- Today I'm at one of South Africa's bird photography hotspots - Marievale Bird Sanctuary - to vlog my day photographing birds and nature. I'm using the Canon 400mm F2.8 and talk about how to photograph small birds, the best camera settings and what to photograph in the middle of the day.

FILMING NOTES
Ethics are an important part of wildlife photography & filming wild animals
• I don't use or own a drone - any drone clips are stock footage
• External shots are from picnic spots or designated places.
• External driving shots are made with a tiny 360degree extreme wide-angle camera on a selfie stick.
• I never exit the vehicle except in designated areas.
• Sometimes I will use footage shot outside parks as representative of scenes inside parks.
• I never make noises, feed, touch or otherwise attract the attention of animals.

My name is Will Goodlet. I am a wildlife, landscape and astro photographer working in the African Safari business. I spend my time exploring the dusty roads of Africa with my Land Rover, Basil.
I've been taking photographs for 40 years, first in Hong Kong, where I grew up and later to follow my dreams of a life photographing Africa.

Music is fantastic.
Must add that I just really enjoyed the whole thing. The B-roll is great. It gives me a frame of reference and is super artistic. The soapy window, the back lit siloet of you walking and the grassy feet. Thanks again. Good work.
Storyteller, cinematographer, photographer, what a life he leads to share his incredible talent with us leaving us wanting for more.
Thanks David! Wow :) I'm not sure I deserve all that. Thanks for watching though!
Beautiful and Serene. Would love to visit. Thanks for a great video.
Lovely Africa!
Thanks, yes!
Great video. Love the still of the little egret - I'm copying your style of composition/aspect ratio with some of my editing.
Hi Stephen, thanks for watching! Hope you are getting some great results? Where are you shooting?
Nicely done.
Thanks so much for taking a look and leaving a comment Derek :)
Hey Will! Thanks for sharing your birding and phitography experiences! We hope you get out again soon. Where would you suggest the best place would be to find a Crested Crane and when???
Do you mean the Grey-Crowned Crane? If so, they are found in Natal and the Eastern Cape provinces.
You can see them in various other places - notable Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary in Pretoria (they are not wild and free-roaming there but it’s a sure thing) and central Zimbabwe.
Best time of year is Nov through Feb.
@WillGoodlet yes, Grey-Crowned! Seeing them in Natal will fit our plans! Seeing birds in captivity don't really count, as we would just go to the Portland zoo. I'm sure you agree. Best Wishes!
Great stuff Will - I am really fond about your hard work to create this as well as this location. Hope to meet-up with you with some long lenses and macro gear in the future, I’ve not explored it much on foot!
Niel Lambrechts thanks for taking a look and leaving a comment! Yeah would be good to get out there and find the small things - I’m not a good macro tog so would be nice to learn more :)
nice video and a safe place too.because maybe, sometimes, kruger is safer than guateng :-)
Haha you may have a point there Stefano :)
Marievale is on the migration trail that stretches all the way to Bronkhorstspruit at the dam.
I still need to get to Bronkhorstspruit - I have never been there.
Love the video! Is it safe there ?
Thank you Christiaan. Yep it’s pretty safe. There’s 24 hr security. There is a small settlement on one side and they have been seen hunting illegally with dogs - the last incident I heard about was a photographer who confronted therm. Most weekends there are a lot of togs there. I haven’t had a problem there so it’s been good for me
Great shots
And voice also clear
Which mic your using please reply
Thanks, I use a Rode smart lav and Zoom H5 recorder for voice and the XY mic input for environmental sounds like the engine running, birdlife etc.... I still get things wrong though - in this video I forgot to convert the stereo to mono in one of the pieces to camera. Sometimes I get the levels wrong etc... it would be easier to just use a shotgun mic on top of the camera but I am filming with a Gopro so I can't do that at the moment.
The music is pretty intrusive. A little of it goes a long way. Why not just the natural sounds as you go thru the world there?
