    At the start of 2020 Epiphone unveiled the Epiphone Les Paul Classic Worn Purple. This was available in a few colours but the one in this video is the Les Paul Classic Worn Purple model.
    In this review I talk about the guitar build quality, how it was set up from the factory, what I had to do to make it playable and I run through some tones.
    The Epiphone Les Paul is a guitar that I've had a long love affair with. I got my first Epiphone Les Paul in 2003 and I've always had a soft spot for them. The Epiphone Les Paul Classic Worn Purple is a stunning looking guitar and it sounds great too!

      I wanted this just on it being a purple burst, but decided on the SG Classic P90 in worn green. I had the same stock setup experience myself, and it was initially somewhat of a bummer, as I really had high hopes for Epiphone after the 2020 re-branding. I mean, my Rondo Agile Les Paul was actually set up just as well, if not better. I mean seriously, even my two $199 Squier Affinity Jazzmasters faired better off the QC factory line my miles.
      The vintage style "deluxe" tuning machines on my SG are absolutely going in the bin in favor of some Kluson Revolution 19:1 tuners ASAP. Overall? If you know how to do basic setups on a guitar it's a pretty good deal, but unleveled frets out of the box is honestly unacceptable IMO. Even at this price point.
      I'm still getting one. LMAO!
      I hope Epiphone is listening, but given their parent brand? I highly doubt it.
      Excellent demo/review mate. You have just one over a newbie subscriber.
      Cheers!

    I bought a 2020 Epiphone Les Paul worn purple, and it is just a beautiful playing guitar right outta the box.
    I didn't have any problems with the guitar.

      Hey David,
      That's awesome to hear. I am hearing mixed reviews about the QC on this run. A few people have reached out and told me the same thing as you, that their new guitars were spot on out of the box. A few others have told me they had the same issues as me (Too much tension in the truss rod, intonation out, questionable fretwork etc...).
      It seems there's something of a QC lapse in a lot of companies at the moment, which is a shame. I love Epiphone and I was gutted that this didn't meet my expectations out of the box. Every other Epi I've ever owned has been perfect.

    I bought my Violet Purple Burst last week and I've been lovin' on it ever since! I love Epiphone and Schecter guitars! They are my two favorite guitar companies! Aw hell, I love most guitar brands, even Harley Benton!

    • @LeighFugeGuitar
      @LeighFugeGuitar  4 года назад

      Awesome man, congrats on the new guitar purchase! It's always such a good feeling getting a new guitar. I don't even think I'd get bored of that feeling and that excitement. I'm quite curious about the Nick Johnson signature Schecter, it's a Strat type. Shecters play great. For the most part they're a little too metal for my needs but they're awesome guitars. Real work horses.
      Harley Benton are the hidden gem I think. I tried one of their PRS style guitars a few months back and it blew me away. I couldn't believe it was priced as low as it was!

    Just got one today, I have seen other reviews with similar experience to yours out of the box, but I have to say mine is mint, frets fine, fret ends fine, lovely low action - and man is the thing stunning! And much lighter than I expected.

    • @LeighFugeGuitar

      Hey!
      Welcome to my channel, thanks for checking the video out.
      That's awesome, I'm really pleased to hear you got a good one. I've spoken to a few people about this and I've heard mixed results across the board. A few people got ones similar to me, with a few QC issues.. and others got versions that were perfect out the box.
      My guess is that perhaps a bad run of "Friday afternoon" guitars left the factory. The issues are nothing major, but they are annoying issues that shouldn't exist on a guitar at this price.
      Poor setup, one fret is way too high, binding has some sharp edges...
      I agree with you on it being light! I don't know if I like that or not... my other LP's are heavy so it's a bit strange playing one so light. It's a great sounding guitar though.

It was perfect right out of the box. Epiphone's quality control has come a long way in three years. I put a duesenberg les trim on. A strat guys have to have our wammys. Hey man,
      Yeah I had to mention it because it was a big blocker in me enjoying the guitar. In fact, I actually hardly pick this guitar up because my first impressions were so soured by this I didn't really bond with the guitar. It's a shame because the colour is absolutely amazing. One day I'll get around to giving it a proper fix up and then maybe I'll love it haha.

  • @chuckpotockimusic2288
    @chuckpotockimusic2288 Год назад +1

    Thank you for posting your demo! I'm very interested in purchasing this guitar, because yes, that top colour is stunning! Although, I'm a bit fussy myself, so I think I would be using a tiny glob of rubbing compound and a buffer pad in order to shine it up just a little bit. I'm not completely enamoured with that satiny, matted finish.
    From an overall playing and tone standpoint, I'm also not a big fan of push/pull pots; I've tried two other new Epiphone guitars that had the Pro pickups with coil split/tap, and the pots were already a bit scratchy and noisy. Epi states that they use CTS pots in this guitar, but in researching it, they only installed CTS tone pots; the volume pots are standard Chinese factory pots. I just wonder if I'll end up having to replace them all with better CTS vintage or audio taper pots.
    I have a 2020 SG Standard with those same Alnico 5 Pro pickups, thankfully without the push/pulls, and they sound awesome, but the factory setup on mine like with yours was atrocious...very high action, and the bridge pickup especially was just barely 3mm off the strings, and even with moderate overdrive or gain, the sustain was fantastic, but it also howled with feedback! LOL

  • @JamesWalshBristolKids
    @JamesWalshBristolKids 4 года назад +3

    The little imperfections you describe don't exist in my Epiphone Goldtop (2009) or my Godin Summit CT Guitar - both were setup in Guitar Center in Northern Florida. Every guitar needs quality control b4 playing... The Purple Epi with the Coil splits sounds good.

    • @LeighFugeGuitar
      @LeighFugeGuitar  4 года назад +1

      Hey man,
      I agree 100%. I have some older Epiphones that are just amazing instruments. One of my personal favourites that appears in a few videos is a 2003 Epiphone that I've had since 2003! It's been all over the country with me on so many tours and it's my most sentimental guitar. It plays and sounds fantastic.
      The modern Epi stuff doesn't seem to live up to the QC standards. Though, that said, I have heard from a few people that this particular line (The faded line for 2020) were all a bit questionable. Apparently all the other 2020 Epi models are great.

    I saw one of these in a local music store before the pandemic and the finish had started cracking in places where the grain had not been sealed and filled, it was brand new, I spoke to someone in the store about it hoping I could get a major discount on the guitar and he started bullshiting me saying it was intentional to start off the relieving process, but none of the other models had this floor in the finish

    • @LeighFugeGuitar
      @LeighFugeGuitar  4 года назад +2

      Hey Andrew,
      That's really interesting. I don't imagine that's true as you said. What I did notice about the finish, which isn't that apparent in the video, is that the finish is almost "open pore" and there are actually dips in the wood which do almost look like cracks. I think this open pore sort of wood top can vary from guitar to guitar so perhaps they had one in store that was particularly noticeable. This one I have is more noticeable around one or two of the edges. It's somewhat strange admittedly. I do think it will relic easier than other guitars but I don't think Epiphone designed it that way.
      I haven't actually been able to get to a store to see any in person other than the one I have here so I will definitely do that once lockdown is over. It would be interesting to see if this is more of a "design" thing or if a few just slipped through the net that weren't great.
      I found the setup from the factory on this model was particularly bad. The neck was overly straight, the action was all over the place, the intonation was WAY out and the tuning pegs were really loose. I had to spend a bit of time with it to get it playing good. One of the frets (the 21st) is too high on the E B and G strings so if you fret the 20th fret on those strings, it just totally dies. I set my action quite high as standard because I like the feel of it a little higher, and it's still dead. That's a very poor thing to miss I think!
      It's a shame really because I actually really like Epiphones. I own a bunch of Epiphone guitars that are older (Mostly late 90s/early 2000s) and they're such good guitars. But this 2020 one certainly isn't made to the same standards. I hope it's just a blip in the batch and not a reflection on the company as a whole in 2020!

      Thanks for the comment! Great to see you here. Thanks for checking the video out!
      Since I posted this, a few people have reached out to me on different platforms and reported similar things. I spoke to one or two people that said their Classic Faded models were perfect, but I've also spoke to a few others who have said they had similar issues.
      From what I can see, all the other 2020 Epiphone models were great. The Classic Faded line seemed to end up with a lower overall quality output, no idea why though.
      Mine is great now that it's had a setup - minus a few small problems like rough binding and one high fret. I think the Tommy Thayer LP will be great. That's a slightly higher end model again so you should have no problems with that! Let me know how it plays out of the box! They look so cool.

    Great video. I got a gold top 2020 Traditional Pro IV. Practically identical to this except it has CTS pots. I got it at Guitar Center off the rack. My frets were all perfect but it did have some issues. Action and pickups were really high, Intonation was terrible, and the nut wasn't cut correctly so the G and B string bound horribly. All that said I figured I'd try to do it all myself and it has worked out beautifully. Action is set very low with minimal buzz, sounds great, and I've been trying my hand at cutting the nut. I've gotten the G and B strings to only slightly bind every once and a while. I plan on keep coming back to it until it's fixed.
    Overall, I really enjoy the guitar. It's my first les paul and definitely has that sound. The only thing I might change in the future is to get covered pickups. Not as much a fan of the zebra stripes. Still, that's purely cosmetic and it works great as is.

      Hey Caleb,
      Thanks for checking out the video and thanks for the comment! That's awesome, I love the Goldtop models! I've always loved a Goldtop. The pickups on this were super high when I got them too. I think Epiphone may not spend too much time on the QC stage these days, which is fine if you want a great guitar that just needs a little work.
      I don't think mine had any issues at the nut... but now that you've said it I'm going to have a look and check!
      I think the same with this Purple one, it's a great guitar and I've had it for about a year now and it's still going strong, but I'm yet to sort out the high fret. The coilsplits sound great. The pickups in general sound pretty good. I have heard better pickups on some of my older Epiphones, but that's not at all to say these ones sound bad, they just sound slightly different. All in all, it's a great guitar and with a few little tweaks (when I finally get around to doing them) it'll be killer!
      I hope your Goldtop turns out perfect too!

    I had a 2020 Epiphone Classic Worn Cherry Burst for about three years until I had to sell it for untying the knot. I’ve had about 3 acoustic guitars before and this was my first electric guitar and I was blown away with it. It does go out of tune periodically but other than that, it’s an all around decent guitar. Love the play modes you can toy with with the toggle switch which super fun. Epiphone is super versatile as you can hear here, you can virtually do anything with the styles of music. Cheers

      I haven't played the Classic with the CTS pots and Probuckers. CTS pots are always a great upgrade for a guitar, so based on the spec I would say it would certainly add something. I haven't played the Probuckers, but pickups just come down to taste. I believe the Probuckers are a little more modern sounding than the Alnico Classics.

      I have a LP Classic with the CTS pots and a LP Classic Worn without the CTS pots. No difference. None. Maybe 10 years from now when they wear out but for now you can't tell a shit bit of difference.

    Maybe I was lucky with my classic worn, because it was perfect right out of the box. The bridge pickup wasn’t really my thing, but nothing that a BKP nailbomb couldn’t solve! Now it’s not right on par with my Gibsons, but very very close!

      I have heard a few people who ended up with killer guitars out of the box from this run, but I also heard of a lot of bad ones too. I think I just got one that wasn't perfect. It's not a bad guitar... but it needed some attention.

      Hey,
      Thanks for your comment. Glad you love it! That's awesome to hear.
      Interesting comment on the pickups. I actually found them to be the opposite. I found them to be very low output, very vintage voiced. Which is cool, because I prefer that.
      I wonder if they maybe used slightly different spec pickups in different lines of this guitar? Or, I ended up with one with pickups that aren't hot, maybe they should be hotter?! haha

    Hey, I’m looking to buy my first guitar I’m into metal, do you recommend this guitar for a beginner? torn between esp ltd ec-256fm and epiphone les paul classic worn any advice?🙏🏼

    • @LeighFugeGuitar
      @LeighFugeGuitar  4 года назад +1

      Hey Samar,
      Thanks for the comment. This particular guitar would be good for classic metal (80s stuff like Iron Maiden). The pickups are more classic sounding rather than modern metal.
      If you want heavier, then the LTD might be a better option, but if you prefer the styling of the Epiphone you could always look to invest an additional bit of money and get a set of pickups that would suit metal playing better.
      I think you could probably go pretty heavy on these pickups, they can handle a lot, but it depends how metal you want to take it!

    • @LeighFugeGuitar
      @LeighFugeGuitar  3 года назад

      It's a totally matte finish so fingerprints don't really show up too much on it. It stays pretty clean for the most part. The finish is so thin I think it would wear off pretty easy with regular use.

      Thanks for the comment, welcome to the channel! The colour is amazing. It’s one of the most nicest colours I’ve seen in while. The burst looks amazing in person
      The QC is a little questionable, as I said with a few of the issues in this video. Now that it’s setup, it plays and sounds great, but out the box it’s not the best.
      However, I’ve heard that a lot of them are great out of the box. I’d recommend trying one in a store if you have the opportunity

    How does this one compare to a Electromatic Duo Jet?

    • @LeighFugeGuitar
      @LeighFugeGuitar  3 года назад +1

      Hey Misty,
      Great question. I own a Duo Jet and for me, the Duo Jet wins. It costs a little more, but it's a more versatile guitar. I also prefer the pickups on the Duo Jet, they're super low output humbuckers but they have more of a Telecaster vibe than a full humbucker style sound.
      I love Les Pauls too, but I do find myself drawn more to low output sounds these days.
      Also, on the subject of "out of the box quality" the Gretsch wins hands down. This particular Les Paul had a few issues that needed to be fixed but my Gretsch was perfect when I got it.

    for the price they want for todays epiphones more QC is warranted- but made in china so what can we really expect

    • @LeighFugeGuitar
      @LeighFugeGuitar  Год назад

      The price has definitely gone up and the QC down. I have a few Epis from the late 90s and early 2000s and they are light years ahead in terms of playability, quality and sound but they were also significantly lower cost at the time. Chinese made guitars are pretty good these days, there isn't so much of an issue with that, I just it's just some QC oversights. I have played plenty of Chinese guitar's that are fantastic quality.

  • @ranchmanager9126
    @ranchmanager9126 3 года назад +1

    I believe the funky setup and a few minor cosmetic issues are strategic. I know Epiphone is producing a guitar that FOR THE PRICE is a WAY better value in guitars than Gibson. Yes I know Ephiphone is owned by Gibby but the Epiphone division is rather autonomous in the whole corporate scheme of things. I have heard from an "inside source" that because Epiphone is one of Gibson's few brands that is actually making money for the company they leave well enough alone and Algon Go and Richard Akers are far more in tune with us guitar players than the Gibson top brass. Were Epiphone to produce a perfect guitar out of the box, Gibson couldn't actually compete with it's own "Budget" brand... The Gibson brand quality control issues are far and wide and we're not just talking cosmetic flaws with Gibson guitars. The Epiphone's especially since the 2020 overhaul are superb.
    I own 3. I have sold my 2 Gibson's(one with a crack at the set neck) and have no reason to go looking to replace them. I already have. With a Epiphone 2020 SG Classic Worn and Epiphone Les Paul Classic.

    • @LeighFugeGuitar
      @LeighFugeGuitar  3 года назад

      Yeah, I have no doubt about that, I agree fully. I know loads of people who have other 2020 models and they've gotten great guitars. Not to say this guitar isn't great, but, there were some issues with it.
      The older Korean Epiphones are also unreal for the money. My favourite, and most sentimental guitar is a 2003 Epiphone LP which is Blue. It was my first good guitar and I've owned it nearly 20 years. It's been gigged hundreds of time, done loads of tours and studio sessions, albums, EPs, videos and it's still such a fantastic guitar. It louder and brighter than any other Epi LP I've played and I've personally never played a Les Paul (Especially a Gibson!) that I've liked as much as it. The only thing I've ever changed is the frets too because I wore them out from playing it so much.
      This is actually the first Epiphone I've gotten that I was disappointed with. I own a bunch of Epiphones which I love so this guitar was disappointing, but I know others who had great guitars from the 2020 run.
      Epiphone can make some incredible stuff. It would be great to see them just produce top quality stuff all the time, and I think with the way the market is shifting, we may just see that happen. Now that everyone knows more about how guitars are made and what can be done on a budget, I think we all have much higher expectations. These days you should get a great guitar for £500, because we know it can be done, and companies are doing it.

  • @Broccoli_Highkicks

    From what I've heard, the QC on Epiphone's new line is horrendous, the main thing being bad fret jobs across the board (no pun intended). I get that you might need to do a set up on a new guitar, but a guitar needing a fret level out of the box is just unforgiveable, Epiphone should be ashamed of themselves for allowing that kind of shoddy workmanship out the door. Hopefully this was because of the rush to hit the streets and will have been fixed for later runs. You might expect that kind of nonsense from a no name supermarket guitar, not from an established brand. Shame, because this particular finish is gorgeous (although I could probably do without the open pore look).

    • @LeighFugeGuitar
      @LeighFugeGuitar  3 года назад +1

      Hey!
      Yeah I've heard the exact thing. I know people who have bought other 2020 Epiphones from other lines and they've all said they are great. However, for the faded line, I've heard a few QC issues. This one in particular has a fret thats slightly too high and frets out on the E string. It's also got sharp binding in places, the factory setup was one of the worst I've seen, the tuning pegs were loose, the pickups were way too high... not a good first impression.
      Once it had a setup and a fresh set of strings, it was good... not excellent, but good. Luckily I bought this off someone on Facebook for a lot cheaper than retail price purely because I loved the colour.
      The finish seems well applied, I agree with the open pore statement, though as you said, it's not a dealbreaker, it's just a minor thing.
      Epiphone should be ashamed of this one, I agree. I own other Epis that are fantastic. My most sentimental guitar is an Epi LP I've owned for 20 years and I've toured it all around the place. It's done hundreds of gigs and it plays like a dream. How can they get the LP so wrong in 2020?

      My experience has been good. I have now bought 3 Epiphone 2020's - and online no less... All three were and still are perfect out of the box. Of the 3 the SG Classic needed 10's on it to solve a slight string buzz issue caused by my stringing it up with 9's.
      The LP Classic and LP Classic Worn are about as good as a guitar gets in every way. I couldn't be happier. People love to bash Epiphone based on OLD and sometimes justified QC issues. Read the reviews since 2020. Overwhelmingly Positive.
