The Asantehene of the Ashanti Empire sits in state in Memphis

  • The biggest traditional Dubar ceremony in Memphis, meant to unify, honor ancestors and pray for the prosperity of the land and people.
The ceremony included an entrance parade for the king, song, and dance, and gift offerings on Beale Street today! The Asantehene sat in state. #memphis
"Otumfuo," in the Asante language, means "All-Powerful Majesty." "Asantehene" means "King of the Asante."
Those are the titles of the dignitary from West Africa who is in Memphis this week to represent his home nation of Ghana as the Memphis in May International Festival celebrates what it calls (perhaps redundantly) "International Week" - a time to contemplate the festival's "honored country" instead of barbecue and Megan Thee Stallion.
Asante King Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will attend the Memphis in May Festival for its salute to Ghana.
Since his "enstoolment" in 1999, the Asante king - who will celebrate his 72nd birthday Friday in Memphis - has occupied what is called "The Golden Stool." Symbolically represented in silhouette on Asante or Ashanti flag, the Golden Stool is a literal object, carved from wood and inlaid with gold, that represents "the royal and divine throne of kings of the Ashanti people and the ultimate symbol of power," according to the African American Registry, an online database that covers "African American heritage in the world."
Our culture is so beautiful 🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭

It's not the wealth, it's the sheer display of our inner essence that says "this is who I am, take it or leave it" that makes african culture rich.

One thing you don’t know is that Brazil was where they relocated most of the Ashanti slaves that were captured and was seen as very spiritual dangerous to the slave masters. Most of the akomfour “fetish priest” those have dreadlocks were people of high spiritually and power the slave master seeing that decision to isolate them and took them to the Brazil and Caribbeans. In the book Anglo Asante war… when the English got to Kumasi, they were blown away by the splendour wealth and beautiful buildings, that they wrote and reported it back to England. They could not believe that a Kingdom in Africa could be that splendid and deep in tradition that rival the English . The Asante fought the English for 100 years. Also fun fact is the map of Africa when drawn only the Asante kingdom maintained it territories on the map, it never changed. I pray Netflix commission a series on this war, is griping stuff. With female chiefs going to war . Is just amazing read

Every step, every hand twist, every special expression of the dancers, communicates a message. A message only understood by those whom are being communicated to. In the past, these were the forms of non verbal communication styles used mostly during war times. Every stroke of the drum, informs and tells of what is to happen... a lot is being done with every aspect of the durbar.

Going to major cities where their people and descendance are to make the statement, "We see and note all of you contributions abroad and to our motherland". And to put the United States on notice, "Don't think we don't see how you treat the children/descendance of Africa, if we call our people home your nation will suffer in their absence".

Mass exodus of people of African descent back to the continent will bring America down. The white supremacist don't seem to be aware of this. But it hinges on the development of the African continent as a whole. If our leaders can put their acts together and strive to bring massive development to the motherland then our brothers in the diaspora will feel connected and proud to come back home.

So well said, bro Alex! So well said. Deep! This mixture of trying to force another culture into our sacred and rich ancestral culture, is exactly what has broken Ghana and Afruca as a whole, and caused so much confusion for us! White culture was forced on us, and yet, we like our old ancestral cultures and want to keep it, but as the decades go on, it's gotten harder and harder for us to hold onto what we were made of, and who we are abd are supposed to be! It's not working and has never worked since the British left our shores, now we are stuck with this half-baked culture that didnt belong to us in the first place, so we havent been completely food at doing it the right way, and now, we are stuck in the middle with half obroni ways and half Ghanaian ways, and trying to force to exist in the two completely different worlds, and that is the main reason why Africa, especially AMA GHANA has been in such sorry state since then, and getting worse. That's why Ghaba has never been able to stand firmly in her feet well! How can u know what to do and how to move forward with your life and be successful as a human being, when u are living in a constant state of identity crisis? We have no sense of identity, we dint know who we are, and even dknt have our own NAMES to start with. This such a deep deep sad situation. But hopefully with some generations to come, one day, Ghana/Ghanaians, will find their way back to knowing and embracing and ultimately, appreciating who God and our ancestors intended for us to be, with no more confusing mixture that we are forcing to be, by force! I hope u understand this sadness that I'm trying to say. Thanks for allowing me to express this long FACT, on your channel. Be good!
