- In this episode, one woman walks us through the various expenses she realized she was overpaying for, and how you can reduce these same costs in your own life.
Through weekly video essays, "Making It Work" showcases how real people have upgraded their personal or financial lives in some meaningful way. Making your life work for you doesn't mean getting rich just for the sake of it. It means making the most of what you have to build a life you love, both in your present and in your future. And while managing money is a crucial life skill for everyone, there's no one "right way" to go about it - you have to figure out what works best for you, full stop.

This is an appreciation post for all the comments that warned about the phone plan ad. Skipped right through point #2.
1. Walk or bike if possible.
2. Phone advertisement garbage.
3. Buy clothes that don’t need to be dry cleaned.
4. Don’t wear mascara, it’s covid, makeup investments at this point aren’t worth the use for zoom calls.
5. Generic allergy meds? Is this note worthy?
6. Library card, lots are doing curb side pickup and there are tons of audiobook options with most branches. Using a library card has literally saved me thousands over the years.
3. Right?? Aren't dry cleanable clothing usually more expensive? It's always those pricey coats and dresses that need dry cleaning 😂🤔
4. I really dont see the point of mascara in general. Rub some caster oil over your lids if you want longer/thicker lashes. Spending $15-20 every 3 months on something no one even notices smh 😂
6. Everyone seems to have magically forgotten that you can borrow books 😅😂
This video wasn't really that helpful tbh.
Generic brand medicine overall is good thing to remind ppl of.
I myself some years ago used to buy Ibuprofen at grocery stores and pharmacies where just The big name brand in my country existed.
Then I found a online pharmacy site where generic ones cost a 4th almost 5th of the big name brand one. Same ingredient and ”strength” yet so much cheaper. So 98% of the time now i buy the generic ones, unless I need it quickly and have no access to The generic ones.
Sure it is a medicine not that expensive normally but every cent counts.
Nowadays even some/most physical store pharmacies have their own cheap brand too.
Also, if you're in the US or Canada (not sure if it works in other countries,) you can use the Libby or Overdrive (?) app to digitally check out and borrow books, magazines, audiobooks, movies, etc. from your library.
Plus if your library doesn't have a book you want, you can request they get it! Many librarians are happy someone is taking an active interest
I like your list a lot better. Thank you!
Ads disguised as educational videos are threatening to ruin a good channel.
bunch of sellouts
LONGEST add ever!!! For real!
I was thinking the same :(
But it's not the whole video, it's one entry on the list 🤔🤔
@@brixan...That's the disguise...
I didn't mind the Visible ad. I understand that this is a business and needs to be supported somehow. It is clearly stated in the description that the video is sponsored. So I don't understand why people are saying it's shady. If it's potentially helpful to someone who may need the information, that's great. If not, just keep watching for the other useful information offered.
Wowww that ad slipped right in so smoothly.
Literally as I read your comment
The heads up at the beginning just made it perfect 👌🏾
Haha, as smooth as sandpaper!
Not very smooth imo. They do this ALL the time at TFD! Then again, I get their content for free so.. they gotta get revenue somewhere. And I can imagine that some of their sponsors offer actually interesting services in the US.
@@emilyw7555 3000 grit sandpaper is pretty smooth
1. Monthly metrocard
2. Unlimited cell phone plan
3. Dry cleaning
4. Expensive mascara
5. Bank fees
6. Allergy medication
7. Book subscriptions
Thanks
2. Commercial of one company
Lol ty for the comment, i dont even pay for any of these things so im glad i can bypass the video
Wait, no mascara 😱
Lol that’s an essential for me 💋
*expensive mascara
Kinda disappointing that the whole phone point turned into an ad for one place instead of just general information about choosing phone plans.
But the main idea is the same: do you really need unlimited plan? Maybe you can switch to cheaper limited option or check out other suppliers offers
Unfortunately, that almost always happens in these list videos at TFD. I really like the channel otherwise, but their advertising practices are kinda shady sometimes.
As someone who’s not in the USA, I don’t wanna watch an ad for an American phone company.
I only like the Chelsea videos, these ones seem to always be shady.
That's the phone plan they chose though, so? All the details were specific to this person and what they did
How do you think they should make their money? This is still a business, and people need to get paid. Relying only on RUclips's algorithm to generate enough as money isn't only stupid, it's unsustainable. As a non-American, I find it even less of a problem, they won't get my money, but I will learn from the example. I switched mobile providers a few months ago, saving €10/month.
As long as it's clearly marked that video is sponsored, I don't mind, I just use the information I can use and go with that. That's what you're supposed to do anyways.
This video is 25% ad read
metrocard (pay per ride can be cheaper for you depending on use), unlimited data, dry cleaning (use dryer sheets for everyday upkeep), mascara (expires quickly, so use the cheaper ones), allergy meds (use generic), book subscriptions (if you're picky they're pointless)
Bank fees.
Makeup expires when I say it expires.
LOL!! 😅
Same tbh...
Mostly same on that one. I do try to replace my mascara and liquid eyeliner every few months because liquid makeup is a better vector for bacterial growth than powder makeup is, and eyes are more sensitive to infection. But all my powders (eye shadow, blush, etc.)? Yeah I keep those for years and years.
@@thatjillgirl I agree, I feel like as long as it doesn’t irritate your skin or eyes and you’re not sharing your makeup with others it’s fine
Yeahhh no... I found out the hard way that makeup expires when I used my mascara for way too long and ended up getting a stye that wouldn’t go away on its own and needed to be surgically removed... trust me it expires
Where is that person who lists all seven of the things so I don't have to watch the whole video???
Looking for that right now 😂😂🤣
@@theresamcbride9572 same here! haha!
1- metrocard
2- phone plan (ad)
3- dry cleaning

When you already did all the things she said but watched this hoping for a brilliant idea you never realized:
But the main idea is the same: do you really need unlimited plan? Or maybe you can check out other suppliers offers (i believe in your country are many options to choose from)
Ups sorry I posted to wrong comment :D
In that case, you can feel good about yourself for being money savvy. I wouldn't give too much thought about a random RUclips channel.
Most of your advices are only useful if you're living in the US.
- Unlmited public transport in Milan: 30€ per month, including train, subway, tram.
- 70GB 4G+, unlimited text and calls: 5.99€ per month
- Medication is almost free in Italy, for non-life-saving medications (which are free) you only pay a small fee (3-4€ per item).
I am still paying less than you :)
In ireland the rates are pretty similar! €30 cap for all public transport, unlimited data, calls and texts plus 100 minutes between €15-30 depending on provider and medicine is very cheap or next to nothing if you have a state medical card!
Lmao I live in a city in Germany and pay 55€ for public transportation and it is cheaper than regular because I’m a student...
Internet costs 20€...in general it’s really expensive
@@lenal2068 I pay about 30€ per month for home fiber optic connection, you’re paying less! :)
6€ /month ??! Wow that’s amazing! In Belgium your plan would cost about 60€ (I’m lucky my employer pays my phone).
@@YourBuddyDidi yes, mine is particularly cheap powered by Vodafone, on average you’d pay 8-9€ per month on cellular and about 30€ for home fiber optic connection.
This used to be my favorite series of the channel. Too bad its videos are now shorter and with less useful information than before. We all have to pay bills, so I’m not saying anything about the ad, but in the past I minded it so much less - the content of the video was way more meaningful than nowadays.
Pls use subtitles
Yes agree, it would be great to have captions on this and all of your videos!
Having a sponsored video, understandable! But be careful not to turn an educational point into a full-blown ad. That was disappointing.
That visible mobile bit was a clever way to sneak in a paid sponsorship
Visible (and Verizon) doesn’t work in all areas even when they claim it does. Just something to ask around about where you live and work before making the switch.
As a book lover I borrow all my books and audio books from the library/Libby app, and if there is a book I absolutely love I will then purchase it. No frugal person has EVER mindlessly spent $50 on books that they are not even reading
When this video turned into 1 long commercial - I stopped watching.
Not an ad right in the middle
It's amazing what little things can make a difference.
Idk, all of these seem like rich people problems to me.
I wish there were more interaction with your subscribers in the comments section
Hey everyone, I'm not the biggest fan of ads either, but they literately have a company to run and employees to pay, and we are getting content and information for FREE...so cut them some slack for throwing in an ad out of the seven points....plus, even if you don't go with their suggestion, it's a good reminder to take a look at your phone plan and see if you can find something that'll be better for wherever you are.
Its not that they have an ad/sponsor, its that the entire video seemed to be ad based and only created to push said sponsor. The integration was lazy.
Dislike because this is an entire Ad
At least it's integrated and relevant
@@HamishDownie this isnt integrated at all.....
Be careful with those at home dry cleaning kits. The chemicals in them are STRONG and they give me awful headaches. I've had to use them for work and it was not a fun time.
Great observations and makes me want to review some of my expenses as well! The first one, right off the bat...sometimes we can go on autopilot with things like this and when you really break it down, you're overspending. Also, really liked #7 (love me some books :)). Thanks for sharing!
My nose got itchy just looking at that field of dandelions.
1. Monthly metro card 🚌
2.. Unlimited cell phone plan 📲
3. Dry cleaning 👕
4. Mascara 👁
5. Bank fees 💵
6. Allergy medication 💊
7. Book subscription 📚
My parents Costco membership has been a lifesaver when it comes to allergy medication. My doctor said last year to switch to an allergy medication with a decongestant. Problem is, you can only buy 15 days worth at a time, and the name brands (and even most generics) cost $20-$30 a pop. Kirkland only costs $5! You can use their pharmacy for prescriptions without a membership, but you do need one for over the counter.
Y'all be careful with Visible and Verizon prepaid. They are subject to depriotization at any time. My internet would slow to a crawl several times a day. Now I'm willing to pay more for quality service, available when and where I need it.
However, these are wonderful when they do work for your needs. It really helped me save a ton during my debt repayment year.
These fees are sneaky and play in the shadows. Gotta shine some light on them 😀
Open yourself a bank account at a federal credit union, there are basically no fees. It's perfect for a checking account where you will frequently transfer money in and out. My paycheck goes in and I use it to pay my bills and credit cards with no fees. No upkeep fees either.
I of course get it that TFD needs to make money in order for us to get free content! And although the video was announced as sponsored.. hiding a full on ad behind a “tip” is a bit shady. I actually typed the times in Excel (yes.. I’m bored), here are the results: the ad took 26% of the entire video! Intro + outro was 13% of the time, so only 61% of the video were actual tips.
Btw, even with the 61% of actual content, I cannot shake the feeling that random tips were just gather quickly to fill up time in the ad video. Expensive mascara? Allergy meds? Anyway, I digress.
Putting the ad in the middle helps ensuring that people actually see it, than if it’s put at the end.. so I get that. But I don’t think it should be hidden as a “tip” in itself, it should be clearly separated from the actual tip (which is “make sure you’re getting the best mobile provider for *your* needs” and not “hey get this X provider”).
I’m seeing this more and more in this channel. I’ve been a constant and loyal viewer, reader, commenter and sharer from the start but I’ve become increasingly sceptical of the TFD because I feel less and less like I get value from the content and so less and less connected (hidden ads like in this video, out of touch articles like that girl “saving” by not paying rent/mortgage, bills, etc, etc) and that’s a shame.
I hope they decide on a better and more transparent strategy, that doesn’t take the viewer for granted and focuses on quality content. I know it’s easier said than done but that’s my take on it.
I like this channel, but this video offered nothing of value, had a long ad in it, and even though it was published yesterday I feel like I have watched it previously? Super disappointed.
🙎🏾♀️ wait a minute!! Was this made just for the ad? Number 1 and 2 took up 1/2 the video...numbers 3-7...? book subscriptions? 🤷🏾♀️
Can’t wait to view these and some of your other recent releases as I just dropped $900 @ Costco. No furniture. No booze. No Wagu steaks & just me n the dawg‼️
this channel is insanely sponsored
Costco's Kirkland brand allergy meds are the best option. I've tried their versions ofFlonase, Claritan, and Zirtec. All work the same as the name brand for soooo much less.
They gotta make money guys, just skip a few minutes and no more ad!
I can’t imagine a life where I don’t fly as cheaply as possible
Dry cleaning sheets are a thing? How did I not know about this and can anyone give me a brand of one that good?
I use Dryel brand! - Holly
Wow. Your generic meds are still expensive. Here in the U.K. I can get my generic anti histamine for £1.00 for a months supply 😀
90% of this video is an *ADVERTISEMENT* !!!!!
Y'all are hating on adds and sponsorships for no reason. TFD is just trying to make their money. Maybe if you subscribed and actually "liked" the videos, they wouldn't have to do so many sponsorships.
Dry cleaning SHEETS?? What is this magic?
Exactly! Looked them up in Amazon and Google images to no avail.
Dryell was an at-home dry cleaner I've used in the past. Not sure if it's still around tho 🤔
No 4 - Mascara: Laura Mercier is cruelty free, while L'Oreal is not. So, no deal for me.
I'm with you on that. I'm thankful cover girl is cruelty-free now!
You don't have to buy the L'Oreal one. It's just an example.
So I guess it then, for you unlike her, falls under ”extra” that is still worth it to you. We all have Different factors we hold as essential or non-negotionable when shopping/budgeting.
There are a lot of drugstore/lower cost brands that are cruelty-free. You can also buy minis that will probably last until you should switch mascara anyway.
Eating out was the one thing I was overpaying! Like if you are guilty!
Ouu.... I'm going to check out Visible.
Speaking of allergy meds, Costco is great for generic meds.
Istg everytime i open a shopping app i would put something in my cart and it's making me broke
I use shoptagr for this! Instead of hitting "add to cart," I'll save it to my shoptagr so I can sit on the decision for a while. Often I realize I didn't need it, or if I really want it then I wait for shoptagr to tell me when it's on sale. I sound like an ad right now lol... but really it's been a huge help so I don't feel like "now or never" impulse buying

personally this video wasn't helpful, but I am glad it didn't have the stupid "no lattes" cliché in it. As someone who works 2 retail jobs and 9-12 hrs a day with 30mins in between jobs to eat, I tend to eat out a TON-which is where I need to cut back. I walk 5 mins to work so transit isn't an issue; who buy clothes that need to be dry cleaned anyway? Mascara is very worth it (to me) if it the only make up you wear, especially when your eyes are the only thing people see with a mask on; Generic meds are always the way to go, they are exactly the same and may even be better than name brands; and who has time to read, and when you do an e-book is always a cheaper choice, though a physical book still has it's charm; If you are being charged fees at your bank you "didn't know about" then it is 100% your fault for not reading what you signed up for when you opened the account. These videos are becoming less and less helpful and more about ads. I don't mind sponsored content but don't center the video topic around it unless you actually make it helpful for the majority of viewers, not just those that live in NYC, or the USA for that matter
I literally will never ever ever purchase "dry clean only" clothing.
Are you gonna displease yourself cause of expenses? if you like it, go for it
I use the delicate setting on my washer + a laundry bag for “dry clean only” hasn’t failed me yet. Now, we only take thick winter coats and blankets to be actually dry cleaned.
@@whats_app5594 your comment and opinion literally dont matter to me or anyone else. Have fun overspending for clothing that has an unnecessary amount of extra care involved

my first FIRST comment OMG!!! LOOK MOM, I MADE IT!!

Bookstore subscriptions? Seriously?
This channel is becoming so sad. It's degraded into whole ad videos and impractical financial advice for anyone living anywhere near the poverty line. Not cool.
like books? why not search for a free PDF link and download it. doesn't cost a nickel
You have to be careful of pirated material

Why are ppl so bothered by the ad? The description clearly states that this vid is sponsored by Visible. So, what did u expect?
Stop buying so many shoes and handbags!
This video is kind of a disappointment since it mostly consists of either basic common sense (eg. don’t buy a metro pass if you don’t need it often), out of touch advice (most people don’t have 70 dollar monthly book subscriptions) or disguised ads.
Once again , groundbreaking videos from this channel. I learnt nothing whatsoever, this is a huge advert for a garbage mobile phone sponsor 🤨
