Massive Waves That Hit California Also Battered Shore Acres State Park, Oregon!

- Yet another massive wave explosion show at Shore Acres State Park in Oregon. Video clips and still photos were taken on 12/23/24. Stills were taken by Randy White from Grants Pass Oregon.
Shore Acres was originally built as an estate in 1910 for Louis J. Simpson, a Coos County timber baron. After a 1921 fire and financial losses devastated his estate holdings, Simpson sold the land to the State of Oregon in 1942. The mansion was taken over by the government during World War II and was used as a radar site. The state took the property back after war, demolished the mansion but maintained the accompanying gardens which still exist!
Beautiful! For those of us who can't make it down to the coast like we used to, I thank you for sharing..
My pleasure!
Yes! And.. the 'down to the coast like we used to' part.. likely in my head for a bit.. 🙃
@@Seracdog
This was one of my Mom's favorite Oregon State Parks. Storms and Christmas lights always drew her to Shore Acres. I've seen many images of big waves from that viewpoint. But I've never seen any waves this massive and spectacular!
This image should win an award. I hope you enter it into some contests. 🏆🌫🌬🌊🥇
Thank you so much... actually Mother Nature did all the work!
I just live 15 minutes from Shoreacres Park. I took some photo of the waves ,but you did a whole lot better job filming it than I could. I’m sharing yours with my friends.
Best of all however... is you were an eye witness!
Wow. You live in an amazing area. I visited and have never been anywhere like it.
It is indeed a very special place!
Of all the so-called "30 foot wave" videos that I've seen recently, yours is by far the most impressive and beautiful, thanks!
Thank you! All I have tried to do show folks what we actually saw. VERY hard to photograph a large wave and give it perspective... need a surfer, etc. moo add scale!
Prolly more like 10 to 12 max.
@@Seracdog I lived near Bodega Bay - was at the UC research cove on a big surf day, trying to take some stills. So hard to "capture" a hint of the experience. You done good! Thanks!
Some of those were probably 40 footers.
@ it’s hard to get the perspective of how large the waves really are… need a surfer…LOL!
Stunning! What an adrenaline rush!!! Thanks for sharing.
It's Mother Nature... showing off in a non destructive manner!
Was watching huge waves crashing over Cape Kiwanda yesterday Overtopping the Cape and washing over it.
Amazing storm video. Thank you.
Such sights are hard to describe, one has to see it in person
I grew up above the beaches in northern california and used to watch the storms. Now in southern oregon, cave junction, west of grants pass, this year, just one night of wind and lightning. Don't know how it missed us, but thankful it did
Impressive video! I live in Bandon and love going to the beach everyday with my dogs. We keep our distance during the rough seas.
Love Bandon! Wise to keep your distance on big days!
Absolutely beautiful.
I could smell the ocean and feel the salt water on my skin.
Used to love swimming in the ocean in SoCal. ❤❤
Thank you.
Mother Nature doing her thing!
Gorgeous recording!!!! The light......those WAVES are insane exploding upon the shore rocks!!!!!
Thank you so much! The real credit goes to Mother Nature for putting on such a great NON destructive show!
Thank you, its not often we see waves that large. You did a great job of getting the perspective of their massive size.
Great video!
Thanks for sharing.
It's Mother Nature... showing off in a non destructive manner!
Wow, awesome captures! Thanks for posting!
Thank Mother Nature for putting on such a great show!
@ I do. But Mother Nature didn’t post it, so I’m thanking YOU! 😀
LOL... thank you very much!
Thanks for posting this. I miss that area of the coast!
... and, no better seafood anywhere!
It's a good thing that you got this footage when you did, this last week's torrential rains have washed away part of the road to get to Shore Acres, I've never seen that in my 70 years here. The wave at 3:33 is well over 120 feet tall.
Incredible video and pics!!! Thanks for sharing 🙌
Thank you, Thank You!
I would be out there too! Loved the constant ‘roar’ as the waves came crashing in around the shore. Goosebumps too as the waves came in. Also loved the sunshine 🌞 trying to breakthrough at times. Lovely!
😌✨♥️✨👍🏽✨🎄✨🇨🇦✨🌎
👍👍👍
Just some advise based on personal experience : If an overhead water explosion lands on you it will retract to the sea and often can be the amount of water you'll find in the kids swimming pool.. like almost 2 foot !! It can drag you back to sea. It happened to me once but i could luckily grab hold of a rail mounted on the dike. These explosions are not just a 'bit' of water coming down. You don't want to end up dying a truly horrible death.
Well said!
@@Seracdog Ty ! I get the shivers watching some people who in all probability aren't aware and are under the assumption they are standing at a safe spot. And it happens SO fast, in the blink of an eye you're a goner and people can only watch you drown.
I'm looking for the footage of the same waves but in Carmel California of 3 men in red sweatshirts on rocks during these waves. One died but not sure what happened to the others. Do you know of this footage?
Sorry, I do not!
Amazing video. Thanks. I spent Wednesday night at a hotel in Ilwaco, WA and the wind was tremendous (50-60mph) until about 4am on Thursday. Drove to Cape Disappointment Thursday morning for the waves which were nice, but nothing higher than 20 feet or so. Up to 30 footers were predicted, but it didn't happen.
Thank you! Cape Disappointment is fun but, as you know, very limited to where you can get a good shot!
My family spent many hours watching the waves.
Thanks for bringing back memories!
You are very welcome!
Beautiful photography, thank you for sharing!
Thank you!
@Seracdog It was incredible photography. I love the ocean, and the waves you captured were fantastic. A New Years blessing
And, thank you again! Mother Nature had a hand in this..,
I was on a trip down HW1 this summer and was in complete awe of this regions beauty. It would be a dream to return during this time. Thank you for posting.
We pinch ourselves for living fairly close...
You have a great eye for composition.
Thank you!
Thanks for the amazing shots .
Mother Nature deserves all the credit!
Beautiful!! Wish I was in Half Moon Bay watching this.
Let's go surfing now, everybody's surfing now, let's go out and get smashed by the rocks. Yeah.
Gorgeous! Thank you for posting.
Thank you!
so awesome, thank you for sharing!
It's Mother Nature... showing off in a non destructive manner!
What I wouldn't do to get some epic drone shots! Great video!!
Drone shots could epic! However, with the wind and drone haters you may have trouble
i love Shore Acres. Thanks for sharing.
Me too!
Thank you for this video of ominous waves. I saw a show like this in Seaside OR in the 1990's. Wasn't as spectacular and fierce as this, but a show nevertheless.
By the way, please don't ever get too close to these waves, my fellow human who strayed away from the crowd..whole families have been lost like this....
I grew up on the Pacific coast but now live in Michigan. I've missed the sound of the waves. Thank you for sharing your experience.❤
In many regards the Pacific Ocean is highly underrated!
Thanks for sharing
Thanks needs to go to Mother Nature for performing!
Thank you for sharing ❤
The real thanks should go to Mother Nature!
Serious pounding on the shore!
PS - great comment on safety
Thank you! I tried not to insult locals who know what to do and often like to wander a bit nearer the crashing waves!
Thank you Al!!! Always fantastic!!! The man standing alone sure made me nervous!!! I guess he understood after a few waves!!! God bless you and your wife in 2025!!! A California Gramma!!! 🎉
Thank you soooo much! I am glad you found the vid!
There's a hotel right on the sand in Monterey Bay. The ocean front rooms have great views but you hear the waves all night on a calm night. I bet it's wild with this storm! I probably wouldn't sleep at all, just be glued to the view!
To be perfectly honest, I missed many wave explosions that were mega huge... reason, I just could not take my eyes off waves that were coming in... too busy hold my chin in my hands!
Cape Arago which is where this was taken is incredibly beautiful. They have an amazing Japanese garden there. It’s stunning and it’s quite large. It also has beautiful beachfront with seals and waterfalls. It is in completely worth a drive just to go see this area. Much less this beautiful park where all these waves are, which is within that same vicinity. If you haven’t been and you are an influencer, I will tell you this is one place you can go where maybe there aren’t too many people. Back when I went there was nobody around, but this was the late 80s.
You nailed it! It's simply an incredible place!
Mother Nature is at its best. What a great video. Thanks for sharing. Some of those that got very close need to use more common sense. One bad wave or rush of water and your life is over. Glad no one was hurt or injured. Happy new years to all. Have a happy and healthy one.
Thank you for your concern! Camera angles, etc. can make it appear that folks are at risk... not the case!
These people who wander off trail should see the videos on RUclips of water bomber drops. Demonstrations have been done to show the power of a few tons of well dispersed “spray” from fire safe altitudes hitting cars, structures etc. It is shocking. This isn’t kids in a sprinkler. Car totally flat. Sheds destroyed with a fraction of the water seen here. Just spray you say?
Agreed!
Thank you for the video.
Thank Mother Nature for putting on the show!
I've been there once with big waves. Even the ground shakes.
23rd the ground had wave induced movement.
Lived on Sunset Beach in Hawaii as a kid. 1951-1953. Huge waves would pound holes in the sand, and when the tide rolled out, we had large saltwater swimming pools to play in, 3-4’ deep. My mom danged near had a nervous breakdown because of that beach…with three little mischievous girls to watch after…until we finally got base housing. She couldn’t swim.
Incredible! Film that from a great distance.
❤ the waves are just amazing thank you for sharing
All thanks truly should go to Mother Nature
Amazing, beautiful and scary! All at the same time. Never mess with Mother Nature
Perfectly said!
NEW SUBSCRIBER!!! thank you for this‼️💥💥💥💥‼️
Thank you! You will note that I am a huge exploding wave nut!
Powerful images!
Mother Nature flexing her incredible muscles!
Massive! Nice video Al!
Mother Nature gets all the credit!
Shore Acres is a beautiful spot.
Agreed!
My Mother at 12 the date would have been Summer Of 1932 or 1933 she found a agate had it cut in half it was a perfect picture of the ocean wave magnificent as you are videotaping
Wow, that’s very special!
Great video
Thank you… all the credit should go to Mother nature
Treacherous yet beautiful. Impressive video.
Tahnk you very much
Looks just like Cornwall…that storm was intense
Definitely a day to pay attention!
Dangerous. Be safe . I miss storm watching in Santa Cruz , my home
👍
Oh my word! I live in South Dakota and your waves are making me feel some sort of way. A little sick to be honest. I’m still alive(: thank you for the queazy stomach inducing vid.
LOL!
Beautiful, We do have high waves off the Oregon and Washington coast all year round. They don't get waves like this on the east coast
It doesn’t get much better then Shore Acres
Can confirm: going off trail and getting hit by one of those waves is terrifying. 😅
.. Yikes
I could watch this for hours. Brings high blood pressure right down!
Very mpressive. We have a similar spot Rafe’s chasm in Magnolia,Ma that is wild n bad nor’easters but this looks like the major leagues of storm watching along with Vancouver Island
To be honest, the events at Shore Acres have become the gold standard for spectacular wave watching along the Pacific Coast
Absolutely glorious! 💚🎄❤️🙏
Rather beautiful !🌊🌊
Sometimes Mother Nature has a "different" way of displaying he beauty
"The winds and the waves roaring.." 🌪🌊
Amen!
So beautiful. The power of nature.
Amen!
Perfect light too.
I’ve always wanted to storm watch the Oregon coast with it’s offshore monoliths. Awe inspiring breathtaking natural beauty.
Well, come on down to Shore Acres when there is a high surf...Best wave watching area anywhere!
Your video was truly beautiful and inspiring. As a fellow creator, I appreciate the effort you put into it. Sub and 👍2
@RobertCHoweSr 👏🙏👏 I sorta went what??? At the OP messing..."a fellow creator" I understand what they are attempting to say, but yes, they did not create anything. Perhaps "capture" would be a better word.
I get it, "content creator" but it struck me as it did you.
All honor and praise to Jehovah God💙
Thank you!
Nature is amazing!!!❤
Agreed!!!
The guy out on the bluff is like the tourists at Yellowstone taking selfies with Bison.😅
Good analogy!
The guy out on the bluff lives here, knows the ocean, and tromps these bluffs 2-3 times a week, all day. Safer spot than where everybody is. Wise.
Good to know that! I hope you understand why I put it in. It’s warn the UNINFORMED of the potential dangers. Locals know the area like the palm of their hand. Problem is stupid newbies see someone out there and they assume it’s OK…
@Seracdog going thru your videos, looks like you have had a good life of exploring 😀
@@elflordsjourneys yup!
Good stuff! Thank you for sharing this. My sister and I want to plan a trip and come see this event, can you tell me is this location ADA? I cant seem to find much info on the access from parking to viewing area(s). Like, how far/hard of a walk on what sort of terrain is it to reach.
ADA... YES! From the parking area to the main viewing area it is about 50 yards... fairly level. The event only happens a few times 3-12) a year between the months of October and March. Look for a High Surf warning issued by NOAA for Coos Bay...
Wow . Thanks !!
It's Mother Nature... showing off in a non destructive manner!
Spectacular!
It's Mother Nature... showing off in a non destructive manner
I love living here 🫧🌊🩵
You lucky dog!
Beach combing oughta be fun when this is over.
LOL!
Hey Al? What can you tell us about the road washout - are we sunk for the season?
I just happened to be at my computer when your comment popped. I asked Steven Michael (Mr. Shore Acres... he has the best shots and lives about 10 minutes from SA) this morning...he has no clue when the road will be passable. One can still walk from Sunset Bay to SA...
@Seracdog I'm pretty sure you have the best shots Al! Thanks for the reply.
Thank you again, but honestly Steven has thousands of jaw dropping stills taken over a 15+ year span. Plus, I kind of consider him my SA mentor!
My Momma would have loved seeing this. I used to drive her to Depot Bay to watch storms at the Blowhole.
Well maybe she had birdseye view!
INCREDIBLE.
Mother Nature at her non destructive best!
ahhhhhmazing video‼️‼️.. suuper thank you for it!! that’s some ffffffierce fetchiness, huh‼️‼️💨💨💨🌊🌊🌊
the still photos at 2:55 are literally BOMB💥💥💥
Agreed!
Al, I saw what you typed in the video, but in the future you might want to think about doing this w/ drones from now on. You never can tell when a mammoth wave will get over the "safe zone".
Good suggestion however, it is often quite windy making flying a drone very risky. In addition, flying drone in a state park is frowned upon!
What is the cause for the huge waves?
Pacific storms that roll in
The Pacific Ocean…the most misnamed body of water on earth…
Any suggestions for a name change?
@@Seracdog The Outragealicious Ocean!
Love it!
Spectacular!!!
Thank Mother Nature!
Recalling waves.. not near that size, shake the ground from hundred foot cliffs at Bodega Head Trails. 😄 _Yeah!_ Thank you Sir!
Same at Shore Acres… one feels the ground move
Beautiful, hand of God.
Mother Nature displaying her might!
Guess what, those were different waves! Golly gee.
Kind of like mini tsunamis…
This reminds me of The Last Unicorn at the end when the lost 🦄 gallop out of the ocean and sea foam. This is just amazing.
This is happening on the west coast of S America too. We are being told it is completely normal 😂
Wow!
It's a yearly happening here on the south coast of Oregon during stormy weather 😮😊
Yup!
Yes, waves hitting the coast in winter is normal.
Incredible!
Mother Nature…”showing off!”
I love nature!
Me too... Amen!
#Pressure 🪨🌻🌻❤️⚡️🗡❤️♾️⤴️⤴️
Amen!
the sea was angry that day my friends
Amen!
Could this of been from the landslide in Peru that was a little over 19 ft high.? Whoa
No! It’s from a “normal” Pacific storm.
Seems like there must be some underlying causes for the oceans to be so rough, I lived on the Oregon coast for years and never saw anything like this, it seems to be happening up and down the west coast this year.
The situation at Shore Acres is very unique! It is the way the ocean bottom has eroded away of the years that allows for the big explosions to occur.
Warmer ocean makes larger, more powerful storms
Thanks for info!
Part of me wants to say I have no sympathy for these idiots that get washed into the sea because of their foolhardiness and ignorance. Alas, I’m not able to say that. It breaks my heart that they will leave behind a family grieving for something so unnecessary. If your shots don’t scare the pants off some of these characters that would go out there, nothing will. This is absolutely stunning photography/videography! I live on the prairies in Canada. I have not just major respect for the ocean, but a lot of terror after having been pummelled in Mexico. I was lucky to be spit up onto the beach. Young and dumb. 😉
It’s weird all of a sudden I have started watching videos of ships in storms with 30 and 50 foot waves. Part of watching that has reduced my fear a little bit of the ocean and up to my respect. If you take precautions, you do everything possible you have a chance of survival if something goes wrong. Don’t go out in bad weather, the only thing you can’t control is the ocean itself. If the ocean decides it wants you, it’s gonna take you rogue waves are emblematic of that.
Thank you once again … happy new year. I hope it’s a healthy happy one filled with cool moments like this for you to share your craft with the world.😊
Mother Nature will always rule the Earth. Mankind is just a speck of sand in her world.
I totally agree!
Are more homes going to plummet down the cliffs?
I am afraid, yes!
I’ve lived on the California coast my whole life. We call that UGLY! 🤷♂️
If you are referring to the surf...agreed!
Wow! The king tides are tame compared to these monsters!!
No comparison. King Tides are a totally different deal!
I grew up in San Diego 15 minutes from the bay my parents wouldn't let me go to the ocean when she was upset like this
Your parents were very wise!
@Seracdog yes but at the time I was mad at them for not letting me see the big waves
I get it! Bummer...
Pretty awesome!
Yes indeed! Fun to watch Mother Nature perform in a non destructive manner!
Wow!
That pretty much says it all in one word!
You can really see why our Pacific Coast properties keep getting pummeled - and slipping away.
Humm... do you have a home in Salishan?
Photographer taking photos of photographers taking photographs of a 🌊
LOL... Yup!
