I just called it medieval anime turn based strategy. I dunno, I never really bumped into a conversation about fire emblem where it was confusing to understand. You show someone the barebones gameplay and they're like "oh, it's a turn based strategy" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I mean, I don't if they don't get over the graphics, they aren't going to play the game. Hell, I'm on the fence (because I want to have a life, and don't want to spend 500 hours like I did with three houses and three hopes) and there's already a couple games that came out in December and November people are undoubtedly still playing (for me it's crisis core... And sorta Ragnarok, sorta... Wasn't ever really a god of war person)
My main concern is honestly less about the game's overall quality and moreso how much diverging from tradition these games are doing, and at breakneck pace. Say if a new player starts with 3H or Engage, right? These games have whacky zany systems that are entirely absent in most of the franchise, to the point where I'm worried that new players are gonna HATE the older games because they lack these modern conveniences, and they arent used to games not having these experimental systems to begin with. Like it or not, this series originally started based on a general system of getting many decently fleshed out but otherwise not too crazy deep characters, many of whom could replace early units you lost, many of whom were jsut normal people joining over time, and you were expected to accept some losses and move on. Modern games are abandoning that and designing the new games around reckless abandon and turnwheel abuse. This series barely had a barracks system outside of the radiant games onward, though the GBA games had pre-battle screens to be fair, and FE8 had the world map. Now the games appear to be adopting the monastery system twice in a row, and it could become a series staple, which, you know, is definitely a departure. This series is doing a ton of experimentation, and I feel like thats gonna mess with people's expectations a bit, ya know? Say the next title returns mostly to form, not a lot of monastery, not a lot of crazy stuff like the engage rings or whatever, are new players even gonna remotely enjoy that? I'm not dumping on modern FE here, I'm expressing honest, genuine concern for how new game fans are gonna handle such whiplash in this extremely experimental series. I mean, take Mario for example. Even the shift from classic Mario from the NES and SNES days to New Super Mario on the DS, Wii and onward, still felt like a familiar, 2d mario game. Even when going from Mario 64 to Sunshine and eventually Odyssy, I can see a fan of mario going back to the older entries and generally grasping the concept and adapting accordingly. How far will Fire Emblem go before it becomes whiplash central, ya know?
One thing to consider about Fire Emblem's appeal to new players is that, even if they've never played an FE game before, most gamers will at least be pretty familiar with Fire Emblem thanks to Smash Bros. I'd bet a lot of people, myself included, got their start in Fire Emblem by seeing Marth and Roy in Melee and thinking something like " huh these characters are cool looking but what game are they from?" Then looking up Fire Emblem and trying out whichever ones they could find. With Smash Ultimate in particular having a multitude of different FE characters, and with how incredibly popular Smash Ultimate has been, there's probably a good number of people getting ready to try out Engage thanks to Smash introducing them to characters like Marth and Roy.
never played melee, so i got interested through seeing marth and ike on brawl. i have a soft spot for medieval fantasy settings, so i got intrigued on first sight
Yup. This has been my personal experience with Fire Emblem. Also add that Smash Bros Ultimate has Byleth from 3 Houses. Since 3 Houses is good, I figured Engage would be as well.
I started with Awakening, which I find to be a great jump-in point. After that, I played Fates, Echoes, Three Houses and Hopes, and I dipped my toes in Blazing Blade, Sacred Stones and Shadow Dragon via the Wii-u E-shop. I explain Fire Emblem as chess with a plot. Your pawn has a name and a face, and may die depending on your choices. Or maybe he'll survive, and marry the cute rook he keeps protecting.
this is me except I have the older games downloaded on my 3ds but I haven't played them yet but I started with awakening sinking in 200 hours as a kid then played everything that came after and have had a blast
Honestly, as someone who jumped on with Three Houses and then Fates, my biggest hope is that the success of this game might lead to more rereleases of older FE games.
I'm a veteran at Fire Emblem, but in the third world, so there's a lot of new games I haven't played but, up until Fates, I've played most of them, my first being Sacred Stones, I can say Thraccia 776 and Awakening were the most exciting games I've played. Followed by FE8 and FE12, that being said. I adore Engage's concept and cannot wait until it gets released! I'm excited that Fire Emblem is getting more popularity, spikes like this reassure me of the promising longevity of the franchise is and that warms my heart
I’m kind of like you, played some of them since the first one was localized. Games that I still own physically are Blazing Sword, Sacred Stones, Awakening, and Shadows of Valentia. Returned Fates and Three Houses.
Thracia 776 was amazing! I waited until it was finally translated well in English, which I think was around 2020. Covid really messed with my sense of time, haha.
@@KGDavis-fi2tq The first set of translations were really whack hahahaha 😳 Some people are really convinced it is the best game of the franchise, I don't think the best one but definitely one of the standouts! Wish they would make a reprise (?) in the Engage style! That'll be very cool, people need to know about Nanna and the 12 crusaders t.t
@@obara7366 Nope, it just stopped taking cards directly. You can still put funds onto your overall Nintendo account or onto the Switch, and it'll show up on the 3DS eShop. You've got until late March before the shutdown. I forget the exact date, though.
Much of what makes Engage an easy sell is also what made Awakening and easy sell so many years ago. Both have easy to explain gameplay, an easy to understand story, and more forgiving mechanics. Awakening also used the legacy of past games as a selling point. I am sure the Lucina calling herself Marth and the visual similarities between her, Crom, and Marth got old fans nostalgic for the new games and new fans interested in the old games. Awakening invited new players to take a deeper look into the legacy of FE after they finished playing and that's precisely what Engage is asking new players to today.
But that game worked because it was set in the direct chronological future of the world of FE1 and 3, FE2 and FE 4 and 5, of course it could make such a call back and have it logically work. Engage is operating on deeprealm shenanigans, so it has to work twice as hard to make it work, ya feel me? I dont doubt it will do good, just pointing out the difference here. Also, *General Kenobi*
@@ramenbomberdeluxe4958 I don't think that matters to most people. I played every single Western-released Fire Emblem before Awakening and I had no idea that Awakening was set in the far future of FE 1-5's continents, and I still loved Awakening so it clearly didn't matter that I didn't know. It was obviously a nice bonus for really old fans who were in the know but you didn't need to know every little detail about the old games being referenced to have a good time. That is to say, this part of Awakening didn't work because it fit a bunch of old lore than only the oldest series veterans would know, it worked because it made the series legacy interesting and relevant for people who had never played the oldest games and didn't feel a connection to them. I expect Engage will do the same thing, only with characters rather than the setting itself.
@@ramenbomberdeluxe4958 people often overestimate the importance of a detail like that. Almost no one actually cares. The same phenomenon occurs with the smash bros franchise. For many people their first experience with fe characters were those games and they gained an interest in the franchise as a result. It literally does not matter how strong or weak or convoluted the connection is. Character is in game, person looks up where character from, person play game if interested. It’s that simple.
@@quintonhoffert6526 Wait, you didn't? I could understand maybe Ylisse, but there are so many ways they say that Valm is Valentia. You even fight at the Rigelian castle.
@@supergoodadvice853 Prior to having played Echoes: Shadow of Valentia, I knew nothing about FE2 or most of the original series. I bought and played FE6 when I was 12 because my dad took me with him to Japan for a few months and I found a pre-owned copy in a local game store, but aside from that I never played any of the older FE games. I also haven't re-played Awakening since I beat Shadows of Valentia. It might be pretty obvious looking back that the continents were the same, but my whole point was that if you know you know, and if you don't know then you don't know. I definitely didn't know, and without knowledge of FE2 it definitely isn't obvious that locations in Awakening were significant to older FE games. Considering that it was going to be the last hurrah game if it didn't sell well it's not exactly surprising, but it also wasn't exactly advertised as a core setting detail to new players.
@@AzureRoxe It very well might be polished according to the leaks and previews. Many have said performance is league's above 3H, and it has been finished for over a year now.
@@Senaru i mean you can say that but all the 3DS games were more polished than Three Houses. The frame dips and just crusty visuals in general weren't leagues better than the handheld games.
Three houses was my first fire emblem. Tbh engage design is bothering me. I liked how clean and detailed the 3h top down game looked. The top down in engage looks so busy and convoluted. Also not a fan of the Colgate hair, but I’m probably going to get it anyway
I started FE with Awakening, and have played most of the games (aside from the very early 90s games), and I feel like I’ve gone from a majority to a minority in that… I’m the opposite of excited for Engage. In fact, I think it’s the only new game that I’m not planning on playing. Just everything about the aesthetic choices and writing choices that we’re aware of is everything I want to avoid in a game. In fact it’s really the first time I’ve felt totally isolated by a Fire Emblem game, where it just has nothing for me. Anyone else get that?
Yeah same here. I also started with Awakening and have gone back to play most games in the series. I think graphically the game looks really pretty in a way I haven't seen in Fire Emblem since, I dunno, Awakening's cutscenes really. But the character designs are so off putting to me that I struggle to enjoy the visuals. Plus the way the story has been presented gives me some real "Fates Conquest" levels of nuisance and subtlety. I'm hoping I'm either wrong (that it's actually well written), or I'm absolutely right (so we get those glorious so bad it's good levels of cringe). But hey, I think it's okay to say that this game just isn't for us - it's not like we're starved for FE games. It sounds like it's appealing to a lot of other people, and I really hope it lives up to their expectations. And hey, maybe if we're really lucky, it will end up surprising us too.
Totally agree with you, I also started playing FE with awakening so I'm not so much involved in the return of old characters. The real problem for me tho is the aesthetic of this game, I liked a lot the more """"realistic"""" character design of Three Houses than this scrappy too much anime style design, the old knight too seems like a young dude with a beard on to make him look old...
I feel the same. Which is crazy considering how much I love this series. I really enjoyed TH, I felt like they took what they were trying to do with Fates and made it much better and cohesive. It felt like a step forward in the franchise and I was looking forward to what they would do next with their newfound mainstream success and resources, but Engage feels like they’ve gone backwards to me. And for some that’s the appeal, which I can understand to a certain extent. But if they’re going to rehash the same old story formula there’s gotta be more to it for me than what I’m getting from the reviews and trailers. Everything I’ve seen from the story choices to character design I’ve been very turned off by. I’m hoping it’s simply because it was designed first as a sort of anniversary title that the next installment will push the series further and explore different avenues again. But as it is now, neither the premise or characters of Engage excite me and I don’t think I’ll be buying it.
I really do not understand the character design/aesthetic complaints. They've literally just added a color palette to the game. It looks BETTER than the dull grunge of the last one. It's the smartest thing they can do with a low powered system.
I know you don’t do them anymore, but I would’ve liked for you to do a plot review on this game purely because I want to see the characters “Ghastified”.
This video helped me realize I'm not exactly the target audience for the game. Not that I'm not getting it day one and hoping to be surprised by it, but my previous dismay at seemingly losing the convoluted complex politics of three houses is perhaps misplaced. After all, I started with Awakening, which is similar to Engage in many ways, and that one game got me very very invested in the series, at least from 2013-on (I wish the previous games were fun to me, tried them many many times to no avail). But I can't bitch about a more simplistic story when I take for granted that my own introductory game to the franchise was also a simplistic story and a game that for many years topped my favorite game of all time list Appreciate Engage for what it is and how it is likely to bring in new fans, and hope the next game goes back to a multi-route complicated narrative. That's what I need to do. Would be nice if Engage had second gen units though. That was a massive part of what made me love awakening so much lol
Something I noticed is that Engage is the first game, since the GBA games, that actually looks visually appealing to me. The Ike games always looked the worst to me, Awakening and Fates were fine, but nothing special, Echoes was ok and 3 Houses was a bit too bland. They all were just so brown and gray I guess? I love how colourful everything is. Nothing blends together as looking just "generic". It also brings back most features from Awakening/Fates that I really missed in 3 Houses, while keeping a lot of the customization form 3H. Literally the only thing that is missing so far are Eternal Seals. Everything else I want is there. The game isn't even out and it's already my favourite in the series.
Engage is basically FE's Gokaiger from Super Sentai. gokaiger was an anniversary season with the gimmick of the current team being able to use the powers of the past teams and it was an introduction to super sentai and its history for a ton of people.
Engage would be my 4th game. I've played Awakening, Echoes (my fav) and 3 Houses (Dimitri is my love and how I found your channel). As someone who is an illustrator, animation student, and decent with colour theory and graphic design, I really really don't like the character design, although thanks to you and your videos I've appreciated IntSys experimenting with this art direction, although it's not to my taste. As for my fav explanation of FE, it's that viral tweet of "chess with hot anime characters".
My biggest issue with character design in this game is that they're falling into the trap of oversexualizing the women again. I mean, that one woman in that one shot, with the other three people lined up along side her, is barely wearing anything at all. Its just so bizarre because they HAVE a more tastefully sexy design, that one mage who demanded the characters' souls and had that evil smirk. Then there's the fact that a literal canonical brawler has like no muscles on her whatsoever, once more conforming to the status quo of "needs muh thin womenz" -_-
You know, it’s interesting to think about how I’ve gotten my friends into Fire Emblem. I’ve gotten 2 of them into the series. One I got to try Heroes first (way back when it was new and not the hell hole it is today lol), and then a few years later I got one to try Three Houses. They both love this series now. For the Heroes one, I just said something like, it’s free, and it’s a decent introduction to the characters so if you like them then play one of the games. She wound up playing Heroes a bit, having a good time, then later getting a 3DS to play Fates on. Then my other buddy I got to play Three Houses, he just really likes story based games and had genuinely never thought about giving Fire Emblem a shot until I recommended it. He was one of the people who’s only exposure to FE was through Smash and he didn’t know what to think of it lol. Now he’s played all of the 3DS ones, and helped me get Blazing Sword and Sacred Stones on the Wii U for us to play together. I’m glad Engage will be a good starting point for newcomers, I hope they all have great experiences with the series :)
I've been in love with Fire Emblem ever since the GBA. It makes me so happy to see others get into the series, especially with Three Houses, seeing people I know fall in love with the characters and the story. I think Engage already does an amazing job to draw peoples interest by the character designs alone. Even the ones I don't personally like design wise, they look still just the right amount of interesting to get me curious about their lives and backstory. I just hope the Story won't be too "simple" and that choices matter since it's supposedly only one "path".
Actually, it's the same appeal of Super Robot Wars. Chances are you haven't watched all shows presented in a simple game, but they may ends up going to your backlog once you've finished it.
It's gonna be interesting to see Western fans selling Engage to people. I know every FE is its own thing, but Engage is such a stark contrast in tone compared to every game prior that I fear that might become an unintentional roadblock of sorts in the long run.
Engage will probably make mad success on Japan tho The Japanese really like bright and happy entertaiment more than the dark ones(mostly because life is kinda depressing on Japan, so they like to entertain themselves with happier things) Honestly i think that Engage will be very fun to play and the story will be enjoyable but not really take itself seriously
Honestly this is the first mainline FE game I am skipping. I got burned by Fates before and couldn't finish it for story reasons. Was really happy with the direction Three Houses was taking the franchise, and while I don't think another 'classic' style game is bad, without a story or characters that are worthwhile I really cannot get excited about it, especially when there are so many other games that have my attention right now. I really hope this is a temporary diversion and we see more evolution from the series in the future.
The Shining Force footage at 4:38 took me back. Shining force is the reason I got into Fire Emblem though I was late to the party and didn't play my first FE game until Shadow Dragon was released on the DS. Have pleyed every FE release since then.
Always love seeing other creators takes on my fav franchises, but not to burst any bubbles. Fire Emblem Three Houses is WAY more Marketable and can be a easier sell to people not familiar with players. An All Star FE game is not the pitch. Just another youtubers take personally, but nice video man keep up the work. Cant wait to create content once the game releases :)
I started playing fire emblem with Awakening and loved it to death. I went on to eventually play all the other fire emblem games (a couple multiple times) and beat most of them. I’m pretty excited for Engage from a gameplay standpoint because I’m addicted to the gameplay loop already of these games. Honestly though I’m still not totally sold on the story and characters but won’t really know until I actually play. Cant wait to play and even the worst fire emblem game is still pretty high in my favorite games of all time list!
i love fire emblem sm, ive played almost all of the english games, and even played fe6. im currently working my way through fe9 with 17 and 10 to follow. im so unbelievably excited for this game! as someone who plays feh and has gotten to know at least a bit about all the characters who are emblems, i cannot wait for other people to learn about them and their stories! fire emblem has been apart of my life for over 10 years, despite how young i am, my late uncle gave me his GBA and a lot of games, including fe8. so the series really means something to me and im glad i could be apart of this community!
I acknowledge the irony of this statement, but it looks like Fire Emblem; JRPG edition. I do like JRPG, generally, but it is a direction I'm not so sure of. Whilst various things are a bit offputting, I'll probably get it regardless. Because I'm an idiot who's easily lured into franchises. Hopefully will enjoy it though. I started with Awakening, and briefly touched fe7, 8 and shadow dragon on wii U store.
I'm not a fan of the character designs at all, but I'm still looking forward to seeing Sigurd and Leaf in a modern game. I just hope the game is challenging enough.
It'll be the 7th one for me, and somehow it hasn't managed to hook me yet. Started with FE7, skipped some titles because of availability. (9-12) It just sort of feels too much like FEH, TMS and FE14 had a baby. I play FEH but it doesn't hold enough depth for me to make for a full game instead of a mobile game, and FE14 and I never really became friends. TMS was ok as a game but not very FE-like at all. The presence of all these older characters just feels gimmicky and to me detracts from whatever standalone story and characters the game will have. The character design also doesn't really work for me, but that comes down to preference. Maybe it'll grow on me. But I'll play it regardless and I hope it'll prove my expectations wrong and be a great game.
Unless the gameplay is just REALLY good, I'm actually not buying it because of the art style. I know, kind of dumb, but I really don't like the character designs this game. I thought Three Houses was a perfect match for modern Fire Emblem and we've quickly moved away from it.
I have second thoughts about Engage's world setting, story, and characters so I may not even try this game. But if the game's purpose is to attract newcomers into the series then I hope Engage becomes really successful.
Although it’s personally more interesting to me than Three Houses ever was, I’m still lukewarm on Engage because it looks to be another “new school” Fire Emblem game. Meaning it appears focused on social activities and customization. I’m honestly WAY more excited for that rumored FE4 remake, a game with a more story and strategy focus.
@@therealjaystone2344 probably cause 3H sold gangbusters and they wanted to milk it while they could. Also, Engage in some form may have been planned before 3H, since it’s a “celebration” of the series’s 30th(?) anniversary).
I played three Houses and Heroes and I really want to try the older ones. I wish the success of Engage would make the developers remake the old ones for the switch.
The Art Style plus I recently got into the Strategy RPG Genre currently playing Triangle Strategy and I also I want to know the characters better in Engage. The Combat also seems fun as well.
I really try to keep my mind opened but I'm going to skip on Engage. I played many FE, from GBA to recent games, the serie gradually loses its soul. Engage will be a massive commercial success, for sure... But I don't recognize the serie I loved so much all these years. Too much fanservice, too easy, less tactic, and now we have idolish type of characters all over the game, tiny girls, big boobs, etc... 🙄 Almost no one is dressed to be on a battlefield! And honestly, this is the worst chara design of the whole serie. Disappointed, but not surprised.
Thank you for this! I’ve had an interesting experience explaining the appeal for this game to my (non-gamer) partner, and it felt much easier than explaining FE3H to them. I think back to convo about 3H with a security guard at CVS and, once I got passed the chess part, felt kinda ramble and at a loss. But this one feels very user friendly. I’m excited to see how it pans out as someone who’s played all but FE 2-5
Fire Emblem long time fan, with Three Houses and Hopes both being first day buys and a huge hits for me...but Engage just isn't doing anything for me. It looks dull, without a hook like Garreg Mach Monastery academy, without the seriousness and lore depth of that game, and I am just not a fan of the art style and tone. I mean, the graphics are definitely polished and I can understand wanting to branch out the series, but it just looks to me like a discount Xenoblade or Genshin Impact. Love those games, but it's done better there, and it just doesn't feel like FE anymore. I also feel like FEH kind of already occupies the niche this game is supposed to fill. Surprised to hear the huge pre-order numbers, honestly, especially since this game seems to be getting not all that much press here in the States. This video does explain some of the casual appeal, but still. For me, maybe the reviews will change my mind...let's see.
I started with awakening, played some older ones liked PoR, Radiant Dawn, Sacred Stones, but havent played or really even thought about the series since I played Fates after it was released. I’m excited to get back into this series with this game
Fire Emblem Engage is like SRPG, only instead of being a reference to mythology, your summons are protagonists from previous games in the series, or a Persona game in a fantasy setting, but instead of Jungian archetypes you, again, summon characters from previous games with all their backstory, personality, and lore. Emblem will be my first Fire Emblem game, but I've played other games by Intelligent Systems such as Advance Wars Dark Conflict. I have a fairly clear idea of what to expect but none of the specifics.
I'm not a big fan of the new art style and aesthetics but I'll definitely try the game before I make up my mind. Even if I still don't like the art style, good gameplay and writing can more than make up for it.
@@Material_Monkey has fire emblem in recent years ever felt like it wasn't anime? This is a geninue question everytime a character was added to smash everyone complained another anime swordsman is coming to the game.
@@breadisrad8647 There is a difference between Howls Mowings Castle and Highshool DXD. Fire Emblem was always anime but not weeb. At least not in an unbearable amount. The game will still be good but if Awakening (im an awakening baby haha) looked like Engage, I would have never played it and I would have never become a FE fan. Its just my taste so if you like this, its all good. How I said, the game will be good regardles and the next game will probably appeal to me again.
@@Material_Monkey I understand that. I def think its going more in like a genshin direction but anime is anime to me. They had face petting, marrying family members, blowing into the mic, etc. within the past 10 years so the new look isn't something I'm too affected by lol.
"Appealing character design" I mean, every character except the Jaegen looks like a doll-like child, which is probably one of my least favorite aesthetics in all media.
I get what you mean, but I'm personally not a big fan of this "casual/simply accessible" factor myself. It's contrary to my favorite aspects such as complex plot and gameplay
Got into the series over a month ago because of female Alear being super cute. Played three houses already, but then switched games to not get tired of the gameplay before Engage comes out. Yeah I'm that simple, the girl is cute so I'm in. But I was thinking about getting the switch recently, and she just happened to be what made me finally pull the trigger. And the cheesy anime OP just makes me more hyped.
I keep seeing FE channels try and prop up the inclusion of classic characters as a good thing, but none of them have sold me on the idea at all. I'm really hoping their role is much more minor than it's made out to be.
From what I can tell, they only play a minor role. You just get their abilities via rings and fight alongside them. The fact that these are linked to a classic character feels more like flavor text than anything else. Only 1 seems to appears in the hub at a time for conversation, so they’re not overshadowing the new characters much.
woe of large appeal is we see where that leads, mediocrity by low floor skill level this game appeal is definitely to being after 3houses and a ios game that makes too much money, if ppl don't like a srpg like FE i wouldn't want FE to change to accommodate them endlessly never be overtly happy something gains a large mainstream appeal, never goes well
This’ll be the third Fire Emblem for me (first was FETH) but how I got into it really was a slow burn, starting back during Brawl when I got introduced to Marth and Ike. Weird that they added characters I’ve never heard of, I even thought they were Smash exclusive characters, but a few years later a friend described Fire Emblem to me and strongly encouraged me to play it. The Permadeath mechanic was the most interesting to me and that’s why caught my attention… and eventually I played it for the first time like 8 years later lol. It was just through continued exposure, through word of mouth, through Byleth getting added to Smash that I eventually conceded and got Three Houses. Now it’s one of my favourite video game franchises of all time 😊
I'll be honest this game doesn't have me nearly as hyped as some of the more recent games. Hearing how bland the story is according to early reviews, how broken some of the mechanics seem, and how incredibly fanservicey it is makes me hesitate on buying it rn
I’m a compete newbie to fire emblem coming from series like Pokémon and Monster Hunter and seeing the brighter colours really caught my attention as well as the more silly character design. There’s two people with really cool hats.
Gotta be honest as an old fan of the series this game is utterly unappealing to me its going to be the first fire emblem game since fe7 i havent bought upon release (maybe wont at all) if this art direction and rehashing of older characters/story is what they are going to do going forward im likely gonna ditch the series.
Hard disagree that it appeals strongly to new players. Not to say new players won't enjoy it but when you're putting an emphasis on legacy it's hard to say that it's made to draw in players.
I've played and loved FE7, Awakening, and Three Houses. Three Houses was by far my favorite though. I'm still not sold on Engage yet, I think I'll wait for some reviews to come out. I loved the politics and characters of 3H, and a "simpler" story and tropes is a hard sell for me. I'm keeping my eye on it though!
I'd say awakening is... "Simple enough" The classic "multiple countries with a unique gimmick and eventually dark dragon" is all there I'm optimistic about this, so I think it'll win you over in the end
This really surprises me, but I’m actually thinking of skipping engage. Or maybe playing it in like a year. You make great points about how it’s simplicity appeals to new players, and the “all stars” mechanic gives new players a sense of legacy and old players something to love too. But for me, the story looks a little tooo cookie cutter and similar to what we’ve seen, and I’m kind of over summoning heroes from ages past like we did in the mobile game. I like that the weapon triangle and red/blue squares are coming back, but I feel like I’d rather have a brand new game with a brand new concept, or a straight remake, but not something in this weird middle space
I’m one of those people in which three houses was my first ever Fire Emblem game. I was at a friends house and he was playing it. I watched him play and I knew right away that I’d like it. I bought a switch and the game that day. I have since gone back and played the 3DS games and have enjoyed those as well. Excited for this one too!
This is actually what I loved about Awakening's DLC. I started on Shadow Dragon, so it let me revisit some of my favorites as well as learn more about others I didn't know of, like Roy.
Ok fine. I literally had 0 hype for this game and was planning to skip it but the constant barrage of “this game is amazing” videos that have come out has gotten to me. You win Engage…
Not to me it isnt, this is easily the least Iv been interested in a release of it since I started playing it, but lets see, as long as the story and characters are good im gonna be happy.
Now it may just be me but I really appreciated the different routes in fire emblem three houses. I have literally beat the game with every House at least once and play through black eagles twice because of the branching path. I hope I don’t feel limited by only having a single story. I also really enjoyed the teaching mechanic in three houses so that I could literally do anything I wanted with any of my characters. I have the special edition pre-ordered because I enjoyed three houses so much I really hope it is as good of a game as everybody seems to think it’s going to be.
I really enjoyed Three Houses as well, but I couldn't bring myself to fight against my first chosen house, the Black Eagles. I very much loved the teaching mechanic and the level of party customization it brought. Edelgard on a wyvern was absolutely unstoppable haha.
Gameplay actually does heavily depend on replayability, for a lot of people. You'll see far more people replaying Fire Emblem Fates, than Echoes, even with a far worse story. Namely Conquest. Three Houses also has the advantage of many different ways to play, but for me, I've gone back to the Conquest challenges, just because the first half of Three Houses can be tiring.
Whenever trailers for this game it just really catches my eye and gets me a little bit hyped. I had never cared about to played Fire Emblem until I asked for Three Houses for Christmas. Now 16 Chapter/40 hours deep into my first (Blue Lions) Three Houses run, I’m very excited for Engage to be the next place I go. Then after I return to Fodlan to finish the other routes, I’m excited to delve into the series past. I grabbed a copy of Awakening I found out of town. I recently got a Wii U to play Xenoblade X so I can get Blazing Blade and Sacred Stones. It won’t be launch week that I get Engage, as it happens to land in the middle of a very busy, inconvenient 3-week period where I’ll be focusing on my education, but it won’t be a long wait. It will be getting my undivided attention between semesters.
i've played shadow dragon onwards and to me... engage is the opposite of appealing. every time i see new info about it, it puts me off even more. it's to the point i'm not even sure i'm going to play it. i'm waiting to see how the story and gameplay are- if they're really good, then maybe i can get over the presentation, but so far the visuals, designs, and even music are just turning me off of it so badly
@@Ultimabuster92 i play and love genshin, but when i want genshin... i play genshin. this whole game feels like an identity crisis. i understand wanting to appeal to a wider audience, but i feel that at least in the way they're going about it, they're losing what makes fire emblem so interesting and appealing, at least to me. i hope that i'm wrong and the actual game ends up being great, i'm just... not hopeful
@@hinatot I'll wait aswell. I learned not to judge too quickly. But these are my first impressions at least. But to be fair, Fire Emblem never managed to build an own identity aside from the very first games. Awakening build itself upon nostalgia, Fates relied too heavily on Fanservice and negelcted its characters and story, Echoes was another remake and Three Houses didn't take a page from Persona and (a bit) Harry Potter, it wrote an entire book about them. They always rely on successful games or concepts prior to them and don't dare to try something new
@@Ultimabuster92 fair critique, but they all feel like fire emblem games. from what i've seen so far from engage, it lacks that same... depth, for lack of a better word, that even awakening and fates (love them both, but they can be incredibly clumsy with their worlds ) had in their worlds and stories. i hope i'm wrong, but just every time there's new info, i just feel more and more disappointed. here's to hoping for some s+ tier writing to get me to ignore all the visual and audio presentation issues i have...
If I'm counting spin offs, it'll be my 11th. If not, then the 8th. Honestly, I am just soooo put off by the art style and character designs. It just feels like such a wild departure from what FE is supposed to be and even more fearful that they'll take away the wrong lessons for what makes it successful like what happened from Awakening to Fates where one team got it in their heads that dating sim was the way to go.
I think I'm going to give it a miss. It seems to be a heavily 'nostalgia' based game rather than giving anything to players who joined recently. The aesthetics are very overpowering too and it feels too 'anime' compared to the more grittier styles of Awakening and Three Houses.
@@cancerstinks1 Ahahaha...look at some of the female character designs again and get back to me, you will actually be stunned. Not the dark skinned lance user or that tasteful mage with the face veil, I mean the OTHERS, like that woman lined up in that one shot with the other three people for example, or that pegasus knight with her cleavage out for no reason.
Three Houses popped my FE cherry, and... I liked it, but it was a huge slog to get through, especially towards the end. It's all because of the damn monastery being basically required if you want to keep up with your enemies. Replenish your battalions, harvest your crops, view support convos, raise student's motivation, guide their learning, talk with every NPC. All in between every chapter, and if you don't do this, you're not going to have a good time in battle. It was so tedious and boring I almost didn't finish it. 60 hours, Verdant Wind, never playing it again. Hopefully the floating social island is optional or at least mostly.
When i did my 1st run in 3houses in hard mode, the monastery stuff was getting boring because of how easy the game was, it had no impact. However i completed all run in maddening afterwards and this time every action you did in the monastery was enjoyable/meaningfull. Why ? Because you had to MinMax to spike in midgame for chapter 13 and not getting softlock. So with a harder difficulty it is actually a nice thing to do !
Smash has the potential to sell this game even more than it sold FE7 to us. The old meme about asking whether Roy or Marth will be in the latest FE game is literally applicable here.
@@1stCallipostle you seem really upset that I don't like this art style. I much prefer the path of radiance look to fire emblem games. I don't know why you're upset that somebody has a differing opinion. Than you, but I respect the fact you might like it, but it's not for me
Well... as a person whose only experience with FE is Awakening, Fates and 3H, if this game doesn't allow you to have sex with everything that moves - it's unappealing %)
I jumed in at Three houses in 2019, i have always know about Fire Emblem because of Smash but i never got a DS and i didn't have good taste in videogames during the Game Cube and Wii era. I loved 3H so much i went back and played every FE down to FE6 (even got a second hand 3DS recently) i'm very excited for Engage!
I started playing the series with the internationally released GBA titles and have played most of the entries since (New Mystery excluded) and tinkered with fan translations of older titles. I am very excited for Engage. Also, don't underestimate FEH. I tried to introduce FE to a friend who was interested, but turned off by the permadeath concept. But after she experimented with FEH back around its launch, I managed to convince her to try Awakening and she really enjoyed it. Casual Mode is also a major factor, as she would never have played it if permadeath was the only option.
It's interesting to me because I feel as though the average FEH player moving on to the main series was not a thing that happens. I mean they're so different that I assumed they'd be completely turned off, just as FEH turned me off
@@1stCallipostle Part of the intention of FEH was to draw new players through it to the mainline entries. The gameplay in FEH is very different, but the way its promoted and presented through the characters makes it a good entry point in a lot of ways. Genealogy of the Holy War hasn't seen a localized release, but people that play FEH have at least been introduced to characters like Sigurd, and Seliph even won second in CYL last year. The game has done a lot to make the Japan-only titles and characters not feel alienating to see in a game like Engage.
@@Hailinel I guess? It just feels like it's community is mostly separate, and I can't say I mind that. Resources about 4/5, even if you haven't played them, are all over the net, so they feel incredibly at home for a lot of the "core community" But I guess there's more blend than I thought, so I may well be standing entirely corrected
okay.. so i'm fairly inexperienced with the fire emblem games... i've played them slightly here and there but never commited to beating any of them. but i find myself more and more interested in trying to get into this series.. my question is, as a 3ds and switch owner... should i try go buy the older 3ds games before the shut down? or let the past be the past and just buy engage? i can't afford to buy both without shelling out far more money than i should of my pay check. what would you do?
I preordered the game yesterday morning and it's gonna be my very first Fire Emblem game! What caught my interest was the character design, character artworks, colors and graphics. Since I play Genshin Impact I feel like the 3D models look very similar and that's just something I love. After watching your Video I am even more excited for the game!!!!! (I even got a discount on that game and bought it for about 43 bucks 🔥🔥)
I started with Fates, went back to Awakening and have played every new release since. The closer we get to Engage the more excitement I'm beginning to feel. Though I was a little disappointed by the apparent change to a simpler story and seemingly more cookie cutter character compared to Three Houses, the gameplay just looks so good and polished. Feels like a return to Awakening and Fates, both of which I loved in spite of their, sometimes glaring, flaws. But overall I do prefer the approach to story, characters and the world that both Echoes and Three Houses gave us, even if gameplay left a little to be desired.
Not counting the warrior off-shoot games, this will be my 6th Fire Emblem played. I first played Path of Radiance back in ‘05 with my friend who had a GameCube. I was interested enough to buy and play Radiant Dawn on the Wii and I’ve been hooked ever since. In the past I’ve explained Fire Emblem as: “A turn-based chess match that if you loose a piece it’s gone forever. Sometimes if pieces are next to each enough they want to get married and have baby chess pieces…that you then also use for war.”
i love everything except the mc.. i just can't get used to that coloring of half red and blue.. i cant even fondly seeing fcking ppl using jeans that is cutted up (old style model) or fcking diff color socks and the likes and i can't even get used to see anything that is remotely unbalanced.. smh i'm fine with hetero eyes in anime ... but this is too over the top.. putting all that aside i will still play it tho.. too bad it's such a big con for me.. maybe FE trying smthg new now
After playing close to every fire emblem game made in english and a few japanese with translation packs, this definitely won't be my first in the series, but I'm really looking forward to it. Seeing all the old characters back in action, again removing the weapon breaking is will be nice as well. It just looks great in total. Three houses was a bit of a let down to me because I really did not care for the walking around school and schmoozing with all the characters, nor did I like many of the characters. Through it all my favourite, maybe out of nostalgia, is Blazing Blade. It was my first introduction to the series, and i really enjoyed the characters and the story, and the art. Awakening being another of my favourites, again for story and art, but as well as the new things they brought in, or brought back from old old games.
This is probably my 6th fire emblem and my last being recently playing fe4, I've made it to the halfway point and that game has me so hyped for Sigurd now because of it
Engage is going to be my 3rd FE mainline game, as I’ve played Feh & Three Hopes. Engage is leaving me on a mix and cautious level. One thing I remember is watching the Opening for Engage someone in the comments mentioned how non of the Emblem characters are shown and seem they might be more sidelined. Which personally I think is a bad move IF that’s the case. Again not confirming, just cautious about it but I’m definitely giving it a chance
As someone who is both a fan of FE and Game of Thrones, i am HORRIFIED you use GoT to describe FE 😭😭 They are not at all similar from a story perspective and i fear you are setting up people for MAJOR disappointment in the simplicity of most FE games’s narrative. Youre doing people a real disservice calling FE “chess but with characters and a story like Game of Thrones.”
Engage is a mixed bag to be honest. My first FE was Awakening and later on Fates and loved them to death. Because of that I guess I am the minority that really liked the generation system it provided. Shipping certain characters and getting kids provided a lot of replayability imo. Unfortunately any other FE is lacking in that department and as fun the gameplay could be I wont replay a Game just for that. Especially long games like the recent FE3H. Also nostalgia wont hit me as hard as well. I dont need Marth or Chrome/Lucina in every FE. They appear so often as cameo or got mentioned that it gets annoying actually xD Visually Engage looks great...except the MC so yeah. I will wait some time after release.
I played every single Fire Emblem game BUT BSFE and for explaining Fire Emblem, I once had to tell my younger cousin what Fire Emblem was so I explained it like this "It's like chess but the pieces are actual people and there's story with the people" and then he responded with "that sounds boring"
This be my 4th or 5th and I’ll still pick it up but I’d say I was more exciting for Three houses more than Engage. I’m still adjusting to this more colorful art style it was a bit shocking for me. I’ve played Awakening, Fates, Shadows remake, three houses, and I did dip into the mobile game a bit. But Awakening was my first and it still holds a special plane and three houses has been my favorite, I looked into the legacies there are many amazing stories I would love to experience cause reading it can only go so far. Fire emblem is a series evolving and changing I am happy we are getting a one path story with hopefully some choices the character can still make but awakening is still my favorite maybe cause I wasn’t the main character (until the end lol) but working with Chrom and his knights getting to know the world and characters around me was fun. Three houses is a current favorite due to its darker stories at times, complex characters, progression system, the world and more. I’m happy to have stumbled upon awakening at my local game crazy when those were still around and got sucked in
I generally research games I’m into, but it’s not the same as experiencing them yourself. FEH at least helps me get a feel for some of the characters. However, it was great watching you play Gaiden before I played SoV myself, since it let me see how the game was originally. Hard for me not to be excited to see new remakes after that. I feel IS is hoping to just make this game more fun because they know people haven’t really been buying fire emblem games for the story lately. Gameplay and character relationships are usually what sell it. I’m excited to try out the new class system and combat mechanics the most now knowing that healers will always be armed.
has anyone played the "Game of Thrones" or "chess" card to explain Fire Emblem to people? Tell me your funny "explaining FE" stories! Hpw many Fire Emblem games have you played? Thanks for watching and please these links out!

I have indeed.
Usually I explain Fire Emblem as chess with HP and all your pieces are actual characters
Normally i don't even know how i should explain Fire Emblem to other people lol
I explained it as Fantasy chess to a friend who doesnt play vidoegames. Pretty easy to explain that way
My main concern is honestly less about the game's overall quality and moreso how much diverging from tradition these games are doing, and at breakneck pace.
For sure, after seeing them in Smash I knew about the hype surrounding the games but didn't get into them until 3H. Big fan now
This. I got started when I saw Ike absolutely obliterate the Ancient Minister.
Yes! Exactly. This what worked for me too lol. Seeing Marth in Brawl and then seeing Awakening also have “Marth” made me want to buy it 🙌
never played melee, so i got interested through seeing marth and ike on brawl. i have a soft spot for medieval fantasy settings, so i got intrigued on first sight
The perfect chess analogy for Fire Emblem.
I have the exact same experience with fire emblem, but now I'm a bit stuck on what to play next since the rest of the titles seem very intimidating...
this is me except I have the older games downloaded on my 3ds but I haven't played them yet but I started with awakening sinking in 200 hours as a kid then played everything that came after and have had a blast
Honestly, as someone who jumped on with Three Houses and then Fates, my biggest hope is that the success of this game might lead to more rereleases of older FE games.
Yes please. They need to have a year of the Emblem localizing a few more games at the very least.
@@whitewolf3051 Yeah, reading back at my comment, saying I'm a vet it's an overstatement. I'm more of a really passionate casual player hahahaha
I’m kind of like you, played some of them since the first one was localized.
Games that I still own physically are Blazing Sword, Sacred Stones, Awakening, and Shadows of Valentia.
Returned Fates and Three Houses.
Shit, same. Sacred Stones is what introduced me to the series. Played it through the 3DS Ambassador Program too?
Thracia 776 was amazing! I waited until it was finally translated well in English, which I think was around 2020. Covid really messed with my sense of time, haha.
@@KGDavis-fi2tq The first set of translations were really whack hahahaha 😳
Some people are really convinced it is the best game of the franchise, I don't think the best one but definitely one of the standouts! Wish they would make a reprise (?) in the Engage style! That'll be very cool, people need to know about Nanna and the 12 crusaders t.t
This likely going to be my first Fire Emblem game. I doubt I’ll get Fates in time before the 3DS shop shuts down. So yeah, better late than never.
Didn't the 3DS shop already shut down August 2022?
Houses is good, you should at least try it when you’re done with engage.
@@obara7366 Nope, it just stopped taking cards directly. You can still put funds onto your overall Nintendo account or onto the Switch, and it'll show up on the 3DS eShop. You've got until late March before the shutdown. I forget the exact date, though.
@@obara7366it doesn’t shut down til March of this year
@Obara The shop officially shuts down this March, it's just that you aren't able to add funds to the e-shop anymore since August
If anything I'm loving how this game looks. It might be the most polished FE game to date.
I don't think you know the difference between a game's looks and it being polished.
@@AzureRoxe It very well might be polished according to the leaks and previews. Many have said performance is league's above 3H, and it has been finished for over a year now.
I mean I hope so, since it’s the latest game…
@@Senaru i mean you can say that but all the 3DS games were more polished than Three Houses. The frame dips and just crusty visuals in general weren't leagues better than the handheld games.
how the hell do you know that
Three houses was my first fire emblem.
I feel the same :/
I really do not understand the character design/aesthetic complaints.
But I can't bitch about a more simplistic story when I take for granted that my own introductory game to the franchise was also a simplistic story and a game that for many years topped my favorite game of all time list
Appreciate Engage for what it is and how it is likely to bring in new fans, and hope the next game goes back to a multi-route complicated narrative. That's what I need to do.
Would be nice if Engage had second gen units though. That was a massive part of what made me love awakening so much lol
I really appreciate it when developers try to please the casuals and hardcore fans. It’s definitely a challenging thing to do
I don't because the in between is usually ass.
Or any Super Robot Wars games, specially 30, that has older versions of Amuro and Koji Kabuto
In my personal opinion.
It gets more and more interesting for me, so yeah it is.
W take, W echoes enjoyer
My biggest issue with character design in this game is that they're falling into the trap of oversexualizing the women again.
I mean, that one woman in that one shot, with the other three people lined up along side her, is barely wearing anything at all. Its just so bizarre because they HAVE a more tastefully sexy design, that one mage who demanded the characters' souls and had that evil smirk.
Then there's the fact that a literal canonical brawler has like no muscles on her whatsoever, once more conforming to the status quo of "needs muh thin womenz" -_-
@@ramenbomberdeluxe4958 yeah its not as bad as other series but they are going fan service all the way in this game
@@alexterieur8813 Yeah I dont think any game at this point is gonna top Fates in the fanservice department, but still, yikes...
@@alexterieur8813 hey aren't going to fan service at all. The outfits and camera are tasteful.
As a newer fan of the series I really like that even though the fans are really dedicated and the series is pretty old by now there is 0 gatekeeping
It's anime chess with war themes. Fits legit every game.
The contrast in tone is what makes me really curious about how it will be received once it's out. Or what its legacy will become as time passes.
Engage will probably make mad success on Japan tho
The Japanese really like bright and happy entertaiment more than the dark ones(mostly because life is kinda depressing on Japan, so they like to entertain themselves with happier things)
Honestly i think that Engage will be very fun to play and the story will be enjoyable but not really take itself seriously
@@crusiver8453 and politics too

As a Dreamcast kid, I'm sad Shining Force never stuck around the way Fire Emblem did.
I wish Shining Force 3 would get a release with Engage's engine, it would be a masterpiece.
I'd really wish the Divine Dragon pre-orders were back for sale. :(
It's back in stock on the Walmart website
@@libby2162 Thanks so much.
i love fire emblem sm, ive played almost all of the english games, and even played fe6. im currently working my way through fe9 with 17 and 10 to follow. im so unbelievably excited for this game! as someone who plays feh and has gotten to know at least a bit about all the characters who are emblems, i cannot wait for other people to learn about them and their stories! fire emblem has been apart of my life for over 10 years, despite how young i am, my late uncle gave me his GBA and a lot of games, including fe8. so the series really means something to me and im glad i could be apart of this community!
It just sort of feels too much like FEH, TMS and FE14 had a baby.
I was literally sitting in my car this morning wondering where my favorite fire emblem RUclipsrs were.
Thanks for the video.
More FE = GOOD
Was afraid this series was dead in the water a few years ago.
So nice to see Nintendo actually beginning to respect FE.

This will definitely be my first Fire Emblem Game because its the first to appeal to me.
Interesting. Out of curiosity what about this game has appealed to you that made you want to play it?
The Art Style plus I recently got into the Strategy RPG Genre currently playing Triangle Strategy and I also I want to know the characters better in Engage. The Combat also seems fun as well.
They are all pretty cool but I guess this is a nice way to see the history.
Yeah, thats honestly the biggest turn off for me as well. I kinda cringe every single time I look at the player lords

Engage looks very promising from previews and I was excited about it since day 1
I get what you mean, but I'm personally not a big fan of this "casual/simply accessible" factor myself.
Mf said "I like Toothpaste Chan, I'm sold"
I have nothing but the utmost respect for that move. Chad behavior
“Has a very appealing character design…….mileage may vary on this one….”
Lol. TRUE.
@@Cowmoo83 I'm really hoping that is correct. I don't want to know anything about their stories in case I get a chance to play the old games

this game appeal is definitely to being after 3houses and a ios game that makes too much money, if ppl don't like a srpg like FE i wouldn't want FE to change to accommodate them endlessly

What do they do expect? Most FE stories are always bland.
@@therealjaystone2344 but they at least have a good amount of lore to back it up which this game apparently lacks lore at all

The new brighter style does feel very Pokémon to me.
Welcome to the community
Gotta be honest as an old fan of the series this game is utterly unappealing to me its going to be the first fire emblem game since fe7 i havent bought upon release (maybe wont at all) if this art direction and rehashing of older characters/story is what they are going to do going forward im likely gonna ditch the series.
Three houses can be very appealing to people by calling it: “Hogwarts meets Westeros.”
... never sully 3h by comparing it to terfborts again.
"Simple enough"
The classic "multiple countries with a unique gimmick and eventually dark dragon" is all there
I'm optimistic about this, so I think it'll win you over in the end
Do yourself a favor and play Shining Force I and II for the Mega Drive / Genesis. You´ll love them.
Every fire emblem has been pretty cool. Doesn't hurt that each game has a ton of characters.
You win Engage…
its not worth it, just gonna be a FE lite game for anniversary
never feel obligated to get every game just cause brand u like
Not to me it isnt, this is easily the least Iv been interested in a release of it since I started playing it, but lets see, as long as the story and characters are good im gonna be happy.
Honestly outside of the MC I like the character designs for the most part. Few aren't my favorites but in general I like the looks.
This will be my fifth game, and I kinda have mixed feelings about it ngl.
i've played shadow dragon onwards and to me... engage is the opposite of appealing. every time i see new info about it, it puts me off even more. it's to the point i'm not even sure i'm going to play it. i'm waiting to see how the story and gameplay are- if they're really good, then maybe i can get over the presentation, but so far the visuals, designs, and even music are just turning me off of it so badly

@@hinatot I'll wait aswell. I learned not to judge too quickly. But these are my first impressions at least.

Yea. The game honestly became more and more of a chore towards the end
It does have a problem with the monastery being a big thing. Fire Emblems before that did not have even close to as much non combat stuff.
Smash has the potential to sell this game even more than it sold FE7 to us.
The old meme about asking whether Roy or Marth will be in the latest FE game is literally applicable here.

I just want it to be a difficult and balanced game, the emblem rings are way to broken to be in this game.
Because of how much a success Engage is likely to be, let’s just hope the game doesn’t as badly snubbed as Three Houses by the Game Awards jury this.
Well... as a person whose only experience with FE is Awakening, Fates and 3H, if this game doesn't allow you to have sex with everything that moves - it's unappealing %)
😑

She broke the fence. GOTY
That was also my takeaway! The battle animation / environments are way nicer in this game.
In the past I’ve explained Fire Emblem as:
“A turn-based chess match that if you loose a piece it’s gone forever. Sometimes if pieces are next to each enough they want to get married and have baby chess pieces…that you then also use for war.”
i love everything except the mc.. i just can't get used to that coloring of half red and blue.. i cant even fondly seeing fcking ppl using jeans that is cutted up (old style model) or fcking diff color socks and the likes and i can't even get used to see anything that is remotely unbalanced.. smh i'm fine with hetero eyes in anime ... but this is too over the top.. putting all that aside i will still play it tho.. too bad it's such a big con for me.. maybe FE trying smthg new now
The Pepsi aesthetic has grown on me as time goes on. Maybe thinking of it that way will help

Three Houses is my first FE game, thanks to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
They appear so often as cameo or got mentioned that it gets annoying actually xD
Visually Engage looks great...except the MC so yeah.
I've played Awakening, all of fates, Echoes, all of 3 houses, and fire emblem warriors, I am so ready for Engage.
Hopefully the story isn't the absolute mess that is three houses.
