I added Buck sweep a couple of years ago and it's become a staple. I did add the influence trap which worked fairly well. I've recently devised a midline option off of it too. Looks very similar to the defense. Like always just trying not to do too much or put too much on the kids.
I was thinking about moving to a Trap sweep look since I am wanting to go back to more of a 2 back look to help us with our L3's and L2's. Have a pretty big QB who was converted from RB. Basically run Trap with the front side guard pulling and kicking out force man and having the sniffer match the Playside #1 backer. Read the End.
Too bad you didn't show some clips of you using it Coach Mac. I think Buck Sweep from the Gun is a great addition to power read which sounds like the outside run you guys run. Power Read and Buck Sweep can look similar to a linebacker and the blocking can look very similar except the playside guard kicking out instead of blocking back. And I don't need the fullback trap as much when your QB can read the backside. If the Def lines tries to catch the running back in the backfield the QB can pull and he's into the second level right away. IF the backside backer isn't staying home, you have a nice play. But I agree having a trap inside and having the Qb running the buck are great change ups too. But I wish you would have put some film from your games showing your success, especially without a TE. You're running it more like Auburn does instead of a TE & Wing blocking down. Nice work.
I am an old wing T guy. I LOVE buck sweep. my problem is that without the Trap fake it is not that good of a play. It is all full flow. No me gusta. Nowadays my go to is 20 personnel but Buck aint in my repertoire
One thing you could do here is move the FB back even with the QB, have him execute a fake before blocking. Because of the angle of the trap fake he ends up blocking the Mike and either the pulling Playside Guard logs or your slot receiver cracks the DE
I remember when Gus ran bucksweep he motioned a third back into the backfield for a dive threat if you have a running QB or some wildcat personnel have that signal caller work a legitimate trap fake if not a third back in the diamond formation.
