- Tick bites are common. There is great concern for Lyme Disease from tick bites, especially in certain parts of the US. This tick is Ixodes pacificus, the species of tick that carries Lyme Disease.
Antibiotic treatment based on tick bite alone is inappropriate.
It usually takes 2-3 days of a tick feeding to be able to contract Lyme Disease from an infected tick. Initial symptoms usually include flu-like symptoms and can be accompanied by an enlarging red ring rash on the skin called erythema migrans chronicum.
Joint aches also often occur early in the illness when treatment is much more successful. Later symptoms can include neurological or cardiac effects 3 weeks or later after infection. The disease is harder to treat in the later stages.

I hope she is disease free. My prayers are with her. What a beautiful patient
They're looking out for Lyme, at least. If she has it they'll be able to detect and treat it right away, which will give her the best chance of a good outcome.
What the hell is this physician doing?! You're supposed to remove it with tweezers so you remove the damn thing INTACT and you do NOT squeeze anything from its innards back into the body of the patient! Or you do not do what this moron did and RIP the tick in half and risk not being able to remove the head of the tick. GOOD GRIEF!!

I had a tick in the exact same spot, huge 🎯, & positive for lyme, antibiotics & then 5 months later, 21 days of infusions. No problems since👍🏽
I'm super impressed with how calm Jan was. You've got some terrific patients Dr. V! Back in the 70's, we'd gone to a family reunion at the lake, I was 9 or 10. Cabins with beds for grown-ups, we kids used our sleeping bags. Everyone slept 1st night no issues. Next day I was reading a book, lounging on bed my parents had slept in. Relaxing until I found a bug crawling on me...which turned out to be a tick. My mom tore sheets off the bed, that mattress was covered in ticks. GAAA!!! I still shudder thinking about it.

Thanks! Now I'm itchy as a mofo!!

My son suffered a Tick bite when holidaying in Orlando - he came home to the UK and due to the complications has never been able to work since; take full precautions!!
wow, everything about this is awful. doctor removed the tick by the body. you're supposed to remove it as close to the head as possible so you're not squeezing borrelia into the person's body. additionally, you would want to start abx asap presuming infection because Lyme is a time-sensitive disease which gets harder to treat the longer you wait. only 10% of those infected develop the bulls-eye rash. this is why Lyme is such a huge issue and goes under treated because doctors instead of prescribing abx right away which are cheap to produce instead wait until it's too late.
Welp that person is gonna be dead in either weeks or months.
Yap, every dog owner know this 😊
You are not supposed to squeeze the bug with tools, you comb/twist it out with a tick removal tool so you do not squeeze bug juice into the wound.

This doctor is wonderful, kind and stays calm so the patient does also.
I do hate ticks because of the diseases that can come from their bite. I pray this wonderful lady had no long term disease due to this tick.
Perfect removal Dr Vaughan. These little critters make my flesh crawl. Here in the UK I have never come across a tick, even when we had our English Bull Terriers and Dobermans and we would go for long walks in the countryside. I know there are ticks in this country but I don't know what type. They make my skin crawl especially knowing that they can transmit a horrid illness.
It is so good to hear from you again, Francesca. It has been too long since we have read your Welsh accent.
No ticks yet? Why not?? Poor girl, you seem like a nice person, ticks should love you!
iniohos2 oh please don't wish that on me 😂😂😂
That's why you get tons of diseases from ticks. Squeezing them when still attached at your body is a terrible idea.
this video is good example how not to remove ticks.....not educated doctor....
cyromartinsbicudo it’s dead
vori thanks I didn’t know that
How would you do it otherwise?
I did that once bc I didn’t know what a tick was so I squeezed it and pulled out but it didn’t hurt at all and I didn’t get a disease. THAT DOES NOT MEAN IT IS OK TO PULL IT OUT, I REPEAT DO NOT PULL OUT THE TICK. And also it won’t die if u squish it lmao u have to burn it to death or something, cuz we had to burn it with a lighter
Any test results yet?
I think it’s great this nice lady was calm. I would say many people would have been wigging out going thru this process! Thanks for the video.
I’m itchy now. Why did i watch this 😩😩
Me too! I even slapped my neck because i felt like something bit me!

Hello
I want us to have some private conversation.
I’m going to send you my email address so we can chat
When I remove them from myself I put alcohol on the bite before and after pulling them, followed by antibiotic ointment. I'm not a doc but it makes me feel safer to do it.
Try using fine right angle tweezers and grab the head. This reduces the odds of losing the head and helps prevent forcing contents of tick into the wound. I agree with slow, steadily increasing traction.
Zecken haben keinen Kopf.
@@p.b.209 "Head" is the common term used to describe the embedded mouthparts.
In the 60’s my grandma used a farm chemical that they no longer sell. She put a few drops on the tick and they always let go and took off running! Unless they were dead of course. The chemical required no license and, as I recall, it was used to store seeds for a longer time.
So glad you got that out! I have a German shepherd called Valentine ♥, hope she checks her pup for ticks too xx
Hello kirsty, how’re you doing?
I found one on me a yr. ago that thing was hurting till I removed it. Thank God I didn’t get sick from it.
I am 21 year old. I removed over 40 ticks from my body in my life. I recently did some test at doctor and apparently everything is alright. I am surprised
Bulunduğunuz şehirden taşınsanız? Böceklerden acayip korkarım. Sonumuz kenelerden olmasın
I heard if you grap the tick by the abdomen and squeeze it can make the tick spit out while attached and that can push an infection into you
You are correct. There's an inexpensive plastic ticks removal tool that has a small slit to remove ticks without squeezing the abdomen.
My son when he was 12 got bit by a deer tick.
It started like a raised hive. Then started to get a circle of raised hive like... like a dart board. Went on adult dose of antibiotics and was in to see a specialist then next day.
Tick had bit and left. Took about 2 months of meds.
Vermont hands out little tick-removal spoons, which I used on my cousin this morning. Works like a charm.
I believe that no follow-up was posted because the patient did not authorize it. It falls under the HIPPA laws concerning medical privacy.
pdh29073 how do you know?
My wife was bitten by a tick in Colorado and got Limes disease. It caused many painful problems.
I had sepsis twice from tick bites. So sick. I'm glad she didn't have the bullet rash. Those big black ones often fall down from trees into the hair. That would be my guess. Even after shampooing at night I run my hands over my scalp and have still found them. It's like removing a wire from concrete. It takes a while for Lyme to show up and sometimes the first test will be negative. This reminds me to get one of those removal tools that the vets use before the weather warms up.
I think you left some of its proboscis still in the wound.
I agree!
@@lorrainebartow1762 Me too
I got bit by a tick and thought it was an easy removal, except the wound wouldn't heal. Jerk left a tiny part of his mandible behind, I ended up having to have a minor surgery to remove the mandible and surrounding skin. Still have the scar.
I hope the lady is ok. The only thing I knew about tick was to bring them out gingerly, and the threat of lyme disease. Good luck 🤞 dear.

Very interesting video. Thank you ,to you and your patient, Jan, for sharing.
the actual video we all want to watch starts at 1:28 folks.
Oh wow! I didn't know they would burrow into and under your skin! 😳
Correct me if I'm wrong aren't you supposed to slow twist the tick whilst pulling it so there's less risk of the head, which is barrier under the skin by the way, braking off the body and remaining hooked in the skin?
No don't twist
Never twist
Woah I go away for a couple months and your channel has exploded! Congrats doctor!
You should try an O'tom tick twister, less chance of forcing there tic to eject into the surface due to compression.
Thank you very much for sharing..
Nice video!
Yikes....poor lady. Ticks give me the HeeBee JeeBees even in videos!
By grasping the body aren't you afraid that you will reverse inject fluids from the tick?
no

I lived near the woods all my life and my grandma taught me to never just pull the tick slowly. You have to rotate it counterclockwise while grabing on to it firmly and pulling. That's how I used to get all those ticks out of my dogs' skins... xd this looked a bit slopy to me
But he is a doctor

DONT ROTATE IT
Rotate it if you want to break it and leave some of it inside you.
Great information today. Thank you. I ALWAYS watch your blog's.
I was diagnosed with a Tick Fever.
Please if you pull one off from your body. Take it to you Doctor.
I had no idea what was happening to me. Hallucinations were so freaking bad. Fever, cotton mouth.
You want to get treatment asap. There's more than what I described.
Why is he not using tweezers? The way he extracted it, exerted un-needed pressure on the tick body.
Because the pressure on the tick has no bearing. Ticks, like all organisms, have sphincters that prevent fluid flowing in opposite directions. Since it’s so small it has zero bearing on safe removal.
@@matthewwhitt9398 yes, they have, but they are designes to handle pressures that the tick itself generate and NOT the type of pressure exerted by a human. 🤦♂️
Eivind Krey Hanssen you’re thinking of only hydrostatic pressure and not the pressure exerted against the canal walls. They will burst from the pressure before any fluid could ever back flow into the host. Using forceps is the accepted way to remove a tick in the clinical setting. We do this routinely in the ER without complications.
🤦♂️
Hello Dr., This is one very informative video. Thank you.
May I ask you please do ticks leave holes with little blood clot inside? I found something on my leg few years ago and I squeezed it and it got little something black from it looking like dried blood. But it is still having this black thing in and can't be removed. It's tiny but it's not black head. The thing is I dismissed it for years but since 2015 something strange happened to my body and I became fatigued overnight and it is still ongoing. A year later also I lost my voice and got disphagia which gradually got better after 2 years and eventually resolved. Energy hasn't though and I started having headaches, occasional dizziness, tingling body and sinus problems too. Could it have been a tick and disease carrying one? I walked a lot at the time including in grassy areas. I've never known about Lyme until recently. Thank you.
Сколько стоит эта операция в вашей стране?
В России это делают бесплатно.
Maybe a proper removal. Some may "twist" while pulling it out and thats wrong. Some thicks saliva or body fluids will burst out if you twist while pinching it. The proper removal is by using thread.
Its odd that its been attached to her for so long but doesnt look all huge like they do when they are fed... The head was definitely left inside her but its dead so meh.
It was dead. And it looks like he got the idea..he shows a microscope picture at the end of video..looks like it came out intact
Amazing doc you are wonderful
Why are live ticks easier to remove I found 4 on me just walking around on my they was redish brown with black stripes
My eyes: looks straight into the tick
O q ouvi dizer é q se deve encostar algo quente (metal fino c/ a ponta aquecida) e o próprio inseto se afasta, saindo sozinho!
Puxando, ele deixa o “ferrão “ q provocará coceira por muito tempo!
This is just elementary...a pupil can just remove a tick in him...no drama, exageration needed or whatever medical term needed

It makes me more uncomfortable that he touched a tick with no gloves on than the actual removal
What about the other half of it, can you get sick if only half comes out
Dead tick. As opposed to live tick. What! How on earth did it die in there? Is this normal?
Great Doctor
Lady you should brush and clean your dog after a walk in the woods. Clean their paws brush their fur and lean their ears you'll never know what they bring back home after a long walk
This doctor is so bright.. he could have used more precise tweezers to grab it by the mouth, not grab it from the body.
My dog picked them up in the lake District UK. We must have missed a couple as a week later saw a long line of babies coming from near where he sits in kitchen. Checked house and they were everywhere despite vet being adamant couldn't happen. Changed her mind when took a dead one for her to see. Strong flea spray got them ...yuch
I removed with my hands, its still i have a problem?
Great video! Good luck Jan 😊

I've found a Qtip with rubbing alcohol on it will make the tick let go ( hard to breath).
completely took this out wrong! you grab at the base and twist so the head comes out to!

They always break and the head is stuck. Then what?
Once she starts getting any symptoms she’s done she’s got it that’s why you prescribed 21 days to prepare I’m getting it i’m sorry for writing over and over but I’ve had this is 2008 and I got BS all the time it’s like they want you to get it so you got to keep coming back pay them that’s how I feel about medical care doctors all doctors are not like that but very seldom
By my own experience to take a tick out you might make a torsion to deliver. They are more dangerous than most of people think. They are Lyme disease vector. May this madame be ok!!
Does she have Lyme?
Does anyone know why the right side of her face was twitching?
I think there still some in there.
My doctor made small cut and stitched it.

You are right about a stedy pull ,but you need to get the body at the base of neck.
If you don't the tick will regurgitate and expell the bacteria in the person, or pet.

I have a friend that had to get a dear tick cut out of her ear because it had a layer of skin that healed over it.
Oh my is she okay?

has anyone had experience with a gel use to surround the tick body so it has to extract itself to breathe, since they breathe thru the skin also? we had children each one had a tick and wouldnt let us extract the tick, we put kayla gel onto the tick making sure it was covered then all was needed was to wipe it off. most of them were dead an not moving.
My Mother used to use Vicks Vaporub. The ticks hated the smell, and the burn from the menthol, and would back out soon.
Any type of oil works, I prefer sweet oil (also good for earache) or olive oil, I've even seen my dad use motor oil in a pinch! Cover the tick completely with it and it can't breathe...5-10 minutes it will detach itself,, I don't understand why a DR would pull one out and risk leaving the head or part of it in a patient for a possible infection.🤔
Love these videos
i had a tick bite at my neck before. this tick is big in size. i did pull it out aftr few day it stuck into my skin. when i pull them out, the mouth part of it stuck into my skin and i suffered infection for nearly 2 years bfr of the infection.
I lived in a scrubby area that meant ticks. We would put a drop of pure tea tree oil on them and they die or let go . Never squeeze a tick
I'm never going to the woods again
Please let me know if she's ok
Why am i feel itchy on my neck after watching this...
I have pulled many ticks off of me. I hate them and they make the spot they were at, itch. I jut grab them and pull them off or get tweezers and pull them off. I then drop them on a bottle or dish of alcahol until I see they are dead. I have never found a dead one on me. I would want to know why it was dead. The only time I get dead ones off my dogs, is when they have the frontline or something similar on them.
I have never seen a reaction. to a tick like that. do hope it isn't serious
This is a very common appearance. It resolves.
I have removed several ticks over the years. Sure wouldn't go to the doctor.
