Pro Maine boat builder and long time viewer here :) A couple ideas; one: I recommend adding a couple coats of varnish to at least the exterior bright work this winter (and continually every year or two) even if it looks ok. Once the varnish is burned through or visibly damaged it becomes a much more intensive project. Two: the most common solution to the awkward birth shape is to add a diddle board (not really an official name, but what I usually hear it referred to, no joke) its a trapezoid shaped board that bridges the gap inbetween the 2 halves that sits on rabbets or a ledge attached to the sides of the bunk. The board is easily removable when not in use. Hope you don't mind the unsolicited suggestions! Can't wait to see how the projects turn out.
When you have actually lived on the boat for a long time you find all the things you want to improve. It’s great to see you guys take the time to make her perfect. Have fun!

For longer passages I would advise you to consider the bench in the middle of the boat as a bed! Especially with stronger winds and higher waves the middle part is the calmest of the boat as that's where the keel is! In the front and the back the boat moves way more which makes it uncomfortable to sleep
If you fill in the gap with wood by make a new platform for the bed ( more of a queen size that fits on top of the current layout) you can add hinges and still have accessibility to the storage underneath while giving you a larger bed. 🤷🏼♀️😁
One thing to do in April (or a month or two before launch) is plan one or two nights a week to do "anchor watch" or "passage watch". One go to bed early while the other is "on watch". Then switch out at planned times. Some like 2 hour watches but some like 3 or 4 hour watches. That way you guys can figure out what works best for you. We used a different system. I can get to sleep fast just about any time. Deb would do 8PM to about 1 or 2 AM. Then I would get up and cover til 8AM. It just worked for us. Having a idea of your plan before needed makes it much easier when you get on the boat. You have a great boat. Ken

A project that seems small but will make the biggest difference is changing the cabin door to a singular door instead of multiple panels. When you need to leave in a rush the pannels are the worst, especially in swells. I've been boating for 19 years and it will make a difference, you can have a magnet on the door and the fibreglass so it will stay in put even in bad weather. It's crazy how much you've learnt you even have the vocabulary down!

If no one else has mentoned it.... Nature's Head composting toilet. Lose the holding tank entirely. Claim more space. Eliminate (pun intended) through-hulls.
Many a sailor has tried that and quickly decided they wanted the regular marine toilet back because you got to carry that stuff through your boat while it’s rocking and bouncing out in the water and sooner or later you’ll probably have a really yucky mess to clean up. If their goal was just to go sailing on the weekend where they could anchor nightly it wouldn’t be so much of a deal but when you’re talking about major ocean crossings you’re going to half times when it’s just bad weather and the boat’s rocking and rolling and you got to carry the mess out. Of course it’s each to their own so it doesn’t hurt to recommend or suggest it.
An airhead can be fitted with a y valve for overboard discharge, so no mess while underway and can still be contained like a holding tank for marinas and sensitive anchorages.
I normally don’t make comments on appearances .. but I love that sweater on Lou. The blue is a great color ! The hair cut actually looks good too. Some people can’t pull the buzzed look off but I think he has the right structure and style for it. Haha I realized it rhymes . Blue for Lou
Have them put a zippered door in the shrinkwrap cover, to access inside of boat, also tie the ladder to boat , in case ladder slips off the boat side !
Another vote for a composting loo. So much nicer to use. So much less disgusting maintenance. You can use it in the boatyard too. We have 2 x Natures Head on our boat so also have 4 fewer seacocks to worry about.
I've been on a sailboat exactly 3 times (not counting boat shows), but love these videos and stories! Installing a refrigerator and a water maker seem like really good ideas to make living aboard more manageable long term, based on what I see on other channels. Also, I love a book called "By Way of the Wind" by Jim Moore. It is a blue water cruising couple's stories interspersed with practical tips based on things they've learned along the way. This book is always in my suitcase when we travel.
I am really looking forward to following your winter season and how Penelope progresses. You guys definitely made the right decision in taking the winter to improve her, I think it is going to be great to watch.
Ahhhhhh I love your videos so much! They're calm and beautiful and your love for each other is so heart warming. 20 minutes of living through your eyes is wonderful.
You really don't need to cover the boat for winter. I never cover mine. It just keeps the snow off. You'll have to give it a good scrubbing in the spring anyways and you just throw all that plastic away. (Ugly). Sailrite just made a video on making a reusable cover if you want. You DO need to winterize the boat. Pour some rv/marine antifreeze in all the drains, in the water tank, run the pump with the antifreeze through all the water lines and the raw water pump in the engine. Don't forget the outside shower if you have one. :-) also I pour some in the bulge to keep things from freezing.
When carrying the big water barrels use some line tied between the handles then run it behind your neck. (Like a yoke) put a towel for cushion and then take some weight off with your hands. That way you can carry and rest as you go. I used two inch webbing and carabiners for my yoke.
Be safe this winter. Just take your time fitting the refits on Penelope. The books you choose are very hard reads. Just take your time. And hope to see you on the water soon
You guys broke me into youtube van life, i feel like your my kids and I'm watching you live a wonderful life. You two have grown so much and i was so excited when you finally got married. What an adventure with oddy.(?) Now you have signed up for the most grandest adventure of your lives and i get to be there with you. We had fun this summer you guys did the best job ive ever seen anyone explore. You read so much and learned everything you had to learn and are still learning so im feeling safer for you. I'm glad you didn't just rush out to the sea. You are both such sponges for learning boating its very much needed. I grew up on boats in fresh water and sea but i hated it on the sea because my grandpa got us stuck out in about 30 foot waves and i thought we were goners plus all of us were throwing up off the side of the edge. I swore to never go out in the sea again. But i did but in a ferry. Makes a lot of difference between a family fishing boat and a ship. Lol Your learning a lot, storms are so important to not under estimate. They shift in the spin of a dime. So always update storm watching and you two will be so safe. I'm excited for your preparation and your launch.
Thank you so much, this was such a joy to read!! We are so happy and humbled that you like our videos so much and follow along ❤️ Thank you so much!!! And wow, that sounds like a harrowing adventure you had with your grandpa--so glad everything ended up ok!! Sending our love ❤️
LOTS of work planned! You two are so intrepid and always so organized. Honestly, it's inspiring. I loved this video and I agree with other comments: Lou's hair looks great, Dana's excitement is contagious, the winter "cottage" is fab, the video is energizing and calming all at the same time, too. A quick photographer thing: I was digging the house tour and then...ZOMG, a Pentax 6x7! What a beauty and a wonderful old artifact from film days. ~ Greg
Nice winter quarters while you work on Penelope. Some good projects that will make her more livable. Your filming is rich, beautiful, and calming...there's something about a wood fire....oh and I like the new intro
I wonder if you could build a removable “shelf” to extend all the way across the gap/hole between the two beds and sleep with your feet down by the pole or the end of the boat? That would give your upper bodies a lot more room and sleeping in one bed instead of two.
Keep the white and light in mind when furnishing the interior of your boat. Yes i know it would be a shame to paint over the woodwork....but I think it would be SO nice to make it as light and airy as possible!
It is important to know the Colregs (collision regulations), lights and bouys. A fun way I found when I studied for my Yachtmaster Theory exam (UK) was using flashcards. You will find Nautical Flashcards on Amazon. Just a few minutes here and there but daily and you'll soon get familiar. Great to test each other too. Good luck with your learning and thanks for sharing.
For weather, look into Chris Parker. He is a sailor who does weather forecasts for boaters and he is fabulous. He taught some really good courses for our rendezvous the last few years and we learned a lot!
I’ve been watching yalls channel for quite awhile now. Love love love all the journeys and chapters in your lives. Blessings upon blessings to you both that this “epic winter” is everything and more! That you get all your projects done for the boat (and your muscles Dana 😉 💪). Love to you both and Penelope! ⛵️
Welcome back Lou and Sarah good to see you guys again, guys you need to wear mask all the time and be cautious, be safe and healthy. By the way Lou your hair looks good and clean, nice place love the colors white and indigo. Again be safe
Happy New Year! Love that you are taking your time, educating yourselves, experimenting and doing the maintenance on the boat! Love, love, love sharing your fun.
Please take a look if Altered's taps and shower head are compatible with your water system's pressure and connectors: they are extreme water saving products which could help you save water on the boat
Place for new fridge is a bit tricky. It takes a lot of space just from there where you need space to hang around. I would still try to fit it to some other spot.
Hey guys! I really enjoy your videos; so nice; so well done 👌 Your boat is truly great and surly fit for ocean crossing. On top, you’ve done so good refitting everything last year and this year projects will take it to such a high standard! However, I have the feeling that you’re missing one thing just, one thing that it’s not a small job, but crucial in my opinion when you will encounter a storm. Situation is that your helm wheel is very small and in high seas you will need to steer a lot. Please consider this upgrade at the cost of cutting into the cockpit sides and re do the fibreglass on the sides. There are lots of boats having this option done so you can search the internet and just copy the solution. Usually, the small sloops with helm wheel built in the 80’s would be like that. I wish you all the best and to be fair, meeting you one day in a Marina, somewhere far far away, would make me really happy!
Great video guys. Funny story I was watching with headphones and Remy leant over my shoulder and said "I know that guy, he did a water fast living in a van and inspired me to do my fast last year." And I'm like really? Well, we are patrons of theirs so you better start watching their sailing eps! Haha.
I love that you drive a manual shift Subaru ! I own and drive a manual shift Subaru Outback and love it! Best vehicle ever! Love your channel and adventures!
I recently started watching you guys and I have to say you two have the most adorable personalities. I look forward to tagging along on your journey♥️ 🌷Pamela
Try and get an offshore passage on another boat. You will see how easy it all is really. My daughter, a commercial charter skipper, swears by her hammock. As well as sleeping below in the tropics she sleeps outside at night strung between a shroud and the back stay. Get one that can use a mosquito net for outside use though.
How cool, season two! It is extremely reassuring to see how well you two prepare for your adventures and don't just rush into it YOLO style - I think postponing the start of your circumnavigation was a good call to that end. Also really cool to see your book collection - if you don't have it already, I have heard the "Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual" by Nigel Calder is really good and shouldn't be missed on a blue water cruiser. Maybe you guys could do like a book review video once you have studied the books, I'd be really interested in your take on them! (And of course another review after a year of cruising to see which books pass the real life test...) All the best for all your endeavours!

You have so much space! The bath is going to be wonderful. Also, you have all this space to dance around in! 🌞
Do you have ability to have shore power to the boat during the winter? If so you should have a compressor type dehumidifier and/or electric heater onboard to minimize humidity and mildew.

I really appreciate the artistic style of your videos! I can tell that you guys take great effort in filming and editing them and it looks and sounds fantastic! Especially referring to the cool camera shot inside the microwave, that was awesome. 😁 Side note: I also really appreciate the effort being put into your captions. A lot of the time, they only include speech, but I like how you make sure to include sounds as well!
Ah yay for Season 2! I love keeping up with your adventures! Your happiness and curiosity for all things living creatively is infectious. Thank you for making these videos!
You should not stuff too much into the scarce space available in the salon area. I would work my way front to back: finish the holding tank issue and everything concerning the V-berth as the very first thing together with the head and plumming, then to the aft cabin: allocate roughly half of the space to a bed setup and arrange cold storage and a tiny workshop corner in the other half, so as to keep all that out of the salon area. You'll have to sacrifice some bed space to make it work but it ought to work and leave room for one crew to sleep when off watch. Point is that on long periods staying on the boat you'll want that salon to be as spacious and cozy as by any means possible. Just my opinion :) Keep up the good work - I'm looking forward to every new episode :)
I love the new intro! Great job, Lou! It's so weird to see you guys in a house. lol The cottage is so cute and calming. I love your videos and can't wait to see where your winter build adventure takes you!
love your new intro, good work Lou! the dedication you show towards your dreams is inspiring me to keep working on mine! thank you for the motivation and the beautiful vlogs
If you haven't seen Sailing Uma I have been binging their videos during quarantine and between them and y'all, it makes me wanna buy a boat! (I could never convince my fiance to buy a boat, however I almost have him sold on part-time van life :D)
I know I saw someone turn those 2 small beds into one large bed. I can't remember what channel it was on but they actually got more storage by completely removing that dead space between the beds.
I'm sure you must have a charter of the US Power Squadron near you. They hold courses in navigation, plotting, boat handling boat maintenance, and so on. And they are in-expensive.
so much fun!! i love big projects and i’m so excited to see all the improvements you guys make to Penelope! also all your food always looks so good! good luck you guys! take your time until you’re ready!
Be VERY careful about building out the bunks in the aft cabin. The stuffing box is already a HUGE reach down and is a pain to adjust as it is with the room there already is inside the keystone area. Anything in the way, anything at all, and it will be nigh impossible to reach or adjust. And adjust it you will, because if it is a tiny bit too tight it will soon heat up and wear until it is too loose. And when it is too loose it will drip-drip-drip like crazy -making your bilge pump go off all of the time to pump all this seawater that is leaking in way under the waterline inside what is basically a sinking boat. As a fellow Rasmus owner I would suggest you try adjusting the stuffing box yourself a few times to see what a PITA it can be. This is not really a job you can easily hire out since when it needs to be adjusted it often needs it right now. You guys didn't do a lot of motoring but you will, and you will be surprised what a regular job this is going to be for you. Do yourself a favor and don't make it any harder on yourselves by modifying that access area in the aft cabin.
I find this stuffing box to be the most challenging boat-yoga feat on the Rasmus. I basically have to do a headstand on ky face while using both hands below me and holding most of my weight on my face. If I tightened it too tight last time it is a real PITA. I even have the special short-handled wrenches -without which the job would be even harder.
It’s definitely nice to have some elbow room and everything you love about the house! Maybe a future idea to stay in your own townhouse or cottage in the winter and air B&B it while you’re sailing?
Yay so glad you're back, I've been catching up on previous videos and I've been thoroughly enjoying your travels. It'll be great to see how the projects on Penelope turn out.
I suggest you two look into taking an ASA 108 (Ocean Passagemaking) course. Some schools will schedule the course on their own boats (for example a trip to Bermuda or to Caribbean. Others will allow you to use your own boat with the instructor on your boat. Either way, I think it would be good for you both.
Well done! You're doing so good, It's my dream to have a boar but first I'm finishing off my first dream being #vanlife. I've followed you from the beginning of the little vinny van. Thank u for the inspiration 💕

Yes. You just need enough room to comfortably sit all the way up.
Yes...the birth in my boat (we lived aboard for a year) had a drop in section to expand our mattress. It worked well.

So glad you too are still doing videos and makes my head spin with more ideas to stay productive

Love all the work you will do!
You should bring the sofa cushin, and bed madrass back to the apartment, it can get mold during winter.
And the foot pump! Its the best! You will learn the - pusha down the footrest-hold-release trick 😉- you will save soon much water!
Nice winter quarters while you work on Penelope. Some good projects that will make her more livable. Your filming is rich, beautiful, and calming...there's something about a wood fire....oh and I like the new intro
Y'all are amazing! Thanks for taking us everywhere--even inside the microwave!!!
I love the way you two interact w/one another; you inspire me to be a better person. :)
I wonder if you could build a removable “shelf” to extend all the way across the gap/hole between the two beds and sleep with your feet down by the pole or the end of the boat? That would give your upper bodies a lot more room and sleeping in one bed instead of two.
Our Albin Vega 27 has that same solution and it's perfect!
Lou you are going to become just like Brian from SV Delos. He can turn his hand to anything that needs fixing, good for you!!
You found a nice little place to spend the winter and get the boat ready for Spring splash. Have fun on the projects.
Absolutely awesome. Love the intro to season 2 of Boat Life. So happy for you and excited to follow your creative journey 💙
Maybe you could check what Sailing Uma / Kika & Dan have done with the interior. They have some unique solutions.
Love the intro!!!!!! Yeah for season 2! Beautiful home, can't wait to see what you create this winter. Miss you
Really love your confidence in learning and doing. You are on a fast track to being super skilled......!
I absolutely loved the edits in the dishwasher, microwave and under the car, pure perfection 👌❤.
Hey guys! I really enjoy your videos; so nice; so well done 👌
Your boat is truly great and surly fit for ocean crossing.
I look forward to tagging along on your journey♥️
🌷Pamela
Season 2
Raise the bed & make like a loft in there! Lots of storage underneath! 💕✨
Great video....again. Thanks so much. I look forward to watching the project progress unfold.
The amount of work you’re putting into those videos is insane 🤯
Really looking forward more winter updates ❄️
Love you guys 🍒🌿🌺
these videos are so relaxing but also its so exciting when they talk about future builds and travels
Hi Lou and Dana. We've been catching up on all of your previous adventures over the festive period and we really have enjoyed your most recent adventures learning to sail. Looking forward to the next episode. PS. Great house!!
Hi Dana and Lou,
The house is beautiful! Looks like you are some place mediterranean or just reminds me of Cyprus when I lived there!
I like how you do little projects to upgrade Penelope, and be ready till May!
I know it will look beautiful in the end, when there is will there is always a way!
Sending love from Oklahoma!
Nat&Stan
Thanks so much for watching and sharing these kind words of encouragement, Nat and Stan ❤️ it is really motivating to read :)
@@WildWeRoam We are so lucky that we came across your channel! You two sum up kindness and good spirit in the world! I hope I am making sense! Please know that anything we can help with we will be happy to do so! Sending sun, smiles and warm wind from Oklahoma!
Nat
Lou Looks fantastic! I know how it feels, too. Freedom. Cut mine off 2019 summer solstice, and it was both long AND felted on the top part. Just thinking about cutting it again... not sure.
You have so much space! The bath is going to be wonderful. Also, you have all this space to dance around in! 🌞
Do you have ability to have shore power to the boat during the winter? If so you should have a compressor type dehumidifier and/or electric heater onboard to minimize humidity and mildew.
“FOOOOOOD!” 😂 I’m currently 24 weeks pregnant and Lou is me all day
OHMYGOODNESS! I love u 2 and I have always wished I had lived my -adult life .......creatively! Living in a Van Now a Boat and being a Gyspy is awesome. I will live vicariously through you! Just think it was your declutter video has brought me here! Love your goals! Note: Airstream, travel was my entire life as an Air Force kid. I was born Houston, Texas -Louisiana-Wichita,Kansas- Hondarribia, Spain 3 years MY FAV!! then back to Kansas-Dad retired Cape May County , NJ shore I Married living in same house had 2 daughters -built a Vermont Mountain House. BUT my dream was travel like my childhood! Happy I found you!
That snow drop mrs Myers soap in the boat bathroom 🤤🤤🤤 I can’t get enough of it
The intro is so so nice. Lou did a great job :)
Love to see you guys comfortable and happy.
Warms my heart ❤️.
I really appreciate the artistic style of your videos! I can tell that you guys take great effort in filming and editing them and it looks and sounds fantastic! Especially referring to the cool camera shot inside the microwave, that was awesome. 😁
Side note: I also really appreciate the effort being put into your captions. A lot of the time, they only include speech, but I like how you make sure to include sounds as well!
Ah yay for Season 2! I love keeping up with your adventures! Your happiness and curiosity for all things living creatively is infectious. Thank you for making these videos!
So happy to see your using a proper knife for the chopping.
Just my opinion :)
Keep up the good work - I'm looking forward to every new episode :)
Watch ‘Wild Hippie Sailing’ - she’s a young solo sailer who just arrived in French Polynesia.
You two are just so inspiring. Beautifully filmed content
I so admire your choice of life, so calm and inspiring to follow your dreams. So fun to follow your adventures!
I'm sure you must have a charter of the US Power Squadron near you. They hold courses in navigation, plotting, boat handling boat maintenance, and so on. And they are in-expensive.
I love this couple, they are so cute together!
This is amazing! I am in awe of your adventures. Also, your films are so soothing somehow :)
I love the energy of this video, really like we're taken on the journey
I love the new intro!! So excited for season 2! Sending You both much love and light 💖💖
so much fun!! i love big projects and i’m so excited to see all the improvements you guys make to Penelope!
also all your food always looks so good!
good luck you guys! take your time until you’re ready!
This is really helpful advice, thank you so much!!! Will take this into account ☺️
Enjoy your winter and getting Penelope into shape. 😁👍❤️
Love the intro 😍💞
It’s definitely nice to have some elbow room and everything you love about the house! Maybe a future idea to stay in your own townhouse or cottage in the winter and air B&B it while you’re sailing?
You two make me so relaxed for the duration of your videos. Thank you
Awww your new intro made me so emotional. Proud of you guys!!! X
Yet another loving, lovely and calming yet inspiring video. Thank you so much. It is so needed tight now.
Where in the world are you stationed?
