MECHANICAL ADVANTAGE FOR THE WIN!! Using Harbor Freight snatch blocks to remove a large tree stump

  • Using pulleys / snatch blocks to help me remove a tree stump in order to clear an area for a future sawmill. Its crazy how much more pulling power you get by just adding these pulleys. I try a few different variations from single line straight pull, 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1.

About the only smart thing he did was to cut a notch on the stump to keep the chain from slipping. Winches aren't build to take the shock loads of an inertia pull. When using the winch, raise the hood to keep the pulley from coming through the windshield if something lets loose.

Adding more pulleys in a system increases friction at each pulley, which requires more force to overcome. While pulleys reduce the amount of force needed to lift a load by distributing it, the cumulative friction from multiple pulleys can eventually offset some of this advantage, making the gains less significant. Also as more pulleys are added, the distance that needs to be pulled increases to achieve the same movement of the load. Despite these factors, the overall mechanical advantage is still present, though reduced due to frictional losses and increased pulling distance.

@@psidvicious somebody did a video...ill try to find it. A 9 to 1 is looking like its the most efficient use (input force for output force) I'm not saying you cant get more pull with something bigger, it just gets really inefficient from there. Also, its most efficient when you have an Ma setup in a particular way where you have ma setup pulling another ma setup, but the number has to be the root of itself.
      For example, the most efficient 4 - 1 setup is a 2 - 1 pulling another 2 - 1. The most efficient 16 - 1 set up is a 4 - 1 pulling another 4 - 1. This makes it so the least amount of pullies are used.

    • @TheBrushcutter

Exactly the comment I was looking for. After hurricane Laura decided I had too many trees in my yard the root balls left after I cut the downed trees up were too heavy for my little tractor to lift. I figured I had enough lawn damage to repair already and didn't want to create huge drag scars from just pulling them across the lawn. So I hooked up the pressure washer, installed the jet nozzle, put on my rain gear and blasted the dirt out of them. I was able to pick the stumps up and move them easily after that. Messy work but it did what I wanted.

That observation comes not only from experience but is reinforced by observation on military installations and National Forrest lands where I hunt. Those areas are burned regularly to help the Red Cockaded Woodpecker, and during military training exercises. Again. Pine will burn mostly away, hardwoods to about ground level. That is from observation and experience trying to burn them out. In fact, the video creator will learn that even now that the stump is dug up and moved to a pile, it still will not burn away readily unless he gets the dirt out of the root ball. Facts.

Mechanical advantage is around us everywhere, but for the most part failed to be noticed or taken for granted. Doubtful that you could even point out every process in your video that makes use of mechanical advantage.
But your video needs to start out with a lengthy and In depth legal disclaimer. There’s almost as many not recommended practices as there are mechanical advantages in the video. I dare not to list them all. But I can not be silent about the most obvious issue. Wirerope and chains are not designed to be shock loaded like that. Not only the dangers of it, there is no way to deny the damage you have cause to your equipment. How hypocritical can one be by taking the time to grease their snatch block, then follow up with the shock loading of their wirerope? It makes about as much sense as showing the advantages of snatch blocks and mechanical advantage but prove to the world the disadvantages out weigh the advantages in your mind. That’s what you did, when you didn’t want to take the time to set up the system that you had so highly praised. You opted to look like a fool. What better example could there be for not practicing what your preaching?
