I used the Rob Robinette master volume mod on my Weber 5E3 kit build. I decided to remove it after finding no real advantage in it's use. You could lower the master volume and crank up the original volume looking for more breakup at a lower volume, but the effect was quite drab, not at all what I was looking for. I also added the Feedback Switch Mod, this gives you three different choices of negative feedback from the output transformer, using a SPDT ON-Off-ON switch , IN: normal with cathode bypass cap on, Center: Cathode bypass cap off, Out: Feedback on & Bypass cap off. I actually like the stock setting best, but I can see where the different tones might come in handy...
It's a good idea and I for one am pleased to know why things work even if I don't do the mods. I just use a compressor with vol and tone for low volume home use. Cool work keeo it coming.
Would have been nice to hear the sound when you change the master a little at a time. It seems where you turned it down too, would be the lowest anyone would need. Would like to hear a couple in-between that and full. I would like to roll on a little more distortion to my taste. Thanks for the video.
*That tool is only rated at 440V Max* so I wouldn't be using that, personally. Amazon has 1000v capable discharge tools that have a display to actually show you how much voltage is being measured currently. There's no flashing LED to miss. Just a screen and a number.
From about 10:30 onwards, when listening on headphones and especially my phone's speaker, I noticed a feint "white noise" type rustling sound as each note decayed. Would you know what that's caused by, and can it be eliminated?
@@lowheadroom OK. Thanks for the explanation. Interestingly, I also noticed the exact same noise on several tracks of the album "The Jimi Hendrix Concerts". I always wondered where the noise originated from, so now I know 🙂

I'm wondering if I can turn my 5e3 up to the sweet spot but still lower overall volume with Master volume. Would this mod do that?
Awesome content. Keep this great content coming

really cool video!! 1 question,, what if you put a volume control in line with your speaker leads?? would that work?

Check out my recent cascaded gain mod video if you like natural tube gain

@@lowheadroom That link was to the gain mod.
Why would anyone want a master v on a 5e3 tweed amp? The amp already has enough gain as designed to sound anyway one would want after mixdown.
So you can crank the light preamp and get gain at bedroom levels instead of pissing your wife off :)

No shielded wire ?
Would post pi be better?
not in this instance because the 5e3 doesn't utilize the long-tail pair PI which is where the PPIV MV location would have the most affect!

I've experimented with several 5E3 MV mods both pre and post PI and to my ears they all sound like garbage.
Only one of mine sounds not fizzy
I think the trick is shielded cable
@@lowheadroom I did use shielded cable on the MV I used, interference noise was not the issue, crappy tone was...

It’s likely an oscillation caused by my lack of using shielded cable

The Mission Amps Volume Tone mod is more useful
In what way
Lol you have bleeding resistors you will never get a shock
