That's another interesting fact about this scene. Obi Wan had held both Qui Gon and Satine in a similar way after they both were slain by Maul. And as Maul dies, Obi Wan still shows him compassion and holds him the same way he had previously held his loved ones in their final moments.

It was only in death did Maul find peace. As much of a monster as he was, you can't help but feel sorry for him. Even Obi-Wan, the man whom Maul devoted his whole life to hurting and killing, was willing to show him compassion and forgiveness. It's just such a beautiful death scene.

@@spikeeus season 1 wasn't very uninteresting to me and I had a tough time connecting to any of the characters but that was the same case for a lot of the new characters that were in clone wars. i think this is just a part of dave filoni's process, he starts with one-dimensional characters in order too highlight the growth of the character as the story progresses. If I tried to list all the characters I wasn't initially sold on it would be a long list. Ahsoka, Hondo, satine kryze, ezra, zeb, kanan, and man did I hate chopper (and I love star wars droids). by the end every character had not only showed how complex the are the also showed how much they grew ahsoka was young and always had something to say(hence her nickname) but even just 1 season later she was almost wiser than her master. hondo was a pirate and that never changed but you definitely find out there are things he honors almost as much as money like friendship. satine was stuck up but as you saw more and more of her you learned it's only because of how strong-willed she is and how she holds herself and others to a very high standard because the goal she is trying to obtain is very important and almost impossible to achieve, peace for a race of people who have never know it.

It is very well written, yes indeed. It is meant to hit home for those of us that knew the whole backstory of those two, even if some didn't know it, it is such an emotional scene that shows us how to be a decent human. An animated show. Through all the decades of pain and suffering, Ben was able to overcome that and show his enemy compassion and respect. Out of the entirety of Rebels, I think OWK & Maul's scene and Kanan's death have the most powerful moments for they displayed aspects of true Jedi and what the Jedi were supposed to truly stand for. And this is just a small interpretation.

The fact that the duel was so short, was also a huge surprise in star wars history. Most duels are very drawn out, with recent content upping the flashy factor of combat. How simple, calculated, precise, harkens back to Japanese samurai duels where it's over in 2 strikes.
This is the best climax in star wars history

Interesting observation. There may be some possibility that this was inspired by the Zatoichi movie of 2003. In the final duel Zatoichi's opponent is smirking in confidence about the move which he expects Zatoichi to start the duel with but is shocked when at the last moment Zatoichi changes his stance... (The scene is available on youtube).

Maul’s death had a lot of symbols in it but the way I interpreted his final words was that Maul realizes Obi Wan is his brother. In rivalry and in the dark grip of Sidious. He says “We” instead of “I” because Maul knows what happened to Anakin and knows everything Sidious has truly stolen from Obi Wan just as Maul had many things robbed from him by the same hand. Maul and Obi are the ying yang and without Maul being the one to take the dark, Obi Wan may have been clouded as well.

It shows who they are, having Maul dwell on the past to the point of recycling old tactics and Kenobi learning from his past learning from his master and aiming forward into the future. Then he change it to the "wise samuraï" stance from the IV which is more cautious and calm
And finally taking Qui gon's stance which looks even more defensive and focused. I think also for honouring his master (cuz he know this is their last duel).
Maul was too cocky and taught he could win against Obi with the same trick that killed his master which would have been the most evil thing to do. But Obi wan saw trough from the very start and cut right trough his lightsaber.
I think that Obi wan was not only trying to speak to Maul for resolving this conflict without words but also to observe him psychologically. He saw that Maul hasnt changed and that he's still full of hatred and he probably predicted the mindset of Maul and thats also why he took Qui's stance, to warn him "i know what you're up, i warned you".

The duel ( on tatooine ) between Qui-Gon and Maul, didn't come to a definitive end, with a definitive Victor. However years later on tatooine once again. What started with the master against an apprentice, with a master who was once an apprentice.
Dave filoni was more clever than we thought. The duel on tatooine years ago began with Qui-Gon but ended with Obi-Wan Kenobi on tatooine essentially the dual ended where it first began. The first clash in over a thousand years between Jedi and sith end it where it began. It's amazing.

If anyone has ever read the novel about how he was raised and trained, you will understand just how tragic a character Maul truly is. As a child he was tortured and abused by Sidious to a degree no one could fathom. He was locked in a completely lightless room with a horde of flesh-eating beetles and told not to come out unless he had killed all of them possibly being one of the worst things I could imagine happening to a child. So of course he will ALWAYS go to a place of rage and hatred in almost any aspect of his life....especially towards the man who cut him in half.
So for them to even consider making Maul think of atoning or begging forgiveness in his dying breath would have fundamentally changed Maul's entire character. Much like having Han shoot back in self-defense instead of shooting first totally changed Han's character as well.

Maybe Maul knew he was doomed when entering the fight and just wanted the closure and the honor of dying in battle rather than running from he he was seeking for so long. Maul received the most honorable of deaths from the most honorable jedi.

this is why we love star wars television series because they're so emotional and add so much depth
maul was abused and only found love and peace as he was dying, knowing emperor will be defeated

I like it that Obi-Wan even baits Maul by mimicking Qui-Gon's fighting stance

Epic. Didn't realise he tried the same move that killed qui gon :)

Obi-Wan also used the same lightsaber form Qui-Gon used against Maul to get in his head.

Mauls only purpose was to kill qui gon. Once he did that Palpatine left him and he had no other mission. If maul had been found by a jedi early on before Palpatine he would've become one of the greatest duelist that's ever been. Imagine if obi wan or qui gonn found maul and not anakin.
    I love star wars.

I never even noticed that Maul tried the same lightsaber-hilt head smack that he used on Qui-gon until you pointed it out

This scene was a brilliant bit of imagery and story telling. And in the end two of them were very similar and different at the same time maul the relentless attacker and Obi Wan the Master of defence.. Maul burning rage and anger and Obiwan the paragon of calm and stoicism and both of them old men who had lost everything..
