  • Paul McCartney performed at Live Aid in front of 72,000 people in Wembley Stadium, London on the 13th July, 1985. Here’s Paul McCartney together with his wife Linda being interviewed backstage. The event was organised by Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for the Ethiopian famine disaster. Broadcast across the world via one of the largest satellite link-ups of all time, the concerts were seen by around 40% of the global population.

You need to do some research about the situation in Ethiopia in the 80's. The civil war that Live Aid helped finance killed more people in 1985-86 than the 1984-85 famine. Geldof in a disgrace, a lying heartless narcissist who has played almost as big a con trick on the world as the sociopathic sadist who was Mother Theresa.

That is just hyperbole. Way over the top. Better than space travel, the pyramids, the internet, electricity, the car, the wheel, fire, discovery of DNA and the double helix.
Live Aid was a peak of all that? McCartney's microphone was muted for two minutes in his own song for a start. Not only that he had no way of hearing his own voice or the piano properly.
The way I look at it live aid was a small piece of reverse colonialism trying to undo some of the damage Europe did when they carved up the African continent. But because of colonisation and the likes of Britain and manufacturing countries like Nigeria. There us still unrest today.
A few pop stars singing a few songs for a famine in Ethiopia is only a drop in the ocean of what needs to be fixed.

It's just that McCartney's microphone was accientally unplugged afterwards and for the fist two verses of "Let It Be". You can hear some backstage chatter before Macca's voice becomes audible (in the original live transmission).
It was McCartney's initiative to rerecord his voice immediately afterwards - although it was unclear if it would ever be used (it wasn't before the DVD release 2 decades later). He did it by himself in his own studio, as I wrote before. No Live Aid staff was involved, no other artists were affected. No trouble for anyone (except McCartney himself).

Re the live broadcast Mercury's vocals were bordering on inaudible for most of the performance and you'll notice that even on the official 2004 DVD version his vocals are oddly distant sounding.
I have never heard the McCartney story before, not in 35 years, so I'm 100% sure you're mistaken. When the DVD was released the story was it was retrieved from a lucky accidental secondary microphone recording found on an uncatalogued b-roll tape in found the BBC archives.

Turns out the money didn't go where it was needed after all. Exactly as many established charities such as Christian Aid and Oxfam, not to mention artists such as Frank Zappa and Huey Lewis who where both asked but refused to perform at Live Aid, predicted.

@@JasonC1782 As early as 1986 the truth was out there with this famous bit of investigative journalism: www.spin.com/featured/live-aid-the-terrible-truth-ethiopia-bob-geldof-feature/
The 1984/85 famine was caused by Ethiopian's dictator lead government's own actions against it's people in the name of fighting communism, though in reality protecting their own power. Ethnic cleansing and forced relocation of "communist sympathizers" went on to kill more Ethiopians than famine during 1985/86.
Yet despite being informed of the true situation Geldof chose to carry on his misguided mission and powered by his own arrogance and lies of omission raised around $100million much of which went straight to the dictators of Africa, not the people it was supposed to help.
The truth is out there and easy to find.
