Whispers from the Tory party suggest Kemi Badenoch is the frontrunner for leader however some Conservatives find her approach "abrasive", says the Spectator's political editor Katy Balls.

@@lawsonspedding6136 But if she's not competent? And if she's been defending a government which has raised taxes to record highs? And if she just spouts nonsense in general? All of those seem to apply.
But even if she had all of those - let's call them qualities - that you're looking for, she'd still be a bad choice if she antagonises her colleagues (as Badenoch clearly does). The new leader needs to create an united front and I'm not sure even Badenoch's closest friends would suggest that's remotely in her skillset.

When i was young during an election every house displayed a vote for poster, since 1997 this has almost died out, during this election i noticed three, i think this is because many people see Westminster as an alien place, just an observation but if correct it does not bode well.

This might be the most sensible thing I've heard any Tory say in the last decade or so. Allowing the party members to select the party leader is an utterly insane idea. It is okay for minor parties - with no chance that their choice could ever become PM - but not for the two biggest parties. Party members will always select the most ideologically pure candidate, for example, Liz Truss and Jeremy Corbin. MPs can at least be trusted to put self-interest first so they'll at least try to select someone who may be an effective leader and have some chance of winning an election.

The problem with having a businessman as a previous Tory science minister and as someone to have on a radio show is that business is about pleasing share-holders and getting customers to *believe* they are getting a good product for good value whether that's true or not. Like socialised medicine, government is about actually delivering good outcomes regardless of the media spin. Business-persons are, arguably, good organisers and good exploiters - yes organising is useful in government, but this business-worship needs to stop. It's baking selfishness, superficiality and profit-above-benefit thinking in politics.

If Kemi had been made leader in 2022, the Tories would have gained a second landslide this year. Kemi is the closest thing the Tories have to a saviour, but I could only have said this with confidence in 2022 -- before the dizzying succession of coups. The sacking of Suella was the last nail in the Tories' coffin. - she and Kemi propped up the Tories for a few precious months.I think it's too late for Kemi to hammer any new ones back in.

She probably needs them to lose so she could remake the tories and be leader. I too think if she was elected in 2022, they probs would have won. Labour were polling at 40-50% and ended up with 33.7% which is shocking and speaks to how little the country embraced them. Plus reform out of the picture means 240 seats at a minimum. It’s clear unless something happens she’s going to be leader and that should get most of the right wing back, even if a deal is made with reform.
