant rural routes made me quit my other DSP. I now do the city and burbs and wow what a difference!!! I felt very unsafe with my old DSP. I was constantly in the trailer parks with horrible dirt roads in Nevada you had to go less than 5mph most the time. No bathrooms. Dark outside. I had two customers pull a gun on me beacuse they thought I was a trespassing. Most of the time the navigation is horrible for the rural routes in slum trailer park areas. I don't mind trailers or the occasional insanely long driveway but all the time??!??? Hell no. Plus animals in rural areas are so much worse. Many, many dogs or even rooster incidents. Lol. Don't give me 189 stops and expect me to give a shit with those conditions. Why that dsp is offering a sick sign on bonus because they know how horrible thier area is..my new DSP is a god send. 🙏 All the complaints on the whiteboard in the station is usually the old DSP I worked for lol.
