From a filmmaker / Photographers perspective I will share with you why I chose to go with the 16" MacBook Pro with 64GB's of unified memory and the M1 Max chip instead of 32GB's with the M1 Pro chip. Don't make a mistake by misunderstanding how unified memory works.

I’ve never needed more than 16gb of Ram and I edit canon R6 10 Bit footage. In my opinion 32gb of Ram is more than enough.
Indeed 32 more than enough specially with that high bandwidth
The SSD is really fast anyway, so even if your CPU needs to do some swapping, you won't notice a thing.
Would you recommend the highest M1 Max chip for video and motion graphics?
R6 10 bit can be taxing but not anywhere near what multiple streams of 6K 12 bit ProRes RAW or ProRes 4444XQ with both primary and secondary color corrections can do. Especially if you begin to add any motion graphics or multiple tracked power windows. But hey 64GB is definitely not for everyone. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🙂
I edit my channel using an base level M1 MacBook Air. It has 8 GB RAM. Using activity monitor, I never use more than 7GB. I edit 4K HQ footage form the R5 in prores out fo the Ninja. Sometimes, I edit canon log. The M1 with FCPX can edit just as fast as the iMac Pro 2017. It's even 60 percent faster at exporting. I will be editing more 8K footage, and the M1 MBA is not optimized for 8K, but for 4k, its finer as is 8GB or 16GB for family use. For professional use, spend the extra to get he M1 Max for the video encoding capabilities of the chip. I've yet to find anyone that really explores how much ram is needed... However, it you're using Divinci resolve or premier, you will need more ram. I'd recommend 32GB for 4K editing.
I got maxed out specs on the 16” with 2tb storage but it won’t be here until around mid December 😭

@@Abe_Stewart_Music I put mine only yesterday and the ETA is Dec 16-21, I was a little late to the party... but now I'm considering canceling it and ordering from another 3rd party online store that will deliver much faster, perhaps from B&H, BestBuy etc... otherwise there is about a month and half wait time for me.
The main "problem" with the new MBP is the display, it's better than most monitors. You cannot use it in a clamshell mode now as you are missing out on the best thing in the laptop !!
I didn't think of it that way! I was thinking more how the monitor is going to change the HDR world and allow creators to push out more HDR content. Before monitors of this caliber would be out of reach for most creators. Interesting point! Thanks for watching!
Quick tip- If you bought the new macbook and do not have budget for 4k monitor and you do video/photo editing, buy a 1080 p monitir and run the preview in your laptop

Now that we are a few months into it, and I myself got a maxed out 16"... based on the tests with the baseline M1 Pro vs Max... the differences are not as extreme as you would think. In many cases, M1 Pro is enough, and when it comes to RAM, 32GB vs 64GB based on the comparisons I have seen don't seem to make much of a difference. I am returning my maxed out 16" and going for a 14" M1 Pro with 2TB as the higher storage is actually more useful to me than anything. As an FCP user, any of these new machines will fly! This is a really exciting time for Apple users. Apple silicon kicks butt.
Absolutely you dont need a M1 Max, a M1 Pro is sufficient, i would then use the money saved to increase storage, i own a M1 Max 1TB, 32gb, it's overkill and wished i looked into it much more, before spending the extra money.
Unless you do any gaming at all on downtime. Then the max becomes clear as day.
I think the differences ARE extreme when you do a lot of GPU intense use llike Blender(3D modelling) and Gaming..
Nice video. Just one clarification, you are not going to "wear out" an SSD. The devices manage the use of the memory components and to use up the memory would require a phenomenal number of read writes over many many years.
It is not about the CPU, RAM, or Storage. It all depends on what you'll do on a daily basis with these machines. Most people will get the M1 MAX with 64GB ram just to create PowerPoint slides and Word documents.
Totally agreed! I’ve recommended the M1 MacBook Air to a lot of people since it will fit most peoples needs. For me I’ve been waiting for some time and really hope this new machine will help me get back to being creative without worrying if my machine can handle it. Thanks for watching and commenting!

You are totally right, I took the max 64 for the same reason. I don’t want any bottleneck nor SSD swapping now and in the next 5 years, and I only use Xcode.

Resolve, After Effects, Cinema4D, Lightroom, and Blender are all solid reasons to go high on RAM. I ordered 64GB as well.
It’s crazy how many people have been commenting that it’s a waste to get 64GB. I personally think now that the memory is shared it’s even more important to go with 64GB. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@GlenReed Because on most workflows.. 16gb is enough... Even on video editing... The benefit of 64GB over 16GB is not worth the price to most people... Lets not forget these are not cheap devices..
Been editing on m1 16gb and never did i feel like i needed more memory... But applications like blender.. Thats where you will see a significant benefit from more memory because it allows you to load more textures and larger scenes... But for video editing 16gb/32gb is good for most people
@@GlenReed To me, not getting the 64GB model would be like someone buying a base model supercar. If you can warrant the cost of a $250k supercar, surely you can afford a $350k upgraded version. If you can't afford the latter, you probably shouldn't be buying either.

You are among the few professionals who actually need and can make use of the power of these new laptops. These are not average consumer devices like iPads, iMacs and MacBook Airs. Too bad thought that Apple didn't came with a M1 Pro/MAX offering for Mac mini.
Yes I would agree! It is a huge investment and really it’s a tool for someone like me. Definitely not something everyone should run and buy just because of the hype. the 64 gb macbook pro 16 inch with m1 max for a photographer will be a overkill unless you edit 8k or 12k videos into those baby beast machines and doing a lot of 3d video transitions
Photography actually takes a lot of memory for heavy composites. But I definitely do a lot of 6k ProRes RAW which my current system doesn’t handle well. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🙂

@@GlenReed 64GB is wayyyyy overkill. 16GB is more then enough for Lightroom and photoshop editing. I have no issues editing thousands of large RAW files with my M1 Air 8gb. This isn’t just basic edits either. Color grading, multiple gradient filters, healing tools, dodging and burning, and sometimes even stacking photos for Realestate photography. Never stumbled one bit. Don’t waste your money on 64GB of Ram unless you are doing crazy stuff like heavy 3D rendering or 8k video editing with multiple layers.
I must be doing a lot of crazy stuff then 😂. I’m constantly pushing the limits of my M1 Mac Mini with 16GB.
I was heavily leaning towards the 14" for lighter weight and portability, but I didn't think about the cooling angle. That makes a lot of sense.
A lot of reviews have come out showing how the 14” fans turn on much sooner while the 16” rarely come on. Thanks for watching!

@@7SeasOfQ I bought it, returned it and did an awesome PC build instead. For me, I wanted the freedom in this case to have 12 TB of nvme ssd for lightning fast storage amount other things. I believe that level of storage in a Mac is about $3000. So it just wasn’t the fit for me.
From all the tests I’ve seen doesn’t matter how much RAM you have it still uses the swap cache on the drive and that’s the case in the Mac Pro with 192 gigs of RAM down to these new machines.
You are correct it will still use swap memory regardless, it's mainly a question of how much it needs to use to keep memory pressure down. The lower memory pressure the faster the system runs. Hope this clarifies things a bit. Thanks for watching!

Guys this isnt Ram its Unified Memory, seriously theres is a massive difference between that and Ram. Its like having 64 GB of Video Memory

My main usage is photography. I've ordered a 16" with 64GB (It hasn't arrived yet). I don't really need 64 GB currently, but in several years time? I am upgrading from a 10 year old 17" MacBook Pro, and hope to use the new laptop for many years.

I am upgrading from a M1 Mac mini with 16GB RAM to a 16" M1 Max MBP with 64GB unified memory and 2TB SSD.

Get what you need, 99% of users will be on the most powerful computer they ever used with a 16gb M1 pro. The SSD swap usage is real though, getting more ram will give you more longevity

I do a large amount of multi-tasking - photos, browser w/20 tabs, mail, soon getting FinalCut to edit multiple 4k streams, with clips viewable in QuickTime and pics in Preview, all simultaneously. Would like that same performance 2, 3, 4-6 years from now. This will be my only device. Ordered the Max 16" 64ram.
@@PreviousAccount528 correct it will always use some swap memory, but the thing is how much will it use. If memory pressure is high it has to use more to keep the system running smoothly.
did the 16" w/64GB and 2TB personally. Super excited. My 2018 MBP is simply unable to keep up with my daily demands, and the 2020 M1 MBP I have is definitely right there where I need it to be, but I have many use cases where I can definitely feel its limitations as well, so I traded it in on the 2021.

Have been checking out reviews and benchmarks and some people got better results with the 64gb on davinci resolve than people using an RTX3090 desktop gpu with an 16 core cpu and 128gb ram in 8K footage. This laptop is hella expensive but performing like an expensive piece of equipment and barely using energy to do so. For the first time I can say Apple made something that is worth it's price tag. Also it is small, powerful and with an display that is the best laptop display in the world. Really amazing product.

Best laptop display is the world seems a reach, certainly better then most and in the top, but there are oled laptops out there with wider colour volume and per pixel brightness. Possibly lacking peak brightness, but otherwise oled is hard to beat.

I’d love to know how well the new MacBook Pro works in sunlight or outdoors. I was playing with one in store and surprised it wasn’t brighter. It may have been a colour profile limiting perhaps. Certainly a lovely display. Didn’t seem backlight glow, but again hard to know in a brightly lit showroom.

I have a 10 year old Intel iMac that still works (super duper slow now but still works).
I love the portability, performance, battery, display size/screen, Thunderbolt4 ports, hdmi port, etc., etc.
Since I use Logic Pro for recording music & with some video & photo editing (planning on getting Final Cut soon) this computer should serve my needs for many years, many years to come.

64 GB ram option was around us for a while now. And I don’t really think anyone that does only video editing should buy a 64 GB memory option, it’s too expensive and way too much power. It’s not like if you purchase the 32GB option you’re going to face problems. These machines are extremely good, energy efficient and there’s no any thermal problem because they’re not getting too hot.
I'd still like to see the practical difference between 32/64. I'm not sure this video actual explains it - just a bit of speculation. If anyone has both the 32 & 64, make a video showing an example of the 32 crapping out. I'd guess 64gb helps a little for buffering 8k video, but doesn't really overcome any concerning real-world bottleneck of the 32gb version.

There’s 1-3 seconds difference in all tests between 16,32,64. Seconds in massive encoding tests even. Only difference is the SSD swap

Check out Luke Miani, The Tech Chap, and Verge reviews. They have great comparison test reviews on the topic. Reason ended up buying the 32 version. 64 has no real world usage advantage.
i had a hard time choosing between the 14 max and 16max and i went with the 16"one just because i want better battery and better thermals. I don't mind the extra bit of weight..

Judging by how the 13" handles thermals, doubt the 14" will have any issues even maxed out.

@@getawaystherapy like most things the extra battery power amount is determined by how powerful the other components are its powering. If getting to top end Max processor it'll use more battery than the entry level Pro processor - that'll effect battery life somewhat.
Here we go with the supposed Apple "tax" again. Dell XPS 17 UHD+ laptop with i9 32GB RTX 3060 = $3249, Apple MacBook Pro M1 MAX 64GB = $3499 and the Mac has better screen, faster SSD, better battery life, more stock memory, video codecs accelerators, etc., so $250 more seems more than fair to me.

I went for the 14 inch maxxed out, hyped to have a beast of a pc that i can still use on an airplane and other portable scenarios my current touchbar 15 is too big. Both models are gonna dominate the laptop game

I did the same. There is no difference in performance between the 14 and 16. I need something more portable. The 16 only has bigger speakers, screen and battery. But I dont need all that cause the 14 already has 17 of battery which is more than enough for me.
@@armando.visuals there is a difference in performance i'm afraid, the 16 inch will have better thermal performance and has a higher power limit 145 watts i believe, therefore more power will be fed to the chip inside + the boost mode only on the 16 inch max

I work in IT and usually do some coding and also run a windows VM in parallels. I just went for base 16” with 16gb RAM

Not gonna lie, I think you'll be surprised when benchmarks come out for the different ram configurations. 16GB is enough for 4k video editing, and 32GB will be more than enough for full-time 8k video editing. 64GB is aimed at 3d modellers working in gaming, not video editors, the exception to this being people that work in VR 360 video.

Interesting video, however did you actually do any benchmark or real world test on the new laptops rather than the old ones? All the videos I’ve seen shows that the 16 and 32 MB ram M1 pro keeps up with even the craziest multitasking feats
Every workflow requires different needs. I currently have 3 M1 systems and although they are fantastic it’s very easy for me to push them to their limits. With 16GB I regularly use an additional 16GB of swap memory and still need more. If you don’t need that much definitely don’t spend the money, buy what you need. Yet most reviews on high power output suggest the standard M1Pro with 16GB is fine for 99% of users who edit 4K and 6k
If you are doing basic cuts and simple grading I’m sure that would be fine. I edit often on a M1 Mac Mini with 16GB and regularly use 16GB of additional swap memory. But it is able to chug through lighter stuff. Definitely only buy what you need.Thanks for watching!
I have a 2015 15" with 16gb and 256gb ssd. I edit in FCP and Lightroom and was always running out of available memory. Just last month my internal ssd failed with 186 terabytes written to it in the 4 years I owned it. That's 127GB of writes per day, every day, for 4 years. I now use an external usb3 ssd as my boot drive. Looking forward to finally having 64gb.
I believe just like the 2015 models this new one is going to be a MacBook to keep for years. And just like in it case if you want the SSD to last it’s worth getting 64GB. Congrats on the purchase! Thanks for watching!
@@GlenReed The M2(?) based Mac Pros will blow you away from the rumors I have heard. They're as "no-one will ever find a need for that much x, y and z" in the era of M1 machines as they were when the 1.5TB Mac Pros were released Way Back When.

True. Its just a laptop. I have had 5 macs through the last 15 years. The emhasis is not really whst u need is it - this discussion is like big brother telling everyone that u dont deserve a consumer product. For my usecase i can use pen and paper or my 5 year old gaming rig. It seems great, my 2015 15 was expensive too - now i can hardly turn it on without fans screaming. That said the diminishing returns is clearer and clearer. Btw doing recommendations without testing is just naive - sofar the 14 base is just as fast a 16 maxed out one in many workloads. I bet u that this time a maxed out one is the worst buy u can do. Maybe save money or buy 2 macbooks laptops instead… or a imac and a macbook pro. The 1tb upgrade is the only upgrade i will make, but then again im not a youtube editor - so i shouldnt get one anyway. I dont need/deserve one.
Good thought. But, regarding ram, I don’t understand your logic, the more you have the more the system uses, this is just how OS works, the same is true on windows too. You will always see a high percentage of ram use if the programs are using your ram properly. As an example, I upgraded my ram from 32 to 64 on my XPS and the percent use by various programs stayed similar, I also did not gain any noticeable performance increase.
I’m not saying some people won’t benefit from 64, im just saying that using the idea of “most of my ram is being used therefore I need more” is not the best when it comes to memory purchasing decisions (obviously this logic is safe when it comes to your SSD storage, but not ram as ram is used on the basis of how much you have, a proper OS like OS X uses as much available ram as there is to optimize your experience with various apps it doesn't mean you don't have enough - ie you could be at 128 and the system may scale up your ram way past 64gb).
I have observed this too over the past few years... The system just hogs up whatever amount you have :(
totally agree with you. It all depends on OS process sheduling. simply when you have more memory, smart OS reduce sharing and use the ram itself, so more ram usage will be shown. With less memory, the OS uses the ssd as a secondary ram and suspends processes that are waiting for IO. If your ram and ssd have the same built tech, you don't notice a difference but if the ssd has slower/cheaper tech you probably notice the difference.
As a mixing and mastering engineer, these laptops in general are truly insane. Coming from a crappy HP 32gb ram i9 12th gen, just the fact that I'm no longer dealing with loud fans makes my work bearable. These investments can easily last you 7+ years if you take care of them.
Definitely! It’s crazy how much of a jump in performance and efficiency these laptops brought to the table. Just ordered the M2 Ultra Studio and can’t wait to finally be able to playback a video timeline with noise reduction in real time without using cache or proxies 🤯
Ordered an M1 Max 16” Macbook Pro with 64GB RAM & 2 TB storage. My IDEs easily take up over half of that RAM at times. And guys, remember you’re not buying this machine to serve you just for an year or two , they’ll easily last for 4+ years.

I agree, 90% of people don’t need a MacBook Pro and they should just stick to the Mac Air. I always believe to max out Memory for future usage so I can have a machine that performs longer than 2years. Sometime I think people are blinded by short vision and it’s wild how consumers are ok with spending £2000 for upgrades they don’t need and falling into the Apple Cart circus.

For music production you don't need all those GPU cores on the Max but it makes sense to get the 16" Pro 1TB model because you will have more screen and less fan noise.

The truth is that M1 max with 32Gb ram is the second most powerful configuration in the trim. M1 max doubled the bandwidth compared with M1 pro, which is already faster. M1 MAX with 32Gb and 1tssd is the sweet point for MOST OF PROSUMERS! Sure we know 64 is better, but how much? Don't mislead the customer before you have comparison data between 32 and 64. Not a lot of people are dealing with 6k, 8k video footage. If only the 64gb version can provide what you called "right" performance, why do the market segmentation???

This video is only to explain the reason why I chose this configuration as it may be a few reasons some didn't think about. For video editing the 64GB make sense. My tasks are mainly (native) compiling & debugging and some light image progressing. So I think the 32GB are enough. Taking the max model makes still sence because clang (xcodes compiler) is really bad with cache cohesiveness.

I have a 2018 Mac Mini with 64 GB of RAM which I use as a dedicated 'music' computer. The programs I run aren't CPU intensive but they are definitely memory intensive as I routinely use mid-50GB of RAM so anything less than 64 GB wouldn't cut it. Not that this video is about music, but to say categorically that you cannot use 64 GB of RAM in a Mac is simply untrue.

@@derekbaker3279 I guess you're probably going to do post production? I do mainly live playing and use GrandOrgue and Hauptwerk, both of which load sample sets into memory. The entire sample set. That's why I suspect that even low powered CPUs can run the program very well (my Mac Mini is a 4-core i3!) because all it's doing is playing samples, which isn't CPU intensive but is RAM intensive. My biggest sample set requires 54 GB of RAM so add a few more GBs for the actual program and OS. As for actual work, I'm an architect by trade so I still mainly use a PC for that as most software for architecture and engineering are Windows/"Unix" based. Hopefully that will change - I'm thinking of just getting an M1 MAX Mac, probably the Mini if it has the same specs/performance! The biggest RAM hog is when I render out a high resolution 3D visualization with global illumination. I don't normally go beyond 32 GB for that type of work, but since unified memory, as mentioned in this video, is shared with the GPU and CPU and since you can't just pop in extra RAM as needed, if I was exclusively a Mac user, I'd go for 64 GB. If you're using your computer for work, then honestly a few $$$ for more memory is just the cost of doing business. If you're not using your computer for work, then an M1 MAX shouldn't even be on the radar.
But GPU uses a huge amount of RAM only in games. In regular tasks, it needs about 128-256 MB of RAM.

But I can say to get the full advertised speed and greater ssd life you need to go with at least 2TB. I think 2TB is a good spot unless you are editing high resolution RAW footage like me. One way to mitigate the wear and tear on the main drive is to have a separate scratch disk set up. In this way you can go with a lower capacity drive, if you are budget constrained.
Correct! I use several Nvme scratch drives daily. It also helps speed things up so the internal ssd can focus mainly on the OS and application tasks. Plus it saves on Apples crazy expensive storage prices. Thanks for the comment 😀

That was exactly the choice I was faced with and I went with 64GB. For storage you can use external drives but there is no way to increase memory once you purchase it. I’m also a photographer and aspiring filmmaker and I agree for the most part. I’m struggling cause these MacBooks are SO EXPENSIVE. Like I want to save money and lean towards the M1 pro but I know that after 2-3 years I would probably need to upgrade again. However if I get the 16 inch MacBook Pro with the 32 GPU Core Max 1 chip, with 64GB of ram and 2-4 TB of ssd. That laptop should keep me going for the next 5 years.
If all you do is photography, either base model will last you years. Specially if you upgrade to 32GB RAM. but any base model will last you years. No need for 2-3 year upgrade.

@@Applefanboy2012 I would tend to agree with you. I do photo ad well as video editing and I know video editing can be an intense task for any computer. Especially when stacking multiple 4K clips with layers and effects, etc. However I’m going to do much more research before buying one.
These are definitely very expensive, get what you need with a little room to grow but maxed out is not for everyone.
One thing to keep in mind though is when you do upgrade your MacBook will still have a decent value if you time it right. I sold my almost maxed out $4500 2019 16” for $3300 a couple months ago. Thanks for watching 🙂

Have you used an M1 in the past ? From my experience, I rarely every went beyond 14GB of ram usage editing 6k red raw or when rendering. I highly doubt that anything past 32gb will be useful for photo or video editing unless you’re doing much 3D rendering or heavy vfx.
I use the M1 Mac Mini 16GB everyday! Photo editing when doing multiple multilayer composites having both lightroom and photoshop open can be very memory intensive. Just with photo editing I hit 16GB of swap memory just about every session. As for video editing I use a lot of 6K ProRes RAW in Final Cut Pro and then export as ProRes 4444 XQ to Davinci Resolve. Since both the CPU and GPU share the memory I can easily push the memory pressure high. Especially when applying grouped clips with both pre clip and post clips nodes with noise reduction and film grain, not to mention any masking or secondary color corrections. But everyone has a different workflow and I happen to use a lot of resources. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment 😀
@@GlenReed there is no such thing as too much ram but the price is steep. Just saw a test with 4x 8k prores raw streams and only 26.35GB of ram was used. I'm happy with 32GB.
That’s awesome! ProRes RAW is VERY efficient! But most don’t realize that 90% of the time needs noise reduction since the camera will do no internal processing. Most machines can simply play it back without issue. Get what you need and definitely don’t spend more than you should. 🙂
What do you guys think is the coolest specs available to choose? Is 16GB cooler than 32GB ram? I guess 32GB could be cooler because less need to swap memory on SSD.
Thank you to someone that has tested, temperature is everything for me. Hate the fan noise that comes with higher temp.
Regarding the extra cooling in the 16" - Another youtuber tested the 14" MBP on a blanket with the bottom fans and intake covered, and only saw a fan increase of 500 rpm (3500 to 4000) and did not increase the temperature at all. In fact, he couldn't do anything to get the temperature over 55 deg C. The only difference was the fan speed - the 14" made a slight noise at 3500 rpm while the 16" remained whisper quiet at 1500-2000 rpm.

I always thought that the storage upgrade on Mac’s was a rip off, BUT this one totally makes sense and I actually think it’s a bit of a bargain because the speeds of these SSDs, you really can’t get them anywhere else on the market at the moment. Up to 7.4GB/s read speeds is insane

Agree. I'm looking at 8TB. It's an extra $2,200 from Apple, but that's only $700 more than one from OWC, and the Apple drive is built-in and 6x faster according to what I've seen. And since I'd want at least 2TB of space for whatever, I'd need to upgrade the SSD internally to 2TB anyway ($400 more), which makes the difference in total cost between the blazing fast Apple 8TB v. 2TB + 8TB external only $300.
The question is. M1 pro 16 GPU cores 32 Gb ram or M1 Max 24 GPU cores 32 Gb ram. Which is the best balance?
I would much rather go with the M1 Max 24 core GPU with 32GB. It will give you higher memory bandwidth with much better cooling. Hope this helps 😀

@@furian89 When the SOC is tested one or two GPU cores may be underperforming. Rather than throwing the whole SOC away the defective cores are disabled, the remaining GPU cores are perfectly functional. No cores are "dying".
Remember with the Mac pro accelerator card only encodes prores, doesn’t decode. The processors in the max encode and decode.

There is no downside to getting the maximum amount of RAM. These systems are going to beg us to keep adding stuff (layers or tracks or effects) to projects because it can handle anything and one day we may find that 32 gb isn't enough and then what?

@@matatoto9805 I don't know if that's true. I'm a snobby creator so I never consider my system's resources and won't notice a problem until it stops cooperating. So if it allows me, I'm going to keep going without ever considering its limits. I'm not going to do anything that I think is an inconvenience to me. That means I will never close programs. I will never delete tracks I don't need. I will never disable effects or plug ins that I'm no longer using. Out of sight, out of mind. Why would I close a video game when it takes forever to open? I'll render multiple files while simultaneously transcoding others. I can't be bothered to close tabs in Chrome. I will behave as if I have unlimited resources and will always expect instant responses to my requests. Under those conditions I think the limit can be reached before M3 Pro Max comes out.
Had the 14”32core, 64 ram. Returned it because well that display on the 16” is very impressive.
I instead got the 16” max with 32 gb ram and 1 tb. I think for someone whose main work load is 4k and occasional 6k braw I went with plenty.

I went full HAM on buying The mbpro16 m1x 64 as well. As a product designer I did have older model w 500g storage and 16g ram but over the last few years, I've been getting into more 3d modeling and have had to make movies for the app mock-ups i designed to the point i maxed out my machine's capabilities it could no longer handle the fast workflow

Great Video! Over the years as software has developed it has also become more reliant on system resources not least the CPU and RAM. Apple knows this thats why they implemented the memory swap algorithm.
It is definitely wiser to try upgrade the RAM to at least 32GB as this will improve the viability and longevity of the purchaser.
Obviously there is no point pursuing the M1Pro or Maxx for basic browsing emailing etc that Air or M1 MacBook Pro are more than sufficient.
Although just because Apple offer the M1Pro and Maxx machines with 16GB as standard it makes more sense to consider upgrading to 32GB Of RAM to be able to truly exploit the M1 Pro at least and/or the Maxx as a complete computing system.
In addition upgrading to at least a 2TB SSD also makes pefect sense as the OS and Applications are steadily growing in size. In the near future a 512GB SSD will feel like 256GB SSD if not already. The point of a laptop is to be able to have it totally self contained, minimising peripherals etc.
Its been a year or so now and it is evident that many are selling their machines because they are not adequately spec'd and or we're purchased inappropriately.
There is no one size fits all with the MBP range and it really doe's come down to buying the machine that will serve you sufficiently at the time of purchase and at least 2-3years down the track let alone save you a decent amount of money and frustration.
Unless you use a lot of 8K footage, 64GBs is pointless really. 64GB of RAM is really beneficial for complex high-poly 3D modeling, which I doubt these macs will be really capable of even doing. But for 4K complex projects and motion graphics, 32GBs of RAM should be sufficient.
Those extra u$400 would be way better spent in upgrading the SSD drive from the standard 1TB configuration to 2TBs of storage, specially if you're going to work with 4K RAW footage.
I use multiple streams of 6K ProRes RAW and ProRes 4444 XQ regularly. But you are correct for most people 64GB would be overkill. It will be awesome to see what these machine are truly capable of. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

I went with the 16" Max 64 gb 8tb due to using the same laptop for the past decade. To me I paid top dollar for a fully functioning chip instead of paying thousands for chips essentially that are considered defective & garbage but sold by Apple in order to continue making profits

Have to say this is the first M1 Pro/Max video that the guy actually understands how chips work especially swapping and the overhead it creates. If I decided to order a MBP I will probably get the M1 Pro with 64GB RAM because I do music not video so don't need all those extra GPUs. I do need the RAM for sound libraries and plug-ins. Music is all timing depended so being able to keep things in memory helps to cut down on latency. Cool video.

I had 32GB in my 1st gen Mac Pro 1,1. 64GB is no big deal at all for a modern workstation-class machine. Yes, "16 is the new 32" on m1, but 128GB is also no big deal for a modern workstation.
The big issue for me on m1 is that you can't boot-camp into Windows anymore and you must virtualize, and virtualization is a pig for memory.

I’m not totally sure about Big Sur and The new macOS, but I know the previous versions would not use any hard drive ram caching when system memory was 32 GB or more. But of course this was all with Intel machines…. These new ones will most likely operate very differently and I highly doubt 7.4 GB per second is going to be a bottleneck for black magic da Vinci or any other software. At least not a noticeable one. But I will look forward to your tests. I went with the 32 GB one terabyte SSD so that I didn’t have to wait for the five weeks to get my laptop. Mine should arrive on Tuesday.
Swap memory is used regardless of how much ram you have, its mainly how much the system has to use to keep memory pressure down that's the problem. 7+GB/s is definitely fast but is still handled differently and will be sharing that speed with other processes. Imagine in Davinci Resolve you are pulling multiple streams of 6, 8, or 12k footage from the ssd while running the application and performing swap memory tasks. I don't think you can compare Intel and Apple Silicon architectures when talking about memory. Also, the SSD's are massively faster on the new MacBook pro meaning that swap is a whole lot faster. Still, if you need to convince yourself that you needed 64GB, fine. It's a nice little luxury. ;-) Will be good to see these in real world use t see how much memory they will use.

@@blackandcold But that's not really an engineering point of view. I have 12GB of RAM and use Xcode and Blender and other demanding applications and have no real problems. Could I do with more RAM? Sure. I find it slows if I run a VM, because you have to dedicate RAM to that. Also the Simulator in Xcode is a resource pig. But other than that, I rarely have issues with not enough RAM. I have ordered the new 16" M1 Max with 32GB RAM and think that will be fine for the next 5 years. After all I've had 12GB for the last 8 years.
Let's wait till tomorrow and see how benchmarks turn out. Not everyone needs 64GB of RAM

I do my heavy lifting at home, in desktop studio. Really, I want a specced out M1 Max DESKTOP which will offer more bang for the buck than ANY laptop. Why spend top money on a laptop at all, whose only advantage is portability? And even so, with the possibility of a Mini Pro, maybe not even then... I say, wait.

Exactly, subscribed ✅: also Apples’s SSDs have a MTBF. The less swap, the less SSD failures. Also Photoshop or Affinity Photo uses big chunks of memory. AP I use for post prod of 360° panos at 250 to 300 megapixel resolution, on my Intel MBP 16” the 64 GB are completely used. Hint: AP flies at least 10x faster as Ps when working on stuff like that, Adobe unfortunately can not truly deal with Apple hardware and that - afaik - didn’t get better for ARM/Apple Silicon; I assume Adobe has some kind of interpreter layer in the software, still accessing some 16 bit object code, once compiled in the 1990’s and the source code got somehow lost. Being a marketing company, they squeeze still money out of that, since hated subscription model more than ever. But that’s of course a wild conspiracy theory…😜. Besides: can’t understand the many dislikes, best and perfect information here.

I work in HPC, deep learning area, su happy to see next puget test or some DL, AI test, but first sight 64GB shared ram at 400gbs is perfect and comparable with RTX 3090, RTX A6000, A100 akcelerators, so if somobedy can compile linux directly for ARM64 it can be great step to FOG distributed HPC. Like scifi movie just plug 10 pieces of M1 notebook to HPC docking stations and your dream HPC just began...
Look at some real life stress tests between various memory configurations. The SSD interface is so fast that using swap disk even under extreme payload introduces about 5% penalty over higher RAM model.
The ssd is fast but the problem is you will add more wear on the ssd which in turn will slow it down over time. Apple doesn’t give the TBW specs for their SSD’s so it’s hard to say the life expectancy. For people like me if you are pulling multiple steams of high resolution video, fx, overlays and running the programs/os that ssd will be shared across all those tasks. But get what you need just as I got what works for me. Thanks for watching!
@@GlenReed SSD would live long enough before you decide to upgrade M1 based laptop for something much newer. I have yet to see any reports about old SSDs failing in mass before they are outdated. So unless you’re planning to hold to your M1 MacBook Pro for the next 10 years, I would not worry too much about SSD aging.
my 2015 15" with 256gb nvme ssd just experienced a drive failure because I was always swapping to disk. In 4 years I ended up with 186 terabytes written. that's 127gigabytes a day! don't rely on your ssd to act as ram unless you're okay with your new boot drive being external or buying a new laptop.
@@assortedmountainlife 2015 laptop is 7 years old by now and uses 7 years old SSD technology. It’s outdated as fuck. But yeah, let’s all be afraid of using ssd swap disks.

Cheers, I had the same thoughts too for video editing. Unified memory reminds me of the old Intel HD series where the CPU and iGPU shared the exact same memory, the system would lock up if all RAM is consumed.
I am now just undecided whether 24 or 32GPU cores is sufficient for video editing.
I intend to keep my MacBook pro for 5-10 years, what do you think?
If you plan to keep the machine for a long time I would personally go with as much as you can justify spending. I personally went with max everything except the ssd which I went with 1TB since because I usually edit off fast Nvme drives anyways. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

Today's 16gb macbook is yesterdays 8gb macbook. For my music needs I'll capture on 16gb intel mac mini and use my windows gaming (32gb cpu + 12gb gpu) rig to process. At least I can replace or upgrade over the next several years.
Haven't seen anyone say this -- I buy laptops to keep them for 8 or 9 years. I'm sill using a late 2013 Macbook Pro 13". I will keep my iPhone 12 Mini for at least 4 or 5 years. Tech turnover drives me nuts.
Macbooks aren't upgradeable. I just bought an M1 Max 24 core with 64GB so that it will still be relevant in six or seven years and so that I won't have software update issues. I'll never max it out during daily use. But I'm pretty confident I'll be able to say that for a long time.

The only thing you can regret in 2-3 years is that you bought the model with not enough memory; Apple no longer allows for memory upgrades; RAM is not possible to compensate for with external drives. In essence Apple forces the consumer that buys the lower memory configuration to become garbage generators.

When you say you had 64GB on "your preview" Macbook, do you mean Intel based? Because from what my research told me they work completly different, and 16GB on M1 is (kind of) equal to 32GB on Intel... hence 32GB would be plenty even for your workflow right?
At there heart these new SOCs are still have the M1 processor at it’s heart. Therefore the cpu performance will be pretty the same as the vanilla M1. As always spend on memory and not SSD size to minimise swapping.

The CPU performance is almost twice that of the regular M1. Single core performance is about the same but the M1 pro and Max have 8 performance cores vs only 4 on the M1.
Don't discount the SSD size too much. An important factor, especially for pros is the wear rate of the storage. A conservative estimate for DWPD (drive writes per day) is 0.3 x SSD capacity, so for example a 1 TB drive can safely write 300Gb/day. It's a good rule of thumb to ensure you select the correct size for your use. Obviously you can mitigate this by using external drives. Handy to know though!

The whole world may be interested, who in the world is working with 8k ProRes RAW! For what, why and where do,these videos go? Usually 4k with H.265 may be enough for any scenario. It may be an option for cinema projectors, being feeded with 8k, but where in the world we may see a movie wirh8k?
Many times filmmaker’s acquire footage in these higher resolutions in order to reframe, crop or zoom in post without losing quality. Right now I shoot in 6K ProRes Raw and BlackMagic BRAW for this very reason. Soon I will purchase the Ursa Mini Pro 12k to shoot in 8k and render in 6k. Hope this helps clarify a bit. I won’t mainly on Davinci Resolve. If you use a lot of titles, OFX effects or work in fusion a lot, the extra ram would be better. However if you don’t the extra processing power of the M2 will help during the editing and rendering process. Hope this helps! Happy editing 😉

I think 16gb is enough for me/development, I am interested in the 14” model, as far as I know the stores don’t sell the 32gb model, so I have to choose between the base model 16gb and the 64gb specd out 14” model, which is 4100, it’s a huge price difference if I’m not mistaken, and I think by saving 2000 I can upgrade sooner to a newer model, let’s say m3 or whatever. I don’t have access to an Apple store but a friend of a friend will buy one for me, I’m not sure what models are available or the prices.
16GB enough in 2021? I'm assuming you don't have more than 30 chrome tabs open, slack, Spotify, multiple docker containers, postman, vscode, pgadmin open all at the same time. 32GB is borderline not enough, especially if you are simulating an iPhone with while developing in something like react native. I think 64GB is the future proof option every dev needs.

I'm gonna have to keep on closing tabs and apps when performance degrades, even if I find a 32/64 GB model, the price is way higher, I can't pick and choose components like you buy from apple store, when they sell a 64 GB model it will have 2 TB / 32 GPU cores, price is double, I can save 2000 bucks and buy an m2 / m3 when I feel like this one is slow. So far this is my thinking, I'm right now trying to find someone that bring it to me from another country, without asking too much to do it.
I’m currently using the 14 inch m1 pro with a 16gb it till this day it hasn’t froze or given me any problems while using it.

Hi Glen. This video has opened my eyes. You are very right. My idea is to buy the same 64 unit with the same processor how do you explain in your video. I want to connect it to the 27” Apple Display for a desktop version and eventually be able to take it anywhere. My previous MacBook Pro is 2017 15” and it did not perform well at work. Regarding the battery life, can I ask you how it performs? My other question is if you have finally bought it and are you satisfied? That’s awesome! This MacBook works really well!! I use it as a desktop machine with two monitors connected to it along with the built in screen and it handles the load no problem. The battery life is the best out of any laptop I’ve used. I can work on very intensive tasks even play a few games and it lasts a long time. If you’ve been using a 2017 model this will be like switching from a Toyota Corolla to a Ferrari. Thanks for watching!
SSD failure is greatly over represented in this video. Swapping on an m1 is blazing fast, and not going to unnecessarily wear out the machine pre-maturely. SSD failure from the kind of wear we're talking about is an old world concept; when ssd controllers were less reliable. SSD controllers are generally what failed on first gen ssds. not the storage blocks. You're not going to wear out your ssd. Swapping on nvme gen 4 is literally 5g/s; that's fast enough to not notice.
I'd agree with that - tech has moved on alot.
