Lyrics:
Well he's following the broken lines
Living on borrowed time
Motel rooms and broken hearts all left behind
You swear he couldn't close his eyes
As he shifts into overdrive
He's been up and down this road so many times
The man of his own
And searching just keeps him proving
That only the road
Can tame the rebel in his soul
It's the rhythm of the highway
As he rolls on down
And city lights as they fade from sight
Drives the man behind the driving wheels
Like a cowboy in a rodeo
Riding hard but never letting go
You'll be wand'ring through the twilight of his life
Waylon Jennings on the radio
Country music and engines roar
Like a shooting star across a desert sky
And he's got a home
But it's out on the blue horizon
Heaven only knows
There's still a rebel in his soul
It's the rhythm of the highway
As he rolls on down
And city lights as they fade from sight
Drives the man behind the driving wheels
And chasing southern lights
In the distant sky
And open plains with the mountains high
Drives the man behind the driving wheels
Well he's thought about settling down
A little diner on the edge of town
But in this world of push and shove
He's still got freedom in his blood
It's the rhythm of the highway... Видеоклипы
lived in australia for two years back in the 80's...barnes was like a god to just about everyone...as well...one of the greatest voices in the history of rock .
Where do you live now?
New Zealand🤣
This amazing song was played at my uncles funeral about 5 months ago! he was a hard working trucky and lived for driving trucks! we gave him the best send off anyone could ever want! he arrived at the service on the back of his truck with this song blaring through the speakers!! truck air breaks going and horns being blown! was just the most amazing thing ever! and i know he would have been loving every minute of it! driving wheels ROCKS and its a song ill never forget! RIP Uncle Mick
Hello how are you doing? It’s nice meeting you here
My niece chose this as one of the songs to be played at my brothers funeral November 2022. My brother was a professional truck driver, he did this job for many many years and his life was lost in a horrific truck accident. I so love this song and loved that it was played at his funeral, but its still so raw and unreal. He played a few of Jimmys song, as my brother loved him. RIP my brother I love and miss you so so much every single day
This is Australian as you can get.Loved the song when it was released in the 1980`s and still love it today.Great long distance driving song. You rock Jimmy.
You'd never hear anything like this now.
Great piece of music.
Jimmy Barnes he is big enough for all of us to praise and scream for him
please turn up the volume!! Jimmy needs to be heard....
love Jimmy Barnes here in the Tampa, Florida
cold chisel is the band.get that into ya.
Dartan- this isn't a cold chisel song just jimmy Barnes
I met Jimmy Barnes at a book signing. He is an absolute champion.
Nobody can sing like him
Love this. The true essence of Australia. Trucks, the open road, blood sweat and tears. And maybe a few beers with dinner.
Inspirational.

Hello how are you doing? It’s nice meeting you here
For about two years, I lived the lyrics of this one. Hotshot freight is hard on your life and your system, but I wouldn't have had it any other way back then. Nothing like being in command of your own rig on the open road
This song got me home. Melbourne to Adelaide and back to Melbourne. Flat tire just after Bordertown. 9pm. Had the family in the car. Got out all our luggage out of the boot. Put the spare wheel on, put luggage back. Then back on the road. Checked into the hotel in North Adelaide around 2.30am their time. Eta should have been around midnight. Got up bright and early by my uncle and dad to go shopping for a brand new 2nd hand tyre for the Commodore at Gepps Cross. So much for a relaxing weekend in Adelaide with the family.
The good old days With Jimmy Barns ...

1st:: I drove for over 3,000,000 miles, and this is the only truck-driver song I ever liked. 2nd: I loved cranking up Jimmy's Freight Train Heart, just before crossing the George Washington Bridge, to get me in the mood for driving in NYC.
And, oh yeah,, 3rd: David Lindly's opening to Driving Wheels is absolutely killer.
Sounds like he used Lava Lamps for out-put tubes in his amp. Finally...
"Freight Train Heart:" truthfully: One of the greatest un-sung albums of all time
Yeah Dave Lindley’s Work and the piano makes this song. Opening pedal steel is amazing
Try not to speed listening to this one when driving....great song!

Guitar at the starts always gives me the chills
I'm 16 and I listen to this song all the time, I'm just a sucker for slide guitar and this is truely an amazing introduction and an amazing song. Was lucky enough to see Jimmy live at Mick Cock's support concert and his voice just blew everyone's ear drums out, absolutely amazing... My dad's a Truck Driver and he always tells me how hard they can have it on the roads, thankyou Jimmy :) nothing beats Australian Rock n' Roll
Well he's following the broken lines
Living on borrowed time

This is a great song to listen to while on a cross country road trip.
A pommy boy from Elizabeth South Australia who made it big. Thanks Jimmy, love you and Cold Chissel

many a night listening to jimmy barnes whilst driving. made a long night doable.
So I've been listening to jimmy barnes for years without realising he's the AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH cowboy?
One of the best rock songs ever, unbelievable singing - thanks Jimmy!...
why is it unbelievable?
when you first heard the song Driving Wheels did you think it wasn't Jimmy Barnes singing?
Reminds me of the wharf days out at Webb Dock West in Melbourne. Drove the Isuzus from the berths to the yard.
Turn this up as loud as you can 👍
After a big crash racing Mx at Laidley,Queensland,AustraliaEarly 1987.,I was left in a deep, deep coma.Bleeding on my brain, heart failure, kidney failure, lung failure, ect, ect.Doctors were going to turn my life support off after three months in my coma.Only my parents placed my radio beside my bed, playing your 'No Second Prize''.Playing it day and night to try and wake me from my coma. Then one day,I opened my eyes to your song, seeing my parents, family and friends all break out in tears,he's awake. Then I was out cold again and again.Every time I opened my eyes, its was to your music Jimmy Barnes.Your music saved my life.Sing forever Jimmy, your music is my life, thanking you.Read more Show less Reply 1

Hello how are you doing? It’s nice meeting you here
First CD I ever bought {Driving Wheels}, and at 41 just bought my first truck, 1977 SAR 8V71T, luv this song/vid
Jimmys songs bring back a lot of memories of good times. The eighties music was the best ever !!
national anthem of Australian truckies, jimmy you nailed the feelings of drivers leaving home and being behind the wheel all week. My all time favourite, thanks.
A brilliant song to kick off the outstanding Freight Train Heart album, and Walk On is an equally impressive closer.
The truth is, Jimmy Barnes, is considered by Australian born citizens, who love Australia, to be a great Australian. As they also consider John Farnham, as also ACDC, as providers of great Australian music. They stir patriotism in the hearts of Australian born people, including myself. That must be respected by those who come here.

When I was a child, my mother had like four music CDs. One was Bryan Adams' "So Far So Good'', One of Jimmy's ones (Can't remember which, to be honest), and two Enya CDs.
That music was my childhood. And boy does this song bring back memories.
she had some class.
gotta love an old SAR
I think it's perfect. Awesome singing. Awesome song! :)
Tonight in Germany (Bensheim near Frankfurt) : We have 200miles to go one way and the highway is snowy-white. We´ll start soon to see Jimmy. Truckies on Sundays have a break here, fortunately...
HE'S A.... LEGEND... IN HIS TIME .👌...CHEERS....💋💋💋
Barnes has pipes. Great tune. lyrics. love it.
Barnes being Barnes!!! Going through Hell, entertaining us (Aus at least), Raw and Real!
Nothing like getting in your truck it's a lifestyle that I nearly lost because of a serious head injury 2 years ago and this song got me through some dark times now I'm back in my truck thank you so much Jimmy I know you don't read these but you saved my life
Still love it,65 and going hard! us old guys drove em all! we got it done
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Mr. James Dixon Swan aka Jimmy. The greatest voice ever to come out of Adelaide. My grandfather lays claim to it due to the number of times he pissed in the Murray River. Mr. Barnes. Quite frankly if you can still sing after that, "You the man." Open plains to one and all.
Who is the person that disliked it? John Farnham? Let it go John, don't be mad that Jimmy can still rock!
To see this old Kenworth SAR today will break your heart :(
A classic old truck ruined...
AUSSIEGIZMO76 should be saved... Nothing comes close to this song for truckies and that truck in the video.. They saved the mad max car they should save that sar.. Where is it now mate? I will buy it and restore it
I love playing this song when im driving my truck. That and Khe Sanh are my two fav jimmy songs!
Probably one of the best electric guitar intros to a song. Different to most you tend to hear and really sets the mood for the song.
My older brother, drives road trains, in W,A, so proud
Last Frontier - for me the best song... I really love Jimmy Barnes (I´m from Germany) - his music helps me a lot in the year 1989. I was 18years old, a lot of problems, BARNESTORMING was my first album I ever bought :) THX FOR UR MUSIC JIMMY
No words to say, just listen Jimmy magic!!!!!!!!!!
Great...one of the better Barney's classics
Every time i listen, emotions stream through my body, one amazing intro to an amazing song which most of us can relate to "Living on borrowed time"
Grouse singer , grouse song and bloody grouse truck . Always cranked up the radio to full when I played this while running at night . Jimmy Barnes - just a damn fine legend - thanks for all the great times , songs and memories , Clarke .
night time was the right time
Effing love Aussie, great Country! and great Music to go along with it!! GO JIMMY!
As a lover of Mac Trucks, Wentworth's, even Internationals (a hopeful but knocked-back young female mechanic apprentice) this is a favourite for real blue collar Working Class Men and Women 🚛 and for people who are the true grit of Aussie men and women just trying to get in with it, with a bit of genuine love on the side
such an amazing song. seen it live the other week in townsville. fucking amazing. barnsey still brings in a crowd and doesnt let them down. brilliant.
I remember being at Hartley truck stop watching this being filmed, as a kid, still a great song. Old SAR was a top truck in its day,
Blue Lorikeet. Would of seen my old man there then. Live down Browns Gap
The best piece of my life...Be Bold And Take A Risk.... Cowboy's on the Hume...LEGENDS.😎💋👍
Love it, love it, love it....love the guitar.
Nothing less than simply the best
the best start to a song ever!!
I've driven from Melbourne to Cairns then Darwin and finish at Adelaide. About 10000 km. listening music like this, coming from a small town in Europe it's been the best experience of my life. Love Jimmy, love Oz and love Aussies!
How lucky was I to listen to jimmy and Cold Chisel in the late 70’s and the 80’s one of the best rock singers of all time on ya Jimmy
Today I teamed up with a clinic health worker and we did a " Webster Pack Run " and dropped off medication Webster Packs to clients for a good part of the day. I do this every Tuesday now but still do my other routine stuff on the other days. Beats being stuck behind a desk in my book anyhow. 😁 👌
Love ya Jimmy
Damn shame that Jimmy and Cold Chisel weren't being played on the radio in the states in the 80s and 90s. I know tons of people who would have loved this stuff.
He is such a good singer. And that is a truck I love kenworths

Living on borrowed time ... Shifts into overdrive .... Been up and down this road so many times !!
sorry no comment MR Jimmy Barnes but this song does take me back
I love it how he mentions Waylon Jennings in this. Barnsey and Waylon are two of my all-time favourites!
3:18
*Plays acoustic like it's an electric *
So many people posting here have no idea of what this song is about. For those who want to know, its about a bloke driving a truck back and forth between Sydney and Brisbane on the pacific highway. If you look in the background you can see the references.
Like a cowboy in a rodeo
Riding hard but never letting go
You'll be wand'ring through the twilight of his life
Waylon Jennings on the radio
Country music and engines roar
Like a shooting star across a desert sky
And he's got a home
But it's out on the blue horizon
Heaven only knows

It's the rhythm of the highway
As he rolls on down
And city lights as they fade from sight
Drives the man behind the driving wheels
Great song.👌🏾
great song. love ya jimmy come back to nz and do some south island shows
Lovely
I was into Cold Chisel long before I listened to jimmy Barnes. It is not the same music...but who would want to do at 30(something) what they were doing at 18? Certainly not me! ( perish the thought)
J Barnes became a voice for the working class in Australia when the middle and upper class had most of the air time, esp in the late 80s/early 90s...the fact that his still stands is a sign of quality.
Respect to him and the people who made his career possible.
Great song
drove my son home to this song
Love the song! I want that sar!!
i am ten and jimmy barnes, cold cheisel, bob dylan and kasey chambers are my all time best!
there's a little bit of all of us in this song perhaps ? The Lucky Country !

Hello how are you doing? It’s nice meeting you here
The Ultimate Truckie Anthem...and it's true, without trucks deliveries all across the land would come to a grinding halt and stop, so whenever you truckies hear this song, honk your air horns nice and loud in a symphony salute.
i love this musc i hope he comes back for the v8 supercar in 2013
