The way Obi wan held him as he was dying.. almost as if he’s his brother. I understand that maul did things to Obi wan but I believe Obi wan forgave him.
Obi Wan is wise. He's looking at a life completely wasted, the man who killed his own master, a relic of a time passed. In this moment he's probably reliving the Clone War, reliving the training and "death" of Anakin, and remembering all the other fallen Jedi.
This is one of the best fight scenes in Star Wars. The fight was psychological. Kenobi was already a master and had new motivations. Maul had the same motivation as when they fought I Naboo. Rage, anger and revenge. Amazing scene.
@@mr.perfect8150 If you look to the character's expressions and eyes, you can see the Phsychological turmoil they were both in. Sometimes a short, silent scene speaks volumes compared to just another "epic fight", and it's what stands out from the other fights
Obi-Wan has to be the purest character in all of Star Wars. After everything Maul has done to him emotionally, killing his master, his love, and many of his friends, he still felt remorse for him. There wasn’t a single look of satisfaction on his face, just pity for this creature the Sith corrupted and used.
Obi-Wan was standing on a pebble and therefore had the high ground by a millimetre. Maul had no chance. Edit: Thanks for the likes I have never had more that 5 likes on my comment
But Obi Wan is the master of the low ground. Here's why: He defeated both maul and grievous by having the low ground. And when he was on mustafar he tempted Anakin by saying he had the high ground. Then Anakin jumped up above Obi Wan, making Obi have the low ground, and then Obi Wan chopped off Anakin's legs. Therefore, Obi Wan is the master of the low ground
My thoughts: maul was actually already dying and was getting very old but his hatred keeps him alive and when he finds out that he's finally getting revenge on the one he hated the most, he felt peace and the darkside no longer kept him alive
@Basic mandalorian then hes not getting old then, but my point still stand, hes barely alive after the duel of the fates but the darkside is still keeping him alive
Maul’s death had a lot of symbols in it but the way I interpreted his final words was that Maul realizes Obi Wan is his brother. In rivalry and in the dark grip of Sidious. He says “We” instead of “I” because Maul knows what happened to Anakin and knows everything Sidious has truly stolen from Obi Wan just as Maul had many things robbed from him by the same hand. Maul and Obi are the ying yang and without Maul being the one to take the dark, Obi Wan may have been clouded as well. Tragically. Maul had to be the carrier of the dark while Kenobi got to be the carrier of light.
There was no relationship. obi wan never gave maul a second thought after he defeated him. Maul thought he could get under obi wan by killing people he loved but failed. What makes obi wan powerful is he is able to successful let go of his feelings unlike Vader. If he was anything like Anakin or maul, he would been turned to the dark side. The very thing that allows obi wan to stay away from the dark side is the very thing that frusterates maul.
@Rusher Ranker7 This has nothing to do with Anakin. This is a personal battle between Kenobi and Maul ever since The Phantom Menace. Why would we need Anakin's lightsaber involved?
Lord of the Sith Vader because like Dave said ep 1 is the duel of the fates which is about anakin and at the end maul dies and ask “is he the chosen one” which he either talking about anakin or baby Luke(which we know anakins the chosen one)so anakin or Luke in the scene would of made it better
with his last breath he found a friend in the man he tried so hard to kill, there was no anger, no hate, only sadness that things didn't end how they could have, how they SHOULD have
True, in a matter of mere seconds they cycle through so much years of history. Their mere presence just splurging (for lack of a better term) the entirety of their lives. It shows who they are, having Maul dwell on the past to the point of recycling old tactics and Kenobi learning from his past learning from his master and aiming forward into the future. It's just so amazing, chefs kiss.

Maul's life could be divided in 3 parts: First being a puppet for the sith. Second is the seek for revenge from Kenobi. Third is the seek for revenge from Sidious. That is a sad life. He was never important to himself. He wasn't the protagonist of his own life.
@@flabio7074 Exactly, there was so much going on in the short amount of time we had. They knew each-other inside and out which lead to a samurai style conclusion.
Was one of the most memorable deaths and sad to see his character finally meet his demise without a final end to revenge against Sideous and not Obi Wan!! 😎👍
Maul realized this long before Palpatine executed Order 66 and moved against the Jedi. Palpatine already moved against Maul and had become an enemy to him by the end of the Clone Wars. Maul simply had no illusions that Kenobi himself was also a pawn in Palpatine's schemes, like he was, only coming from the other side.
The more interesting thing I find in this scene is how he says "us" to which I firmly believe he is including the Jedi, were to also just as much victims as he was. I feel in this moment in a weird way he was as close to selfless as he could be. Wanting his final wish to be for EVERYONE to have their revenge against this supreme evil granted
As much of a "villain" as Maul is (in the grand scheme), there's something endearing about him. Whether it was being found in the sewers by Savage Opres, asking Ahsoka to join him against Sidious, or getting gutted like a fish by Obi Wan. Does that make him a lovable loser?
It is his tragic story that makes him such a good villain. He was stolen, tortured, brainwashed to the point that he didn't remember his real name. He lost everything and eveyone he cared about. He had the potential to be so much greater but Palpatine never trained him as a true sithlord and used him as a weapon. He truly has one of the most tragic stories in all of star wars.
The huge contrast between Maul's terrifying appearance and his beautiful mellifluous speaking voice was such a fascinating choice. How can you hate a person with a voice like that?
when I watched the episode, I ended up with a different impression: Maul was driven by hatred, humiliation, revenge, loss, anger, pain and loneliness, and that he basically had only one person to turn to: Obi Wan.I had the impression that he was visiting Obi Wan to find peace, an end of all suffering. And he did. I believed that this was some way of extended suicide
To me Maul seems at his deepest to be a caring being but decades of torture of solitude made him think that the only way to treat someone is like the sith treated him.
Maul took the lives of Qui-Gon and Satine. In a way, he carried them with him in memory as much as Obi-Wan did, and so when Obi-Wan makes peace with Maul, he is making peace with his enemy but with his master and his lover. It's almost as if he senses that the end of his life is near, finding some sense of closure and leaving only one person to reconcile with...
I love how Obi wan start with his iconic "two finger, come at me" stance from the III Then he change it to the "wise samuraï" stance from the IV which is more cautious and calm And finally taking Qui gon's stance which looks even more defensive and focused. I think also for honouring his master (cuz he know this is their last duel). Maul was too cocky and taught he could win against Obi with the same trick that killed his master which would have been the most evil thing to do. But Obi wan saw trough from the very start and cut right trough his lightsaber. I think that Obi wan was not only trying to speak to Maul for resolving this conflict without words but also to observe him psychologically. He saw that Maul hasnt changed and that he's still full of hatred and he probably predicted the mindset of Maul and thats also why he took Qui's stance, to warn him "i know what you're up, i warned you".
I don't think when Maul asks "Is he is the chosen one?", that he was referring to Luke but most likely to Darth Vader and that HE (Vader) will avenge them. In Which Vader does kill Sidious to save Luke but at the same time, without him knowing it, he was avenging Maul, the jedi and others hurt by Palpatine.
No, he is referring to Luke, because Obi-Wan had given up on Anakin and fully believed in Luke to destroy the Sith. The writers and Lucasfilm staff have confirmed that it was only Obi-Wan's opinion though, because canon lore states unequivocally that it was Anakin who was the chosen one.
TheWarner213 you got it anakin is the chosen one and before the new Star Wars films which I don’t even consider canon and never will anakin did bring peace to galaxy by literally destroying the sith (himself and palp) and Luke was more of the pawn to get anakin to restore balance in the universe
I want to say this... before the fight Maul came to the conclusion that Obi Wan was protecting someone, Luke. I believe that is what prompted Obi Wan to have to duel Maul. At least it could be a reference to Luke in the end, even if Vader is said to be the Chosen One, as he asked if he was the Chosen One.
Can always stop and think about it I just realized something very important to this duel. Back in The phantom menace. The duel ( on tatooine ) between Qui-Gon and Maul, didn't come to a definitive end, with a definitive Victor. However years later on tatooine once again. What started with the master against an apprentice, with a master who was once an apprentice. Dave filoni was more clever than we thought. The duel on tatooine years ago began with Qui-Gon but ended with Obi-Wan Kenobi on tatooine essentially the dual ended where it first began. The first clash in over a thousand years between Jedi and sith end it where it began. It's amazing.
If anyone has ever read the novel about how he was raised and trained, you will understand just how tragic a character Maul truly is. As a child he was tortured and abused by Sidious to a degree no one could fathom. He was locked in a completely lightless room with a horde of flesh-eating beetles and told not to come out unless he had killed all of them possibly being one of the worst things I could imagine happening to a child. So of course he will ALWAYS go to a place of rage and hatred in almost any aspect of his life....especially towards the man who cut him in half. So for them to even consider making Maul think of atoning or begging forgiveness in his dying breath would have fundamentally changed Maul's entire character. Much like having Han shoot back in self-defense instead of shooting first totally changed Han's character as well.
Now from knowing the fights of one who is far as an savage beast who can't let go of the past by one Warrior whom took his precious power with darkness but to Kenobi he is far balanced by this is only how much Kenobi seeing all by his master, lover, and even Anakin lost by the darkness of Sidious.
Maul’s death was so sad and tragic. Old age is really what took him and Obi Wan took him out of his misery. Maul was so clever. His end was honorable despite his sad life story.
Perhaps Maul's use of the same technique that was used to kill Qui Gon was more symbolic than anything. It might be something like "And i shall end this in the same way that it truly began." Maybe Maul knew he was doomed when entering the fight and just wanted the closure and the honor of dying in battle rather than running from he he was seeking for so long. His life would have been wasted from his point of view to some sense. Almost like, "I have spent so long seeking revenge against Kenobi since i cannot take my revenge against Sidious that running from my fate dishonor all that i have achieved amd worked towards."
I feel like Maul got his revenge when he killed Obi-Wans love interest on mandalor...although you cod see the sick and twisted satisfaction on mauls face when he achieved it, I guess it wasn't enough for him which ended up being his downfall. I'm glad that I heard that Maul knew he would eventually have his revenge against sideous even if it wasn't by his own hands. Although Mauls story is sad and tragic, at least he can rest in peace knowing that he will eventually have his revenge on Sideous
I really enjoy the way obi won was ready for mails attacking starting out in his comfort of a form 3 stance but switching to a different one in preparation of mails sequencd
It’s sad that Maul said luke was the one to “Avenge us” even though this will not happen because the sequels wanted to bring back the emperor. it was rey who REALLY kills the emperor at the end. though Luke did not kill the emperor directly his “death” had something to do with him. (vader’s sacrifice) Vader’s sacrifice was for nothing. And luke doesn’t avenge maul or obi wan (directly or indirectly) because of the sequels. shame
That is true if you take in consider the sequels. Since I don't, that is not true. The sequels never existed, so I still believe that Anakin is the chosen one.
The way I see it, Luke was the catalyst for everything that happened, no matter what. Without him, Vader stays...Vader; the Emperor stays the Emperor; and Rey never exists. The identity of the person that ultimately "killed" Palpatine is immaterial in that sense.
The Sequel trilogy is such a mess. I honestly feel like bringing Palpatine back was a last minute decision. This trilogy should have been written in entirety before the first scene ever filmed, but it wasn't. It was poorly managed, poorly written, and poorly executed. A true blight on the franchise.
Interesting that the two had fought each other so long and probably knew each other better, in many ways, than anyone else, that they were sort of companions. Not friends, by any means, but there was a knowledge of each other that was as intimate as friendship even as they tried to kill each other.
I think maul wasn't completely focused on revenge against obi wan in his final breath which is a change in character Maul realized that the only difference between himself and obi wan was that obi hasn't given up,hope Other than that both of their lives were ruined by palpy which is why he says that Luke will avenge us In his final moments maul wasn't angry,he learned the art of letting go
I found it to be a profound mom and heart breaking. I think in Mauls last moments he sees’s kenobi not as an enemy but a old friend. I cry every time I watch this.
As a life-long martial artist, this duel comes off as a true duel of masters. Real fights between true masters end very quickly, as one of the two is usually able to pull off a technique they have practiced thousands of times. What a great scene.
I think what Guilliman said to Angron in the novel "Betrayer" applies to Maul in this scene. Like Angron, Maul was still "Enslaved by the past, blind to the future. Too hateful to learn. Too spiteful to prosper."
'He will avenge us' ive always kind of considered this as Maul acknowledging that Luke will bring justice/vengeance to Sidious for not just Maul, because he no longer considered himself a sith but to Obi-Wan and the jedi, because Maul considered Obi-Wan around this time to be kind of a brother like figure
"Obi-Wan around this time to be kind of a brother like figure" That's a bit of a stretch. This is the guy who killed his master and girlfriend, and spent his entire life trying to make him suffer.
this is why we love star wars television series because they're so emotional and add so much depth maul was abused and only found love and peace as he was dying, knowing emperor will be defeated
Mauls only purpose was to kill qui gon. Once he did that Palpatine left him and he had no other mission. If maul had been found by a jedi early on before Palpatine he would've become one of the greatest duelist that's ever been. Imagine if obi wan or qui gonn found maul and not anakin. I love star wars.
This scene was a brilliant bit of imagery and story telling. And in the end two of them were very similar and different at the same time maul the relentless attacker and Obi Wan the Master of defence.. Maul burning rage and anger and Obiwan the paragon of calm and stoicism and both of them old men who had lost everything..
Y'all notice how Maul was in the same position as Qui-Gon Jinn in Obi-Wan's arms?

The way Obi wan held him as he was dying.. almost as if he’s his brother. I understand that maul did things to Obi wan but I believe Obi wan forgave him.
Obi Wan is wise. He's looking at a life completely wasted, the man who killed his own master, a relic of a time passed.
In this moment he's probably reliving the Clone War, reliving the training and "death" of Anakin, and remembering all the other fallen Jedi.
There is also a weird relationship that builds between life long enemies.
He held Maul in exactly the same position as he held Qui Gon Jin.
I think Obi Wan understands how much of a mind f$&@ the force is.
This is one of the best fight scenes in Star Wars. The fight was psychological. Kenobi was already a master and had new motivations. Maul had the same motivation as when they fought I Naboo. Rage, anger and revenge. Amazing scene.
Lol

Its like a slow wet fart. How any 1 could enjoy that is beyond me.
@@mr.perfect8150 If you look to the character's expressions and eyes, you can see the Phsychological turmoil they were both in.

@@mr.perfect8150 if you can't understand this, than maybe it IS beyond you
Obi-Wan has to be the purest character in all of Star Wars. After everything Maul has done to him emotionally, killing his master, his love, and many of his friends, he still felt remorse for him. There wasn’t a single look of satisfaction on his face, just pity for this creature the Sith corrupted and used.
He’s basically Kakashi
Soooooo true this touched my heart ❤
when Obi-wan closes mauls eyes 2:59 you see them for just a brief second changing from the sith yellow to his natural orangish/red
I never thought much of Maul's death. But I know that is tragic and he will be avenged when Palpatine dies.

My thoughts: maul was actually already dying and was getting very old but his hatred keeps him alive and when he finds out that he's finally getting revenge on the one he hated the most, he felt peace and the darkside no longer kept him alive
i think they said that maul was in his early 20s, like maybe 22 at the most in TPM, so by this time he cant be any older than his early 40s
@Steven Woods but we don't know the average life span of a zabrak, so early 40s could be old for them
@@stevenwoods5787 im pretty sure hes in his 60's but yeah thats still young for a zabrak
@Basic mandalorian then hes not getting old then, but my point still stand, hes barely alive after the duel of the fates but the darkside is still keeping him alive
My take is that his hate could’ve kept him alive after being stabbed by Kenobi. But this time he lets go, and let’s go of life itself
That was one of the best moments in Star Wars
Mac Welch no so sad
@Rusher Ranker7 This has nothing to do with Anakin. This is a personal battle between Kenobi and Maul ever since The Phantom Menace. Why would we need Anakin's lightsaber involved?
Lord of the Sith Vader because like Dave said ep 1 is the duel of the fates which is about anakin and at the end maul dies and ask “is he the chosen one” which he either talking about anakin or baby Luke(which we know anakins the chosen one)so anakin or Luke in the scene would of made it better
@@manmadetunao2597 True, but still. It's better that it is between Maul and Kenobi. Mention of Luke is still good enough.

In one scene that lasted just a few mins the Rebels episode "Twin Suns" told a better story than all of the sequel trilogy combined.
Yes, it did.
Well rebels tells pretty good story's if u ignore 90% of all the stupid shit happening

I never noticed that he tried to use the move he used on Qui Gon Jinn. Good breakdown of the scene thumbs up!!
Obi-Wan also used the same lightsaber form Qui-Gon used against Maul to get in his head.

Dave Filoni is the one who said it dude. This guy’s stealing credit.
I love how much throughout they’re entire story obi wan and maul respected each other even tho they’re like sworn enemies
with his last breath he found a friend in the man he tried so hard to kill, there was no anger, no hate, only sadness that things didn't end how they could have, how they SHOULD have
This scene can only be appreciated by true fans that understand it.

CooperAJ thats not gate keeping really because if you’re a regular fan and see this you not gonna read intill to it that much but if you’re a “true”,”hardcore” fan you gonna look into it way more and that’s not the fault of true fan for knowing the lore and meaning that the regular fan won’t take the time to learn 🥱
@@cooperajcpr it is gatekeeping sure, but i think this is time its justified because im pretty sure newer fans really will feel underwhelmed by this scene not knowing their history but hardcore fans already know their history
Maul's life could be divided in 3 parts:
First being a puppet for the sith.
Second is the seek for revenge from Kenobi.
Third is the seek for revenge from Sidious.
That is a sad life. He was never important to himself. He wasn't the protagonist of his own life.
He always wanted revenge against Sidious but now he lost his hate for Kenobi
Sure you didn't mean 2? I'll see myself out.
I’d like but it’s at 69
Obi-Wan most likely replayed his masters death countless times in his mind and visualized what could have been done differently

True. A beautiful moment.
It’s tragic because Maul could finally rest, and that he understood that his hatred wasn’t for Kenobi, but because he was robbed of his life

3:05 that transition from fighting Obi-Wan to Savage was perfect
“He will avenge us” at that moment he knew they were all pawns
Maul realized this long before Palpatine executed Order 66 and moved against the Jedi. Palpatine already moved against Maul and had become an enemy to him by the end of the Clone Wars. Maul simply had no illusions that Kenobi himself was also a pawn in Palpatine's schemes, like he was, only coming from the other side.
Haven't watched you for a long time and your quality has increased a lot. Very good channel!
Maul's death was tragic only for one reason.
HE NEVER MASTERED THE HIGH GROUND.

@@Fit_soldier you lost because you ditch Mother Talisan's alpha tall robotic legs for mandalore's beta short robotic legs
Neither did Obi Wan... it was evenly matched...
He literally had the high ground in PM.
And that was when the last significant person of Obi-Wan’s old life faded away…
Obi-Wan, in the end, gives Maul the respect and compassion that Maul never received by those who had authority over him.
Interestingly Maul seems to let go of his hatred of Obi Wan as he is dying.
@@leemercury3754 agreed, well said.
when I watched the episode, I ended up with a different impression: Maul was driven by hatred, humiliation, revenge, loss, anger, pain and loneliness, and that he basically had only one person to turn to: Obi Wan.I had the impression that he was visiting Obi Wan to find peace, an end of all suffering. And he did. I believed that this was some way of extended suicide
To me Maul seems at his deepest to be a caring being but decades of torture of solitude made him think that the only way to treat someone is like the sith treated him.
StupendousWave, thank you for the quality content my friend, so glad i have you. May the Force be with You.
I would love to see an alternate timeline where Maul seeks out Kenobi for peace and understanding, letting go of vengeance and the dark side
The fact he gives up because the fight goes exactly the same as when he was cut in half is amazing
I love how Obi wan start with his iconic "two finger, come at me" stance from the III
Then he change it to the "wise samuraï" stance from the IV which is more cautious and calm
And finally taking Qui gon's stance which looks even more defensive and focused.
Crazy to think that the best pure Star Wars moment that has been produced since Disney took over was this scene. Gives me chills every time I watch it
I don't think when Maul asks "Is he is the chosen one?", that he was referring to Luke but most likely to Darth Vader and that HE (Vader) will avenge them.
@@thewarner2139 no Rey is the chosen one lmao, jk
That duel was the scene that made Kenobi my favorite Jedi.
The only person I've seen Maul beg and plead to was sidious.
Maul killed Obi wans Master (Qui Gon) and his first love(Satine ), but he still showed him respect in the end. The best jedi imo
Darth Maul is my favourite Star Wars character

What I saw darth maul dying in Obi-Wan's arms I couldn't help but think to myself may you find the peace in death that you could never find in life.
I felt sorry for maul. He never moved beyond revenge
In a way he's an echo of the Jedi before the purge.
They remained stagnant and complacent
Now from knowing the fights of one who is far as an savage beast who can't let go of the past by one Warrior whom took his precious power with darkness but to Kenobi he is far balanced by this is only how much Kenobi seeing all by his master, lover, and even Anakin lost by the darkness of Sidious.
Of all the Star Wars silliness. This gets it so right! It’s beautiful.
Maul’s death was so sad and tragic. Old age is really what took him and Obi Wan took him out of his misery. Maul was so clever. His end was honorable despite his sad life story.
My favorite part about this scene is how they switch positions before they even clash. And even adjusting their footing and stances.
I thought this was the most touching scene in all of Star Wars. I love both characters but my heart broke for Maul.
Well Maul did get his revenge on Sideous after all when Anakin threw him down the Reactor shaft near the end of Return of the Jedi.
I’ve always felt bad for Maul, abandoned by a Master he always wanted to please.
Can we PLEASE have part 3 of ''what if qui gon jinn trained anakin''.
I really enjoy the way obi won was ready for mails attacking starting out in his comfort of a form 3 stance but switching to a different one in preparation of mails sequencd
Imagine Obi Wan if would force heal Maul to give him a second chance.
I literally watched this scene last night, I almost shed a tear. I told my mate I just witnessed the most moving Star Wars moment I’ve witnessed
The sequels don't matter anyways. It's a big budget terrible fan fiction. Not canon
Interesting that the two had fought each other so long and probably knew each other better, in many ways, than anyone else, that they were sort of companions. Not friends, by any means, but there was a knowledge of each other that was as intimate as friendship even as they tried to kill each other.
Maul is one of my favorite characters.
I think maul wasn't completely focused on revenge against obi wan in his final breath which is a change in character
Maul realized that the only difference between himself and obi wan was that obi hasn't given up,hope
Other than that both of their lives were ruined by palpy which is why he says that Luke will avenge us
In his final moments maul wasn't angry,he learned the art of letting go
Originally maul was only good for having two blades in tpm but then he became better through clone wars and rebels
If only they listened to Maul in the clone wars. He told Ahsoka what was up and she refused to believe it.
Hello there
General Kenobi
You are a bold one
Kill him
Mauls face when Obi-Wan switches to Qui-Gon's stance is unreal
STUPENDOUS
I half-expected Obi-Wan to say "Find peace in The Force, old friend"
Except Maul was never Obi-Wan's friend
It was great to hear Filoni say so many things in this video! The last thing Filoni said about Maul was totally unexpected.
I found it to be a profound mom and heart breaking. I think in Mauls last moments he sees’s kenobi not as an enemy but a old friend. I cry every time I watch this.
Obi Wan gave him purpose.
It was the most sad story of all the characters. His death is truly sad
Been a sub for like 4-6 years now bby love the content
'He will avenge us' ive always kind of considered this as Maul acknowledging that Luke will bring justice/vengeance to Sidious for not just Maul, because he no longer considered himself a sith but to Obi-Wan and the jedi, because Maul considered Obi-Wan around this time to be kind of a brother like figure
"Obi-Wan around this time to be kind of a brother like figure"
That's a bit of a stretch. This is the guy who killed his master and girlfriend, and spent his entire life trying to make him suffer.
I love how Kenobi uses his original stance, but then switches to Qui Gons stance baiting maul
Maul received the most honorable of deaths from the most honorable jedi.
this is why we love star wars television series because they're so emotional and add so much depth
maul was abused and only found love and peace as he was dying, knowing emperor will be defeated
this battle was soo intense but then so calm at the same time
I like it that Obi-Wan even baits Maul by mimicking Qui-Gon's fighting stance
Epic. Didn't realise he tried the same move that killed qui gon :)
Obi-Wan also used the same lightsaber form Qui-Gon used against Maul to get in his head.
I never even noticed that Maul tried the same lightsaber-hilt head smack that he used on Qui-gon until you pointed it out
This scene was a brilliant bit of imagery and story telling. And in the end two of them were very similar and different at the same time maul the relentless attacker and Obi Wan the Master of defence.. Maul burning rage and anger and Obiwan the paragon of calm and stoicism and both of them old men who had lost everything..
