  • Tick bites are common. There is great concern for Lyme Disease from tick bites, especially in certain parts of the US. This tick is Ixodes pacificus, the species of tick that carries Lyme Disease.
Antibiotic treatment based on tick bite alone is inappropriate.
It usually takes 2-3 days of a tick feeding to be able to contract Lyme Disease from an infected tick. Initial symptoms usually include flu-like symptoms and can be accompanied by an enlarging red ring rash on the skin called erythema migrans chronicum.
Joint aches also often occur early in the illness when treatment is much more successful. Later symptoms can include neurological or cardiac effects 3 weeks or later after infection. The disease is harder to treat in the later stages.

I'm super impressed with how calm Jan was. You've got some terrific patients Dr. V! Back in the 70's, we'd gone to a family reunion at the lake, I was 9 or 10. Cabins with beds for grown-ups, we kids used our sleeping bags. Everyone slept 1st night no issues. Next day I was reading a book, lounging on bed my parents had slept in. Relaxing until I found a bug crawling on me...which turned out to be a tick. My mom tore sheets off the bed, that mattress was covered in ticks. GAAA!!! I still shudder thinking about it.

wow, everything about this is awful. doctor removed the tick by the body. you're supposed to remove it as close to the head as possible so you're not squeezing borrelia into the person's body. additionally, you would want to start abx asap presuming infection because Lyme is a time-sensitive disease which gets harder to treat the longer you wait. only 10% of those infected develop the bulls-eye rash. this is why Lyme is such a huge issue and goes under treated because doctors instead of prescribing abx right away which are cheap to produce instead wait until it's too late.

Here in the UK I have never come across a tick, even when we had our English Bull Terriers and Dobermans and we would go for long walks in the countryside. I had sepsis twice from tick bites. So sick. I'm glad she didn't have the bullet rash. Those big black ones often fall down from trees into the hair. That would be my guess. Even after shampooing at night I run my hands over my scalp and have still found them. It's like removing a wire from concrete. It takes a while for Lyme to show up and sometimes the first test will be negative. This reminds me to get one of those removal tools that the vets use before the weather warms up.

Because the pressure on the tick has no bearing. Ticks, like all organisms, have sphincters that prevent fluid flowing in opposite directions. Since it’s so small it has zero bearing on safe removal.

Hello Dr., This is one very informative video. Thank you.
May I ask you please do ticks leave holes with little blood clot inside? I found something on my leg few years ago and I squeezed it and it got little something black from it looking like dried blood. But it is still having this black thing in and can't be removed. It's tiny but it's not black head. The thing is I dismissed it for years but since 2015 something strange happened to my body and I became fatigued overnight and it is still ongoing. A year later also I lost my voice and got disphagia which gradually got better after 2 years and eventually resolved. Energy hasn't though and I started having headaches, occasional dizziness, tingling body and sinus problems too. Could it have been a tick and disease carrying one? I walked a lot at the time including in grassy areas. I've never known about Lyme until recently. Thank you.

By my own experience to take a tick out you might make a torsion to deliver. They are more dangerous than most of people think. They are Lyme disease vector. May this madame be ok!!

You are right about a stedy pull ,but you need to get the body at the base of neck.
If you don't the tick will regurgitate and expell the bacteria in the person, or pet.
The hot frame will make it do the same..
    But great job doctor....♡♡♡♡♥︎♥︎♡♥︎♡♥︎♡♡♡

has anyone had experience with a gel use to surround the tick body so it has to extract itself to breathe, since they breathe thru the skin also? we had children each one had a tick and wouldnt let us extract the tick, we put kayla gel onto the tick making sure it was covered then all was needed was to wipe it off. most of them were dead an not moving.

My Mother used to use Vicks Vaporub. The ticks hated the smell, and the burn from the menthol, and would back out soon.

Any type of oil works, I prefer sweet oil (also good for earache) or olive oil, I've even seen my dad use motor oil in a pinch! Cover the tick completely with it and it can't breathe...5-10 minutes it will detach itself,, I don't understand why a DR would pull one out and risk leaving the head or part of it in a patient for a possible infection.🤔

I lived in a scrubby area that meant ticks. We would put a drop of pure tea tree oil on them and they die or let go . Never squeeze a tick

I have pulled many ticks off of me. I hate them and they make the spot they were at, itch. I jut grab them and pull them off or get tweezers and pull them off. I then drop them on a bottle or dish of alcahol until I see they are dead. I have never found a dead one on me. I would want to know why it was dead. The only time I get dead ones off my dogs, is when they have the frontline or something similar on them.
