The Police seem to want to have the power to do that themselves but are not all that keen when the public do it. The Police in this video also seem to be missed the legal training session when they discussed the fact that the public do not have to assist them in any investigation.

Recognising AB pushed them towards having the courage to disobey a command from their sergeant. Had it been someone other than AB, the risk of getting in trouble for disobeying the sergeant would have been far greater, and it would have been far less clear that their sergeant did not have a legitimate reason for the search. That's the problem with all command structures. Often there is no time to communicate all the details that justify a command, and even when there is, people are often too lazy, too bad with language or too agitated to do it. Therefore when someone new arrives on the scene, it is the normal case, not an exception, that they don't really understand what's going on. But they are still expected to follow all commands whose basis they don't understand. Except, of course, for commands that they _know_ to be illegal. But that's a very high bar that is rarely met. Arguably it wasn't even met in this case. This is why refusing to follow the command took courage.
