Because the ferries in Japan have to compete with the local airlines, Shinkansen, Intercity Buses and even regular Express trains, so they made the ships even bigger and more luxury for attract the passengers that not-so-hurry.

I have been on ferries in Washington State. I live in Eastern Washington State. The two ferries I rode weren't that clean and the weather was terrifying. The crew on the Spokane (name of the ferry and my city)were so incredibly rude it felt as though they didn't want you there. As I said the weather was bad. The ferry had a roll and an up and down movement that had my land lubber husband green. It slowed down a 1.5 hour trip to 3 hours! And driving off the Ferry was um... interesting to say the least! Thank God the Island was small, the people warm and inviting, the B&B spotless and the food impeccable! They understood my green husband and gave him a drink to settle his tummy (Alcohol I suspect). So after a terrible ferry ride and hurricane like weather, the B&B was a wonderful end to a rough day! While my husband slept off the ferry ride and cure I went shopping.

@@Josh_Fredman I think the attitude on the ferry had something to do with the storms. A whole week of them and extremely rough water. Ours was the last run for them that day because of the weather. Now we have a very small open ferry here in Eastern Washington State. It crosses the Columbia river. It's also free! It can carry 4 cars or 1 truck and 2 cars. Last summer a Longhorn Barbecue was coming back to Spokane from a big catering job. The crossing can take 1.5 hour's at times. Because of the big truck and the current we were slow. Well the Longhorn people opened the back of the truck and all of the food left was shared with us and the two ferry operators!!! Oohhh my goodness!!! Yummy yummy yummy. We pigged out, turned on my car stereo(a very good one), and had a party! The ferry guy's said it was the best crossing ever! I do think so too. And we all got free food to take home!!!

Mainly to go any distance people either drive like they are a raceway 24/7 or drive the 30km or so to the airport and fly as things are pretty spaced out. There are ferries that go to Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island from here, I’ve been on all the ferries for those but not the train

"Have you ever been on the ferry? What is transportation like in your country?" When & if you'll be able to come to Italy a ferry ride you could enjoy is the night ferry from Naples to the Aeolian islands, leaving at 8pm and arriving in the main island (Lipari) at 9.30am, stopping at every island before that, and in particular at Stromboli at 6am... meaning in the right season you could arrive when it's still night and full moon (like what happened to me a few days ago...), Stromboli is always erupting, and seeing the island from the ship with only the light of the moon, the stars and the red of the eruption is really worth the trip. The ferry isn't as nice or new as the ones in your videos, but it's still quite good and was built in the early '90s.

I've been on a ferry from Gourock to Dunoon in Scotland when I visited a few years back. Though I wish I've been on more, especially in Scotland. My family were ship builders for generations and it always make me proud to see a well built ship.

I made this trip when I was 14 years old (1972). My family lived in Fukuoka and I went to school in Kobe (Canadian Academy). The ship we were on was not nearly as nice as this one. We were in second class, there were 10 of us to a single room which had a tatami floor with futon provided. At least it wasn't third class, which was right above the engine room with at least 100 folks in a single "room." This video brought back great memories of my youth.

Our second trip we returned to Kansai, we travelled with our Japanese friends to Kobe, Shirahama and Nachikatsuura and couple of other places. That was also nice. Our third visit was mainly in Tokyo, Yokohama, and Kamakura. Our most recent trip before the pandemic, we spent in Sapporo, Otaru before returned to Tokyo. But the thing I love is how relaxing and slow the journey is. If you need to get somewhere quickly, then take a plane/train/car; if the ferry works for your journey, it is worth trying out. What a beautiful video. I discovered your channel recently and I like the way you respect the privacy from others when you are filming. For me it is a great way to see what public transport and scenery in Japan is al about: awesome!! Well, public transport here (in the Netherlands) is reasonable good. Trains are running at least every hour, often more frequent, and on many lines from 5AM till 11PM-1AM. I must say: this is a small country so that makes things easier in that matter. But... Punctuality is something the Japanese are champions in: we will never come to that high level.
