As a Democrat, I have never *not* been patriotic. I resent the implication that I am otherwise. What I am not is performative. But I do appreciate the recent taking back of the concept of patriotism.

Agreed; Dems have been rhetorical and legislative whimps for too long, ceding ground after ground to bullies and thugs speaking in bad faith. As for patriotism-- Yeah I heard it summed up well once: D and R voters both love their country, but D voters love their country the way an adult loves something- with critical care and concern. R-voters love (subjectively/emotively) the country (or rather-- the land...) in the same way that a toddler loves their mommy-- that she is perfect and amazing and everyone she does is wonderful and everything she says is true and anyone who says otherwise is "bad, badman whhahaaaa!" and gets screamed at and a tantrum thrown.

Republicans and former republicans seem to think we’ve all been America haters because some far left people 40 years ago were.
They just didn’t pay enough attention to see that we are patriotic. Patriotic enough to admit where the country is falling short and want to improve it.
This cringe shit with giant flags on the back of your truck that are usually tattered btw, and wearing American flag themed apparel is just performative nonsense

Both great statements, I feel the same. Actually all through my youth and teens and 20s and 30s I refused to wear a flag shirt or hat, or bumper sticker ect. 2022 was the FIRST time I put an American flag sticker on my truck, with a Ukrainian flag on the other side! The day Ukraine was invaded. I understand that war soooo well and America's part in it and when we were supporting them and organizing European nations support....I felt real pride and still do! I understand America's place in the world and it feels so good that for all the crap talking ruzzia does about The US, they are intimidated or even afraid of us....even China doesn't want to make a wrong step! America is a beautiful, excellent country! Including ALL the immigrants maga/gop cry about all the time! Harris/Walz will bring back the pride to many who have lost it in the past years! 💙💪🇺🇲

I don't particularly appreciate when Republicans define Democrats as "finally" pro-America. I'm a lifelong Democrat who has always felt patriotic. That does not stop me from seeing the injustices built into our system and wanting to do something to make this a better country.

Absolutely. Pisses me off royally. Plus to be so ignorant as to paint all of us based on the extreme he became involved with. Shows a lack of perspective. Democrats have always been a big tent. I'm 6 years younger than Medved and I was anti-war (my brother served and was a disabled Vietnam Vet), and he might as well have called us all the Weather Underground. There are people today whose ideology remind me of these folk in their willingness to run the country into the ground (hold the rest of us hostage when we too want the genocide to stop) and will make matters worse for Palestinians in the process.

    • @luckyleprechaun-e7h

I agree. i have never understood why seeing those injustices automatically brands one as a radical or liberal or even someone who is remotely anti-American. wouldn't ignoring it be lying about it? and when is lying ever the better choice? isn't that a huge part of why we are in this mess? all the lies? lying is never the answer to good or better. lying doesn't make us stronger. ever. lying is anti-american in my opinion. I say this also as a lifelong democrat.

Mark and you wrongly presume that he would have somehow been among the small # of free Blacks in the south. The Republicans started to lose me when people like Rush Limbaugh attacked Obama for his middle name and the birther BS. Then Romney said it wasn't his job to worry about 47% of the population. The final straw was the decision in 2016 to nominate tRump. Kasich would have had my vote, but Clinton (reluctantly) got it instead.
I won't say I'll never vote for another Republican. I will say that, until the Republican party regains some sanity and equilibrium, I'll only vote blue.

I think several things happened in a relatively short period of time that brought me some clarity: a friendship with a very feminist woman who helped me see that feminist really wasn't a bad word; my son's realization that he is LGBTQ; I left the Baptist church; and I embraced my Democratic-Socialist tendencies.
Edit: I should probably point out that I was in my teens and early twenties in the 90's .

He doesn't care about credibility in the slightest.
Both sides of society know that he is lying about this issue as well.
But one of those sides agrees with the project and believes that lying is a valid tool to achieve it.

Listening to how Medved moved from the left to the right, I hear the thinking of many of those on each side.
Right: Life is pretty good for me, don't mess it up.
Left: We have problems we need to fix. And sometimes the fixes may discomfort the comfortable.
Follow the lead of the right and America does not get better. It gets stuck with unsolved problems.

It blows my mind and heart that people who I love in my extended family got theirs (with so much help from others though they believe it was all them) so go get yours. 1 generation removed from immigrants. Yet they fail to realize they live in a society where everyone contributes to the whole. Instead they just whine and complain about how everyone doesn’t work as hard as they do while on their fifth vacation this year and just bought their third lambo. I can’t. The only reason that they are now fiscally conservative is that they don’t want to contribute to living in a society. Socially liberal they say but would hand the country over to a failed bankrupt conman for a few extra dollars in their pocket. They claim I am voting for vibes not policy yet can’t name one policy for their orange tinted man child.
Meanwhile I am voting for the future of America. Our democracy. Our society. For lifting the tide and not a few yachts. Go figure.

We need both perspectives because both draw attention to the value of things that are true. Neither perspective needs an American version of fascism, which takes the nation's power out of the votes of the people and puts it in the hands of a criminally-immune leader. By definition we do not tolerate tyranny. We are a self-governing people.

I've always been liberal, and always been pro-America. I had a bumper sticker saying "It's My Flag, Too" and it got keyed during the GWBush admin. Our love of America is clear-eyed and insistent that all of us be included in the foundational vision for this country.
