Franco Zeffirelli, director of the acclaimed 1968 adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, brings you another powerful tale exploring a young couple's fiery passions in 1981's Endless Love.
Jade Butterfield (Brooke Shields) is a passionate 15-year-old beauty discovering the joy and pain of first love. David Axelrod (Martin Hewitt) is a 17-year-old student whose all-consuming desire for Jade turns to obsession. As their romance unfolds, their emotions become so intense that they threaten to destroy everything else they hold dear; their families, their sanity … and their future.
Featuring the unforgettable, smash hit theme song performed by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie, and an impressive supporting cast including early roles from James Spader, Ian Ziering, Jami Gertz, and - in his feature film debut - Tom Cruise, Endless Love is a truly iconic early '80s romantic drama.

Martin and I were pretty close friends and I knew him just before he became famous and several years after that. I remember us looking at the billboard of Endless Love above Sunset Boulevard near where he lived at the time on Horn Ave, and commenting on how surreal it was. He was very humble about his fame and never bragged about it. Great guy to hang out with. Lots of fun and never a dull moment. He was also very generous and would pay for things he knew his friends couldn't afford. He could tell you stories about some very famous people that you would never read about. Personal stories that would just make you go wow. I do remember he would get tons of fan mail at his apartment and one time he decided to call one of the fans who included her phone number. Her mom answered the phone and the girl was blown away that he had called and he thanked her for the kind letter and being a fan. Sweet and simple, but I'm sure she will never forget that call. I didn't. You're a good man Martin.

@@vickyrodz1122 that’s such a disgusting comment. Would you like it if someone said you’ve turned out to be ugly ?? Actually Martin is an extremely attractive older man. Lol. I’m 24 & I think he’s so cute , then or now. Everyone ages. & yes Tom Cruise is obviously more famous because he’s done more movies & stayed in the spotlight. For all we know, Martin wanted to start a family & settle down & focus on that aspect of his life. With the money Tom Cruise has, I’m sure he can afford all the expensive face creams & any procedures that will extend his youthful look. It’s easy to look “good” longer when you’ve got that much money. My advice to you though would to maybe not be such an evil person. Try having an open mind and not judging someone by their looks. Totally uncalled for.

I was a very naive, innocent high school senior in 1981. I remember going to the town theater at 17 to see this movie with my one & only boyfriend who was several years older. The sexual scenes were honestly shocking to me, but this movie . . . the beauty & passion of David & Jade’s love, the all-consuming desire they had for one another, the tenderness of the moment . . . it compelled me to decide to say yes to my boyfriend’s requests. My love for him was as deep as David & Jade’s, and four years later we married. This song was sung at the wedding! Sadly, he was no David - my life was filled for many years with grief & heartache as a result of a multitude of lies and betrayals. I held on, hoping that one day, somehow, he would change but he didn’t. It finally took my children to bring to light just how sinister his actions were and I knew I had no choice but to surrender my dream. The movie will always be a part of the memories of my life, and I still feel those same feelings when I watch it now,. Even though I am alone, I believe in the kind of love that David had for Jade and, Martin, you did an extraordinary job of making it seem so beautiful and real! 💕

Martin doesn’t get enough credit for how great he was in Endless Love. He was so good you could feel his pain. I think Brooke’s star was shining so bright at that time that it took away from everything else about the movie.

Totally agree! Martin’s acting was nuanced and powerful. The director didn’t even give him enough credit to carry his storyline without propping it up at times. Like did we really need Tom Cruise’s Billy to ‘give’ David the burning newspaper idea? Like, why could we have just seen David make a hasty decision in the moment of desperation.

I guess as a young teenage girl you never forget your first love, the character of David was portrait so well by Martin Hewitt that he made you want that kind of love, he made you believe in that powerful unconditional love. His curly black hair and those puppy dog eyes just melted your heart and gave you the dreams of one day finding it.. And I did it didn't end in marriage but it was my first love and it was just as powerful as it was portrait on screen. The sneaking around, the driving to places to make out 😅 because you had such a strict father. And losing your innocence at a tender age of 16 with boy you just couldn't get enough of. And that song on cassette played and played in my room. David(Martin Hewitt) you were my teenage crush and still are and the movie is too a favorite that transcends me back to that high school time in my life and puts a smile on my face everytime I watch it ❤ so thank you..

I have just finished viewing Endless Love for the first time and I’m 53! What an intense movie and surreal acting. I like to think Jade later thought about everything and realized she still loved David and was coming to see him. Why James Spader always plays a jerk is hysterical! Martin certainly was a handsome young man in this movie and still is to me. I think we’ve all had that first love that got under our skin in a way no other ever had. There’s nothing like that innocent first crush and or love ;)

In 1981, I was 19 and dating one of my brothers friends and he wasn’t happy about it. My boyfriend and I went to the movie together, and the movie had so many similarities to my life, the brother issue, the huge house like we had, making out with with my parents right upstairs and me coming down in my night gown all happened before we even saw the movie. I did break up with him (for 30 days!) and he was so upset but he didn’t try to burn the house down! lol I was nowhere as young or as beautiful as Jade/Brooke but my brother played soccer (Tom Cruise scene) and I snuck my boyfriend into my bedroom a few times! lol. In the end, we got married, and I even had “An Endless Love” written on our wedding invitations. It’s been 36 years of marriage and this will always be my favorite song and movie as long as I live!! ❤️

Martin you did an amazing job playing David. I'm sorry to hear about what happened to you in high school. What your friend and that girl did was wrong. It really hurts to have your heartbroken. I had the same experience in high school. I had a crush on this boy and I thought he liked me the same way I liked him but I was wrong. He only liked me as a friend. I was heartbroken too and I cried as well. It took me a long time to get over him. Afterwards I went to college and I slowly moved on with my life. So I guess you can say we have something in common and I have something in common with your character David. Only I didn't do anything harmful. You and Brooke did amazing playing David and Jade. They are my favourite movie couple and Endless Love is one of my favourite movies. Funny thing is I knew the song Endless Love but never knew it was a movie. And after I watched it i started loving the movie. Only it was the remake though. I think you and Brooke did amazing in that movie. My favourite part in the movie was the love scenes. I love the movie, but the real standout performer is Martin. I do believe this was Martin's first movie, and he did an excellent job. I felt more for his character than I did Brooke's character. Great looks, and great acting job. I just rewatched the movie again, and had to come back and comment again. Shirley Knight is great also. As much as I love Brooke, it is Martin's performance that really got to me.

It was a bit risqué for the time but as a singer the draw for me was the title song by Lionel Ritchie. 40 some years later the draw for me is still the song but now watching it as an adult I appreciate the innocence of those characters feelings. He looks and sounds the same in the sense that if we are all lucky enough we live long enough to become the youthful silver fox version of ourselves! You’re expecting the dark hair floppy hair of the character but the eyes and the countenance are really where we are at, don’t you think? My late husband was older than me and his beauty grew with time to me. I watched this film again recently after becoming a young widow a few years ago (early 40s) and wanted to search for powerful love stories, both good and toxic, and obsession was something cathartic to watch in the midst of my grief. (When I say silver fox I mean it in the highest regard. I loved my husband’s silver hair, and when I get enough of it myself I’m planning on being one of those elegant women who maintain gorgeous silver coiffure)! I think when they cast for the show Gossip Girl they cast the Dan character totally as his character in this film! Down to the brooding and the dark looks! What a fun homage!

I wore my soundtrack album of this movie OUT back in the 90’s. My VHS tape too. I was so happy to see it was finally released on Blu-Ray not long ago so I treated myself to it. Yes, I love this movie more than “The Blue Lagoon” even, because Martin was far more handsome than Christopher Atkins! One of my favorite 80’s movies for sure. They sadly just don’t make ‘em like this anymore.

this is the only movie i've seen him in. both brooke and martin were perfect for their parts. i saw it at the theatre when i was in my teens. i wonder what he is up to nowadays. shields pretty much has kept herself in the spot lite in one way or another all these yrs. she has accomplished so much in her life time. many other actors dont have her background. shes pretty much has scratched off many things- acting, modeling, spokes person, has her own brand product, has endorsed many non brooke products, theatre, radio, has been a hostess, has been in many, a many bob hope specials.... and the list still continues...

Martin did amazing playing David. I felt bad that his best friend took his girlfriend away from him when he was in high school. He didn't deserve that. I can relate. Back in my high school days there was a guy that I had a crush on and I thought he liked me the same way but he only liked me as a friend and I heartbroken and I cried as well. After I went to college I slowly moved on with my life. Endless Love is one of my favourite movies. I like both versions. Too bad the original didn't have a happy ending like the remake did. I love happy endings. That's just me. Jade and David are one of my favourite movie couples
