      That's because those 'reviewers' are just influencers, nothing more. If you could design a terrible speaker but have a company name and send it out and an odd incentive here and there you get these people hyping it up.
      One guy called Steve, he even sniggers to himself as he reviews certain products, and he was a salesman for audio back in the day, literally mocking his own audience because he knows people are gullible as hell.

    Q Acoustics: "Deep bass dynamics are also claimed to be improved, with tighter, better-damped low-end response allowing more flexibility in the placement of speakers near the wall boundaries of the listening room".
    I guess it's kinda tuned that way..
    I also noticed that many reviews blaim 'bright sounding sources or gear' for the speakers to sound sibilant and edgy at times. This is a good example why measurement come in handy, before swapping out gear to mitigate some brightness.

    This looks to be a well engineered speaker, albeit not one that’s measurements will appeal to the typically well informed subscribers to this channel.
    My assumption is that this speaker is designed for small rooms hence the bass shelf to suit close wall positioning. The wide horizontal dispersion will help it sound “big” in small rooms.
    The predicted in-room response shows a very typical treble boost which I think manufacturers deliberately include through fear of losing a short showroom demo to a competitor that delivers more superficial detail.
    The poor vertical directivity could be avoided if this was a 2.5 way design but that would sacrifice midrange efficiency.
    It looks great and the brand has a great reputation. I doubt this speaker will harm that.

    Interesting. Picked a pair of these up in an open box/returns clearance sale discounted to £700 recently. Haven't noticed any siblilence at all except from one Adele CD (21) where the vocals sound wierdly processed to me. By chance I've positioned them pretty much in the sweet spot, according to Erin's review, at 18" from the rear wall. They're also accompanied by a sub, which does help..
    For me these were a massive upgrade from a pair of 80/90s Monitor Audio stand mounted monitors both as a part of a 5.1 system and for general listening, to the extent I'm relistening to a bunch of music and rewatching movies. I don't know what that says apart from a lot of this is subjective and I don't have audiophile ears.

    @ocaudiophile 7 месяцев назад

    Dear Erin, I love your reviews. They are unique, very informative and basically include all tests that cannot be done at home.
    My two cents:
    You don't want to equalize any speaker above the room transient (Schroeder's ) frequency and especially refrain from using boost filters. The peak energy time for high frequencies will shift by an IIR filter and that will degrade the sound. It will be at the right SPL level but it will sound throttled.
    Have you considered repeating the spinorama measurements after applying crossover phase correction to the speakers?

    • @ErinsAudioCorner
      @ErinsAudioCorner  7 месяцев назад +2

      I think it's OK to equalize a speaker above Fo as long as you're equalizing the *speaker* and not for the room response. That's the main difference. Below this you're free to use EQ to fix the *room*. It's no worse than what many good active designs are already doing. As long as the EQ is placed reasonably (i.e., not 5dB at a tweeter's Fs).
      I have provided before/after SPIN data for a few speakers using EQ in the past but it's not something I typically do because it takes additional time and I'm not sure I always see the need.

    • @ocaudiophile
      @ocaudiophile 7 месяцев назад

      I couldn't agree more on correcting the speaker above the transient but in my countless A/B double blind tests even after gated windows and maximum octave band smoothing, music sounds a bit throttled compared to the original if I EQ HF but your test setup is probably a lot more accurate than simple gating and the EQ requirements you find out could be more precise.
      I was talking about phase correction rather than EQ filters. These are time-inverted "allpass" filters which compensate for crossover and/or box/port phase shifts of the speaker and basically align the timing of the drivers between each other. I am sure they will make a difference in vertical axis responses. You can find out more info on how to create them (FIR filters only) in my channel if you happen to consider some day.
      Cheers!@@ErinsAudioCorner

      Agreed, but that adds filtering cost, at a critical region ... thus, quality coils and caps to avoid smearing. That adds significantly to the ultimate cost.

      Agreed
      Cheaply pulling down the top end of one of those woofers could obviate that problem ... but, at a cost of smearing hysteresis atop phase differences.
      Post change, perhaps the two woofer drivers wouldn't necessarily sum in the same manner ... all this right in the critical vocal range where our discernment is highest.

That lower end response is just crazy, enhancing clarity and I always ask myself why does this speaker sound so clear and 'sparkly', almost Focal-like. No upper bass and tipped up treble + wide dispersion = airy crystal clear sound. A response like this is just unacceptable.

    Hi Erin, apologies again for another off topic comment, as this is the only place where I can directly communicate with you, but I'd like to ask, have you ever had interest in measuring the Partybox lineup by JBL? It's very unconventional relative to what you usually measure and review, but the deep bass response is one that really catches my attention. Frankly, I do not expect FR to be that good, with all sorts of funky lobing between the tweeters and woofers due to the orientation they're all in, and the tweeters themselves being massive and therefore likely beaming and have break up modes screwing with the upper treble FR, but I'm mainly curious if FR is still half decent, and how the compression test, THD and multitone distortion look like. I actually have a pair at home, and maybe it's due to my untrained ears, but I personally find them an alright set haha. But of course, nothing beats having actual anechoic data 😉

    • @foxgaming76yt24
      @foxgaming76yt24 7 месяцев назад

      @@ErinsAudioCorner But, I do believe realistically the best performing partybox is likely going to be the Partybox 1000. It's the only model with any form of a waveguide, plus it relies on a compression driver instead of a massive tweeter, so the beaming and breakup issues present on all the large cone tweeters of the rest of the lineups won't be present. It's also a three way, so it has a single compression driver, two woofers and a larger woofer that essentially acts as a subwoofer. Disappointingly though, JBL says it only goes down to 30hz -6dB, which is pretty poor imo. But regardless, it's likely going to be the model with the cleanest directivity of the whole bunch of speakers, and with a good bit of EQing assuming FR isn't that great, could likely end up being a decent set. It's going to be an expensive tower to purchase just to review though hahaha

  • @Finite-Tuning

    Your thumbnail question: Is bigger better?
    Yes, always, right up until sonic detail becomes muddied or replaced by brute force pressure waves. Simply meaning, if you really want that presence, then you really have to move some air. Big speakers do it, little speakers just don't. It's a safe bet everyone everywhere would much prefer the sound from a pair of 8" towers over a pair of little baby satellite speakers or a sound bar. I mean it's just physically physics 😁.

    I am not interested in these, except for their context in Klippel testing.
    So, I would never expect a 2x5” speaker to ever perform well below about 250 hz, unless severely limited on achievable spl. From what I have seen on 5” driver testing, you should expect good low distortion performance between about 300 and 2500 hz…outside that range you sacrifice distortion or dispersion. (Purifi drivers might expend that range with their high displacement, low distortion performance, but generally those limits seem to apply.)
    Realistic bass performance, it seems to me, needs displacement that currently can’t be achieved except with larger drivers?

    I want to try and use an analogy to try and understand whether perfectly flat speaker measurements mean that they are the best. In soccer we have 11 players who can play in a match. You need a good balance of defence and attack. Normally that means a formation that balances defence (including the keeper), midfield, and attack. If sonic frequency response across the spectrum is the same as a balanced football team then if you go too underweight in a particular area of your formation then it could be bad. However, that doesn't necessarily make you a bad team or mean that you will lose. If Manchester City (best team in the world?) played a Sunday league pub team with 11 attackers then I'm guessing that they would still easily win. In fact, they might actually win by more than if they played with a balanced team because they're going to dominate the ball and play with more of an attacking field tilt. So if these Q Acoustics 5040 are not balanced/flat then does that make them bad? They actually still could be the best speaker in their price category if they have all of the other qualities to make up for that imbalance. For example, if you took someone out of your team and only played with 10 men but Messi was still on your team then maybe you'd still have the advantage. Measurements, data and statistics in showing flat frequency response is no doubt important (and I for one take notice of your reviews Erin) but bring the best audio performance in each part of the frequency response is also important. It's actually why so many people like balanced armature driver earphones, despite the fact that they are weak in the bass department. They shine in other areas and that makes up for their weaknesses.

    • @officialchill1706
      @officialchill1706 6 месяцев назад

      A speaker and its tonality/neutrality is not analogous to a Premier league football club pubstomping a Sunday league team
      The only similarity is if you are stuck between several "less than perfect" (i.e. non-neutral) speakers, sure you have to pick which strength and weaknesses are acceptable to you, e.g. bass extension or radiation pattern. But if you're choosing between a speaker that is neutral AND has good bass extension AND good radiation pattern etc, versus a speaker that falls short in one of these areas, I struggle to see where the confusion would lie

    • @c0mbat15
      @c0mbat15 6 месяцев назад

      @@officialchill1706 You clearly didn't understand my logic. Are you saying that a $200 neutral speaker will sound better than a $200,000 speaker that has one part of the frequency response that isn't neutral? That's what my anology was about. You cannot state that a flat response is the key factor in determining sound quality. Otherwise Messi wouldn't have been the best player in the world because he's a not good at defending or being in goal.

    It's an incomplete speaker. If you already have them, they will be fine once you place two cheap 10" subwoofers next to them to act as midbass modules. Place them away from the wall, cross them at 80Hz to lower distortion if you can but if you can't don't bother, and let the subs bleed in till approximately 160Hz to lift that dip up. The "subs" need to be cheap (say Polk PS10) because you only want them to act as midbass modules and cheap subs are good at that.

    Amazingly poor design. I had the opposite problem with my Paradigms, 4dB too much bass at 150Hz. I spaced them 1/4 wavelength at 150Hz (2ft) from the rear wall to counter the bass peak. Years later I started listening to FM radio & noticed male announcers sounded 'chesty' & realized my spacing theory was ineffective. A 3dB Twin-T electronic notch filter at 150Hz, between my pre & power amp, was a better solution.
