Why do devs use .ogg instead of .mp3? Not a criticism btw, I just wanna know *why* as well as the pros and cons between the two when it comes to developing games, other media.
Historically it came down to licensing and encoding. MPEG Layer-3, for a very long time, was a proprietary format. Ogg is a free and open-source container format that usualy contains Vorbis audio, which is also a free & open-source codec. Vorbis encodes at a higher quality than MP3 at the same data rate, which works well for games, and it decodes very fast as well.
