Hi Hona, I'm doing a student documentary on Kiwis serving in Vietnam. I would be really interested in interviewing your brother. Would that be possible? Many thanks.
It is a disgrace to dismiss such gallantry and heroic acts of bravery. Review old archaic legislation and give recognition where it is deserved. Australia awarded John Key the highest honour with an Honorary Companion in the Order of Australia and NZ gives him a knighthood for what???? Yet bravery, heroism, bravery and serving our country in support of Australia goes unchecked. Come on NZ.
The VC called our troops the 'Grey Ghosts of the forest'. We would pop up, fight and disappear.... Maori and Pakeha knew the bush as many of us were raised in rural areas. Also tribal instincts kicked in amongst Maori being able to read and talk to the forest.
Gawd it frustrates me when journalists get the basics wrong. 1:44 "Norm Fry was 24, and the infantry platoon commander of Victor 6 company.".... ....No, Mr Fry was A platoon commander of ONE of the Platoons IN Victor 6 company.
If he had been an American soldier he would have definitely gotten the medal of honor. Here in the US, we do not have that stupid 5-year limit get with the program New Zealand.
I don't agree with the Vietnam war, that was a waste of our men, women and resources. We should never follow the agenda of another government especially one such as the US. In saying that these men should be given full recognition of their bravery for their actions undertaken no matter what time frame has passed, shame on our government for withholding this honour to them. Our troops are not to blame, for these wars, the governments of the day are. The mistake made here is for these men not being awarded recognition for their bravery in the first place.
What a disgrace how these soldiers were treated, our governments need to hold there heads down in shame, they were sent to there graves, with hardly any training it was a useless war to many lifes lost what for nothing and to be shunned and most living on the streets goverment playing there f war games may they be recognised and never forgotten 45years today these brave soldiers gave there lifes lest we forget
Politicians only have to "tow" the party line to get into parliament. It is the "political parties" that choose their representative to stand in an electorate, NOT US!! Politicians should ONLY represent their "Constituency" in Parliament as that is about ALL they are capable of doing. PROFESSIONALS need to be appointed to hold portfolios and Ministerial positions!! YET, these are the people who aren't even brave enough to cross the street, let alone the house of representatives and they can come up with a pathetic response of NOT recognising the bravery of our troops!!! Wars are started by politicians and are ended by politicians. NEXT time there is a war, we should send the politicians into the theatre of war to fight and I think that they may have a totally different attitude!!! My respects to all Vietnam Vets and in particular the bravery of these men in Victor 6. LEST WE FORGET. (A proud kiwi who was supposed to go to Vietnam.)

This should not be an issue and it fucking pisses me off. Bill deserves the honour that he fought for. It's as simple as that, If the NZ government can not make an exemption due to political bull shit then what good are they?
Just a couple of questions ... 1. Were these soldiers conscripts or regulars ? 2. Were they sent to fight for the Australians by the NZ Army or were they volunteers.?
As 432 said all volunteers, but Nz infantry was consigned to the Australian army RAR ... So, the unjust Australian 'quota system' of awards for bravery has even more far-reaching consequences & innocent victims. This system was instituted & enforced by the same two political parties who are in power in Canberra today. The Liberal Party & their partner the National Party. In those days they called themselves the Country Party. These pompous & bumptious & gutless bags of hot air imposed no such system for their own Imperial awards (knighthoods etc), more is the pity. I did two full tours of Vietnam in the Australian Regular Army, as an Infantry soldier, in 3 RAR. Our dedicated Artillery support unit was 161 Battery, Royal New Zealand Artillery & they never let us down.
