Finn here! The feeling is the same for most of us in November, when it's both cold and dark. Everybody feels like a bear who needs to go to sleep for the winter. 😊 But we learn to just be more forgiving to our selves during that time. You don't have to be energetic all year round. For that part of the year relax, wear warm clothes, eat and drink something yammy, light candles in the evening, take naps, have a daylight lamp by your work station. Soon we'll have some snow, which reflects the light, so it feels a lot better, and the Christmas lights come on, and after the Christmas days are alredy getting longer again. So just for this little bit before Christmas and snow, find your inner bear and hibernate a bit. ❤

One thing I have noticed in these sites about Finland is that visitors never talk about Finnish literature, movies, art, music, etc. If one wants to get a better Finnish experience, they should look into those things. Well, that applies to other countries as well. A thing that has always bothered me about the US is the so-called outgoingness of Americans, and maybe that is true of Australia too. But I was brought up in a Great Lakes region small town largely populated by people of Finnish origin like me. Less was more in talking. Though I never learned Finnish properly, when I visited Finland, people were surprised that I could pronounce place names, food and other daily things so well. i was sort of surprised, but shouldn't have been, that the landscape was so similar to where I was from.
I hate snow and I hate winter, I will never get used to it or find joy in it. I lived in other places for 13 years, and temporarily moved back to Finland 4-5 years ago. In the future I'm hoping to only spends summers in Finland and go further south before the winter arrives. :)
It's my second year here in Finland, after getting married to my Finnish husband and moving in with him. It's definitely an adjustment, and I feel the lethargy the most in the winter as well. Watching this makes me feel hopeful, listening has always been my strong suit vs speaking, it seems that will still be the case even in 5 years I suppose and that's fine. Let's both enjoy our lives in Finland!
Let’s enjoy! Thanks a lot for your comment and you will get used to everything. Us humans are much better at adapting than we think, it just takes some time 😊
If darkness bother you, try switching some of your lights to color temperature 4000K. If you set timer to bed room to turn on 4000K light bit before you need to wake up, it's easier to get up in bright room.
That’s so interesting to hear, as a finn. So why did you move to Finland? Also how old are you? You seem like a really nice person! Ja sä puhut tosi hyvin suomee 👏 i can totally relate to the winter depression 😅
Your Finnish sounds great! Yeah we also get depressed when darkness and coldness comes, but it's the price we pay for the great summers. Christmas brings little joy for us with all the candles. But wait until February, then there will be great, cold and sunny days.
I'm a Finn and the older I get the less I like the winter :D As a kid it's fabulous. As an adult I've gotten really sensitive to the cold. I don't mind the darkness because spring will come but if it gets really cold that sucks for me. I have friends who love it though. If the winter was always snowy and held firm at around -1 to -5 degrees Celsius, I would love it, that kind of winter weather is actually wonderful! But I hate anything colder than -10 C. And I hate it when it thaws and then freezes so it gets icy and slippery, that sucks.
Your Finnish is great! I myself am a Swedish speaking Finn, and I have been working my whole life for my Finnish. Today I am rather sure that my Finnish is OK, the Finns say so too, but one has to remember that I am 79 years old. (!!!) Finnish is a wonderful language, not only because it is so hard but also because it has such a potential for expressing anything that you need to express. Plus that they do it in a very charming way! Humour in Finnish is like nothing else in the world! Lots of Swedish speaking Finns have emigrated to Sweden because they haven´t been able to master the Finnish language. And I remember for ever when I was in Stockholm with a group of 14 year olds, and one of them said: "Imagine! Everything is in Swedish!" It was a treat. But Finland is our homeland, regardless. I am extremely proud of knowing Finnish, it is the second hardest language in the world! And the people is very special! I remember how poor we were after the last war with the Soviet Union - poor and drunk (!) and swearing! - and today we belong to the most successful. In a very short time the Finns have succeeded in taking their place among the most successful peoples of the world. I am very proud.
My sister moved from Finland to Australia ten years ago and it changed her alot so I find it interesting to hear how Finnish culture can change someone who came from Australia. PS. Which country do you think has the better beer? :)
It's much easier to learn Swedish as an English speaking person. Unfortunately, nowadays it's quite hard to come around with just Swedish in Finland, if your not living in Österbotten or Åland (where I live). Officially, Finland is bilingual but not really in reality. It was nice to hear about your own "growing" since you came here. All the Best to you 😄👌

Anyway, the Finnish sounds great, and even I don't fully know how to speak great Finnish, and I was born and raised here, so it is a little difficult.
Don't worry many of us Finns aren't used to out weather either despite being born here. I think it's like living on a foreign planet, there are limits to our adaptation as human beings.

how long did you live in finland before moving to australia, if i may ask? you mentioned having lived away from finland for "most" of your life so i assume you lived here as a child, or? :o
So, it was the other way around. i was born in Australia and lived there until i was 8, then i moved to a few countries in Asia. I ended up moving to Finland when i was 14 for only two years to do some school, then i moved to Hong kong and was there until 2018, then i came to Finland and have been here since lol... super confusing.
Your Finnish is good, a good way to continue fostering it, is to know where you can integrate it into your life, just enough that you can maintain the skill of speech and get better, without diminishing your English. There is only really the stiffness you need to shake off, and you will speak Finnish like a native. If you are intending on living in coastal areas of Finland, as a secondary option you can learn to speak Swedish, it is a constitutionally recognized second government language, GRANTED, there is much less speakers of it in here in Finland. Swedish will be far more easier to learn as a stop gap, if you are finding speaking or learning Finnish difficult. I think you might be trying to suppress certain motions and or muscles to control your tone when you speak Finnish, this most likely is the source of your stiffness when you speak Finnish. Try to find out which muscles exactly you tense up to produce the proper tone of speaking Finnish. I think, maybe a ten minute practice daily of speaking few sentences in Finnish, first slowly, then slowly accelerate after repeating those few sentences, until the times up. Up to you though.
Back in the day I had co- worker who was Canadian Finnish. He spoke perfect Finnish, but if he had to say a word he was not familiar he pronounced it like you would in English. One time he had sick leave and I asked him "What did you have?" "Well I had "Rye bull""... It sound's like "minulla oli rye bull" and that doesn't say anything. Eventually he told me he had diarhea.
for me summertime is just pure torture, I'm allergic to effin _everything_ that's in the air from plants, trees & bugs. I have to take 3 different pills, use eyedrops & nasal sprays and my eyes & nose still just _leak_ allll the time. I also use ADHD & depresso meds that rise my body temperature, so when it's 25-30+ °C it feels like I'm living in a sauna 247. I also have MC1R-gene ("the red head gene") which makes me super sensitive to sun exposure _and_ it also makes me "feel the heat" even more. Sunshine is like my dementor, it sucks the life & happiness out of me (even in winter), dunno if it's because of the MC1R-gene or I'm just partly a vampire 🤓 Btw it's an interesting gene to check out, it's not just about freckes & red hair💃 Happy to see u like living here and your finnish is on point, hope u some day get comfortable speaking it😊
I've heard this whole "I understand but I don't speak it" before a lot and I find it bemusing. Are sure you actually are understanding, or you just think you understand? Or in other words, how do you know? Can you translate into English a film or book? Because 90% understanding does not really make sense to me. Also, nice view.
Man i want to move to finland too. But i kind of lack confidence. As people won't accept me. I want to move their for a better life but what if they hate people like me?
You speak Finnish quite well, maybe not perfectly but comprehensibly and in Finland there are different dialects such as Turun and Savo dialects and they are difficult to understand some times.
The only way to learn to speak Finnish well is to speak a lot. You already speak very well. Just keep going and don't be ashamed of your speech. There's no reason for that.
As a typical finn who does not live in the capital I can tell you that Helsinki is not a quiet city at all 😂 absolutely the opposite I hate how loud and noisy Helsinki is 😅 but yes sure it's quiet compared to HongKong 😆
I'm a Finn and I always dread winter. In recent years less so, but still. Snow is nothing but nuisance and I hate coldness. The worst thing is that winter lasts like million years

I like the music. Not too distracting but it was a bit loud at the end of the video. Nice video though!
Will definitely work on that in the future, thanks for the feedback. Glad you liked the video 🙏❤️
The only way to get better at speakimg Finnish is by speaking Finnish
Agreed
Can you talk about what you do for your living, or what things you have done since coming to Finland? 😊
Sure! That will definitely be a topic for an upcoming video 😊
@ 🫶🏼😊
Tosi mielenkiintoista kuulla ajatuksiasi suomesta ja yllätyin ihan sikana kun puhuit noin hyvää suomea, jatka vaan samalla lailla!!
Great vid💙
Thanks bro ❤️🤝
2:42 Ive lived here for 20 years still the winter fucks me up
@@ifufinn I’m hearing many say the same. It’s a tough time for sure!
Tervetuloa suomeen ! puhut hyvin suomea , puhu enemmän suomea , niin opit puhumaan enemmän , kielet on rikkaus :)
Kiitos tosi paljon!
how long did you live in finland before moving to australia, if i may ask? you mentioned having lived away from finland for "most" of your life so i assume you lived here as a child, or?
@jamessight aah not at all! it's awesome that you've been able to experience so many places already :D
Osaat hyvin suomee ja näytät suomalaiselta. Oo ylpee itsestäsi, kaikki ei saa samaa mahdollisuutta elämässä.
Sunshine is like my dementor, it sucks the life & happiness out of me (even in winter), dunno if it's because of the MC1R-gene or I'm just partly a vampire 🤓
Btw it's an interesting gene to check out, it's not just about freckes & red hair💃
Happy to see u like living here and your finnish is on point, hope u some day get comfortable speaking it😊
Ahhh that’s very unfortunate. I also used to get terrible hayfever but recently I haven’t gotten it so bad, luckily.
Very good finnish. (I just realized how 'finnish' that sentence was)
I read that in a rally English accent ahhahah
Hi from Sweden
Greetings!
did you have to go through the finnish army or did you do that for fun?
How do you afford living and moving in different contrives?
I've heard this whole "I understand but I don't speak it" before a lot and I find it bemusing. Are sure you actually are understanding, or you just think you understand? Or in other words, how do you know? Can you translate into English a film or book? Because 90% understanding does not really make sense to me.
Also, nice view.
Man i want to move to finland too. But i kind of lack confidence. As people won't accept me. I want to move their for a better life but what if they hate people like me?
I know another Australian youtuber that moved to Finland

Yo bro I remember all those videos from Finland
@@Derek258Crusco nice to have you here!
You speak Finnish quite well, maybe not perfectly but comprehensibly and in Finland there are different dialects such as Turun and Savo dialects and they are difficult to understand some times.
Thankyou very much!
What's the TV series? Kinda pointless to say it's great but not mention the name.
Oh my bad, it’s called Karppi
@@jamessight kiitos
You speak really good finnish.
Thanks a lot!
The only way to learn to speak Finnish well is to speak a lot. You already speak very well. Just keep going and don't be ashamed of your speech. There's no reason for that.
Thanks! Will keep at it
Im wondering how hard is it for you to understand different dialects since there are so many ways people speak finnish.
As a typical finn who does not live in the capital I can tell you that Helsinki is not a quiet city at all 😂 absolutely the opposite I hate how loud and noisy Helsinki is 😅 but yes sure it's quiet compared to HongKong 😆
Helsinki is very quiet! I can not understand how anyone would think its noisy.
@@mik4mik4 I think it's so noisy and crouded and I just hate it there. 😂 I work in Helsinki but dont live there. It's too big for my taste 😁
Arvostan että olet opetellut kielen. Moni 15 vuotta täällä olleet eivät ole viitsineet nähdä tuota vaivaa minkä sinä olet tehnyt. Puhut oikeasti tosi hyvin - kutsutaan sitä vaikka "kengurusuomeksi" 😀.
kengurusuomeksi ahahhahaha this is funny, kiitos!
@@jamessight Ole hyvä - sinä omistat nyt tämän termin.
Weather in Finland, even as finn never get used to it..
Yeah!
Oh, wow. Hyvinhän sä puhut! 😁
Kiitos 😅
your finnish accent or what ever its called is really good coming from a finn
Thanks a lot!!!
ok, ismo clip got me maybe too hard.
🤣 boss ismo
What happened with you and Jesse (Mauton)?
I'm a Finn and I always dread winter. In recent years less so, but still. Snow is nothing but nuisance and I hate coldness. The worst thing is that winter lasts like million years
Completely understand. I get the same feeling hahaha
