thanks for all your comments, and you're right, when shooting this review I thought it was my phone which was causing problems, but apparently it's the android app, and lots of you are having same problems. So, as I'm still experiencing some of those, be aware of that, if you have an android phone, it may cause you problems!
Zhiyun and Flimic Pro have just released a Android app with integration of the Smooth 4 into the app. Definitely kicks it a notch and bypasses the issues with the Zhiyun app. Although to be fair Zhiyun is new and improving the ZY Play app lately in the Play Store.

The problem is, the Iphone is now industry standard, therefore, companies are making their technology to interface with Iphones, not androids. Iphones have better-operating systems and are a much better product. By the way, this is coming from a former android user. If you want future tech that you're purchasing to operate the best, you'd better purchase an Iphone because the industries do not care about android. Additionally, even the best android phones out there now are copies of the Iphone operating systems. The Smooth 4 is now compatible with FiLMiC Pro! This is a HUGE upgrade for this gimbal. I have tried both the Smooth 4 and the DJI Osmo 2 and prefer the Smooth 4 1000%. My Osmo just sits in a box, hoping it will be used someday if anyone is interested.
Call me crazy, but I decided to buy this gimbal about a week ago despite many of the android functions reported as not working. My phone is a Huawei Mate 9. Many of the functions are still not working, but was pleased to find some reported earlier are now working. Example, switching video resolutions, including 4K; firmware update from phone. Pano still not working, zoom is not smooth. For me, most of the stuff I see myself using are working. One problem I'm still working on is ground-level shots - if I point the gimbal down the phone bracket hits part of the frame.
7:29 isn't portrait mode, it is sleep mode if you need to make a call or something and it turns off the motors. Portrait orientation is done by tilting the gimbal a certain way horizontally until it noticed and flips the phone.
My friend told me it is unable to balance iPhone XS Max.the maximum payload of Smooth 4 is 210g, and an iPhone XS max weights 7.34 oz, which is 208g. Adding any counterweight will exceed the maximum payload.

I bought my first gimbal a couple of weeks ago and now wish to get a small mini tripod, to hold it, say on a table top. Which would you recommend please ? You always see gimbals mounted on wee, small plastic tripods .. but are these the best bet. thank you
The Smooth 4 does not do 360 degree panning like the Smooth Q. It also doesn't roll since it has no joystick and roll is locked even in follow "all" mode. Basically 2 important Smooth series functions are crippled on the Smooth 4, it doesn't say these limitations on the box, is advertised for mobile film makers, and also sold as an upgrade/replacement to the Smooth Q. This is a downgrade from the Smooth Q.
I'd like to know if you've tested the Smooth 4 in SELFIE mode? How does it work with tracking your face as you walk, run or do other active tasks and record selfies for the blog, etc..?
I got my Smooth 4 today and am having an extremely difficult time calibrating this thing! The horizon is never level, it is always lower on the right hand side despite having properly installed my iPhone X. The calibration tools instructions are so bad that I have spent over an hour trying to calibrate and it is not working. Is there any step by step video instructional on how to properly complete the calibration?! I am so frustrated that I can't get this to work that I may be obligated to return it soon if I can't get any help with this.
I used it with Samsung galaxy s8, it worked perfectly. It also good for phones like IPhone, Redmi, Huawei, Samsung etc with some or model I forgot to mention. But not all models.

Got smooth 4 yesterday and I'm using Galaxy Note8. The software is fine, but the zooming function is not as smooth as iOS version. Hope they will update the app again soon.
How can you recommend a product not working with your android S9 ? 180 pano, 3x3, slowmo.... are not working on my s9+. Even the standard function stop working from time to time and you need to restart the gimbal!!!!...zy play is buggy (see users review on playstore)... what a value can you give to a gimbal who has a software not working correctly....you can't calibrate nor update firmware from the smartphone... you need a computer to do that!!!
you're right. I got my phone few hours before that review, and had never tested the smooth 4. As it happened, I thought it was my phone, or I was just doing something wrong. And as it is mostly software problem I thought, that it's something to be solved, asap. The hardware works perfect. However, I'm testing everything now and it seems not to be working anyways, so it's not my problem anymore, zhiyun's problem definitely.
We Talk UAV yes the hardware is good but the android software of that gimbal is not like the ios version. It will be good to review the software (android and iOS version) for each equipment in your future review. It will give a good idea for your followers.

Mine was on v1.75 before update (it did not resolve all issue but fix some issue and optimize some stuff) v1.76 - Optimize pan axis drift. v1.75 - Optimize Motor Protection to avoid Motor Overheat. - Optimize Bluetooth Communicating. v1.74 - Fixed Bluetooth malfunction prompt under certain circumstances. - Added indicator for wheel status recognition . - Improved motor current sampling. - Repaired the power failure during APP connection. v1.72 - Standby mode unaccessible via power button in case of unintended operation. - Fixed some bugs.
It should be mentioned that all advertised photo features only record in 4K. Even worse in Panomodus, here are the photos only a resolution of 4000x500 in the 3x3 Panos 3000x1000.

I am planning to buy a Zhiyun smooth 4 to use with my LG V10 phone. Internet says this phone weighs 195g where the maximum working load for the Zhiun smooth 4 is around 210g. Would this phone work along with this gimbal safely? Is there a possibility of motor damage? Is there any better option with slightly more capable to handle this bulky phone within this price range? I am using S8+ with a very light case.... But many a times the gimbal motors just put the phone down.... In that case I have to turn off the gimbal and then turn it on for making the gimbal take its usual posture of shooting.... Any help in this? Why does the gimbal motors goes down automatically... Is it the weight of the phone? I don't think S8+ with a light cover would be heavy enough for it.... Please help... Thanks in advance

Hello there, my biggest issue with gimbals is that it's very difficult to use an external microphone and, even if you succeed in mounting one onto the gimbal body with a ring or something similar, it will be in a fixed position, only pointing in one direction, not rotating, panning, etc. along with the phone. So: have you found a way around this problem? I own a brand news Rode Videomic Me and I'd love to use it on my S7 edge even when this is mounted on a gimble (which I still have to buy): any ideas? My Smooth 4 focus/zoom wheel works pulling forward but now backward on the focus setting. Some reason it works on the zoom setting however, any ideas how to fix? I noticed @ 12:30 in your video you can move it both directions.
There's no need to focus on anything with a phone, unless you're shooting macro. If possible, set your phone to "mountain" symbol and turn the AF off. You'll never miss a shot waiting for meaningless AF. It's not a DSLR, you won't isolate anything from the background. It's flat, sharp from arms length to infinity. You only need AF for macro shots.
Can you think of a reason why my phone screen looks different when I connect to the app? I am using an iPhone 8. I have icons vertically stacked on the left and right of the screen.
I had a different experience with the Zhiyum Smooth 4. It never worked and support would allow me to return/replace. It sets in the local land fill now for it's constant software/firmware errors. I bought a FreeFly Movi two weeks ago and have experienced a gimbal now that WORKS so I can add specifically that this gimbal is loaded but problems are too pervasive to make it one that you' d be able to use. It works as a gyroscope, but you don't buy it for that, you buy it to link with the phone via bluetooth. This is a poorly executed gimbal. I am far from the only person with problems.
Can I add a microphone to this? I have iphonex but microphone would be attached to the charging port that holds the iPhone. Would that affect the stabilization of smooth 4?

I had a hunch at the beginning of the video that the gimbal was going to be seen onscreen. The camera on the back of the phone is close to center.
Do you have to download the app? Or can you just film with the standard camera app?

It's not you. Video is really choppy. That's not how you demonstrate a gimbal.

Rather than Smooth 4, I prefer Feiyu vimble 2, As a mobile phone stabilizer,it can call a selfie device with the extension bar.

The deadcat is a cheap one from Amazon. The mic is Sennheiser EW 112-P G3

I am using S8+ with a very light case.... But many a times the gimbal motors just put the phone down.... In that case I have to turn off the gimbal and then turn it on for making the gimbal take its usual posture of shooting.... Any help in this? Why does the gimbal motors goes down automatically... Is it the weight of the phone? I don't think S8+ with a light cover would be heavy enough for it.... Please help... Thanks in advance

No man, i just got mine like a week ago and using it with an android, unlike the gimbal, the software is trash. Filmic pro is way better.
Hello there, my biggest issue with gimbals is that it's very difficult to use an external microphone and, even if you succeed in mounting one onto the gimbal body with a ring or something similar, it will be in a fixed position, only pointing in one direction, not rotating, panning, etc. along with the phone. So: have you found a way around this problem? I own a brand news Rode Videomic Me and I'd love to use it on my S7 edge even when this is mounted on a gimble (which I still have to buy): any ideas? iphone 7plus's weight and size compatible with smooth 4 but you need to take off the rugged case

My Smooth 4 focus/zoom wheel works pulling forward but now backward on the focus setting. Some reason it works on the zoom setting however, any ideas how to fix? I noticed @ 12:30 in your video you can move it both directions.

Can a lav mic plug into the phone still when using the gimbal or can it plug into the gimbal?
There's no need to focus on anything with a phone, unless you're shooting macro. If possible, set your phone to "mountain" symbol and turn the AF off. You'll never miss a shot waiting for meaningless AF. It's not a DSLR, you won't isolate anything from the background. It's flat, sharp from arms length to infinity. You only need AF for macro shots.

I had a different experience with the Zhiyum Smooth 4. It never worked and support would allow me to return/replace.
It sets in the local land fill now for it's constant software/firmware
errors. I bought a FreeFly Movi two weeks ago and have experienced a gimbal now
that WORKS so I can add specifically that this gimbal is loaded but problems are too pervasive to make it one that you' d be able to use. It works as a gyroscope, but you don't buy it for that, you buy it to link with the phone via bluetooth. This is a poorly executed gimbal. I am
far from the only person with problems.
Maybe the phone is a problem, not a gimbal.
I'm a oneplus user, and I'm returning my Smooth 4 cuz the Android app sucks. Unfortunately... I really hoped it would have worked
